OK, I have been dealing with this since I bought my GSII and cannot find any information about it.
Firstly I want to say that I am completely stock and unrooted.
My phone does not like to keep a stable data connection. About 50% of the time, when I try to do anything that requires a data connection (facebook, browser, gmail, etc.) the 2 arrows under the 2g/3g/4g icon will stick being grey and my phone just sits there "loading". I tried a factory reset, didn't install any apps, and also got a new sim card and the issue remains. It happens everywhere so it is not just a bad network connection.
I decided to post the question here because yesterday I was playing with my brother's GSII, and his did the same thing.. So it made me think that maybe it wasn't just me. Has anyone else experienced this? Or does anyone know what might be the cause?
Edit: I set my phone to use 2g only, and the problem vanished.. So it doesn't like to connect to 3g/4g.

Try going to your mobile network connection settings, choose access point names, hit your menu button and click "restore defaults".. It may fix it, I had data issues and it did the job. Hope it works for you!

Do what the gut above me said. Also call Tmobile and tell them, they will refresh your data connection on their end. That will clear up three problems your having.
But if it's also happening to your brothers phone, it's a network error. Call Tmobile.

I restored the apn settings and had Tmobile refresh my data connection, and it still happens. I noticed today that it's not just data, I'm also unable to call or text when it happens.. Tmobile just said everything tested normal so there is nothing they can do.. And I really don't think it's the phone so I don't want to exchange for a refurbished unless I have to.

Its happened to me before. For about a week, the data connection just dropped. It would come back for a bit and later vanish. I called t-mobile and they guided me through routine steps (i.e. taking the battery out, rebooting, resetting) but nothing seemed to work. They really couldn't figure it out and later told me to replace the SIM. I can't remember if they shipped me one or had to go to the store but either way that relieved the problem. This was on an HTC HD2.
That might not be the case with you though. At one point in time all the phones under my name lost data connectivity just as you explain. This really had no solution but to wait it out.

you mentioned your brother's is doing the same thing, its probably not the phone, but rather the cell tower your connected to is fuggin up. Try going 5 miles from where you currently are and see if its still happening.

Just in case it's not a cell tower or network problem . . . My SGS2, purchased in October, had the same symptoms as the OP. After trying everything the OP did, and more, I came to the conclusion that the firmware on the phone was corrupt. I used Odin to flash the factory stock ROM & Kernel images (2.3.5 at the time). There was a definite improvement in the faltering/hesitant/fail connectivity problem at that point, but it was still very subpar. So I then also flashed, again using Odin, the baseband ("modem") image - I did it twice for good measure. The problem was finally immediately solved at that point and I had very prompt loading of webpages, etc. Still working fine months later (and even better with a custom ROM). See the thread entitled "[Q]Is there a "true" factory restore for T-Mobile Galaxy S II?" for help about the seemingly same symptoms/problem you (and your brother) are experiencing. If your underlying problem is in fact the same as mine (and the poster of the thread I cited) then it's apparently either a bad factory flash or a post-factory corruption occurrence that is causing your problem . . . the coincidence of your brother also having the same problem aside. I'm having the same issue, I didn't check this morning before I left Lakeland, but I'm near Lee and OBT and have no data on my Evo LTE. I am at least glad to see its not my ROM either.
:crying: im having the same issue. since i woke up about an hour ago ive noticed i have absolutely no data(west palm beach fl)... sprint has me on hold now
I spoke with Sprint and they said the network was down in Orlando and they are crediting my account for the down time.

Hearing stuff like this makes me wanna switch carriers.
Not sure if its just the carrier here. I've had this trouble on 2 different ROMs and the millisecond I wipe and re-flash I get data back. Some people have the same thing, others have not a clue in hell what were talking about.
Check your APN setting. Under setting- more setting- mobile network - APN.
What ROM are you on now?
If not call your carrier operator.

I don't have that option, task&ktoonsez aokp jellybean. Had problems on cm10 nightlies and this. This ROM is epic awesome but I can't not have data. I had stock ROM rooted on stock lf9 radio, never un-rooted and updated. Not a single problem for months. Put cm10 on and within the first week, no data. Re flashed, still none. Flashed all 4 radio versions, then lost phone service. Flashed aokp last Monday, good until I woke up this morning. Went to bed last night with 20mbps 4glte connection, phone never moved, woke up with no data. I can get 3g once every 2 hours or so at a bandwidth of .6kbps ( speed test certified).
Try calling your network operator. Or you can reflash stock firmware and see if problem persist.
But CM10 by default has a wrong APN setting (For me) and I just change according to the right one and it is perfect now.
But reflash stock.one and try.

Called net op, reset connection with., otherwise... no help. Also I know nothing about apn's, however there was an APN update in the last change log. When I say I know nothing about apn's, that's literal. I don't even know what the acronym stands for.

My friend is having a lot of issue with data in NJ with sprint. Maybe the they are testing LTE which is causing issues?
Data is back. titanium backup of user apps+data, backed up the built in launcher to SD, wiped, flash, gapps. Data working and phone is like I never left. Going to use all of the dev logging and track what I do day to day to see what the hold up is here.

TO ALL!!!! this is a call to action. I too, like many others are experiencing unacceptable data speeds while on 3G and in great reception while using the Galaxy S III. the speeds I should be receiving are 1.5-3 MB/s but instead I am receiving around 128Kb/s in the city and within excellent service. We all have to pay a 'Premium Data Add-On' charges just to own these phones and this is unacceptable. Please write an Email to [email protected], vice president of customer experience at sprint and let him know what you are experiencing. Maybe if enough pissed off customers write, they will finally listen!

Been running fine since I've had it and have been running some different roms.
Today I haven't been able to use mobile data, does anyone know of any problems with the network,or is it me?
I have signal, can make calls and send texts but no internet. Checked apn settings a million times and tried formatting and re-flashing my rom
The next step is reverting back to stock, but I was hoping there might be an easier solution.
Any help would be great,thanks
This may sound stupid but have u turned mobile data off? Have you run out of data from EE i dont know how it works when you hit your limit with them, my friend is on ee just checked his phone seems fine,

in about device.does it say:baseband unknown?
If yes just flash modem zip
Go to google type ee internet setup and send yourself the internet settings I had this problem im in UK and I have to do it sometimes to get internet back hope this helps

Hey guys. I noticed a lot of people, including myself, have been getting the dreaded process com.android.phone force close message upon booting up new ROMs.
This only happens when trying to connect to data. Turn it off, and the force closes stop. Well, I believe I've found a workaround using an APN file I've found floating around on the Carbon ROM thread!
Upon booting, just keep clicking the OK message to skip past the FC errors and the ROM setup process, and then disable your data as soon as you can. Connect to wifi, go to the Play store and install your favorite root browser. Download the linked APN file at the bottom of this post to your phone, and open up your root browser. Copy the APN file you downloaded, then go to system/etc, delete the stock APN file and replace it with the new one. Set permissions to rw-r-r, reboot into recovery, and do a factory data reset. Boot back into ROM and voila, you should be good!
Note that this may or may not fix your data problems, as every phone is different and some of you are on different carriers. This method has been working for me ever since I started doing it a couple of days ago, and almost every new ROM I've installed recently have given me the FC error. That is no more with this new APN, and I even get a better data connection than before. Hope this helps you all!

Sweet! Thanks. Going to give this a shot now. Was so excited for 4.4 but it COMPLETELY disabled ALL my data (wifi/3G/LTE).
Guess it's time to give KitKat another shot.

no data "loss" for me on KitKat but 4G drops out when making a call and come right back after I hang up.

Okay, I've been seeing this complaint around the forums recently, so I'll say this.
For as long as I've ever owned a smartphone, 3G/4G ALWAYS turned off for me whenever I was in a phone call, but I could still browse the internet and stuff. Maybe now things are different with this phone/these ROMs, and data is actually blocked when in a call, I don't know. It's not an issue to me, though, because I really don't use data while in a call. So hopefully this issue can get cracked down further for you guys who do.

I can confirm that no matter what ROM I've been on, when I made or received a call, my 4G/3G symbol would disappear, but if I was on 4G I could still access the internet. Not with 3G of course. I'll need to get to a 4G area and test this.

For CM10.2 it works fine. For stock it is fine it just seems to be this KitKat that is a GSM build that is being worked over a bit for CDMA. That is where the problem lies.

One stock my 4G symbol stays as well as internet. On KK I loose the symbol and no data connection. I always confirm that data is actually gone.
Not sure if you've all seen this but apparently it's going to be fixed soon.

I tried this on liquid official..I DL APN deleted old one, set permission reboot to twrp wiped data and same thing...was wiping data the wrong thing? Can someone shed some light on this I'm not a noob but one to this phone

Paste in system/etc, set permissions to rw-r-r, reboot to recovery, factory data reset, reboot. Worked for me every time.

I wonder if this has to do with our builds coming from the nexus 5, since it is a tri-band LTE device. It does not have the capability to be connected to LTE and CDMA at the same time. Are there any radio files we are grabbing from the nexus 5 that might be causing this behavior to occur?

Sorry for belated update, worked like a charm for me.!
Confirmed to work. I did NO factory data reset or even rebooting. FCs just immediately stopped after replacing file. Proof enough for me.
What's the cause of this?

This did not work for me on the AOSP 4.4 ROM either. I have tried several times and still get force closes. I am running fine on CM10.2 though.
Does this fix the issue with switching between 4G to 3G? While on the Omni rom, if I'm connected to 4G and it loses signal, it doesn't connect to 3G. Or, if I want to turn of 4G and only use 3G, it never connects.
For some reason, when I put it, the system just disregards it. It says successfully deleted and pasted too. When I delete the old one and paste the new one it says "Do you want to overwrite?" even though the old one is gone. Anybody got anything?

I have the same issue, and this is one of the only posts about it. Have you found a way to fix it? I'm at a point where I'm about to just sell this. I can't get anything done. Do you by chance have T-Mobile?
Same issue. T-Mobile here. Doesn't disturb me enough to sell the phone, haven't had the issue since going to a custom ROM. I'm sure it'll be fixed with OTA's or whatever.

Really nice to know I'm not the only one. But my god, it's getting worse as time goes on. I'm at the point where I can't even get data unless I reboot the phone 5-6 times, and only for a few seconds. I am completely out of ideas.

I have been using my m8 since the day I got it back in early April and have never experienced that issue. I am also on tmo but have the dev edition with stock rom but I live in the city so I always get a strong and good signal.
Possible solution
My M8 worked great for a month when about a week ago I've started having serious issues with the HSPA data.
After working great for a few minutes the data stopped working.
The H icon showed that traffic was sent from the phone but no traffic received by the phone.
Sometimes the data connection was restored by itself and sometimes I has to toggle the data connection off/on to have it restored.
It both cases the data connection failed again after several minutes.
All the diagnostics app showen that there was hspa connection.
After trying almost anything I could think of I found out what causes my problem:
It's the F**** NFC!!!
I've forgot that a week ago I've disabled the NFC thinking this will save battery life (though the battery life is great).
Turning the NFC on (followed by a power-down/power up cycle) solved all the data connection problem.
I've verified several times that NFC disable is indeed the cause of my problem.
Hope this helps others on this thread.
