Hi guys,
Has anyone managed to properly run pokemon GO, and if so, what ROM are you using?
Curently I'm using the ZMOD 5.1.1 (Maguro) but whenever I try to sign in with my Google account, the app just closes.
regards
Yer I'm getting the same crash point, using a cm13 ROM.
Kinda doubt it will ever run on this phone, game requirements are asking for 2GB RAM.
I can run it with the CM13 ROM but my phone gets really hot and crashes/reboots after 5-10mins of playing

Who would've thought the mighty Gnex can run Pokemon Go?
Works fairly well considering it's using 300mb RAM ;P
Catching Pokemons is sometimes pretty laggy with the virtual reality mode turned on (using the camera), but with it turned off its fairly close to fluid
Thanks for your work again
PS: Might try CM13, as some more RAM might help performance

It hot rebooted for me on CM12.1 once, when I opened it for the first time. But at that point the phone was up for a couple of days. Works fine on 12.1 when freshly booted.
Played for over an hour yesterday. No complaints.
Can't post any proof right now, as the servers are down again
Shine ROM 340 mb RAM
Try SHINE ROM
-Laggy but works out.
-I did´t installed gapps but i think they are in the ROM.
-And stop google automatic update.
-Download the APK 29.2
-You are rdy for you lag experience.
-First try to open arena didnt worked sorry boys.
Update to 4.3 will come out?
I have it running on Resurrection Remix ROM (marshmallow) (toroplus) but often crashes.

I swapped over to CM12.1 and it works way better. It still gets warm, but no where near as much as before. I can charge and play the game. I had the game running for about 3h ( about 1h of that being charging ) before it went to hot and force rebooted. I think that is more then okay as you rarely will have the app open with out breaks for that long. With closing the app every now and then ( just locking the screen) the game runs without an issue what so ever. I still get weird artifacting on the map for some reason and it has hick ups every now and then, but tbh it just seems to be the game in a lot of the cases. So I think 12.1 CM is certainly the way to go with this one.
I'm using Ziyan CyanogenMod 13.0 (07/06) and it is so laggy it is unplayable, even when scrolling in the pokemon list or in menus,
sometimes it gets more fluid in map mode, but that doesn't last for long, also quite often it hangs totally or reboots the whole phone.
Why is that? Ingress works so well...

Pokémon go is a lot heavier than Ingress.
Scrolling in menus is also rather slow for me, but it works.

I think I've found out why: my phone without opening any app, just right after boot has about 755-770MB of RAM used out of 970,
apparently Pokèmon go manages to use up to 500+MB of RAM, so that is the main problem, there's not enough free memory so the phone first starts swapping and then freezes when it can't keep up.
There should be some major flaw in the Pokémon Go up to be such a memory hog.
Out of curiosity how much free RAM do you guys have on a freshly booted GNEX with CM12 and CM 13?

The Gnex is handed down in the family, so I cannot check right now, but you could prevent a lot of your apps from starting at boot in settings.
Are you using the official Facebook apps? They are horrible memory wise.
No I'm not using any facebook app since I know how much they suck. I only use Swipe and I've disabled all the apps that don't need to start at boot time.
Fact is that just looking at the memory stats for the last 3h it says that 304MB are used by Android OS, 91MB by Google Play Services, 88MB by Android System, 66MB by System UI, 37 by messaging system, 26 by Trebuchet, 14 by Android Keyboard, 9.2MB by Google Play Music and so on. Those are already whoopping 635.2MB used by very basic and needed system apps.
Now the system seems to have stabilized after a while using about 722MB out of 970, but it is still too much IMHO considering I have really few apps open and beside the not mentioned Line app (since it's not fundamental) that uses 31MB all the rest are small things...
Just realised the app was crashing for me because I set a limit on background apps. #derp
As many of you said, the game is Starting and running quite well on CM12.1.
But there are other things to consider. In my case, my main problem is that, with these overloaded servers, if you don't have a reliable and fast network the game won't log in. So if the game stops (very usual) and you have to restart it without wifi, sometimes it's impossible. For example, connected to wifi the game starts almost 90% of the time, but when you get out in the wild you can find it hard to reconnect.
The navigation throught menus and items it's also difficult, and battling in a gym is complicated...
I guess the main problem will always be available ram memory...
Just signed up to say that CM 12.1 works better than CM 11.
With CM 12.1 there is some lag and draw flickering. With CM 11 the game would crash a lot and the player would stand in place and only rotate.
This will suffice until my 6P arrives on Wednesday.

That's not a patch, is the apk file for those who can't download the game on the Play Store if the game is not available in their own region.
I have pokego running on gnex using latest zinjin cyanogenmod (5.1) and it works rather well. Anyways, it's the only app running - i made the phone dedicated pokemon machine
I'm using the OMAP4 AOSP Project and it runs. Performance is ok on the main map screen, but as soon as you enter a catch event or a gym battle, there is stutter all over the place. It's also very hard to navigate menus as the frame rate is really low.

Is anyone else having very, VERY slow performance when running the latest version of Android? When I tried the original builds, it was very snappy but crash prone. Now with the latest version of Android (and all the bells and whistles) it seems like it is just too much for my Tilt 2.
Is my phone an anomally or is this typical for the later builds of Android?

If you mean FRX03 build, i confirm that here low performance.
they shouldnt make it HDPI
but i dont care. using Neopeek for 6 months now
There is often a server process that takes up 100% of cpu. Usually you can kill the process and speed up your rhod by
1 - making a phone call
2 - opening up map and places
The devs are working on it. Its reported to happen more with frx03, so if its really bothering you, try frx02.
Also I'm not noticing this with latest kernels, so you could give that a try as well.

Interesting because on my Sprint TP2 I have had to make a phone call on every boot in order to get it to run smooth...never had to do that until the last few kernels...
Mine runes pretty good, very fast and smooth.
the only problem i have is the battery life, it wont survive over night at 100% charge.
i have a t-mobile tp2
good luck.
When my phone i charging is experience very low performance. When typing a sms it will take around 5 minutes to complete. But when i'm not charging it's working great.
To kill your apps use advanced task manager. You can select apps and it will kill it automatically and will kill it self when you exit it.
Don't overclock, it will save you a lot of battery.
Hey guys,
I've recently joined the Galaxy Nexus bandwagon from the Apple Crowd and I'm enjoying the experience thanks to the awesome community here.
However...
As soon as I got the phone I unlocked and rooted. I've been experimenting with Custom Roms, and I'm yet to find a completely smooth "lag free" experience.
What I mean by this, is that using (for example) Spotify and browsing around (nothing intensive) causes an occasional "skip" like you'd hear when your computer is low on memory/cpu cycles when listening to music. This happens in operation and in some ROMS when the screen is locked. I had a shot with Seeder which rinsed the battery and still had a small amount of skipping.
It really comes into its own when installing apps from the Play Store, the phone slows down to a crawl, even freezing for at least 10 seconds while it's sorting out the data, and then not fully going back to smooth after.
I've seen some people recommend going back to Stock, which is no fun, should I really go back to Stock to fix this issue?
What are the "perfect lag free" ROM/Kernel/CPU settings for the Galaxy Nexus that removes these stutters and provides a pure experience?
I understand that's a broad question, so what's your combo and is your experience totally smooth?
i've noticed this too while downloading something from the playstore or my dropbox account, it just lags like crazy. even on my N7 running Dirty AOKP, i just started having problems with that. no matter what i do kernel wise, it still lags. i guess the only way around this is to not use the phone while it's downloading something.
There is nothing you can do - it is related to the hardware of this device overall. The IO performance of this device sucks, plainly. About the maximum transfer speed of the internal SD is roughly 10mb/sec.. compare that to a typical consumer-grade SSD that can write around 200-300mb/sec with a 6gb/sec interface it really puts this in to perspective.. when you're downloading something from the play store it is writing to memory and then installing to SD almost simultaneously, which these operations take priority over the UI thread obviously.
We need higher performance memory and faster SD read/write speeds to overcome this bottleneck. I am unsure of the interface between the memory, sd to the CPU.
Stock ROM does not stutter that much. I'm using AOKP mr1 build5 and it's pretty close to stock when it comes to lag.
Seen some roms freezing for 5 seconds while using market intensively... Crazy
Better then the incredible
I've had the Tab S 10.5 for about a month now and the lag while using everyday apps is driving me crazy. My top three offenders are:
1. Chrome
2. Play Newsstand
3. Play Store
I've done the following to help improve things:
- Changed launcher to Nova.
- Disabled bloatware (everything I can without rooting).
- Installed Chrome Samsung support library.
3D heavy games seem to run fine. My last tablet was a HP touchpad running CM11 so I am used to dealing with a few quirks. I stepped up to the Tab S to get away from some of that though. I know Android is infamous for scroll stutter, but it seems to me that a flagship tablet should easily beat out a bootleg touchpad.
Is this on par? Also, does anyone else's tab s get really hot around the touch screen near the Samsung logo? Maybe the Nexus 9 is worth another look. :silly:
Thanks for your comments.
Edit: I've read similar posts on lag. It seems like the argument boils down to: 1. Personal perception or 2. A mysterious "bad batch" of hardware.
i did the same steps,my tab is full of apps and games but i have 0 lag and the browsing is also fcking smooth. In the settings i also turned of features like dual window.
Are you sure you turned off fully power saving mode? About heating,if i play a game like gta or hearthstone i can also feel a warm area under samsung logo but is not hot and pretty common if you play games.
edith and use chrome beta instead of the standard chrome
Chrome lags on the tab s. Happens to most people. To fix over heating i installed a custom kernel that would optimise and prevent heating. Some big games do lag aswell.

Only on certain apps. Chrome and a few others. On some games it just lags on loading screen but not during gameplay. Watch a veiw reviews on youtube. Theres some videos talking about the lag. Touchwiz launcher also has lag but can be fixed.

I think it depends on your perception of lag and what apps you mainly use. In my case, Chrome and Newsstand are always up so I see the lag constantly. I wish I had a Nexus 9 side by side for comparison. If I get a chance I'll take a video, but it might be hard to see. I played with a demo model at Best Buy and it seemed faster than mine as well.
I came from a iPad mini 2 (last year's model) to this tablet. As smooth as my iPad was I have to say I have very little if any lag on mine. It's runs beautifully for me. I'm OCD, any bit of lag would drive me up the wall. I really don't notice hardly anything. I'm still running bone stock everything minus using Nova launcher. Don't even feel like I need to root or flash anything. Although I'm going to once there is a root released for my model. Maybe I'm just lucky I don't know. Have had zero issues.
I'm used to an overloaded gs3 so this looks ultra smooth to me [emoji3]
It lags more with multiple user logged in, always reboot of you don't need the additional user

For example, this thread's website lags a great deal in chrome beta when scrolling. Other sites aren't too bad. Newsstand is the worst though. Are you using the stock broswer?
This site does lag a little when scrolling. That I do have to admit. For whatever reason it doesn't really bother me however. I've never noticed any scroll stutter on stock android so I attribute it to touchwiz. This thing debloated or running a custom rom probably flys. I imagine any scroll stutter would be gone at that point.
I use the stock browser. I was never a fan of chrome. I know that on touchwiz your going to get the best performance from the stock browser unless there's a fix I'm unaware of which could be a possibility. Newsstand I actually haven't used so I can't speak for it. TouchWiz is just eating up so much ram. I'm like always at 1.5 to 2 gigs of ram with nothing running (other then the tons of unnecessary system apps I can't terminate) That is pretty ridiculous to me. Is touchwiz smooth as stock android? Definitely not. But I really have little to no lag other then scroll stutter on certain sites. I'm still going to root and debloat this thing when it's available for my model so I can truly experience the power of this tablet.
Lol, chrome sucks
It's about time Samsung optimised their flagship device. Had 3 since July and they all lag, stutter when scrolling and render pics poorly. Nova didnt fix the problems and changing some apps like using chrome beta marginally helped.
About time they fixed this via an update rather than just forget about the device and launch more/different models. Samsung will always fail unless it focuses on a core product set and spend the time making the hardware work properly with the software.
I was attacked when I first got my first device for stating lag. Whether an first time user or someone who doesn't want to root (glad I didn't after having 3 replacements), I shouldn't have to kill apps, install different roms and root.
Certain other OS fix problems like these quickly. Where's support from Samsung??
I have the note 4, their es8000 led TV, fridge freezer and various other bits so I'm not a Samsung hater by any means, just someone who expects upgrades to fix problems.
It's hard to determine how much lag is there until you run the same apps side by side with another tablet.
Over Xmas I got a chance to do just that. Ran S 10.5 side by side with my sister's nexus 7 2013. Both running kit kat (hers is 4.4.3 instead of 4.4.2).
Play Store and chrome both run smoother on hers, less jerking and stopping when scrolling. Tapatalk about same. She has Google now launcher, feels faster and smoother than nova launcher on mine. Overall, every thing just feels a little smoother and more fluid.
Granted, the nexus is 1920x1200 so it's pushing fewer pixels around, but the nexus is one year older and I paid $179 for it vs $379 for the S.
I think Samsung slapped on the OLED display and said heh, good enough. Which is true because I bought it
Custom Rom?
I made a rom that is all stock, just a few optimisations. Better performance, better batterylife and so on, here you go:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/development/prerooted-stock-touchwiz-rom-t2973107
I'd use only stock browser, if it had a full screen option and some gestures, but nope.
My alternative browser is maxthon pioneer, it has everything but stutters a lot
I've had my S 10 since August....I don't like chrome, never have, but after reading all this I opened chrome and came to this forum and I see no issues at all. NONE, other than I don't like chrome
I'm stock not rooted or ROMed. I have Apex launcher installed since day one and disabled all the Samsung and google bloat I could disable.
I have no issues with this tablet other than posting on some forums is a little quirky but that's just the way things are. I normally use Dolphin with the Jetpack or Boat Browser for tablet.
I love this tablet! Sure beats the stuffing out of my Asus TF700T! What a total POC that is!

Don't worry about the Lag
This lag on Tab S is only temporarily, the Android 5.0 will get rid of 90% of the lag. I know this for fact because I have Note 3 with Touch-wiz it lags often, after installing Android 5.0 I have NOT ONCE run into lag after 1 month of using it.
As of now, the Tab S is supporting android 5.0 cm 12 which there should definitely be no lag but again its unofficial ROM as of now, there are still things they are working on. Samsung's android 5.0 will get rid significant amount of lag, because Android 5.0 have 60 fps animation smoothness, and efficient RAM usage.
I've also heard rumors Samsung is working to refreshing their Touchwiz Interface with slim amount of lag. So, the future is promising.
As of now, if you really can't stand the lag, Install the Android 5.0 ROM for Cm 12, there are afew things not working in their such as Camera, NFC or something else, but the usage should show NO LAG!!!

Cyanogenmod for Galaxy tab S??
Let me preface this by saying that this is in no way a device comparison thread.
Now that that's out of the way, I want to talk about the RAM. We have 4GB. I have noticed that if I have a web page open in the browser I can go back to it at any time without it having to reload. This is killer!. I have been wanting that for so long. My Nexus 6 can do that up to a point, but even it will start refreshing after a while. I have yet to see the Zenfone 2 do it once. The frustrating thing is, I have a GS6 also and it will do that after only a few apps are opened. It's one of the things I really hate about that phone and which makes it irritating to use.
Here's the thing: Both the GS6 and Asus are running earlier versions of Lollipop, before the memory issues were supposedly fixed. I'm pretty sure that Samsung just has some super aggressive memory management going on. But why doesn't the Zenfone 2 suffer from the memory leak? Why is it not having the same RAM issues that the Nexus 6 had on 5.0? I suppose Zen UI could have something to do with it, but none of the other OEMs have been able to fix the RAM issues with their overlays. Is it just the sheer amount of RAM that makes it less noticeable?
Sound off. Either way, I'm thrilled with the performance of this phone.
My zenfone 2 is getting delivered today. I'm VERY much looking forward to Android 5.1 on it. When my Nexus 5 went from 5 to 5.1, it was sooo much better. I'm expecting the zenfone 2, s6, etc, to see similar improvements.

5.1 Made my Nexus 6 a totally different phone. But the Zenfone 2 is really solid right now. While I'm sure that 5.1 will only make it better (especially the "all cores at once" change), I have zero complaints about performance with this phone.
Combination of Clean Boost thing, as well as a massive amount of RAM.
When I'm idle, I hang around 1.3GB RAM used. I can leave a ton of stuff open in the background for immediate opening and I still only hit around 2.5GB RAM usage. I imagine playing huge games will eat up the rest. The management along with the amount is what makes it so smooth and easy to multitask.
Zenfone 2 will soon get a 5.1 upgrade with a 64 bit os which will make the device a god Eagerly waiting for the 5.1 upgrade. The only thing i wish for is to see some Aosp roms like cm, pa on this device.

I can totally notice the ram leak, my ZF2 ram idles around about 2+gb out of the box. Because it has so much ram you will not notice it.. my nexus 6 with the ram leak patch idles at 1.3gb.. I can only imagine the beast of a fine this will really be.. But I cannot complain, my ZF2 was free thanks the North America launch event asus gave away the 64gb model.
It is possible they included a patch for the memory leak prior to release of their phone. Either that or it some how doesn't apply to the intel atom processor and how it may handle ram.
Strange... I'm on the 2 GB version, and I have constant problems with apps getting closed, presumably due to swapping. Sometimes it gets so bad that even opening Chrome will close out every other app. Normally, I can't seem to keep more than a couple apps open before they start getting swapped out - maybe Hangouts and my podcast app. Is anyone else seeing similar behavior, and/or have a workaround? The "boost" function doesn't seem to do much to help.

Are you rooted? I got rid of all the bloatware, installed greenify, disabled a bunch of non essential apps from starting using auto-start, and I'm not having any issues at all. I have the 2 GB version as well.

1.0GB RAM usage after the phone being on for ~16 hours.

With messaging, books, and email open...stock. There is still a memory leak issue, the only thing is with the 4 gig version you have so much available most cannot tell a difference.
Kernel has KSM support, and init scripts reference a missing init.ksm.rc.
Per https://source.android.com/devices/tech/ram/low-ram.html, the normal settings are:
write /sys/kernel/mm/ksm/pages_to_scan 100
write /sys/kernel/mm/ksm/sleep_millisecs 500
write /sys/kernel/mm/ksm/run 1
Personally, I don't have any complaints about battery life on the zf2, so ymmv with drain from ksm.
Normally saves around 100-150MB, a few times upwards of 300MB. But regardless, this bandaid will not help if you're still barely afloat even after discounting cache.
Can either unpack boot.img and modify the ramdisk (now that bootloader can be unlocked) or use an app / init.d script.
Kernel Adiutor https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grarak.kerneladiutor works well

I face the same problem.... Asus needs to fix it soon.....
After rooting and removing crapware, I see apps getting closed down after opening 2-3 other apps. Really annoying, and not something I'm accustomed to coming from the OnePlus One, Nexus 5, or even the Nexus 4.
Greetings.
In hopes of finding someone who's facing a similar problem, I'd like to ask you about a certain issue.
I've installed the Xperia Play Z Ultimate Edition rom on my Xplay r800i. It's running all cool and great, but there's one problem. The apps are closing for no reason. It's like, one moment you're playing a game, and all of a sudden the main screen appears, as if you pressed the home button, but the app is gone. It looks like they're crashing when the phone is under heavy load. It happens to literally everything. Even Messenger bubbles often disappear when there's a new heavy app starting.
I've searched the rom's thread, but didn't find any information about such problem.
If this matters, I've flashed the kernel that was supplied by rom creator - 480p DoomKernel.
This is the first rom I've seen which has an issue like that, and I don't think there's any alternative, as this is the only ICS rom I know that keeps all of Xplay's core features while significantly improving speed and functionality.
Please help. Does anyone know why this happens?
Update: out of frustration, I've changed to another ICS rom, Honami 2.1.3, together with switching to a Lupus V7 kernel (ram version)... and the same thing happens. Although with the new rom my phone's performance seems to have DRASTICALLY improved, apps are still closing for no reason. There's not even a popup or error, or anything like that - it just pulls the plug and suddenly kicks me to the main screen.
This problem renders heavy games literally UNPLAYABLE. It runs perfect for like 5 or 10 minutes, with high framerate even, then out of a sudden BAM - back to the main screen. No error, no nothing.
Browsing around Lupus settings I've found something called Low Memory Killer. From what I understand, this thing kills the apps when the device is on critically low memory. Maybe this is the cause? And if it is, why the heck is it "going rogue" and killing apps that I'm ACTIVELY USING? How do I configure this? I assume you can't just disable it...
Please help.
Seriously? No one has ANY IDEA what's happening? Please help! I literally have no clue what may be causing this.
Switched to YET ANOTHER rom and kernel - Nexplay, with bundled Lupus kernel, this time also changing the firmware to R800i_4.0.2.A.0.58_Enhanced. With this one, the phone runs definitely the fastest, but guess what... same thing happens as before. Games commit suicide when played for too long. Out of all I've tested, the only ones that don't shut down are OpenTyrian and Nes emulator. Gun Bros worked fine for like 5 minutes, and suddenly closed, working very slow for like 2 seconds before it happened. Same thing with Vendetta Online but this one outright REBOOTED THE PHONE! And these games supposedly are optimized for xplay, so it doesn't make any sense why there's such a problem going on...
I'm starting to wonder if maybe it's because I'm using ICS roms? But then, I've never seen anybody reporting such problems with ANY rom. This definitely isn't a common issue. I'm also using Link2SD, but again, I've never seen anyone mentioning it causing anything like that.
I can relate to your problem. I've experienced the same (apps randomly closing while in use) issues 1 or 2 years ago and to me the development on these roms are dead since the developers have moved onto newer devices. Currently my xperia play is dead (bricked) however with experience of using many of the roms i can safely say that ICS is not meant for the xperia play. Sony themselves didn't officially release ICS for this device due to the number of bugs and problems associated with it. I'd recommend you to use GB roms to bring out the best potential of your device. ICS lags some way or another whereas GB doesn't. All games run smooth on Gingerbread and they certainly do not have issues like ICS does. The best rom for this device is Gin2kitkat ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1631144 ) and my personal favourite Xperia NXT 2 r1 (i've used this rom the longest). Here's the link for that: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1649368
From experience, as long as you use a Gingerbread rom you should be good to go as they are the most stable for our device. Good luck
Aaw, that's a real bummer. The problem with GB roms is that there's a lot of ICS apps and games that I really need. One of the main reasons I've decided to unlock bootloader on this device is because I wanted to get an upgrade to ICS. It's really strange. I've seen people play advanced games on this phone (example) and there are no signs of problems such as the one I'm experiencing.
Thanks a lot for your reply. I guess I'll use one more ICS rom, and if that fails, I'll give GB roms a try.
Btw, what do you think about NXT Gaming rom? I don't care much about flashy UI and widgets, and as long as everything in the phone works (camera, xLoud etc.) priority for me is gaming performance, and from description, this rom seems to be the most aggresive I've seen when it comes for optimizing performance for games.
I agree, from the vid the user is seen to be running the ROM "ICS Ultimate". Also i haven't tried the NXT gaming rom only the NXT 2r1 but regardless, with that rom i've been able to play emulator games and heavy intensive games such as Fifa 2012. I'd only imagine the 'NXT Gaming rom' is faster and better but since i haven't tried it, i'm unable to give you a direct response, sorry. Anyways Gingerbread will always be the best in terms of gaming performance and functionality, but if you're able to find a good ICS rom that is smooth when playing games such as GTA then it's entirely up to you whether you want to stay on ICS or not. Also correct me if i'm wrong but i remember GTA3 (not san andreas) being playable on gingerbread.
Correct, GTA3 DOES work on Gingerbread, but unfortunately only this one and Vice City do so. GTA San Andreas and Chinatown Wars will not work on anything lower than ICS. This is an example anyway, cuz there are few more things that I need and will work only on ICS.
Anyways, guess what. I've tried YET another Rom from a portuguese site (rom is Fusion ICS 2.4), and the problem stopped - apps no longer spontaneously shut down. There's another problem though... as this system is ridiculously unstable. Sometimes it's fast as lightning, then sometimes it slows down to a crawl for no reason - it has nothing to do with active apps; it often happens with no active apps running and with tons of free ram available. It's completely random. Even the interface sometimes crashes for no reason. Curiously though, all games run extremely fast and they never shut down on their own. Unfortunately, it's not worth using such a train wreck. Games running well while the rest of the system goes haywire defeats the purpose for me.
I'd give "ICS Ultimate" rom a try, but for some reason, I get virus alerts when trying to download or open the file. I guess I'll either wait until it's confirmed false alert, or go for GB roms finally.
