G4/G5 alternatives with replaceable battery & SD card? - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So...now that the bootloop issue has put LG on alot of people's blacklists...does anyone know of any other decent spec phones out there that offer a removable battery and SD card?

Samsung galaxy note 4??

I sport a s6 which has neither but o well its a better device other than the camera i use otg and flash drives. Wireless charging for both pma and qi natively no stickers. And faster. Once i fixed the battery drain issue. Which by the way is replaceable just requires a little work. I get better battery life most of the time than i do on my g4. And i have twrp with. root.

Yeah I used to be a Samsung Galaxy user (S2,S3,S4), so maybe I should look at the Note 4. I'll scout around the Note 4 forum to see if there are any major gotchas with it from people who have had them a while.
The S6 looks great but the replaceable battery is a must for me - I carry one all the time and use it at least once a week.

Yes u cant remove it whats the point of removing it when its more than 3500mah will last u 3 days n also supports fast charging

Hmmm...this is interesting...it compares the G4 and Note 4 cameras. The Note 4 seems to suffer from the same flash overexposure problems that my wife's Note 2 has. In fact the G4 pretty much wins all round, particularly in low light:

That's going to complicate my decision, as I had got used to the superb camera on the G4 :0(

Stick to g4 then, or consider lg v10

S6 has a better camera than g4... I dont know why people fuss about removable battery since quick charge is available buy the 64gb version for storage more than enough for ur snaps... Or better yet buy a used dslr if ur photo enthusiasts for the same price as the phone im sure u will find plenty

LG G4 vs Note 4

I can't decide which one to get... I'm mostly concerned about the battery life and camera.
Has anyone used both phones ? What is the battery life and camera like on the note 4 compared to the lg g4 and which one is less laggy?, I'm interested in the exynos version of note 4...
I only have the Snapdragon version of the Note 4. The battery performance is comparable, but I havent had the G4 long enough, nor do I have root to fully debloat the G4. I say its fairly even as of now.
Camera on the G4 spanks the Note 4. Note really worth the comparison especially in low light.
I like the Note 4 build quality better.
I agree with on every point there, the G4 is not really a huge improvement over the Note 4.
I have not really had chance to play with the camera much but hope to this weekend.
Hopefully we will get root for this device soon

Depends on your choice... I really like the note 4 due to the exceptional battery I get... Around 5.5 6hrs of sot.... But I hate the fingerprint scanner and camera is good.... With the lg g4... You get a better camera and almost same battery .... But the camera is very good... Won't replace my DSLR anytime soon.... ?
im most likely trading in my note 4 , cant stand not having root, and most likely LG G4 will be rooted; - also i dont really like the two-handed design, i'd rather get a lil smaller and i think ill be able to one-hand it.
Tough one. With the G4 you have a better camera but in saying that the Note 4s is excellent anyway. Battery life with the Note 4 is better and it has a more powerful GPU than the G4 perhaps leading to poorer framerates in games and stutter in UI on the G4. The Note 4 also has Gorilla Glass 4 Vs GG3 on the G4. If you want a top class camera then the G4 is your phone, otherwise there's really not much difference.
I am exactly in the same boat....
But as I read all around, battery life is really bad on the G4, I think I will order a Note 4 on Monday.

i was thinking on taking the note 4 but i got to this conclusions:
features:
first g4 got FM radio note 4 does not.
second the note 4 got kind of finger print sensor not really good one but he has that and the S pen which for me is useless.
Winner : note 4
Price:
in my country the note 4 is about 50$ more expansive than the G4 not the leather version its not much but the g4 is still cheaper...
Winner: g4
Build/premium feel:
the gorilla glass number does not really matter if you end up putting a good glass screen protector on it and lg claims that the slim arc design is more durable, dont know if that is true.
the premium feeling - if you are like me you are going to put your phone in a case so it does not really matter how it feels.
Winner: tie
multimedia:
as it appears to be G4 camera is better but as you said they both good, speaker almost the same preformance, screen its tricky but i am not going to say that the note 4 does not look good i just dont like the amoled color approach.
Winner: some say the headphone sound on the note4 is better so this is a: tie
interface:
if there is anything that i hate about touchwiz and i know its stupid its the appdrawer there is no simple search button (i know you can search but i just want a button on top just like HTC Sony and LG)
touchwiz is still laggy LG ux 4 is really nice some handful features in my opinion
Winner: g4
handling and operating:
after holding the g flex2 and the note 4 today i can tell you for sure that the note 4 is not a comfy phone at all (not to hold or to operate)
the holding - every phone with a curved back will be always more comfortable to hold than a flat one.
the operating - the screen 5.5 vs 5.7 not that much diffrence but... the flex got onscreen buttons while the note 4 does not... so flex is somthing like 5.2 without the buttons so.. 5.2 vs 5.7 it is a big diffrence ,so it is much easier to reach the buttons on the g4 than on the note 4 and you can hide them on any app you like on settings...
and another point that it might just be me but...(i dont know how to decribe so just ,you know listen to the story)with the note 4 your are surfing on chrome moving between pages press back go to another website press recent apps button go to check emails again rencet button back to chrome want to check the wether click home button and than ahhhhhhh its a physical button why? why do i suddenly need to add more pressure , it just ruins the user experience, and it's like that in all Samsung devices why they didnt just go with touch buttons all the way..
Winner: g4
benchmark(SD 805 VERSION):
note 4 benchmarks are slightly better in the gpu department only which is where the g4 is more efficient this is why he almost never gets hot..
but on reality the note 4 still suffers from touchwiz lags as the g4 on the reviews fly with out a problem
Winner : g4
updates:
i think you can count on LG in that department because they want to prove things.. and because the note 4 is almost half year old if not older i am not counting on fast updates.
Winner : g4
battery life :
from the battery thread i got this the g4 got better battery life than G3/S6 and avarge SOT is 4-6 hours which is pretty decent and it will last you a full day under moderate use and got better and from what i read the note 4 SOT is 6-8 (running on KK) it is more but if you really want that 2 hours more SOT you can get a future zerolemon or mugen power extended battery(with the same dimensions of the original one ) you might be getting a closer to same SOT as the note 4 .
any way in my country you are getting a free extra battery and a battery charger free with the phone so....
Winner: note4
(i do think that the g4 will get an update to polish things up)
summary:
g4:8
note4:4
so i will be going to get the g4
sorry for my bad english i hope i helped in anyway...

I just traded in my note 4 for t mobile g4. I'm not going to lie, the note is an awesome phone. I was personally just not a fan of touchwiz. It has some nice functionality and the spen is sweet but there was a lot of lag and it was just a hair to big whereas the g4 is a perfect size and fits my hands. Either way you can't go wrong, both are great phones. I think if I didn't have jump1 with T-Mobile I would have definitely stuck with the note....

The question I personally have to ask myself is as I already have the Note 4 is it worth the extra £500 for a G4. The answer i find is, no its not. The G4 just doesn't have a massive advantage over the Note 4. If it was a brand new purchase I'd have to seriously consider a G4 but there's just not enough for me to shell out another £500 for a G4 when I already have a phone which is pretty much on par.

I think youll do great with the G4, its a great phone and theres nothing much that the Note 4 can do better as long as you dont need a stylus and a root method is found for the G4 which im sure it will.

With root you can do a lot. I couldn't live without apps like Viper4Android or disable certain apps and services that cause battery drain and monitor what is causing the drain. You can also install Ad blockers, debloat your Rom and ultimately with an unlocked bootloader install new Roms and kernels. Root (and an unlocked bootloader) is a fairly vital function for most advanced Android users.

not to mention Xprivacy is crucial too!!! - love root, need root, its ashame companies are taking it away from us for "security" reasons, BS...i rooted my original Droid, still own it, and never had any "security" issues, only security issues is google cant steal my info as easily...
I have had the Note 4 since launch and is my favorite device purchased to date. Got to mess with the G4 last week and really like it. Overall, I prefer the Note 4 for three key reasons. Much better battery life (over two hours SOT, based on all reviews that compared), no nav bar and the Gear VR integration. Even without Gear VR I would prefer the Note 4, but if the Note 4 was not an option, the G4 would be my second choice since the S6 with no battery or sd option IMO is too Apple-like. The G4 would be a better option to me.
Speaking of VR, I wonder how the slight curve will impact VR set usage? Seems it could cause an ever so slight hourglass shaped distortion (maybe not enough to bug?).
hopefully my g4 gets here Wednesday and i can do a comparison against note 4 and g4

Battery life is significantly better on the Note 4, but if carrying a spare battery or not out all day, no harm no foul.
Added: Based on Anandtech and other tech reviews, the display is not as power efficient as the Note display, so not sure how the battery life can be improved much on the G4. It does not seem to be
a case of rogue apps burning in the background, but per reviews mainly to do with the display tech. It is MUCH better than the G3's, but still apparently just as power thirsty.
The display is the biggest weight for power of average usage for devices.

I'm always in the market for the latest and greatest tech and had every flagship last year. Aside from the S6 which is a no-go for me due to the no sd slot and removable battery, the Note 4 (IMO) can't really be beaten at the moment. That will probably change later this year though. The only thing that would tempt me to the G4 is the camera but with its other downsides like locked bootloader, poorer battery and subpar GPU, it's just not enough.

Unless the Note 5 has a 4K display (for Gear VR use) and still has battery and sd options, I will happily stick with the Note 4. That presumes of course a 4K display is somehow power efficient (perhaps 4K mode for Gear VR and 1440p for everything else). I think though that Samsung is going to lose marketshare to the G4 and will mainly impact the S6. Really think Samsung screwed up with the S6 and actual sales appears to support this. Key differentiaion was the battery and sd option, but Samsung KILLED it and likely their chance of market improvement.
If only the G4 had the same power efficiency as the Note 4 display, it would be about "perfect". Not rooting or tweaking is going to help the display.

yup. went from my beloved-can-not-kill S3 to a htconem8. way too freakin much money , though they are cheaper now. fast as heck but poor battery life without tweaking. (heavy user here). if had to do all over , i swear i would get another S3 from online or swappa , etc. just my opinion.
"all i can really do , is stay out of my own way and let the will of heaven be done"
Had my hands on a T999v and s3 for a while. Sold them or gave them to family. Just slapped together two broken i747m's to make one good i747m
I've been using an Alcatel Idol 2s for a bit and now I'm using a Nexus 4. Also have a Note 2 as my travelling phone.
I agree with @mrrocketdog about thinking hard about picking up a used sgs3/i747 if the need arises.
Based only on reading a review or two, for a new phone I would give serious consideration to an LG V10, once the price drops.
If not for my current phone, lg g3, I would look at the Moto X Pure Edition if you don't mind a big screen. Baseline starts at $399, fully unlocked and works on all carriers (CDMA like Verizon even), and Moto is supporting unlocking bootloaders.

I liked what I read about the Moto X Pure/Style.
Having had the GalaxyS Captivate as my first Android and still using the SGS3 I like having a removable battery and an external sdcard slot. Those specs are a large part of what attracts me to the V10.
The phone also has 4GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. The phone also has a micro-sd card slot for expansion up to 2TB of storage. Thankfully, the V10 also retains a removable battery with a capacity of 3000 mAh as well as support for Quick Charge 2.0.

The lack of removable battery on the Moto is the only thing that gave me pause. Memory is expandable so it would not be so bad. All things considered, phone options with removable batteries are getting slim. I personally hate it because while I understand it helps keep the phones slimmed down some, it also means no spare backups or simple replacement of a defective or worn out battery.

Is a G4 worth it over a Note 4?

Hello all, I apologise if this is in the wrong section but I'm buying either a G4 or note 4 today and need advice.
My G3 died a few days ago and I'm thinking about upgrading to either a Note 4 or G4. I'm sorta leaning towards a note even though its £100 more over the G4.
I like to tinker and install custom roms for my phone, will both allow me to? I've read somewhere that the Note 4 can't be rooted and touchwiz is laggy
Thanks
FTW G4 definitly if u buy g4 make sure to buy H815 Model bcz its the only one that have alot roms and recovery as i know also im a g3 user as previous

The note 4 has better look & feel but the G4 has sdcard slot and removeable battery.
If there isn't root for the n4 yet it probably will have it soon and expect much more Roms and an bigger community on the Samsung phone.
And don't take "touchwiz or phone is laggy" that serious lol
I have an i4790k and an GTX980 and I can make it lag.
ummmm........ Note 4 and G4 are not even competitors, G4 competes well with Note 5, but with Note 5, you no longer have replaceable battery or SD card slot - making the LG G4 the best phone you can get right now when you factor in camera quality and the removable battery, removable memory, screen quality, sound, etc.
Just make sure to get the H815 International version with a Euro country code as shown here, so you can unlock the bootloader, root Marshmallow, run TWRP, etc.
If there was a better phone out there at any price, I would own it!

Ye true sry had the note5 in my mind
Btw. the note4 has root
i have both device i still think My note 4 way better in software and features, and pen too, my n910f is rooted, feel faster and smoother. G4 has lag in ui and recent task screen , only thing G4 has going for is camera, still using my note 4 as my primary device over G4, G4 lying on my desk.
Get better battery life on my note 4, i can get 2 days, were my G4 get only 1 days, screen brightness doesn't compare anywhere near good as note 4

Note 4 isn't worth £100 more than the G4
The g4 sells for 399.00 and is compatable with a 2tb external sdxc. Any phone with 2tb sdxc external capability gets my vote.
I have g3 and note 4 both device. For me my g3 is better then note 4 in every expect.....only one lag not 4 use 805 chip so it's little bit fast but except this g3 is much better than note 4... i don't use g4 but i think g4 should be better choice but make sure you will buy latest one .
I came from a Note 4 to the G4 and couldn't be happier. I prefer the software of the G4 and the camera is much better. Speed and battery wise they were pretty comparable for me. And since the G4 is £100 cheaper it makes it a no brainer.
Both devices can be rooted and can install custom roms but like others have said, just make sure you get the correct model so you can unlock bootloader and root etc.
I tried the note 4 and quickly went back to my G4. Maybe it was a bad phone but the Note 4 I purchased had terrible lag. Just awful. However, if you want the functionality of the S pen and need the SD slot, the Note 4 is really the only option.

Note 7 or One Plus 3???

Soooooo, I have the new Samsung Galaxy Note 7 and with news of the recall it has me thinking... I have noticed some serious real life performance issues with simple task on my note 7. Scrolling is laggy, keyboard is too. Apps take a while to open (simple apps like text or even phone calls). I don't know if it will be fixed down the road or not.
I have seen the OnePlus 3 and it has me thinking that I should turn in the note 7 and make the switch. My biggest reservation is that there is no expandable storage.
I would like to get some XDA input on the note 7 vs the One Plus 3. Just not sure what route I should take!
Any input is very much appreciated.
Thanks!
I don't see any lag on my note 7. It's very rare

I would like to get some XDA input on the note 7 vs the One Plus 3. Just not sure what route I should take!
Any input is very much appreciated.
Thanks!

Lag could be a result from battery problems. My N7 works even better than S7edge. I will chose a replacement for note 7 with note 7 anytime

You should have added ZTE Axon 7.
for 450 EUR (vs 850 EUR for Note 7), Axon 7 is a real competitor.
don't forget that, although all 3 devices have AMOLED screens,
only Note 7 and Axon 7 are QHD;
Oneplus 3 has low FHD resolution.

Remind me, I forget, what other mobile has the S-pen? one gets what one pays for and those less expensive mobiles will serve their customers very well. What you totally fail to realise is the Note 7 is NOT a bog standard flagship mobile. Its aimed at high end users who will make use of the S-pen, 64GB internal memory and a possible 256GB expandable memory to name just a couple of the Note7's basic characteristics.
Ryland
LOL there's no comparison, one is a mid range bog standard phone and one is top quality premium computing device.

I think many chose the note 7 as a complete pack, some for the s pen, some one posted that it would be like comparing cars, there are cheap well equiped fast cars, that do tje job very very well, but then the premium ones that cost much more and have similar characteristics, but much better looks and feel, and yes, some litle things not found in cheaper ones, so, at the end, it is a matter of taste, if you can afford what you really like an desire

I m very dissapointed, with the Note 7!!! A big big flop.. and i dont care either for the exploding battery, nor the scratches! I cant believe that after 5-6 years owning a Note, they did not yet managed to eliminate the lag and shutter on the newest.. every year the same Samsung [email protected]
Im going down the OnePlus 3 lane, after trying both of them.. i shared my experience here..

I was thinking about getting the OP3 as opposed to the Note 7. But I realized that the OP3 wasn't going to offer me anything new. In fact, it would have offered me less (other than savings in money) considering I was coming off my S7 Edge.
I knew that the OP3 was going to be a temporary workhorse. Rooted, **** ton of roms, then I'd get tired of it after like month 3 then I would end up getting the newest Google device, while regretting not buying the Note 7 yet. Note 7 just has everything that can last me a legitimate year. Expandable storage, fast charging, multi window which i actually utilize every day, s-pen which i actually use many times throughout the day.
Sure, the price is up there. But this note 7 is a long term phone.
I have owned both phones. While I had the op3 since release and the note 7 for less than a month, I have to say the note 7 is auch better phone. I don't really need root, and didn't flash custom ROM on the op3. I used both android pay on the op3 and samsung pay on the note 7 daily and samsung pay is much more convenient. The op3 display isn't bad but the note 7 is noticeable better. I find battery life to be a bit better on the note 7. Both phone got me through a full day with moderate to heavy use but the not tends to have more battery at the end of the day. Dash charge was very convenient on the op3 and it did seem to charge much faster than note 7 (I don't use wireless charging). OxygenOS was a tad better than TouchWiz in terms of less manufacturer bloat, but it's not a deal breaker for me. I don't know if I will keep the note 7 after the new Pixel devices are announced but if I do I can see myself keeping the note 7 for 2 years.

Are you using the SD820 version? Because they Exynos flys with no lag or stutter.

I'm thinking about switching to the Exynos version. My carrier is letting me return the SD version because of the recall and I'm thinking might buy an unlocked Exynos version since this one lags.

I have very little or zero lag or stutter on my Exynos. It's the smoothest Touchwiz phone I've ever used.
I have the exynos model, I have no complaints, very smooth, no lags, I had note 4, and it had many shortcomings, I am real happy with my exynos note7

Yep sadly the Snapdragon.. every year the same [email protected] On my Note 4, i couldnt also believe the difference between the Exynos and the SD, but when i swapped for the Exynos, i was amazed!
Sadly getting an Exynos here in Greece, is kinda difficult @ the moment. Its sad to see Samsung repeating every year the same mistake. Bad memory management, bloated etc..
I also have the Snapdragon. Would It be possible to get it switched when I return it? I thought Exynos was only certain areas?? Never heard of it being in USA..

I originally bought the SD820 version from AT&T in the US. It was slow, lagged so badly, had terrible battery life and I ended up returning it. I replaced it with the G930FD Exynos version and it is a night and day difference!! The Exynos version is so much faster, smoother, the battery life is probably double and I love it. Food for thought.

Wow! That's good to know. So they had an option at AT&T for the Exynos version?? Or you purchased online elsewhere?

Still Worth/Safe to Buy?

So I've been looking at getting a Note tablet. I see a lot of people say the 10.1 2014 Edition is better than The Tab A 10.1. My worry though is buying a ~3-4 year old tablet. How likely am I to get a battery that still has life in it? How common is the battery seating issue? I also see aftermarket batteries are a crap shoot. Are these all correct assumptions, or could I get a good Note 2014 off Swappa and not have to worry about charging issues? Thanks
All valid concerns.
I had the same questions, then tried out a friends Tab A. It was much better than expected. The only spec significantly lower than 2014 is the screen resolution. Personally I think that's okay, as the 2014 resolution IMO was too much for the processor and slowed down the tablet. Also I don't like the dimensions and portrait default in Tab A, but that's subjective. No IR sensor.
Other than that, it has a mid range processor, but two generations newer, so evens out. It has nougat (much smoother than Lollipop and supports newer apps), and everything else pretty much the same. For normal use (browsing, video, spen notes, Office etc), I don't think you will see any difference.
Maybe try it out at a store and decide?

All my issues with this piece of hardware begin on probably physical issues on my flash memory or it doesn't work well on root, probably my unit was damaged in someway. Either way i do not recommend this tablet, it have nice specs i mean even today i'm struggling to find a worthy replacement with pen features (i think i might go with the lenovo yoga book even if i'm risking another gadget that doesn't have a huge dev support). But if you like to root, remove bloat and do a little tweaking i would rather look for a device that have a huge dev community on XDA. All we have now on this tablet here is a 5.0 official and 6.0-7.0 AOSP-cyanogen variants, i mean they are OK but they lack all the S-Pen features and the solutions aren't on par with OEM support.

-SPen
-Good quality
-Good camera

To you and anyone similar:

Looks like this tab is GOING to develop a WiFi problem in it's lifetime.
My tab just lost WiFi capability.

Thanks, I just went with the Tab A 10.1 as I found a locked one on Ebay for $150 and just bypassed the lock.
I was too worried with the battery life and problems with aftermarket batteries. Looks like it was a smart choice.

I'm in the same boat. Win10 tab is a much better dollar / performance deal than the android tablets.. but android has better tablet style apps..
Also remember folks that there are two Tab A's - one with pen and 3gb ram and the cheaper one with 2gb ram and no pen.
