YouTube, VUDU and others no 1080p - OnePlus 3 Questions & Answers

So I know it's talked about in a few different places, mainly articles. But why is this not a major complaint forcing OnePlus to get it fixed? It's driving me insane... Any 1080p videos with 60fps just simply will not play in anything higher than 480p. I know some people are blaming YouTube but now I'm noticing it in my VUDU app as well... Cannot play ANY movie in HD or HDX... Or even download them in a higher quality. That's making me think it's the phone again for some reason.

It's not OnePlus though. There are numerous topics on XDA having this sort of issue on numerous different phones. I personally had this problem but for some reason I can view 60fps videos on YouTube now after deleting the app's data and cache a couple of times and rebooting the phone.

Multitouch Problems

Hello I just got my nexus yesterday and know when I have tried it for a while I notice that the touch is very bad anyone else have experienced this?
Look at video: lol I haven’t made 8 posts so can’t post the video here
It is not only in the app in the video, noticed it when I was playing games really annoying. The weird thing is that sometimes it works as it should and then after a while it becomes like this
Just did a quick review on youtube and it seems that multitouch sucks. While it can handle up to 10, it seems they wig out.
On the Nexus One, it had problems when the axis crossed paths. The Nexus One problems restricted lots of gameplay because of this. While I'm not a heavy gamer, I do download and try games pretty often.
You can test the multitouch with "antutu tester" in the market

Supposedly its just from programs that aren't updated properly to ICS. I read some apps properly register inputs but some flak out. So perhaps a kernel fix or time. Puts me at ease.

Why is video playback quality so poor?

It is really sketchy and not good quality at all, my GS2 has better video playback quality
YouTube looks crap, ESPN goals does too (you can hardly see the football) and so does any videos loaded through the browser
What are your thoughts?
Cheers

Are you on WiFi or 3G? Are you using HQ option? Have you tried watching HD film trailers? Like one of these: (that was the first trailer I saw, introduced by one of the XDA members)

Is that the same GS2 you tried to scratch the screen off before you got rid of it? (But still have it.)

The one I got rid of had dead pixels so it was being exchanged by the network and that is the one I did the scratch test on because I didn't care what the network thought due to the way they pissed me around. The replacement which I am contracted to, I still have.

Yeah I've tried it mate, thanks... if I can I will try and get a video to show it.
Can it be due to the GPU?

Well as long as you know I'm not trolling, I love this site, this nexus and the S2
But I am just trying to patch some of the things on the nexus I don't like by getting other people's opinions on how to fix it, eg how to improve the video playback quality

How about an actual video file you copy to the device?
Does it look bad then?
I think netflix looks like **** on this phone.. though I attribute that to the fact that it isn't in HD..
Download a nice .mkv 720p HD trailer from the web, and view. It looks stunning.

Anything you'd recommend mate?
And do you think the videos I have mentioned look bad due to them not being optimized?
What I can't understand is why the i4 videos are so stunning clear yet these aren't when there isn't much PPI difference
that's the problem of the super HD devices
regular videos optimized for the web are too low quality for the phone
you will need at least videos optimized for 480 if not 720 for it to look good
so in youtube you need to select 480 if 720 is not available
that means you will also eat a lot more DATA if you are on 3G / 4G
this is one of the many reason why GN wasn't so appetizing to me
specially when 3G & 4G networks are not as fast as they advertise them to be

Data isn't a problem for me with 3's "All you can eat data" but the video optimization is, I am a bit gutted about the quality
Thanks for explaining tho mate
download jetvd, a google search will do. then view it in 720p or you can download it to your phone in 720p
As for YouTube are you watching from the browser or the app itself?
I compared an HD video in the youtube app between the Galaxy Nexus and the SGS2 and the Nexus wins hands down... the detail is far superior because of the newer youtube app on the nexus. When the SGS2 gets ICS and/or the same youtube app as the nexus then maybe it'll be closer.
For large MKV files the SGS2 will win because samsung supplies codecs to view almost any video you throw at it, where as the nexus is constrained by the codecs that AOSP supports, which isn't nearly as expansive.
I have no clue what the **** the OP is talking about.
Check out the 2012 trailer in HD (should be the first in YouTube when searching for "HD 2012 trailer"). And make sure it actually has the "HD" icon in the vid list when you get your search results.
There is a little frame stutter... but hell, my $2000 i5 + ATI 6990 triple monitor gaming system also has frame stutter with YouTube (nature of FLV). The clarity on the other hand actually surprised me. It's just as good if not completely equal to 1080p MP4 videos (like Kanye's 'Lights') which also play awesome.

Download this video file to your phone and play it. If this doesn't blow you away then I don't know what could.
Aurora - Timelapse
video credits goto TSO Photography and I am just using it for demo purposes. No intention to violate any copyrights to the owner. Mods, please remove the link if you see this is in violation to rules. I apologize in advance.
What do you guys use to play MKVs?
The SGS2 has its own codecs, when I used other ROMs I would use Moboplayer.
But Moboplayer won't download any codecs on the Galaxy Nexus so it's basically useless. Next I tried Rock Player, with hardware decoding I get good video but no sound and in software decoding I get good audio but suttering video.
So what to do? Re-encoding is a pain...

YouTube 1080p Lag

Okay, so I have been watching videos from the full YouTube site and they work perfectly on 720p. When I play the videos on 1080p, the videos lags, giving me something like 1 FPS. Is there a solution to this problem? Is it something with the phone or is it YouTube's problem? If anyone has any sort of insight on this problem, please post. If you are having the same problem, also post.

Your internet speeds aren't high enough probably?
There is enough hate in the world. Why can't we all get along here ...?
I just checked it myself. I have the same problem. Maybe the device doesn't support 1080p playback. Which is odd, I thought it recorded in 1080p.

YouTube 1080p runs in flash..what's you expect..also..why in the world would you watch a 1080p video on a 480p screen?
Try a different browser

Before we had root in the first days of the sgs2, i was able to watch 1080 videos wonderufully on YT also, epicmealtime fyi. I tried it today and the stock browser lags. =/
Why? Why do you need to see 1080P videos on a screen that only does 480P? And of course it'll lag it's running on flash on a website not optimized for mobile. Geez this is a phone not a desktop gaming rig.
It's not your phone it's youtube it's self. Youtube has always lagged on 1080p videos. My desktop has problems with it and I have 8 gig ram. Intel i7 sandy bridge with AMD Radeon HD 6990. Ever since youtube upgraded their interface it has been plagued with problems. My connection is 20 down 5 up.
The phone can run hi 10bit 1080p blue ray h.264 mkv videos with the lowest and highest encode possible with out losing frames. Which looks better than anything you can possibly stream. There is nothing on youtube worth watching in 1080p most videos are upscaled anyway. Which really isn't 1080p anyway.

I watch 1080p videos because they look much clearer and less grainy than both 720p and 420p. I have tried different browsers but the same problem arises.

I think you need a quad core processer in order to watch 1080p videos.., my tab 10.1 can`t play 1080p videos...... it has the screen for it which leads me to believe it`s the processer

I bet if I had 3 identical gsIIs one displaying 480 video, 720, and 1080 you wouldn't be able to pick which one is which.

I think many of us are spec whores because we want a mobile desktop experience/replacement/all-in-one mega device and I don't think you picked up your GS2 without thinking the same.
I bet i could jesse james. How bout you run a vid on all three options and take a screenie and post. Im not looking to start something, i just want to prove a point

Never mind. My logic was wrong but I watch CoD vids mostly so I can only tell the difference in such videos. But i hope you get my point. I want to maximize my phone's use.

[Q] Can this play high 720p/10 bit/1080p files smoothly?

One of the main reasons I plan on purchasing this is because of the the so called video playback. I plan on mainly watching movies and anime on this tablet and I was wondering how is the playback for 10 bit/10p mkv files?
I'm also curious to see whether it's safe to watch high resolution mkv files without overheating the tablet since I'll be watching it a lot during the night.
Thanks in advanced.
Yes to everything. All new tablets are capable of playing this format with no issue. You just need an app like BS Player. I play and stream 8gb mkv files all the time

I also heard that MXPlayer is the best right now? Also does your tablet overheat after watching/streaming all day?

I've heard that that Nexus 7 is prone to heatup when watching HD quality videos? So is it prone to heat if I watch for hours on end? I'll be playing mainly 720p 8 bit stuff.

I recommend MX Player, I watch 1080p movies all the time with it, however when it comes to big(over 5gb) 1080p mkv files I recommend BS Player.

Good to know. So when you watch for 5+ hours the tablet doesn't overheat?
+1 to mx player. I haven't found a video file it cannot play. Install the DTS plugin here off of XDA to play files with that sound format. I use it in conjunction with ES file explorer to stream video's over my network and even through wireless 1080p mkv's play flawlessly.

I haven't noticed any issue with getting warm playing videos but it sure gets warm when recording 1080p or doing multiple 360° photos.
I'm running a kernel with better thermal throttling. And its not gotten warm like it used to just takes a bit longer if it needs to just to keep cool.

No, the only time I've noticed a little warm is when playing high graphics games and when it's charging while using it, the common stuff that usually get it warm. no problems with over heat here on mine.
i have never watched movies for 5+ hours straight on my tablet. i watch a two hour movie or one hour show, and never had heat problems.
Thanks for all your responses everyone. I'm probably going to buy this today.

Modern Combat 5 is out

Game seems pretty cool so far but it tries to connect online at every mission start. It's also a bit choppy and the graphics seems pixelated. Hopefully there will be an update to fix the 2 issues I'm having.

There are actually tons of reviews mentioning the same thing on many devices!
