No you can't. Why would you if I may ask? I did it with my M8 back in the days as well. Then I had to send it back for repair, and they you asked if the software was modified. I just told them that everything was reverted to stock and they didn't make an issue out of it. Hope this helps, anwser your question.

Sorry but this isn't correct. You can't unlock it by flashing a Ruu. I you need to buy unlock code or use a xtc clip at present.

I had my Wildfire unlocked using revolutionary method... Previously I was locked to Orange UK.. I just flashed the RUU (Asia India) from shipped roms first; then I used the revolutionary tool - AlphaRevX.... Only issue I had was no mobile network.. I flashed the latest radio img for wildfire using fastboot... I never bought or used an unlock code from anyone...

Are you sure it was locked in the first place?
The cid is hidden away in a partition we can't get to, I don't think revolutionary changes the cid because if it did the alpharev team would know about it and it would have been mentioned before, an ruu flashes original software which is also most probably locked as the carriers would complain to google for making such a simple way to unlock there phones.

Yup I'm damn sure Myhtc was locked... I tried using other operator's sim cards..

[Q] A question regarding rooting.

If I was to root my phone with s-on using htcdev, would I then be able to switch to s-off when it is released and have my warranty back? Thanks.

from reading from other threads if you do unlock from htcdev unfortunately even if you do switch to s-off you already have unlocked through htcdev and i think they keep your imei or something like that if i can remember..
so basically you unlock and they know who has done it through the site.

Most probably not.. I don't think its even possible to relock it properly after unlocking with htcdev, if you try it'll say 'relocked' in fast boot not 'locked'

Nope unfortunately not.
don't think so. It is the easiest way and also the official way.
But it can void your warranty (not if you are a developper apparently xD)

No.
But you can install a custom ROM or root the phone without unlocking the bootloader if you can turn off the security check placed on the NAND storage (i.e S-ON). So far devs have not been able to turn off security (i.e S-OFF) on One X, but it will happen eventually. Till then you’ll have to unlock and potentially void your warranty to root or install a custom ROM.
I've rooted all my previous phones but this time I'm waiting for soff.
Am I right in thinking that when soff is released you can unlock your bootloader without htc dev?

With S-Off you don't need to unlock the bootloader to root or install custom ROMs. That is one of the advantages, no bootloader unlock = no warranty issues. I waited for over a month monitoring S-Off development, but it wasn't really going anywhere. Tired of waiting, I just went ahead and unlocked the bootloader.
It took over a year for some HTC devices (i.e Desire) to gain S-Off, so you never know how long it'll take. But hopefully it'll happen soon...

Getting S-OFF is equivalent to unlocking the bootloader.

Locked is S-On if I'm not mistaken. Unlocked is S-Off.

I get your uneasiness, but in the simplest terms, if the bootloader is S-ON and not HTCDev unlocked, it is locked.
You can unlock the bootloader from the HTCDev website, but there are caveats for flashing custom ROMs, namely that the boot.img file needs to be extracted from the ROM and flashed separately using fastboot.
The easier approach is to use the methods outlined to gain S-OFF. This gives you more control not only to flash custom ROMs, but also unsigned radios.
I tried it both ways (HTCDev and S-OFF). I'm much happier being S-OFF.

you can download and install with unlocked bootloader and s-off as long as you have a unmodified system and stock recovery
