I am running a Verizon HTC 10 that has been Sunshined (unlocked bootloader, TWRP, ...) and have been using Viper10 2.3.0.
I am going to be on travel, and I wanted to be able to stream from Netflix, HBO, my own personal media server, etc and enjoy my media on the hotel's TV. I still have my Verizon UDP and my rooted ROM provides me with the hotspot feature. So, technically, I could utilize that to accomplish exactly what I want to do, which I have already tested and confirmed would work. However, I am seeking alternative solutions as I do not want to be using my UDP with excessive tethering and risk getting the attention of Big V and get flagged as a "data hog" by their BS definition in violation of some tethering usage. Many UDP users got kicked off the network for this... I am looking to stream media to my phone and simply provide a travel friendly mechanism to display it to the TV.
So, naturally, I tried the Chromecast mirror option and was able to get some result, but not what I wanted. I am looking for an Ad Hoc "wireless HDMI" solution so that I can stream (over my 4G connection to my phone) any media I want and locally cast the content to the TV. That way, Verizon sees my data usage as a non-tethering type of consumption but I can still get away from viewing the media on my phone screen. All the wireless technologies I have seen (including Chromecast) utilize Wi-Fi tech. I can AD Hoc connect to the Chromecast and mirror my device, however, the quality is less than desirable for movie playback. I read up on Miracast tech, but it looks like it too utilizes WiFi. The problem is that I cannot sustain a WiFi connection to a cast device AND maintain my 4G connection. I always lose my 4G when I turn on WiFi, which in every other case I can think if would be the desired action.
So, is there a way to enable both WiFi AND mobile data so that the phone will see the mobile data connection as being internet accessible but still utilize the WiFi to support video casting? Or is my best option to look into USB-C to HDMI adapters and stick with needing to run a cable? It's 2016, I was hopeful a high quality wireless option was available that supported my use case.
Thanks!

I have a GNex running 4.1, stock. We've recently (finally) bought an HD LED TV, however not one with internet connectivity. I shall add that my brother has an XBox 360 (should prove useful).
I want to be able to stream content from my phone onto the TV. Ideally I would like the phone with me and not connected physically to the TV (hence not keen on the MHL adapter). I'm hoping for something more elegant making use of the XBox. How can I do this?
Also we do not have a router at home (currently it's me and my bro at home and we both use USB dongles for out net on our laptops, each with a data cap). Can I set up some sort of ad-hoc network at home? Will this use up my internet data?
An elaborate answer / links to an elaborate answer would really be appreciated.
Thanks,
Rohit
iMediaShare will do the job, there is also a free version.
Thanks,
But if I set up an adhoc network from my laptop (which I'm assuming will work for my purpose), and I stream from phone to XBox, will I be using the internet? I.E. Am I streaming through the internet or is a sort of local connection created?
Thanks,
Rohit
Anyone know how I can attach a Galaxy S4 mini to a Draytek 2820n router?
I'll give a bit of background that might explain why I'm trying to do what I'm doing.
I'm a heavy internet user. I need to download medical image files that are 300MB at a time on a frequent basis, as well as wanting to do usual downloading from iPlayer, Sky etc, plus app updates and all the usual keeping computers up to date. I live somewhere that I cannot get a decent ADSL connection (download speed is about 256Kb/s) never mind fibre. However, do have a good 3G (HSDPA) connection with three.co.uk. Have a Draytek 2820n router so I can use a 3G dongle via the router's USB so in essence the whole house has a fairly rapid internet connection. Only problem is that three's mobile broadband plans limit you to 15GB cap per month.
I've got a Galaxy S4 mini on monthly contract which gives unlimited (All You Can Eat) data and allows tethering.
I've been able to successfully connect wifi devices to the S4 via wifi tethering and use the internet but it's a pain having to switch wifi connections if say I want to control an XBMC server on my LAN, for instance. What would be ideal is to have the router distribute the S4's internet around. I can't just put the SIM in a mobile dongle as three have a way of blocking that (something to do with IMEI recognition) and I don't want to risk trying it.
Anyone got any ideas how I might be able to go about this. The Draytek router has various settings you can put into the 3G setup - I've attached a screenshot. I've tried various things but nothing works and I'm not sure how to access the router's debugging output. I set the S4 with USB debugging on in the developer settings. Wondering if there is something I can do that is fairly straightforward on the S4 so that I can try some generic dial string settings on the router to see if that works. I'd read something about putting the S4 into USB Kies mode but I don't seem to have that option.
My other thought was I might be able to leave the S4 in wifi tethering mode and somehow bridge this with my router but that would probably screw up my LAN DHCP assignments as I'd have to switch the router DHCP off and then I would be limited to 10 connections.
Sorry it's a bit long and complex. Any thoughts anyone?
Howdy folks, I am looking to find out if there is a way to have Wifi show as active and the primary network connection when the FireTV is actually connected via Ethernet. Many apps, specifically streaming apps, require a wifi connection and will not run without it. I prefer to run my FireTV via Ethernet due to the environment mine is in.
This type of hack or workaround would also be useful for the Ouya and any other android device that has an Ethernet port.
To sum up, I am looking for a hack or workaround that will present the Ethernet connection as Wifi to the OS or applications.
I found this document, and page 30 reference what I am looking to do:

Thoughts?
Thanks!
This would benefit our android phones as many apps won't work over carrier network to avoid data overages. I got unlimited data and get better speeds from Verizon than I do at home. If it was an app, xposed module, or some other mod, I would pay for it.

A better way would be contacting the developers of that particular app and having them fix it, so that Ethernet is treated the same way as Wi-Fi.

It is only an assumption, but I am guessing that apps such as the Xfinity TV app by Comcast are setup that way so that people can not use devices such as the FireTV and the Ouya as a replacement for renting a set top box from them. Yes, I can get around this issue by going on wifi, but why use an worst connection method when there may be another way around it? Also Androids open environment is supposed to encourage the creation of alternative ways of doing things.
Looking through other threads, there appears to be a desire for an app that spoofs wifi for people who are also only on 4G or other wireless methods. Having an app on android that could spoof a wifi connection when you are 3G or 4G wireless would be just as useful for some people.

I can see the usefulness of such an app, but it would probably require a rooted device. As far as I know, Fire TV has not been rooted yet.
It has been rooted. But the method has not been shared yet. I believe he said it wasn't ready for release yet. Something along those lines. At any rate it will be eventually

Since Fire TV is rooted how do we go about faking WiFi when wired?
Looks like it actually exists!

You need Xposed installed to run it.
Enjoy!
Is there any way for the fire TV to connect to it? My university uses it, and I was wondering if I could connect, but the access point is not showing up
Can´t look now because I´m not at home but wasn´t there a setting for a manual AP setup where you could enter the SSID by yourself?
Some organizations may keep a second network available for legacy devices like printers, XBoxes, and older machines. You can check with your university's tech support to see how you can add your device to the list of allowed access for that network.
This isn't a guarantee that this network exists for you, but most enterprise and even some residential-grade equipment have this capability.
Otherwise, you might be able to find a router or range extender that can understand and connect to WPA2-Enterprise to work around this. In a pinch, an old laptop with two wifi cards or a wifi Ethernet port should suffice.
Or you may want to scrap wifi and run an Ethernet cable to your dorm's jack or personal switch.

Thanks the responses, but neither of them works well for me. there is a secondary unsecured wifi network, but it is just too slow to use, especially for streaming videos. I sideloaded a wifi APK onto it, and the networks DO show up, but there is no way to enter the login information (you need both a username and password.) Anyone know of an app that can do that?
First off, thanks to everyone on this forum. I'm seriously enjoying my 5x thanks to the great support this community provides.
Okay, here's what I'm after: I have a wireless router connected to my PC that I use as a Plex server. The router is NOT connected to the internet - I live in a remote location, so my only internet is over cell data. The PC houses my music collection, and I use my android phone to stream music via Plex over wifi, which I then connect to bluetooth.
Now, when I'm connected to the wifi, I am still connected to mobile data, however if I open a webpage it fails to load, as it seems to be defaulting to the wifi. I have Cellular Data Always Active turned on, which I thought would solve my issue, but seems not. I'm hoping there is an app or solution that will enable me to stream from my wifi LAN while accessing mobile data. Would a chromecast audio device solve this? Ie would the chromecast connect to the wifi and stream from Plex, allowing me to turn off the phone wifi once I cast?
The nitty gritty: N5x, ElementalX kernel, Xposed framework, AOSP, SuperSU.
Thanks!
So the endgame is to play music from your computer, through speakers, with your phone?
Interesting situation. This may or may not work for you:
Just kidding, it wasn't what I thought it was.

From what I have read it's not possible to use both the cellular network and wifi at the same time.
The solution is going to involve you not using wifi on your phone or tethering.

Correct, the end game is to play music which is stored on my PC, in another part of the house, and be able to control playback from my phone, while still being able to use my phone to browse the internet, etc. I could see this same issue applying to anyone that wants to have a local offline network for any purpose, say gov institutions or what have you.
It does seem like it might not be possible - when I saw the feature to have wifi and data on in Marshmallow, I thought it would allow me to do this, but it doesn't seem to have the desired effect. I will try some other options - I think a chromecast might work (edit: looks like chromecast needs internet. RasbPi might be my best option)
Worst case I just use my old S3 as a remote for Plex and keep it only on wifi.
