I have the Oxygen OS version 3.1.2 and rooted with TWRP recovery. So what should I do to let the new OTA 3.2.1 install successfully without any issues like brick or bootloop? All I want is to make possible the installation of the OTA update the conventional way (By downloading and installing it through Software Update in Settings) and not by manual flashing of any ROM from TWRP as I do not prefer contaminating my device from outer sources. I already have a personal STOCK Nandroid backup of 3.1.2. Suggestions are welcome.

You need a non-modfied stock system and stock recovery and then flash it via adb sideload in recovery.

You have made a adb backup? If so try to restore it and if its full stock the OTA should be flashed without issues.

Yes, I took a Nandroid backup before rooting. But will the TWRP hinder the update process or something? Because I read it in some threads here. Do I need to remove TWRP so that stock recovery gets detected easily without issues? Also, does the OEM needs locking again? Thank You for the advice.

Yup, you definately need the stock recovery and no you don`t need to lock the bootloader to flash stock firmware.

Any links on how to remove TWRP?
Why the hassle and not just flashing the whole 3.2.1 rom using TWRP??
I don't understand, way more simple to download the whole 3.2.1 stock Rom and flash it with twrp.
There are links to whole Rom. Once downloaded it take a few minutes to flash, you flash super su and you're good.

True, but i presumed OP wanted to go all stock without root.
Then he just omits the super su flash.

Agreed with others in here about simply flashing full rom and done with it. Also before rooting your phone in the future OP realize there will be updates and try to research what may have to be done Google and xda are a great place to start with threads instructing on updates of this nature. I was under the impression systemless root (the only root currently available for 6.0) would allow OTAs?
I flashed stock recovery and went ahead and attempted to install the OTA. It begins installing then fails. My system should theoretically be untouched.

I would like to have the OTA update instead of any 3.2.1 out there. I don't want to contaminate my OP3 (Also because that's my new phone after 4 years. Imagine how caring a guy could be after upgrading from a Galaxy Y to a OP3).

But I think the stock recovery is already present there, all I need is to flash my stock (no-root) 3.1.2 and remove TWRP, is there any way to remove TWRP? If you think this is the right way to go...
I was on 3.1.2, unlocked and rooted. Downloaded this full rom and flashed via twrp. And I'm on 3.2.1 now. You'll lose root access though, so just flash supersu. Here is the link.

Flash stock recovery. That will do, you don't need to remove twrp separately. Stock will replace it.
Why do you guys have to do all that I am sure there is a rooted version of 3.2.1 that can be flashed via TWRP and that's that.
Also there is no update zip that can be side loaded? I mean I am running stock but there is usually one in the forums.

If your bootloader is unlocked then it's easy... you just flash SuperSU in recovery after the update. No ROMs to deal with. On a Nexus device with an unlocked bootloader root is never an issue.

Not with stock recovery. But if you have an unlocked bootloader it's still no problem. You can boot to a custom recovery without even having to actually flash it if you want to keep stock recovery. So you just let the OTA install as normal then use fastboot to boot CWM or TWRP and flash SuperSU and you're done and rooted.
If your bootloader is unlocked, you might as well take advantage of it even if you want to remain mostly stock
Just keep in mind that SuperSU runs a daemon all the time can result in 70% cpu usage peaks. Don't blame 4.3 for it.

Why even bother with this crap, flash the update, boot, flash custom recovery after and flash new SuperSU. You would be done before even typing this post.
I used the Nexus Root Toolkit by WugFresh to root my Galaxy Nexus on 4.3, and didn't lose any data...
All I did as usual was:-
1) Flash the update
2) Boot into TeamWin recovery (I keep the stock recovery installed)
3) Flash SuperSU 1.43
Simple, no issues.
If I have CMW Touch recovery can I install the OTA? I have received the notification but I don't know if I will be able to install it. Is there any way to revert back to Google's recovery just like installing a custom recovery? I mean not loosing data or having to so a factory reset.

How do you boot into twrp without flashing it? I know "fastboot flash recovery twrp.img" permanently overrides the built in recovery, but how would you boot into it just once?

FWIW: Even though I've successfully used this kit a dozen times on four different devices, root was not working correctly (no su binary found) for me so I had to load the app via twrp which did correctly load from the toolkit after the kit installed 4.3.

I got the OTA update notification today, but I couldn't install because of CWM.
I modified the zip to remove the recovery check, but it's the first one I've ever done, so I'm not sure if it will work. Either way, you'll probably have to reflash CWM if it does work.
As always, I'm not responsible for anything that goes wrong with your phone. Whether it blows up, catches fire, or just bricks....not my fault.
Anways, here are both the OG and the modified versions of the OTA update.
UPDATE: I just flashed the modified zip and it installed fine. Got rid of that annoying notification and I still kept root by choosing to fix root after flashing it.

So some might remember me awhile back ago... https://forum.xda-developers.com/pixel-xl/help/unlocking-verizon-bootloader-t3557290
I got tired of not having a unlocked/rooted device since I just dropped so much money on a new phone for my 27th bday sooo I took it back to verizon and swapped it for a new one. I was having the battery problems where my phone would hit 30-15% and just die on me OR the screen would die on me but the phone stayed on no problems.. I'd be in a phone call and the screen would shut off and I couldnt get it to turn back on without plugging in a charger or battery bank.
I've got my new phone now and everything is working flawlessly.. It's unlocked, has twrp installed and rooted just fine..
Now I remember seeing something about once I unlock/root the device my OTA becomes disabled so where do I get the OTA update for the device so I can go to 7.1.1 or later this month 7.1.2? I found this https://developers.google.com/android/ota and I see the 7.1.1 update but it's 800mbs which means I'm guessing if I flash that i'd be completely reinstalling a new copy of android and lose all of my data and have to go through setting up my phone again etc..
How do I just get the update itself and flash that? When I use the OTA on my Pixel XL the download is only like 200MB it doesn't install though just says it failed. Still new to all of this but I'm learning and how else am I gonna learn if I don't ask questions
a point in the right direction would be great.

You are unlocked, so the only danger here is that you bootloop and lose your data. Make sure your data is backed up and sideload the ota with the directions on googles ota page and re install TWRP.
That's the easiest way and pretty darn safe. I dont recall seeing anyone having trouble with that.
Looking at unrooting my device so I can do OTA updates via the phone and then I'll just reroot again but during the unroot process it says
Attempt to restore stock boot image? This is require for OTA's to succeed. If you manually decrypted your device, note that this might prevent my device from booting.
How do I know if I manually decrypted it? I used depixel8 to unlock bootloader and used SuperSU to root so am I safe to proceed or should I not attempt to restore a stock boot image?

If you ever bootloop don't freak, its an unlocked google phone. Flashing back to stock is easy.
The only thing that was in question was the bootloader unlock, once its unlocked your safe. It wont relock unless you lock it. But, if you do lock it, its locked for good. Afaika

I flashed OTA with twrp on my buddy's pixel for the Feb update worked just fine. Just make sure it's the OTA and not the factory image. But the best way would be using fastboot
Most anything you flash (stock updates, custom roms, will overwrite recovery. But not a problem, you just re-boot it to flash it, or just boot it and flash su and reboot device.

Hello ,

I would like to root this one to have adblocker...
First question : How could root this?
Second question: If my phone is rooted, is it possible to have update OTA (or like samsung, impossible after)?
Thank you;
If you replace the stock recovery with a custom recovery, like TWRP, OTAs will not work. However, if retain the stock recovery and simply boot TWRP in fastboot mode, you will be able to root your stock phone and receive OTAs. Just use the ADB command <fastboot boot twro_xxx.img> or simply flash back to a stock recovery image every time an OTA comes in.

No. You should NEVER take an OTA if you have root. You can dirty flash the full update zip in TWRP when they're released though.

Let me clarify: OTA stands for Over-The-Air and implies that you're going to download the partial update from OnePlus and install it in stock recovery. Do NOT do this.
OnePlus usually publishes full zips of their updates when the OTA is released. Currently a mirror for them exists in the guides section. You can flash those (>1 GB) safely in TWRP to update OOS.

Jim your answer wasn't Chinese to me and made perfect sense thank you. I have a doubt, if I just use "fastboot boot *TWRP*.IMG" and root and flash exposed too, will I be able to receive otas and update offically and redo boot TWRP and root and flash exposed again without problems?

Here is the reality. YES. You can still receive OTAs with root, However, the OTA will break the root and you will need to reroot your device. Those who are saying no are wrong. It is very simple. To process an OTA, your phone needs stock recovery. TWRP will not process an OTA. So if you have stock recovery in your recovery partition and you reboot your phone into fastboot mode and from your PC, run the ADB command, <fastboot boot twrp_xxx.img>, you will boot up the TWRP image and will be able to run it as one normally would, but you will still have stock recovery loaded in the recovery partition.[QRCODE][/QRCODE]

What's the difference? You still need to reroot.

I apologize if I'm out of the loop. When I first read about OTAs with root I was on a Samsung device and everyone said that it would either brick the phone or upgrade the OS with no way to re-root the device. Looking through your answer it's obvious that that fear probably only applies to Samsung devices. Thanks for correcting me on this.

Thanks Jim , I can confirm this works without problems on op5t. I had TWRP flashed and rooted with xposed installed.
I clean flashed the 4.7.1 stock ROM and got stock recovery and fresh os.
Just booted to TWRP using fastboot boot and rooted / installed xposed.
I got OTA updated to 4.7.2 and rerooted using fastboot boot TWRP and now rooted with xposed on stock ROM and stock recovery. ?
I have a question :
I would like to root without lost everything.
Is it possible? if yes , how?

Exactly like I said. Rooting, by itself, does not wipe your storage. The only time your storage is wiped is when you unlock your (bootloader) phone, when you manually choose to wipe storage in TWRP or when you do a factory reset. If you do not have an unlocked bootlader, you must make a backup of your files first, as once you unlock it does a factory reset. You can then run TWRP and restore your files. You are now rooted with your files and ability to take OTAs. There are plenty of tutorials here on XDA describing the process step by step. May I suggest you do a search first. You are very likely to get all the answers to these questions as they have been asked many, many times.
Thank you.
so my question is FOR ROOTING, i HAVE TO UNLOCK BOOTLOADER?
And how Back up my data, my apps, all my settings without root or TWRP?

Look through the Magisk forum. They have a method of rooting that doesn't require a custom recovery.
I use helium backup for my non-root app backup needs. Settings are trickier and I typically do them over every time. Super backup & restore is good for call logs, texts, and contacts.

Did you read my post? The answers are all there. SEARCH! This question has been asked several times a day. You need to back up your data to another site, such as cloud, other device or PC. Then unlock bootloader, run TWRP and root file, then restore data. Tutorials are online. Now SEARCH!

Man seriously! You got your answers and still you keep asking. Makes me wonder if you are just trolling
Non-trolling question - I am experienced when it comes to flashing/rooting. So if I want to stay with TWRP, I have to sacrifice OTA's, but it will be possible to flash the new updated zips and still keep my data via dirty flashing? Any negatives to doing this?

Yes, as far as I know, if on stock OOS, you download the full zip (over 1GB in size), flash that in TWRP, and then flash root solution right after (before leaving TWRP) to prevent it being overwritten by the stock recovery.
I don't think dirty flashing has any downsides, but if you do end up running into issues, a clean flash usually solves them
Hey, so I installed twrp and root aswell, and i've done what i wanted and now I feel confortable with unnistalling root and twrp. I have already unnistaled the root and want to unnistal twrp t be able to install OTA updates, considering that oreo is out on Motorola phones. Can anyone help? I also am kind of a newbie on android costumization btw.

Flash only recovery.img from stock ROM using command code: fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
it will not work, your mobile will do a bootloop, you have to reflash the complete firmware.

It should work if
you have disabled dm-verity
This can be done either with a zip file which disables it or by flashing magisk
but obviously you will not be able to flash any ota - you will need to flash stock firmware and it is recommended to lock the bootloader just to make sure everything is back to stock
