Can I get more storage space? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey, I have searched a bit for an answer here but can anyone actually tell me if I can get a larger SD card or more gigabytes for storage on my Samsung galaxy nexus??
Cheers

No. Only way to get more space is using a kernel which supports USB hosted storage.
It is too risky trying to change the memory chip (i imagine soldering is needed) already installed in your phone.

For any OS but Windows, that would be good, but Windows does support the MTP mode of the Galaxy Nexus.

OK. Bummer
I'll just have to deal with it then. Something to definatly look out for on my next phone phone

What I'm planning on doing is this:
I've ordered one of these: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/USB-Host-Ada...s=63&clkid=7945018501273467967#ht_1590wt_1067
Hoping it works on the G Nex, I think it should.
And then I'm getting one of these: http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?id=10425
Gonna basically have a little microUSB flash drive. I'm just gonna plug the moskeyto into my computer every now and then to sync, but I think it's the best solution for being able to carry larger files I want to use on my phone.
I'm not sure its gonna work yet. Gonna test my existing drive with the host adapter before buying the new drive, but for $2, its worth giving it a shot.

Another option if you've got a microsd card laying around from a previous phone (like I do) is to get that same OTG cable and a mini microsd reader like http://www.amazon.com/ELAGO-Mobile-Reader-World-Smallest-EL-RD-012/dp/B002K7EJDK
Now suddenly that 16GB microsd isn't as useless as it was although you'd still have to put up with the terribad transfer speed.
Speaking of which, do they publish the Moskeyto's read/write xfer speed? I mean you know, it doesn't actually matter on the device (as long as its fast enough to stream a 720p video without any issues) but it does matter when you're just trying to get some data on it from your PC .
On a related note re: storage space, I got Google Play Music working 2 nights ago and I must say that I'm impressed at how seamless it works. It's also nice having my entire active-music library, has also meant that I can trim my "offline" sync playlist even more to save more space. This space saving method, of course, does mean you gotta have a decent data plan if you wanna stream and drive.

Cheers everyone. At least I have a couple options now.

[Q] Internal memory of Nexus

Can ne1 tell me how much internal memory the Nexus has? I've read two conflicting stories, one stating the Nexus has 16GB and the other stating it has 32GB.
The GSM version has 16GB whereas the Verizon exclusive LTE version has 32GB.

Here's a better question... Anyone with the Nexus able to tell has how much it ACTUALLY has available to us from the get-go? We all know 16GB doesn't really mean 16GB.

Yeah cause its so easy and stylish to be using a phone with a USB drive dangling from it.... but yes that does happen to be our only option for expanding memory sans cloud storage

for me the 13GB is enough for my most listened to music, around 2-3GB. a few TV shows, of which standard dev is only 350MB, HD is 1GB and the rest for apps.
then i'll plug in my 1TB hard drive if i want to watch an HD movie.
but if the 13GB is not enough then you just gotta wait for the 32GB, which will probably be only 28-29G actually.

but now you have a portable hard drive you're carrying around with your phone
that's more like "burden created", not "problem solved".
So far I'm good with the 16 (or 13gb) you get with the phone. I filled up a first gen iPod 32gb with music and random apps but noticed I really don't listen to a lot of the music I have on there, so for this phone I only put the music I really listen to often on it and synced everything else with Google Music. You can choose songs to remain cached and available offline if you really want it to stay on the phone so no worries about low connectivity. I'm never really in a position to have the time to watch multiple movies on my phone and Netflix is more than enough if I am in that position. Podcasts are the only thing that get me because I always forget to delete them. I averaged around 1-2gb of free space on my NS and I've scrapped a lot of unnecessary self inflicted bloat on this phone so I should be good until this time next year when the next nexus comes out.

I have ZERO music on my phone. I just put all my music on Google Music and have the GM app on my phone so that way I have all my music all the time. Sure it has to stream it but hay that is what a charger it for!!! I do have a few songs on there just to make ring tones with. but its less then 10 song. Just my 2 cents

it depends on how you look at it.
for me 13GB is more than enough for my daily use.
with the adapter i can use one of my 32GB flash drives, which obviously are very small, or i can use my hard drive.
now if i'm on a plane or at school, i'll have the hard drive with me and it's not an issue. It just comes down to how you use your device and what your doing. for me this is an awesome way to get around the 13GB and still be able to watch my bluray rips on the phone.

do this. only way to do it UNLESS your PS3 is hacked and you can load a FTP program on there.
Damn that sucks. Its just a PIA to do all that transferring. It does kind of suck to have 32gb that can't be partitioned. Do you guys think there will ever be a way to partition it?

Why would you ever want that? The whole idea of unpartitioned storage w/ MTP is that its less of a hassle. You're just creating more problems by introducing different formatting and partition tables. Kinda funny how everyone complained on old phones dealing with partitions, "low storage" errors, and Apps2SD... now that they have large internal storage and no partitions they hate it too.
Just leave it be. It works really well (on the aggregate) and its the way that Google wants it. I don't see them ever going back to partitions and UMS. Better get used to it.
I just want to be able to connect to my PS3 because my laptops were stolen when my apt. was burglarized, and the only place I have media is on my PS3. I'm not looking to make things difficult. I just think that Samsung already did that by not making it USB compatible with devices such as PS3, tvs, sound systems, etc. Especially these days. My 5 year old Sansa Clip will connect to any media device, I'd like to think the GNex is more advanced than that. Just my opinion...

Well I'm sorry that your laptop was stolen, but that's not Samsung's fault (and btw it was Google's decision on the design and implementation of the storage, not Sammy). Single internal storage and MTP is more advanced and overall a better solution. I think that asking most people, they'd take this solution over the partitions and UMS that allows them to connect to a PS3...
I hear you. I know people didn't just buy this phone to connect to PS3 and to me, it really is a small price to pay for an otherwise great phone. (It's probably gonna make me get a new cpu)lol But its pissin me off that this elite smart-phone can't do something my LG Dare did! I just wanna make sure its not a "pebkac" problem.

Do you want to actually transfer or would streaming be fine? If streaming is okay, I suggest imediashare from the Play Store. You can stream images and videos to your PS3 this way(tried it myself today)

I tried imediashare and it only seems to let me copy to my PS3, not from. All share from samsung worked on my og epic and actually recognized it as a device. I cant find an apk to it tho. I wonder if that would work? Does someone have an apk of that or samsung apps?

It works fine with old technology. PC's recognize a GNex (or any camera, for that matter) in MTP/PTP mode and transfer files without issue. I think you're confusing an "issue" on the Galaxy Nexus with an actual issue on the side of the PS3 not recognizing MTP/PTP...
MTP isn't some fancy new technology. It's been around forever (since at least Windows XP). It's not like Google invented MTP for use on the Galaxy Nexus (it was actually invented by Microsoft) just to piss everyone off.
And as I said before... single, non-expandable internal unpartitioned storage and MTP are here to stay and you're just going to have to deal with it. Google isn't going to change this, and I for one am happy they've made this decision. Really wish people would quit *****ing about it. If you don't like MTP, don't buy the Galaxy Nexus. You'll be missing out on a great device for a silly reason.

Small compact OTG micro sd card reader

ill be ordering this http://www.meenova.com/ and just thought id share it with you all, seeing as the nexus 5 doesnt have a sd card slot
whats great about it is that it can attach to a keyring, so that you can always have it with you and not forget it

Thanks! I think I will buy this too
I bought a Meenova USB OTG adapter/card holder and put a uSD SanDisk 64GB in it (formatted to FAT32). It works well with Nexus Media Importer https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.homeysoft.nexususb.importer I have read that Stickmount works well if you are rooted. I was able to copy files to and from the uSD card and phone or play media right off the uSD card.
What a good find!!! Thank you so much! Wish it would come in red though.
Look nice, I bought something similiar that double as a usb cable too. It is very useful on the keychain.
This looks awesome, now I just need to decide on color... Black or Orange for my black N5..... hmmmmmm
I ordered one. with 32gb i never really see the need, but i'll use it to hold movies/files when i travel instead of loading them on my nexus.
I read about this a few days ago. I'm 95% sure im going to root my phone because to my understanding I wouldn't be able to load up a microsd without it correct? Getting this if I do not would be a waste of an investment, right?
I have a Rooted Nexus 7, but never tried to load anything via OTG before
I was beginning to regret not getting a 32GB Nexus 5 but this may work. I hope it works with a Spigen Ultra Hybrid.

There are at least two ways to use an USB OTG setup with an unrooted N5.
Use Nexus Media Importer (link in my previous post).
Use Total Commander file explorer with USB Stick Plugin https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ghisler.android.TotalCommander&hl=en and https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.hechler.tcplugins.usbstick
Nexus Media Importer is not free, but I found it much more polished and easier to use. USB Stick Plugin for Total Commander is a trial program, but just makes you download the new version every month when it expires. If you are going to root anyway, then you might as well go with Stickmount. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.stickmount&hl=en since it is free. If you are thinking about rooting, go ahead and unlock your bootloader now so all the setup you do on your phone between now and then doesn't get wiped when you do root and need to unlock your bootloader.
Thanks for that info! Very helpful.
Yea - I'm almost sure I want to root it. There's a toolkit for Mac in the other section which people have used successfully. I rooted my N7 a while back and have loaded roms and backed up with Titanium. So I'm sort of familiar - I guess it's a slight fear of something unexpected happening. but you're right, the longer I wait, the more of a PITA it's going to be to set everything back up.

Mini MicroSD Card Reader for Android by Meenova (Expandable Storage for your N5)

Hey guys, so I thought I might write my opinion on this awesome piece of technology that is called Mini MicroSD Card Reader for Android.
First, for those of you who are not familiar with it:
This thing allows you to have expandble storage for you Nexus (or almost any other Android phone).
I bought it because I like installing a lot of ROMs, watching a lot of movies, etc. So all I have to do is to hook the Micro SDcard reader into my Nexus 5 and just like that, all of my data is there.
This is the link to their website: http://www.meenova.com/st/p/m3r.html
It even comes with a little keychain holder. It so small and compact that you wouldn't even regret spending 12$ on it. And you can even pick a color.
Note: For this to work, you need to install a free app from the Play Store called "StickMount". It's made by Chainfire, and it's free, although you can purchase it to support him.
I attached some photos down below and I also urge you to watch some videos about how simple it is.
Continue watching other videos about this, just so that you would be sure that you want it: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=mini+micro+sd+card+reader+meenova
I bought it and Im very happy with it. It works perfectly.
I have and it works normally.
There's Already a thread on this. You could've just posted your thought on it in that thread
Works like a champ!

Wish they would have put some more thought/design into the USB adapter.
Otherwise, this looks like a great item. On the fence about getting one.
Breakdown of the reader
I used it for several months with no problem at all.
Exfat and NTFS worked with card to 64gb in FAT32...
Recently, it is not any more recognized on telephone or computer.
Tested with various cards : 4gb, 8gb, 32gb and 64gb.
Under different format.
Anybody had this problem?
Thank you
I had the same problem. It was dead. They replaced it for free...all they required were a few pictures of the meenova not functioning.

I'm not sure how good it is, but it's 4 times cheaper, so might be worth it? Slightly bigger though, as it also has the usb to pc connection. There were a few other different ones on that site, might be worth a look if you don't mind waiting 20 days for china to ship it to you
Micro USB to Type A Adapter
FWIW, the Meenova comes with a micro USB to type A adapter that allows it to be used with a notebook or PC without removing the SD card. Of course that can be purchased separately and probably doesn't justify the cost differential but I also think the Meenova reader is smaller and lighter which could be a factor if you plan to move the phone while using it.

SGS9/+ OTG and HDMI Out Simultaneously?

Hello,
We're in the market for phone upgrades. I currently have a Pixel XL and my spouse still has his Nexus 5x. We're giving some thought to the SGS9+, if we can find a BOGO type deal as TMO did several times last year. While they aren't that exciting, I do like the addition of Samsung Pay that works with any strip reader and some of the other features (though we aren't completely sold on it yet).
We're traveling and typically bring a streaming stick which works in most places. But the internet in our current place is just too show so it doesn't work at all. We happened to have an external hard drive with some media files on it but we're currently having to use a Windows laptop to run the files since the stuck doesn't have a USB in.
I'm wondering if it's possible to use the SGS9+ as an OTG to read the external hard drive while using the HDMI out at the same time? Can I charge too? Would some sort of a USB C dock work for this? Or something else? Thanks so much in advance!

Maybe to late of a reply, but i think your refering to the samsung dex pad. It has 2 usb ports, 1 hdmi out, ethernet. Phone connects to dock via usb c. Kind of expensive tho $99. You can also buy a generic version that does the same thing on amazon for $30. It doesnt look as pretty, but functionality is the same.
