Having finally achieved root today (LOL - 24hrs after I received the device!), I tried to live with Touchwiz. However, one thing that was bothering me was the huge icons...having just come from an Atrix which has a 4" display and slightly higher-res screen, I wanted to use more screen real estate.
So I installed LCD Density.
Problem is, with TW, it's a complete was. The dumb "dots" that are normally at the bottom of the screen just "move up" and waste the extra space you've just won.
Solution - install a launcher such as Go Launcher. Results are that icons are smaller with more screen real estate. Magical!

Nah,
What annoys me is why my messaging icon is stock, and the others are themed! I can't seem to find the icon on the interwebs either to manually set it!
202 Density with 5 x 5 grid in Go Launcher makes this device WAY more productive!!!

Wow this is very nice Thanks!
I am also coming from the Moto Atrix and the lower res on bigger screen was really bugging me.

Get LCD Density changer and set to 202 and save. Then hit menu key, settings and tick "Set as my system density"" - it will now be that every time you boot, so max sure it's a density that works....
or, edit the build.prop directly and change the density figure there. Save, reboot....voila! Both need root.
Try changing font to Helvetica S from display settings. It fits better than droid font on higher res

pictures do not look good at 200
240 is the correct dpi for HD at this screen resolution.
Was running 190 on my DHD looked better than 240. You need to edit build.prop once rooted for a permanent DPI change.
You can permanently chance the density using blade buddy, which it's free in the market.
Does anyone know why people are using 202?
I calculated the options by doing 800 * 240 and 480 * 240, then looking for numbers that left integers when devided by both. So the same number of sub pixels were used to make each pixel. Doing this gave me 200 not 202 as the best.

192 (not 182) is another good dpi settings as it give you a 1000x600 equivalent res

Is there any way to stop dialer looking screwed up when you change the lcd density?
It makes the keypad smaller and off centre.
Also in the camera app the buttons become misaligned.
I changed the screen dpi to 200 but now miui launcher looks weird.
So I'm using adw launcher with 1 extra row and looks nice, however I like the way miui launcher functions, like when I install a app it immediately puts it on desktop, just like the iphone.
Is there any launcher that acts like this and also allows to change number of rows and columns?
this is miui default, folders and other widgets look even weirder

You change the LCD density string in build.prop to set it permanently, or use lcd density changer from the market to do a temp change.
You can use a tool called "Absolute System" to edit the build.prop easily.

changing the lcd density has the same same effect as changing the resolution on your pc monitor. the phone will fit more on the display, so smaller icons and text etc...
any of this apps are changing the phone dialer too ?.....???
None of the sammy aps like dialer change with DPI changes, everything looks smaller and a bit crap, you will either need to find a ROM with DPI changes built in for that or there might be a theme you can use maybe.
My theme is built for changed DPI (shameless plug)

Yes, TouchWiz doesn't play nice with DPI changes. Use Go Contacts (includes dialer) for dialer - I haven't found a MULTI-DPI camera replacement yet tho.

Changing LCD Density
Changing the density changes the whole phone - if you set density to a lower number everything will be smaller on the screen and then you can fit more items on the screen. A higher number will make things bigger and fit less.
An unfortunate side effect of changing DPI however is that quite a lot of apps don't like it and will force close when you try and open them. For example, I just set mine to 200dpi and Angry Birds FC's.
The Market is another app that seems to be fairly DPI sensitive, however in my case right now running CM7 nightly the Market is working fine at 200dpi.
Another effect can also be black bands around apps that are not written to scale to screen DPI but rather with hard coded sizes for LDPI/MDPI/HDPI.
Cheers!

like I said in my first post, I'm using ADW and it works fine with it, I was looking for a miui like launcher, with all the apps on desk and no app drawer, probably doesn't exist.
While I was on miui rom I didn't encounter problems with the apps I used, this goes from games to standard apps, like the market.
Now I'm on stock and I saw the dialer is small, but no problem otherwise, when I get called the slider works fine.
the advantage is it makes the screen seem like higher res, browser fits a lot more content, holding it next to a sensation it looks the same, one difference I encountered on sensation is a game megajump, doesn't fill out the screen while on sgs2 with dpi change it still does.
it probably looks so good because of the samoled + subpixel density stuff
It makes it look extremely hi-res. I can't, no, WON'T have my phone at stock DPI, ever.

Hey guys, after a while I realized that quite a lot of people prefer lower than stock LCD densities on their phones. At first I thought it was stupid, until I tried it and now I can't go back to 240 without swearing because everything is too big.
My problem,as everyone else's,is with the Market not showing apps as compatible. So two days ago I stumbled upon this guide for modifying the Market.apk.I did everything the guy said to the letter(although I signed using Signapktik on my phone instead of SignApk),and it worked at first.I don't know how and why,but is stopped working after a while and it still doesn't work.I've modified more Market apk's,including the newest 3.5.15,but it still doesn't work.
Below is attached the latest one I made.I think,if someone can do something to help, many people will benefit from this.
Thanks in advance guys!

Yes,this thing with the Market is a pain in the butt. The guide was just what some guy in the Android Themes and Apps section followed to mod Market 3.4.6 .In his thread reports were the same.It worked for some time and then stopped.I think it didn't work for everyone though.
However,my knowledge on apk editing is less than minimal. So I hoped that someone more knowledgeable than me would take it from here.I tried and,for the time being, failed.Maybe I will try again tomorrow...
Turns out that there is a temporary solution to density problems with the market. We just have to follow a certain procedure. So,supposing we all want to lower our lcd density and not increase it,we should do the following in the given order(as LordClockan's IceColdSandwich rom says-it's based on AOKP I think):
i)Using whatever method you like(I prefer Root Explorer, but you can also do it via other apps or even adb) change ro.sf.lcd_density=240 in your build.prop to ro.sf.lcd_density=160.
ii)Reboot.
iii)Once booted,go to Settings>Applications>Application Management(Or whatever,my menus are Greek)>"All" tab and find Market/Google Play Store.Clear its data.
iv)Go back to your homescreen, open Market/Play store and hit accept in the prompt.
v)Then again, change your lcd density to whatever value you want.Mine is ro.sf.lcd_density=200 for example.
vi)Check if it works.I suggest searching for Mobile Odin in Play Store because it shows up as incompatible with non-normal densities. You can check with any app you know that is incompatible with low densities. If it works, you're okay.If it doesn't,repeat from step (i).
I found that,if not followed to the letter,it won't work,so don't skip any steps.I hope this helps until a permanent solution shows up.Unless this is a permanent solution after all...

However, what makes the method I posted effective,is that it will work with any version of the Market, new or old.I for one am using latest 3.5.15 with no issues.

Well, yes: TouchWiz isn't designed to run on any resolution, so you're having this problem. The Email app and Dialer are smaller than normal - they're not handling other densities than 240. Strangely, Messaging works just fine.
Thanks. Oh well back to 240
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
Why ? unless you have poor vision (which I can understand), everything looks much better at a higher density; you should see it on 160, it's like a shrunk tablet
Just get a better launcher (Apex Launcher or Go Launcher are both good) which can be adjusted for the new screen density and you're good to go ! perhaps get a new email app and a new dialer if their small size bothers you.
Tried launcher pro and it was fine. But the issue with email and dialer would annoy me.

I was wondering what is the best DPI for my Galaxy Note 2, I tried other people's suggestions but it didn't work for me so I was wondering how Google decided on their DPI. Considering they're in charge of Android they must know the optimal level so I used the Nexus 7 and the Nexus 4 as reference:

So if Google designed a 5.5 inch screen device with 720x1280 resolution, it would most likely be at 270 DPI
I know this won't help a lot of you how it helped me but just thought I'd share it just on the hunch that it might at least help the 1% :silly:

My personal favorite is 240 which is 25% less than the standard 320. It is best if you could use the dpi per app mod if you are running a touch wiz based rom. I am personally on the aosp vallina rom and loving the customization. Some apps work better with a higher dpi like the one you use to scan for example a starbucks card and other like email work better at a lower dpi. With android you can customized your dpi per application.
I use 220 system wide, and make exceptions as needed.

I am using Liquid Smooth, Android 4.2.2, Matrix kernel overclocked to 2.0GHZ, at 182 dpi. I love it!! Its like having a tablet as a phone. Google Play shows completely different, gmail is in dual view mode, and everything just shows up so much clearer and fresher. I wouldn't go to 160 dpi as things are too small for me to tap on while I drive. 182 dpi is by far the best resolution to me.
Nice one!
I loved your idea but I would like to point out that you have disregarded the proportions by taking the average of the two devices. Mathematically speaking, If the display was ((4.7+7)/2) = 5.85 inches your calculation would be sound. But if you consider the proportions we get,
213+[(7-5.5)/(7-4.7)]*(320-213) --> Using the interpolation method (Never thought I would apply my statistics knowledge like this)
= 282.78 dpi
Though personal preferences may differ.
I love 182 dpi but I was curious I'm running touchwiz rom and using xposed. Is there something I can change the DPI on to get the status bar to not show up all small? Thanks!

Hi,
The method that works for sony z5 premium to change default screen to 2k applies to the SWR50 smartwatch. see here :http://forum.xda-developers.com/z5-premium/general/changing-resolution-default-to-2k-root-t3282319
Just turn on debugging via adb on watch, if you dont have dev options enabled tap build version 5 times. Then enable debugging via dev options and make sure you have adb tools installed
adb.exe shell
default size is 320x320
@Tetra wm size 480x480
leave the default wm density at 280
This stays after reboot until you set wm size back to default
you can get more info on screen and the cards look better, I haven't found any problems yet. will report if I do.
good luck

Guys... you do realize that changing the virtual resolution does not make the screen sharper?
Just leave it at 320x320 (which is the physical res), there is no benefit of a higher resolution.
