Flash disc compactibility and suggestions for extra storage use - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey mates!
As im going to switch my LG G4 for this lovely Nexus 5x, id like to ask if this Flash Disc is compactible with this device. Im going for only 16 gigs variant, unfortunately, and im trying to get along with the stoarge space, as im watching the movies, serials on the phone quite frequently.
https://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-64GB-Traveler-DTDUO3C/dp/B010HWCFDA
Thanks for answers, or suggestions for better flash discs. Or, if they exist, storage cases! :fingers-crossed:
EDIT: sorry, wrong section, i guess i should post this to "accessories" instead. My bad.

I have the one you linked in 32gb so far it's been working fine on dp5. Haven't tried watching a movie off of it however music plays OK and transferring files back and forth are no problem.

dp5?
could you try watch some movies from it, via VLC or MX Player, for instance? Thanks a lot. :good:

Don't use either of those... Android N developer preview 5. If you already have the phone then the drive is pretty cheap. If you don't have the phone I would recommend the 32gb more storage is always better.

Google play music doesn't recognize music that I have on the USB and haven't had time to see if that can be corrected.

[Q] Internal memory of Nexus

Can ne1 tell me how much internal memory the Nexus has? I've read two conflicting stories, one stating the Nexus has 16GB and the other stating it has 32GB.
The GSM version has 16GB whereas the Verizon exclusive LTE version has 32GB.

Here's a better question... Anyone with the Nexus able to tell has how much it ACTUALLY has available to us from the get-go? We all know 16GB doesn't really mean 16GB.

Craaaaap. Basically 3GB gone... Brutal. Thanks for sharing, though!
solution: buy a USB cable and hook up your flash drives and portable hard drives to the phone. problem solved.

Yeah cause its so easy and stylish to be using a phone with a USB drive dangling from it.... but yes that does happen to be our only option for expanding memory sans cloud storage

for me the 13GB is enough for my most listened to music, around 2-3GB. a few TV shows, of which standard dev is only 350MB, HD is 1GB and the rest for apps.
then i'll plug in my 1TB hard drive if i want to watch an HD movie.
but if the 13GB is not enough then you just gotta wait for the 32GB, which will probably be only 28-29G actually.

but now you have a portable hard drive you're carrying around with your phone
that's more like "burden created", not "problem solved".
So far I'm good with the 16 (or 13gb) you get with the phone. I filled up a first gen iPod 32gb with music and random apps but noticed I really don't listen to a lot of the music I have on there, so for this phone I only put the music I really listen to often on it and synced everything else with Google Music. You can choose songs to remain cached and available offline if you really want it to stay on the phone so no worries about low connectivity. I'm never really in a position to have the time to watch multiple movies on my phone and Netflix is more than enough if I am in that position. Podcasts are the only thing that get me because I always forget to delete them. I averaged around 1-2gb of free space on my NS and I've scrapped a lot of unnecessary self inflicted bloat on this phone so I should be good until this time next year when the next nexus comes out.

I have ZERO music on my phone. I just put all my music on Google Music and have the GM app on my phone so that way I have all my music all the time. Sure it has to stream it but hay that is what a charger it for!!! I do have a few songs on there just to make ring tones with. but its less then 10 song. Just my 2 cents

it depends on how you look at it.
for me 13GB is more than enough for my daily use.
with the adapter i can use one of my 32GB flash drives, which obviously are very small, or i can use my hard drive.
now if i'm on a plane or at school, i'll have the hard drive with me and it's not an issue. It just comes down to how you use your device and what your doing. for me this is an awesome way to get around the 13GB and still be able to watch my bluray rips on the phone.

Can I get more storage space?

Hey, I have searched a bit for an answer here but can anyone actually tell me if I can get a larger SD card or more gigabytes for storage on my Samsung galaxy nexus??
Cheers

No. Only way to get more space is using a kernel which supports USB hosted storage.
It is too risky trying to change the memory chip (i imagine soldering is needed) already installed in your phone.

For any OS but Windows, that would be good, but Windows does support the MTP mode of the Galaxy Nexus.
OK. Bummer
I'll just have to deal with it then. Something to definatly look out for on my next phone phone

What I'm planning on doing is this:
I've ordered one of these: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/USB-Host-Ada...s=63&clkid=7945018501273467967#ht_1590wt_1067
Hoping it works on the G Nex, I think it should.
And then I'm getting one of these: http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?id=10425
Gonna basically have a little microUSB flash drive. I'm just gonna plug the moskeyto into my computer every now and then to sync, but I think it's the best solution for being able to carry larger files I want to use on my phone.
I'm not sure its gonna work yet. Gonna test my existing drive with the host adapter before buying the new drive, but for $2, its worth giving it a shot.

Another option if you've got a microsd card laying around from a previous phone (like I do) is to get that same OTG cable and a mini microsd reader like http://www.amazon.com/ELAGO-Mobile-Reader-World-Smallest-EL-RD-012/dp/B002K7EJDK
Now suddenly that 16GB microsd isn't as useless as it was although you'd still have to put up with the terribad transfer speed.
Speaking of which, do they publish the Moskeyto's read/write xfer speed? I mean you know, it doesn't actually matter on the device (as long as its fast enough to stream a 720p video without any issues) but it does matter when you're just trying to get some data on it from your PC .
On a related note re: storage space, I got Google Play Music working 2 nights ago and I must say that I'm impressed at how seamless it works. It's also nice having my entire active-music library, has also meant that I can trim my "offline" sync playlist even more to save more space. This space saving method, of course, does mean you gotta have a decent data plan if you wanna stream and drive.
Cheers everyone. At least I have a couple options now.

Small compact OTG micro sd card reader

ill be ordering this http://www.meenova.com/ and just thought id share it with you all, seeing as the nexus 5 doesnt have a sd card slot
whats great about it is that it can attach to a keyring, so that you can always have it with you and not forget it
i mostly use my sd card for rom flashing and backup keeping, and we all know how much space that can take up

Thanks! I think I will buy this too
I bought a Meenova USB OTG adapter/card holder and put a uSD SanDisk 64GB in it (formatted to FAT32). It works well with Nexus Media Importer https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.homeysoft.nexususb.importer I have read that Stickmount works well if you are rooted. I was able to copy files to and from the uSD card and phone or play media right off the uSD card.
What a good find!!! Thank you so much! Wish it would come in red though.
Look nice, I bought something similiar that double as a usb cable too. It is very useful on the keychain.
This looks awesome, now I just need to decide on color... Black or Orange for my black N5..... hmmmmmm
I ordered one. with 32gb i never really see the need, but i'll use it to hold movies/files when i travel instead of loading them on my nexus.
I read about this a few days ago. I'm 95% sure im going to root my phone because to my understanding I wouldn't be able to load up a microsd without it correct? Getting this if I do not would be a waste of an investment, right?
I have a Rooted Nexus 7, but never tried to load anything via OTG before
I was beginning to regret not getting a 32GB Nexus 5 but this may work. I hope it works with a Spigen Ultra Hybrid.
No root required to use Nexus media importer. See post three in this thread

There are at least two ways to use an USB OTG setup with an unrooted N5.
Use Nexus Media Importer (link in my previous post).
Use Total Commander file explorer with USB Stick Plugin https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ghisler.android.TotalCommander&hl=en and https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.hechler.tcplugins.usbstick
Nexus Media Importer is not free, but I found it much more polished and easier to use. USB Stick Plugin for Total Commander is a trial program, but just makes you download the new version every month when it expires. If you are going to root anyway, then you might as well go with Stickmount. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount&hl=en since it is free. If you are thinking about rooting, go ahead and unlock your bootloader now so all the setup you do on your phone between now and then doesn't get wiped when you do root and need to unlock your bootloader.
Thanks for that info! Very helpful.
Yea - I'm almost sure I want to root it. There's a toolkit for Mac in the other section which people have used successfully. I rooted my N7 a while back and have loaded roms and backed up with Titanium. So I'm sort of familiar - I guess it's a slight fear of something unexpected happening. but you're right, the longer I wait, the more of a PITA it's going to be to set everything back up.

Oh by the way, this is also a nice one, since it has USB on the one side and micro USB on the other! Don't know about the quality though.

im pretty sure cwm and twrp have otg options, never tried them though. its the main reason im getting one. i like to keep allot of backups and cant do that with the nexus, would run out of internal quickly.
i would love to see a case for the nexus 5 that would use OTG to add a sd card slot. so that we dont have to keep adding and removing it

Best music player app

Hello all,
I use my phone (S3) to run Pandora through my boats stereo system, I have a rather large and loud system on the boat, so I usually end up playing DJ and taking drunkin' requests at our local sandbar, so Id like to make playlists on the fly EASILY, the Ipod is not so easy with the docking method it has! Its a great time non the less....
Anyways, I usually use Pandora through the 3.5mm headphone jack as I have that option installed in my boat. I also have an Ipod on the boat, the best sounding between the 2 is the Ipod.
Question, is there any music player app for these phones that compare to the way the Ipod will sound? Is it even possible to match that? I actually think the Pandora through the 3.5mm jack sounds pretty good but I believe the Ipod is better.
I have Winamp installed, and it sounds good but if I play the same "file" song, it will sound better via Ipod.
I have a Fusion ip600 marine deck that I use, it has the Ipod dock (Inside the unit, accessible through a door) as well as the Aux which I have the 3.5mm jack hooked up to. That's all the options I have for that deck, I may in the future get the 700 series which offers a USB hookup, but for now I want to keep the 600 series I have now.
Hopefully I am explaining this good enough!
Also whats the highest class 64gig micro SD card I can put in it? Can I do the Class 10? We bought the phones in June of this year.
Thanks all.
Mx player has an eq...not how great it is..i use the stock player through my bluetooth car deck...sounds awesome..320kbs...always use the best bitrate...

Poweramp is widely considered to be the best audio player for Android. It has an EQ. But to be honest, the playlist creation is a bit clunky.
There is a free trial. What do you have to lose?
64gb class 10 would be fine, im using one myself.. With the sound mods that we have, the s3 is gonna sound way better than any iPod, believe me, try using viper 4 android like Perseus suggested. Also as far as music player, I like Google's play music and it has an easy way to add songs to playlists, you just search for a song and you can add it to a playlist in an instance.. Poweramp is also good but doesn't stream from play music's all-access so I use play music

Awesome, thanks for confirming the Class 10 part, I will get one of those. Im happy to hear that this phone would be better than the Ipod, because the system sounds great with the Ipod, and if this phone is better than thats awesome, just didnt want to degrade the sound in anyway after the amount of money I spent on the system. Thanks very much for your help. I will try your suggestions as well.
So, my conclusion is, I will buy and use the Bluetooth part of my deck and try the apps suggested and just pick the best that works for us. Thanks again guys for taking the time out to help. Much appreciated guys..

No worries, I would love to root it if I knew I wouldn't completely screw the phone up and if it will make the music sound better than whats stock in the phone! Seems like an awesome app, I was able to look around in the app just wouldn't take to the changes I made. I will look into those other ones.
I went out and bought the bluetooth module and will install it this Friday, than Sat were taking the boat out and ill try some of the music player apps I downloaded and see which one sounds best.
Question, to the one member that said the phone would sound better than an Ipod, is that with the phone rooted and that Viper app? Or can I make it sound better with my phone not being rooted?
Thanks again all and have a Happy Thanksgiving tomorrow.

Yeah it would be with the phone rooted, but you might want to give poweramp a try, it has the best equalizer I've tried without any mods and you don't need to be rooted to use it.. I also think it has a very easy way to add music to playlists, very much the same way play music does.. Happy Thanksgiving!

I actually looked for the Poweramp last night and totally forgot that I bought that app back in the day, so I have the unlocked version of it. So thats a bonus.
Let me ask, is rooting easy to you, or I should ask, if you never knew how to do it, and you are kind of tech friendly will it be easy for someone to do? Id like to learn it if its got some good things to it. Ive re formatted computers, drives etc, so Id like to think I know a little!

I think you'll be ok rooting that's kind of where I came from.. S3 is probably one of the easiest devices to root.. If you want to try it, read up on the rooting threads that we have.. Read and reread everything because its easy to miss steps and bad things can happen when you do that.. what firmware are you currently on?

4.1.2 - I hope I got that question at least correct!!
Well, I did read some of the threads,
1- Not even sure if I was reading the correct ones, so many things that I don't understand.
2 - Now I'm really not sure if I should even try it!
3 - Saw a video "How to Root the Samsung Galaxy S III" by XDAdevelopers , boy does he make it sound like a piece of cake and to you guys I am sure it is! I even went into the video description and saw the DL links, I did the easy one which was the Odin one! Easy there! Than I went to the files that I needed and got stuck! Not sure if I should try this.
4 - Anyone in the Tampa Bay FL area willing to help?? Beers or whatever on me! lol.....
Anyways, thanks again everyone for the help, I will install the Bluetooth module in our boat this Friday and putz with the apps on my stock phone for now.
Happy Holidays everyone, stay safe and enjoy!
Haha well now that you got your custom recovery, you have to flash super user to gain root.. If you still want to root go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053 and go down to where it says "CWM / TWRP / MobileODIN installable ZIP" go to that link and download the zip from there.. After that go into recovery and flash that zip, reboot and you will be rooted

Now, I have a bunch of apps that I DL from the market place, IE Handcent SMS, Tide apps, Quick Pic etc, will all my programs and everything else work when I root the phone? I know, probably some real newbie questions but I have to start somewhere!
Yes I do still want to root this phone to get the best possible sound quality I can. I spent too much money on this system on our boat to listen to something that produces crappy or not so great quality of sound. Not saying this phone is like that, because I don't think it sounds "THAT" bad at all through my car stereo using the 3.5mm jack. But if I can get better, I would really like that.
Just need to get the cahooooonies to start this! :good:
I did read that if you screw it up it will get bricked, either soft or hard bricked. And I did also see a video that reverses that, so I guess if I screw it up I can reverse it without voiding the warrenty. But I have to admit, I DON'T want to brick it because to undue that looks extremely HARD! haha

I still havent done it!
We went out on the boat today and listened to my S3 via Bluetooth with my Fusion Deck. I cannot complain using the Poweramp and stock player. Sounded damn good actually.
My next question is, I am currently looking for a SD card for my S3, I want a 64 gig, but I am noticing that the 64s are called SDXC, will one of those work? I found out that mean extreme capacity (SDXC) instead of high capacity (SDHC)
Thanks!

Could be wrong, but I think you're stuck with amazon. Personally, I'd like to delete them all since they waste space. I only just subscribed to prime but believe subscribers can use the photos they have in the cloud. So I suppose you could then just import the photos you want & use those.
Btw--i read about that awhile back somewhere in this forum. If anyone has more info please report back. Don't mean to highjack the thread but think it might tie in. I'm particularly interested in removing the screensaver images but don't think that's possible.

Found it here. I'm not certain but believe the last post in the thread mentions a way to delete them (root only.) I say not sure because I haven't had time yet. There's also info on using cloud photos if you're a prime member.

I think the downloaded screensaver images went away when I cleared the cache from the Amazon photo app...
