Has anyone ever noticed a difference in tethering performance of CM or Sense ROMs. On some cm ROMs my tethering connection from phone to laptop seems to fly. However, on some other cm ROMs the tethering seems to lag. I haven't been on a sense ROM in ages. I live in a place that only offers satellite internet, so I tether my high speed data from my phone to watch Netflix. I'm on an unlimited cricket data plan.

I am running Cyanogen Mod 6 nightly builds. I am using the built in wifi tethering stuff. Does this cost anything extra or does it work the same way that Android Wifi tether does? Thanks!
it should just come out of your data plan.
So I actually pay for - or rather my company does - tethering for my EVO. If I flash the stock deodexed ROM, why can I not use the 4G tethering built into the ROM? Should I be able to? My account might just be provisioned wrong, but I wanted to see if I should expect that to work if I'm paying for it.
Thanks in advance for any answers!
Hot Spot won't work (it disconnects from 4G and goes to 3G) but you can tether with the free Wifi Tether or the paid PDANet.
I think (not sure) that PDANet requires a cable, but in my testing it's faster than Wifi Tether for 4G. Even if you get 10 MBit down on 4G, you will only get about 3-4 MBit when tethering. It's a known issue with Wifi Tether and the dev is working on it (last I checked; it may be resolved in the RC1).

Thanks for the response.
So even if I'm paying for the hotspot and using an odexed stock HTC ROM, it won't tether 4G? That's ridiculous.

Correct. It's bull****.
If you aren't using the hacked version of the sprint hot spot and you are paying for the tethering hot spot service than yes hot spot should give you 4g if it is available in your area. It is only the hacked version of hot spot that won't do 4g. If you pay for hot spot and its defaulting to 3g than either the rom you are using has the hack installed or your account isn't set up right, call sprint.
I'm picking up the Motorola Xoom Wifi when Sam's Club gets it this month (hopefully), and I'm playing around with my options for wifi tethering on my Evo. I'm running mikfroyo 4.5, and I feel that the hacked sprint hotspot offers the best battery life and internetspeeds, but it doesnt support 4g. Sometimes I'll be in an area where 4g speeds are in excess of 1 megabyte (yes byte) per second and want to take advantage of that. The wireless tether for root users seems to drain and heat up the battery quite a bit and it doesnt seem as fast as the sprint hotspot app. Short of paying sprint an extra 30 bucks a month (at which point I'd rather just activate the xoom under verizon) what do you recommend?
No preferance?
Unfortunately those are pretty much your only options. Easy Tether, Wireless Tether, or the hacked stock tether. There's no way around it, wifi tethering uses a lot of battery. Your phone is using both the 3g/4g radio and the wifi radio.
Now after using unrevoked does the hotspot work or do you have to flash a rom that has the hotspot hacked.
If you are rooted than you can just download wireless tether from the market.
Wireless tether is undoubtedly faster because it supports 4g. I found my phone only really gets too hot whem I download several gigs worth of data. Ive had my phone creep past the 140° f mark, at that point some internal safety thing kicked on and stopped the phone from charging. Phone survived without any notable longterm damage, but it was scary

Thanx for the info

If you stay on the stock rom, you will have to download Wireless Tether. The sprint hotspot only works for free with other custom roms.

It would help if you told us what method you are using to tether. Wireless Tether, stock tether, etc...
It seems to be wireless tether. Its broken for a lot of users on CM7 at this point; I'd recommend using the built in hotspot.
Hi, hoping someone here can help with this issue…
I have read through the Q&A and tried the fixes mentioned with only one working – the proxy server setting posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=966418
My problem is that prior to this rom, no fix was necessary – wifi tether on 4g was as fast as the speeds I was getting on the phone itself. Now I am lucky if I break 200 kBs /sec tethered (w/o the fix). And this fix only works for surfing and downloads via the browser. I still get the same crappy speeds if I am dl a torrent.
I am running MikG 3.11 – no mods, themes, or kernels. Just the plain rom. Using Amron recovery and wiped everything before install. No partition. I used to run Konis III, then the Konis IV and both worked fine with wifi tether (2.0.7) “out of the box”.
I’ve tried several different versions of wifi tether, ran the command to remove the routefix.sh , cleared the dalvik-cache, all with no luck. Have updated radio, prl, wimax, etc, and updated my profile. I read somewhere about unlocking wireless n, so I am about to give it a try, but hoping maybe someone here has an idea. I see most of the posts are older, so maybe there is something easy I am missing.
Tia for any help.

I never really had any luck with the tethering apps or unlocked sprint hotspot. They were all fairly slow for me. The only rom that had great tethering (built in) was CM7. For some reason, Sense roms never tethered well for me.
Yeah it turns the 4g radio off when you turn on the the Sprint hotspot use this

I use the Jan build so I haven't tried the new but they all have worked flawlessly on 4g

I don't use the hotspot, only wifi tether for 4g. i've tried many versions with no luck.
trukenx, are you on a sense rom? do you get full 4g speeds? i'm just a bit frustrated because it used to work on Konis (sense rom), and then not for mikg 3.11. I falshed back to konis and now that won't work properly either (meaning i won't get full 4g speeds while tethered - i can tether, just at way reduced speeds ).
i'll keep trying other builds of wifi tether. Evocm7, do you get full 4g speeds when tethered on cm7?
thanks again

I was never able to test tethering with 4g since Sprint scrapped WiMAX before they brought it to my area. However, 3g tethering was much faster with cm7's built in tethering than an app or unlocked hotspot on a sense Rom so I would assume the same would go for 4g. I do not have my EVO or Sprint anymore to test in an area with WiMAX. Just couldn't stand sprints internet anymore. Miss my EVO though

ad blocker maybe? i know it slows down 4g on the phone itself
great point with the adblocker, it could be limiting the data pass through on the tethering also i would wipe the data on the currect hotspot or back up and completely uninstall it also check the settings on other tethering app open garden was out and pretty much mirrored the free WiFi tether code... and lastly check the setting and firewall of the device you are using make sure that is also not blocking or limiting the network speeds of you tethering connections.. eg port blocking, bandwidth throttling, etc.

Thanks, but no luck. Odd that it used to work fine, then all of sudden not anymore. Well, using the proxy settings I can get good speeds via the browser. Any settings for utorrent to get the same speeds? I tried using the same settings posted for the proxy fix, but no dice...
thanks again.
Hello,
I was wondering if there are any advantages or disadvantages to using FoxFi over the built in tethering option for CyanogenMod 10. I love how easy the built in option is with CM10 but if it's more likely to be detected I'll keep with FoxFi. I've been using FoxFi for quite a while and just re-upped to CM10 today and am curious about this since the default ROM blocks WiFi tethering without a data plan through ATT.
Thanks!
