CyanogenMod Wi-fi hot spot question - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am running Cyanogen Mod 6 nightly builds. I am using the built in wifi tethering stuff. Does this cost anything extra or does it work the same way that Android Wifi tether does? Thanks!

it should just come out of your data plan.

Wireless tethering options

I'm picking up the Motorola Xoom Wifi when Sam's Club gets it this month (hopefully), and I'm playing around with my options for wifi tethering on my Evo. I'm running mikfroyo 4.5, and I feel that the hacked sprint hotspot offers the best battery life and internetspeeds, but it doesnt support 4g. Sometimes I'll be in an area where 4g speeds are in excess of 1 megabyte (yes byte) per second and want to take advantage of that. The wireless tether for root users seems to drain and heat up the battery quite a bit and it doesnt seem as fast as the sprint hotspot app. Short of paying sprint an extra 30 bucks a month (at which point I'd rather just activate the xoom under verizon) what do you recommend?
No preferance?
Unfortunately those are pretty much your only options. Easy Tether, Wireless Tether, or the hacked stock tether. There's no way around it, wifi tethering uses a lot of battery. Your phone is using both the 3g/4g radio and the wifi radio.
Now after using unrevoked does the hotspot work or do you have to flash a rom that has the hotspot hacked.
If you are rooted than you can just download wireless tether from the market.
Wireless tether is undoubtedly faster because it supports 4g. I found my phone only really gets too hot whem I download several gigs worth of data. Ive had my phone creep past the 140° f mark, at that point some internal safety thing kicked on and stopped the phone from charging. Phone survived without any notable longterm damage, but it was scary

Thanx for the info

If you stay on the stock rom, you will have to download Wireless Tether. The sprint hotspot only works for free with other custom roms.

It would help if you told us what method you are using to tether. Wireless Tether, stock tether, etc...
It seems to be wireless tether. Its broken for a lot of users on CM7 at this point; I'd recommend using the built in hotspot.

Clarity on hacked hotspots

So it seems that none of the tethering apps work on the ICS ROMs currently (at least not for me, the AD-hoc does not work), but the roms I use include hacked hotspot. Is this referring to the Sprint app that comes with the ROM by default? I have always used wifi tether apps because I an weary of activating that feature on my Sprint account and having to pay for it. If someone can clarify this for me then I would greatly appreciate it.
Wifi tether works fine for me on ICS. Make sure you choose Galaxy Nexus CDMA/LTE (toro) in the app settings.

if your rom includes hacked hotspot, I would take advantage of it. It basically is a work around the lock that Sprint has on it's hotspot feature. I would recommend that you use the hotspot hack so you can tether via 4G as opposed to using wifi tether with 3G speeds. It's all by preference though.
I am waiting for the tFD19_v0.1.0 odexed rom to get the hotspot hack so i can get back to my 4G speeds. But wifi tether is the best one so far for tether apps. Just make sure you change the Device-Profile to Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE) and keep everything else on auto

[Q] Cyanogenmod 10 built in wifi tethering vs FoxFi

Hello,
I was wondering if there are any advantages or disadvantages to using FoxFi over the built in tethering option for CyanogenMod 10. I love how easy the built in option is with CM10 but if it's more likely to be detected I'll keep with FoxFi. I've been using FoxFi for quite a while and just re-upped to CM10 today and am curious about this since the default ROM blocks WiFi tethering without a data plan through ATT.
Thanks!

wifi tether app jb 4.2.1

I was wondering if anyone knew of a wifi tether app that works with 4.2.1?? the built in wifi tether app does work for me all the time
Many roms have tether built in so no app needed. Not sure of any apps that work for 4.2.1

I'm on a Gnex lte with a verizon unlimited plan. I'm running CM 10.1. the rom's hotspot shows up to connect, can't connect with my laptop, can connect on the ipad but dns error and no internet. WiFi tether app, both from playstore and beta3 version doesn't seem to broadcast a signal recognizable by either my laptop or the ipad. I'm wondering if the app just isn't working right or if verizon is blocking my tethering.

Oh..ok
WiFi tether doesn't work on 4.2.1.

I have the the same problem. And my tablet connects to my phone no problem. So just because your laptop connects, doesn't mean the Xbox will, because mine won't. The problem is specifically with the Xbox not working all of a sudden when trying to tether using native or the tether app on 4.2.1. I hope somebody can find a solution soon because I love the new OS and really don't want to revert back.
i have spent two days trying to resolve my issue with wifi tether as well. i've tried 4..2.1 aokp (w/ stock kernel) and CM10.1. with both i've tried using wifi tether with my windows 7 laptop, to no avail. i have tried using open, wpa and wpa2. wifi tether does not work for me with any 4.2 roms. i finally gave up and went back to using my aokp build 5 where native wifi tether works normally.
**I found that Bluetooth tether works, but at an obvious sacrifice of bandwidth speed. wifi tether still does not work.
I'm on AOKP 4.2.1 for Galaxy S3, i747. Same thing, no wifi tethering.
"everyone" keeps saying it will work when there is no encryption, which yes.. others can connect to the network, however, they cannot run data/speedtest.
if you download the wifi tether app for root users ( WiFi Tether for Root Users
Müller, Lemons, Buxton )
it will have troubles starting and configuring AP.
I am having the exact same problem with mmuzzy image 4.2.1 on the Verizon Galaxy Nexus. I did find that svtp - lite tethering app works but 14.99 for the pro version no way.

Have you guys tried "Hotspot Toggle Widget" by Fattin? I have seen reports that it still works with 4.2.1, but can't confirm it myself since I am on 4.1.1 atm.
The app does not provide hotspot functionality per se. It is a widget to toggle the built-in hotspot on and off. It bypasses the annoying carrier check if you have tether plan or not (for those of us that are still enjoying grandfathered unlimited data).
The app also does not require root.

wifi tether (native) now works on my phone after 4.2.1 aokp build 1 and build 2 did not work. again aokp 4.2.1 mr1 build 3 has a working wifi tether.
I too have had problems with numerous roms and tether. Just today I installed AOSPA 3.0 on my toro and guess what?
NO WIFI TETHER. Everything else was awesome but I have to have tethering when I'm at home.
So, I roll back to my trusty old CM 10.1 01/02/13 nightly build that runs great and has WORKING wifi tether. Good luck.

I know this doesn't help the OP but I just have to THANK YOU for this suggestion. The " Hotspot Toggle Widget" by Fattin along with Foxfi and PDANet works wonderfully on my Verizon Gnex stock unrooted. So, I know its only 4.1.1. We'll see if we ever get 4.2, but in the meantime, this is way better than only being able to connect my Nexus 7 with Bluetooth because of the carrier check.

Tethering on CM/AOSP vs Sense roms

Has anyone ever noticed a difference in tethering performance of CM or Sense ROMs. On some cm ROMs my tethering connection from phone to laptop seems to fly. However, on some other cm ROMs the tethering seems to lag. I haven't been on a sense ROM in ages. I live in a place that only offers satellite internet, so I tether my high speed data from my phone to watch Netflix. I'm on an unlimited cricket data plan.
