With my Note 2, 3, and 4DE there is a setting to adjust the amount of time the two front key lights stay on. I usually have them set for 6 seconds, and sometimes have them set for Always on. But when I was trying out a Note 7 a few days ago in a Verizon store, the two key lights were turning off in about a second. I looked in the Settings Menu under Display (where it should be) and didn't see it listed. I hope this was just an oversight on my part and there is a way to adjust the key light time.
My S7 Edge didn't have those settings either, but I used this app without any issues.

I originally used it to keep the lights always on when I was applying a screen protector, but it still works for different durations. Should still work with the Note 7, but if you want to be sure you can try it out in a store to be 100% sure.

Wow, that is pretty stupid that Samsung took away that user setting. I didn't check to see if the Note 7 had different time values for the display (I use 2 min), but I'm surs that would still be there.
I just tried this app on my Note 4 and worked . Was able to increase the key lights from 6 sec to 10 seconds. Wish I would of know about it sooner....or a Developer include it in with their Custom ROM.

That is the general timeout setting I was referring to, and it doesn't affect screen timeout while on the phone.
That's strange it shouldn't be timing out on you then. Maybe check the settings on the application your using and see if theres a reason it might be shutting off then.
i know when i had the mt4g and even my current G2x the display would turn off while talking on the phone then re-appear anytime i held it away from my head, probaly just the sensor.

Mine does this too.. If I am on a call, the screen turns off rather quickly. I need to be able to toggle the mute during conference calls and it is a real PITA to have to hit the power button first every time.

This sounds like a really stupid solution but I have experienced the same issue before hand. What I realized was in many cases when I was going to touch the screen my hand was getting close to the sensor on top that shuts off the screen while on a call. You know like when you put it next to your face to ensure that you aren't pushing buttons. Not sure if that is it, but just speaking from personal experience.
Mine does this sometimes , it just did it on this xda app and i know it wasent 30 seconds yet. also sometimes it doesnt lock just comes right back on after i hit the button

This is what I figured out after 20 or so times hitting the power button while on the phone.
The screen automatically comes back on in 1-2 seconds when you pull the phone away from your ear. Once I realized this, I stopped fouling it up by turning the screen off and on again with the power button. It would be nice if this delay could be adjusted, but it seems to work alright as is.
There is nothing wrong worth any of your phones as far as I know it's not adjustable yet.your phone does this while making a call to prevent your face from making a three way call or accidentally hanging up on whoever your talking to. Some one can correct me if I'm wrong but that's what I've heard and read several times and my samsung captivate did the same thing.
If you pull the phone away from your face so that the sensor can pick up the change in ambient light, or what ever it is that it does your screen should come back on shortly.to be honest
I kind of wish it would react faster, but it's still pretty good.

The screen backlight idle time vs turn off.
When the screens on, why not kill the backlight (or ultra dim for amoleds) after 15 seconds and then turn off the screen after like 30 seconds or something.
Usually in Windows Mobile, these were adjustable to your liking.
Why don't androids do this? The screen just cuts out and there is only 1 timer. To save battery I use 15s but once it turns off you have to unlock the damn phone again. This makes reading long paragraphs and emails frustrating.
Why not also have the lock screen NOT lock when the screen idles off... but rather a timer like 2min... UNLESS you manually hit the power button.
I never really noticed this until I got my N7 with a case that makes the power button awkward to reach. I have its screen idle off timer set to 2min.
I think it would be great to implement this into Android. Hope everyone follows what I'm trying to describe. And if your planning on posting anything along the lines of "well get an iTurd or Windoze" then just exit and go elsewhere. This is a serious discussion of the possibilities.

My phone dims quite a bit before it shuts off the screen.
I don't know about the other things, but there is in fact the ability to have the screen not lock immediately after it turns off. Set the timer in the Security menu.
If you use any other screen lock but "slide" you can adjust the time it'll take to really "lock" the phone. There is an option in the security settings.

True... but also to dim before turning off.
My screen just shuts off after 15seconds. Same on my N7 after 2 minutes. Why isn't there a period when the backlight/screen dims before turning off.
For example:
After 10s - Dims to lowest brightness.
After 30s - Screen turns off.
After 1min - Phone locks.
P.S. I just disable my lock screen. Its refreshing to not have to swipe it all the time. Unless you have a security pin or FaceUnlock, a typical swipe is pretty pointless. With the power button on the side, I doubt well be unlocking it accidentally. The chances of turning on the phone, somehow hitting phone, and somehow navigating and selecting a contact is so slim.

After 20 seconds the screen dims and at 30 it turns off.

+1 My screen dims before shutting off as well. If I'm reading or something and I see the screen dim, I know to give it a tap so it doesn't turn off. Ever since I had my Samsung Moment...

Yep mine too while reading. As stated above when I see the screen dim I have to tap it from sleeping.
Also, with most custom ROMs (not sure about stock) in screen security or lock screen settings you can generally set 1) how long until the screen turns off 2) how long the phone will stay unlocked after the screen has gone off and 3) whether or not pressing the power button immediately locks the phone or not.

Hmmm. Well I guess since I have mine set to 15s it just shuts off. My N7 runs EOS nightlies and it doesn't dim either with a 2min setting.
It would be nice to have a dimmer timer though to control the dim/sleep differences.
What rom is that because I'm on the latest Liquid and there aren't any options like that in the security settings.

If you go to the Display settings, then Automatic backlight, you can check "use custom" which then allows you to set the screen dim level. Its default is 20, but you can set it to 1 if you really want to see it dim.

Maybe its app specific? My N7 dims too, but NOT if Google Books is open and active.
Okay, this is really starting to annoy me to hell, On the GT-n7100 only when you'd touch the button area they would light up but the t-mobile version is lighting up no matter what, if I scroll a webpage, move the phone screen to different set of icons it's driving me insane is it bugged? Or the phone like defective?
It should only light up when I tap the capacitive buttons yet any action I take it keeps lighting it up like scrolling a webpage or through the phones apps even. And both phones are set to 1.5 second duration however the T- Mobile version no matter what I touch on the screen lights keep coming on, while N7100 only when I press the capacitive button area. +
Any thoughts?

Im well aware of the light key duration thats not the issue. There are no other display settings to control the light keys that I see.
On the n7100 the capacitive buttons would not come on everysingle time I would scroll down on a webpage pull down the notification menu or touch the screen, there is no setting for to get rid of this. The behavior of the buttons is not the same.
The capacitive lights come on everytime you do anything.
Is there away to make it behave like the n7100?
I have had the phone for a week now and am reasonably happy with it but there are a few nagging annoyances that I've discovered so I was hoping that someone might have a solution.
1. The capacitive button back-light is useless as currently implemented. they light up after one has been pressed for about a second and then go dark again. Is there a way to have them be lit up any time the screen is on?
2. The screen automatic brightness for some reason in a dark room will go to minimum and then after a few minutes will increase the brightness to maybe 50%. I can turn off the auto brightness and turn it down manually but in auto mode it won't go back down to minimum for several minutes.
+1 on both. Hope it's addressed with one of the next updates
3. Maybe an android issue, but in manual brightness mode, the first 5% of the brightness slider is mega sensitive, while the rest does almost nothing...

This automatic brightness issue has been on oneplus x from day one and seems like oneplus 3 also has it. They did not fix it even after 8 months, I hope they fix it on oneplus 3. Create ticket for that so that oneplus is aware.

OTA update has since fixed the auto-brightness issue, but the backlights on the capacitive keys still only stay on for seconds. Has a mod (root/xposed/etc) been created to address this at all? I'd also love for them to remain on as long as the screen is on (and I want to remain on OOS)

Yes, you can use GravityBox Xposed module to keep button backlight on.

Most likely the effect of positioning of the LEDs rather than their intensity.
I leave mine off all the time. I know where the spot is and prefer not to have a bright led shining
Just download it on the Playstore NotifyBuddy. The app developer XanderApps made an amazing simple app to bring back a simple and beautiful notification light when the screen is off. Easy to configure, allow all the permissions, pick the apps you want it to show the light for, choose a color, and that's it. You can tinker with the settings for the duration of the blink, how long it takes to blink again, and how long it blinks for, which is a big one for me because other apps do not let it go for very long from what I've seen. The developer also said that there is screen in burn protection built-in! The only thing is AOD settings get disabled when there is a notification as well as screen-off fingerprint unlock and a double tap of the screen is needed to wake the phone up, or alternatively press the power button.
No notification light is an issue I had found with the note 10 + coming from the Note 8 and this is resolved for the most part

And from yesterday (or i have not noticed it earlier) when the display goes dark, it shows a message that no pictures are selected (however i have no picture-style aod choosen)
Only works if i press the power button on my s10+ any ideas why?

Haven't logged in in awhile but it can be used with or without edge lighting. I just tested with a 15 second delay (found in the notify buddy settings) and it works.

I like the idea of it but I don't like that it doesn't work as well there like when I plug in the charger it doesn't allow the display to turn off until I manually do it
Hmmm, I just tried on my Note10 plus. Plugged in charger, screen timed out at the 30 seconds I have it set to time out, charging led was present.

Fingerprint unlock doesn't seem to work unless you tap the screen to wake and then fingerprint unlock. Also the position seems to change slightly every time the notification blinks. I was putting it around the camera hole and the first blink is perfect around the camera but then the others are off to either side with each blink. Once these are fixed and I make sure there's no battery drain, I would probably buy the premium version.
