Questions about night mode - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

Hello, I don't have this phone but would like to understand something about the included night mode from those that do:
1. Is there a way to automate night mode so that it turns on at certain times of day or when the sun sets depending on time zone, including changing intensity as it gets darker/later?
2. When night mode is enabled, is the color filter applied to all pixels, including black ones? I'm currently using twilight in my N6P and it applies the warm filter to the entire screen, even the black pixels, which don't need it, which has the opposite effect of what's desired.
Thanks!

1. No. Maybe you can do this with Tasker though.
2. Black stays black.

Auto brightness and cyanogen rom question

Any way to fix the cyanogens rom auto dimmer for the brightness of the screen? Mine goes from dark to bright, there is no in between
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
I haven't noticed that, but I have noticed that it doesn't go as dark as when you set it manually. It's blinding at night.

Im the exact opposite I went back to skyraider because cm6 rc3 was dark as hell at night or even in a lit room. I had to go outside to get the screen to turn up
I just set the screen on medium brightness, but I miss the auto adjustment like 2.1 had. This is the only thing that is giving me issues. I see that there are some settings in cyogenmod, any way to make up the amount of points of brightness so I don't get just dark/medium/bright?

I had the same problem initially. I think I've got it fixed, though. CM6 is WAY more configurable than anything else I've played with.

Go into menu, settings, CyanogenMod settings, user interface, automatic backlight. from there, you can change the light level required to dim the screen. in the edit other levels menu, you can completely customize the levels and even add new thresholds if you want.
I just adjusted the dim level to 24 and changed the lowest light level to 35. No further problems.
Did the screen setting need a re boot? Mine didn't do anything

Screen brightness changed immediately after clicking Save & Apply for me. I found that there's a big change in the light level going from 31 to 32 (32-35 are all the same, didn't go further) and setting it at 32 seems to work well for now. My guess is that there are ranges for any given value of brightness
I couldn't get the Buttons values to change except for turning them off when set to 0. Even a value of 1 sets the buttons to full brightness, which is disappointing as it bothers me how bright they are.
Anyway, thank you jtcarnes for the quick instructions and thanks CM for the feature.
I personally just use this program called bightness profiles and set it to about 30-40% inside and then 100% outside when needed, atually saves more power this way also.

Soft Touch Button Lights

So I can't seem to figure out why the Soft Touch Button are on, or mostly not on on the One X.
In a dark room they are not usually on, run some app or open something on the phone and they seem to activate.
Anyone else getting this??
They should activate/deactivate depending on the amount of surrounding light.
Tested it myself, with a flashlight on the phone the lights went of. When I removed the flashlight and back in the dark, the lights turned on.
Yes, I got the same result as Foggy79. I just want to know if I can turn if off manually?
Probably not (maybe with a custom ROM, but I doubt that)
I wanna know how to turn them off. When watching a video in the dark.... they stay on, when they should turn off when video is being played full screen.

Use this Rom :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1625816
With PKMN Tweaks integrated in this rom, you can control soft key led back light :
* Always on
* Always off
* Turn on when the dim light, turn off when strong light

would rather not go flashing roms to get this.
And how would the tweak help? either it's always on, always off or the last option which would keep the lights on under dim conditions.
What they need to do is add a timeout. like on the Galaxy series phones. 2 seconds or 7 seconds. then it shuts off, when you touch the screen it turns on again.
It's just bad designing and/or programming.

That'sa great idea, which I can't believe I didn't think of. I have been having the opposite problem: the soft key lights always stay on. However, when I held up the phone to a bright light, they turned off. So, they are working.
Still, it takes a really bright light to achieve this; I wish I could fine tune the behavior. I tried an app that stated it would control the keys but it did not work (and my phone is not rooted).
I also see in ancola66's post that the custom ROM allows automatic dimming only in "strong light," so apparently the behavior I am seeing is normal. I wish it would take less strong light to activate dimming/off as my lights never seem to go off, as I stated.
Thanks for these informative posts.
Reading in bed with Aldiko
It mostly annoys me when I'm reading in bed with Aldiko. Aldiko is a great reading app that lets you adjust the lights the phone emits to the lowest possible, so I can read in the dark without disturbing my wife.
However, on this phone I have the keys glaring in my eyes, way brighter than the letters of my book.
I wish I could switch them off somehow.
I thought the soft lights will only turn on when phone is in dark place? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Exactly.. That sucks when lying in bed reading next to your beloved.. It should only light when touching the screen like the s3..I don't need those lights when I sit and read a book or something

There are ways to disable them. Mostly(maybe a must) if you are ROOTED.
Apps that ppl said that were able to shut them off were screenfilter or how its called. Search through the forums here.
Or you can edit the framework-res file to disable them on sense roms. If Interested I will search it from here somewhere.
Or for CM check my signature (there are 2 lines, not the one about the UV...)
They annoy me too. I recently began watching some videos in bed (streaming from desktop) because I temporarily gave away my laptop. They are very bright in the dark, I wish there was an option to turn them off permanently (yes, I know it's possible with custom ROMs, but I'm still not ready to root yet).
Also, the display is still too bright for my taste - lowest brightness should be lower. Although it's pretty good compared to other screens. In my opinion, the lowest brightness is also very important, just as max. brightness.

When going into sleep, screen dims, but then lights back up

I've had the watch since tuesday, but am having a problem with it: when going into ambient, screen visibly dims, but ends up lighting back up... Tried several brightness settings, and it does it with all, except maximum brightness (ie 5).
So basically, when going into ambient, the screen progressively dims, but then brights up and ends up settling at the ambient brightness level it should reach when brightness is set at 5.
Have tried several watch faces, and factory resetting, but it doesn't change a thing.
Anyone experiences that?
Also tried setting brightness with Autowear: only the awake brightness is affected- the ambient brightness always stays the same...
For what is worth, it's particularly obvious with the Dandy default watch face, as it's the same in awake and ambient mode (minus the seconds hand). Set this one up, set brightness at 1, get in a low lit room, and then, I for one see the ambient brightness get dimmer, then get visibly brighter and settle there... Not that obvious in a bright room, but blatant in a dark one.
Also, I realized the watch reports the Android Wear version is 1.3.0.2176821 while it's the latest 1.3.0.2284253 on the phone. Same as, the watch reports the Google Play Services version is 8.1.20 (2283517-534) while it is 8.1.15 (2250156230) on the phone. Don't know if it matters...

That, I already do. But the sun sets long before I go to bed, and lay the watch on the charger. And it's as soon as the sun sets that the watch is much too bright to me in ambient mode...

is there a WORKING app to dim screen based on time/gps?

I tried lux but even though it mentions it can dim based on gps sunset/sunrise it needs a light sensor still. I also tried XPosedMTC but was told that with newer Malaysk ROMs it just doesn't work. Anyone have anything that actually does do this fairly easy task?
Thanks
Dave

I use Tasker for that.
Just create a scene with a dark transparent background and let tasker show this scene between some hours
Thanks I'm looking for an easier, more automatic application. They have some that use GPS, there has to be one that works.
Dave
Tasker is the most automatacly APP i know
You can make everything possible with that APP Also the position and time aumatic you want.
The thing is it gets dark at different times at different times of the year. Its 5pm in winter and 9pm in summer so this would be problematic w/ a hard and fasat time.
Dave
look at the tasker plugin Locale/Tasker Twilight Plug-in
Here is the description. should do exactly what your looking to do
Have different day and night situations or have a situation for morning twilight. Or have a situation start 10 minutes before sunrise and end 20 minutest after sunrise.
This app knows when the sun rises and sets.
With Twilight situations can start and end at the following times:
- Astronomical dawn
- Nautical dawn
- Civil dawn
- Sunrise
- Sunset
- Civil dusk
- Nautical dusk
- Astronomical dusk
Or a number of minutes before or after them.
The place for where the times are calculated can either be a fixed, by the user chosen location, or the current location of the device.
Thanks much, I'm going to have to research what commands actually initiate the screen dimming/brightness level.

Blankstar, could you help me out a bit. I have the plugin installed but i'm a bit confused on the task. I selected action display | display | brightness but this is where I get lost. I did set an action to disable auto brightness as the app suggests then created another action to set brightness to 0 for sunset to sunrise (Actually not that dim). I then thiink I set another task from sunrise to sunset w/ 255 screen brightness correct? Do I need to turn auto brightness back on? The help files don't help me much here. Is there a way to gradually taper down the screen brightness over the last hour of light so the screen just doesn't go from full bright to full dark or is there no linear setting w/o setting up 20 or 30 tasks to adjust brightness over that last hour?
**Update**
I did get it working but oddly the time before/after sunset/sunrise appears to be ignored. It just runs at the time displayed for sunset/dusk/etc. Not sure why. I would set the time before a minute before the current time and wait and it just wouldn't do anything. Then sure enough at the sunset display time it worked. Anyone ever experience this? Maybe it doesn't use the same clock as the phones displayed time?
Dave
You can use Tasker (State Plugin) with the Twilight Plugin & Screen Filter (Action Plugin).
if you want to use Lux, you can define it as the following settings:
http://imgur.com/a/SWidl
Thanks I'll try your lux settings. my lux settings never worked. You have confirmed it does auto dim? Is it gradual or does it just go to a predefined dimness at a certain point in time relative to sunrise/sunset?
Thanks
Dave
Tried your settings w/o luck. I can manually enable the night setting but it won't auto set it. It is daylight here now so as a test If i set the sunset to 2pm (It is 3:19PM here) and it will not activate the night setting. If I manually enable night mode and then switch the location from my sunset time of 2pm back to GPS it then puts the bightness to full light (100%) it should but it does not enable night mode or dim the screen.
**UPDATE**
Well I guess I stand corrected. While I could not set a sunset/sunrise time manually to get it to do its thing If i set GPS sunrise/sunset it did in fact dim so who knows? It is working so I'll take it.

Same for me.... Changing time has no effect... What is KCAL or CF Lumen support?
Whats the setting for the profile? Day? Night? Auto? Intelligent?

Display color totally washed out

Updated to 8.0.0, it was fine, some apps (like Waze) got forced close quite often so I did a cache clear (in Recovery Mode). Now the display color is totally washed out, especially starting from 50% brightness. Any idea the reason could be? THanks
Oh, and I notice that if I go to Display Setting - Screen Mode - Adaptive Display - Advance options, what ever I do with the 3 channels (Red, Green, Blue), the display color doesn't change a bit
On Nougat there is a Display setting called "Screen mode". Does it still exist on 8.0, and if so, maybe it has changed due to the cache clearing?
Edit: Did not read post properly, sorry. Although, have you tried to change between the different screen modes?
