I was recently out of the country so I disabled cellular data and data roaming on my 5X phone. When my T-Mobile bill came, I had data connection charges several times each day. I called T-Mobile and they said they were all application updates. How can my phone connect to mobile data when I turned it off? I've seen posts about the same issue but never saw a solution. If anyone has figured out how to fix this please let me know. Otherwise I'L just get rid of this phone,
There was a similar issue they had on Project Fi, but I don't know if it is related to your issue.

I think mine is a little different. I dont see LTE on at all so it looks like data is really turned off. I have been on wifi almost all the time and yet every single dAy has a data connection charge. I am back in the US so I dont know how to check if the phone still has an issue.

It started yesterday and I don't know why. Go to check my weather, hit update and after about 10 seconds I get a bubble telling me that an unknown connection error ocurred and to try again later. I can make phone calls, send and receive texts, but can't check my weather. If I soft reset it works fine. Today, go to check my weather again and same problem. Been making phone calls and texting all morning without issue. Soft reset and again it works fine. Obviously, something is going wrong with my data connection over time, but what could cause it to just shut down completely requiring a soft reset to fix?
More weirdness. I tried manually turning on my data connection in the Connection Manager and as quickly as I turn it on it turns itself off. WTF! I haven't done/added anything to the phone in a week. Is this something on AT$T's end, could they be blocking me from using data for some reason?
About 2 weeks ago I did some regedit to have the data connection turn off automatically after 5 mins of non-use. It was working fine after that and anytime it needed a data connection it would make it. I don't remember where the setting was to change it back, but I doubt this is the problem because this issue just started yesterday.
I'm on AT&T also, on the new leaked ROM, and I have exactly the same issue. It started about 2-3 weeks ago, and I noticed the connection drops overnight (during the day I have no problems), and it'll only come back after restart or reset. I think it's AT&T's network...

Maybe they work on improving their towers and network lol
T-Mobile does that also.
i get a Could not coonect bubble, and have to manualy enable my data conection. If you guys are Tethering our providers automaticly drop our priority level...Unlimited my ass, they tried to cap me at Edge speed and all i had to do was disable/enable the data conection to blast 3g...
I found the problem, but I still don't know what caused it. I'm leaning towards something done on AT$T's end. I have always had my phone configured to use the AT$T ISP in network properties. Apparently, it no longer likes this setting. Switched back to MediaNet and all is working just fine. Problem is that when I first got the phone I did speed tests using both settings and AT$T ISP was faster, so that's why I set it that way. I can't test it now because it won't stay connected with that setting. Can AT$T block users from a particular connection? I don't tether and the most data I've ever used was 280mb last month. Hardly a reason to block me.
I'm not thethering either, my usage is roughly 600 MB/mo and my network is already set to MediaNet. This problem started recently, didn't have it before.
Looks like it is something going on with AT$T. A number of my friends from different states have reported issues over the past 2 weeks with several having severe connection issues the past few days. These are people on varying devices including iPhones, Blackberrys and smartphones. I hope it is due to AT$T finally upgrading their network and not overload from all the new iPhone users and abusive tetherers.
I replaced my galaxy s 2 because it was acting up and now i have rooted one and also put stock rom bloat free and i recently noticed that sometimes my phone have hard time connecting to data. i can see the uplink sign go green but the downlink arrow doesnt blink and phone keeps me waiting waiting and waiting and i have to restart the phone or leave it for good 5 or 10 minutes to be able to start working. can anyone please tell me if thats a hardware issue or the software? do i need to have my phone replaced?, i dont know if tmobile store would exchange phone now because i purchased phone on 12th and its been 12 days if the reffer me to customer service then they will send me a refurbished phone which i do not want because i paid full price for phone.
any help will be appreciated.
Data connection problem
If you haven't already tried, go to Settings/Wireless and network/Mobile networks/Access Point Names and if there is an option to reset, select it. I had a similar problem with data connections - up and down lights blinked but no connection - and T-mobile support helped me out. Also, make sure Use packet data and Data roaming are checked.

I've had the problem too, both on 4G and WiFi. There is a warning on the data roaming option about incurring extra charges. Is this true? I know that my plan says free domestic roaming, but I'm not sure that applies to data?
The T-mobile rep allowed that this was confusing. They stated that there are no additional charges within the US. Roaming is required because TM uses other providers' (i.e. Verizon) towers in some locations.
I have this same problem, Im wondering if the update coming out next month for wi-fi calling will address this, or what about using the new sim card??? Its pretty annoying but i didnt want to really exchange my phone b/c this is the only problem im having as well as the vertical lines which i have pretty much learned to live with.

i am using the new sim card already... i dont know if the problem is with new sim card or the phone itself but it gets annoying sometimes when i need internet and it doesnt wanna work.
Has anyone had any luck fixing this?
I noticed this problem sometime after rooting and flashing roms. Now I'm on the stock rom released in the dev channel. I've talked with customer servie for an hour and none of their solutions fixed anything for me.
I don't have a good backup - is there anything I can do?
I haven't been bitten by this again. It has been a couple days and I've since replaced my phone (today). But I haven't been on 4G much. Wifi has been working fine for the last couple days.
This has been a frustrating issue I've been having pretty much since starting up my T-mobile service about a month ago.
To start off, my G3 is unrooted and on the latest stock software version, 20e.
I use Wifi calling often because I get 0-1 bars of reception at work. All seems to work well until I go outside and try to make a phonecall over the voice network. I'll have plenty of signal bars, be connected to 4G even, yet when I try to use the phone dialer to make a call it will say "Not connected to Mobile Network." or something along those lines.
I haven't done extensive testing, but I believe the other day I toggled the "Mobile Data" off then back on and was able to make calls.
Has anyone else had this trouble? Is it something possibly to do with Wifi and/or Wifi calling?
I believe I could make a phonecall using Hangouts when I was off of wifi, which tells me that the data part is working, but not the voice network.
I contacted T-mobile support, but they just had me do the "typical" things, like shut down the phone, remove the battery/SIM, start everything back up. And sure enough, it worked after that, but I'd rather not have to restart my phone or toggle stuff to get it to work as it should without any hassle.
Thanks!
My wife has the same problem after the 20E update. Her mobile is stock as well. It did not happen on 20B.

Off the top of my head no. I'll dig around a bit and see what if anything I come up with.,
From the digging I did I can't seem to find any help. The only thing I can think of is to factory reset it thing and see if it helps. I am going to do do it on my wifes phone tonight.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking too... I'm not really in the mood to deal with restoring all of my apps and whatnot, so I'll hold off on the factory reset for now.
If you remember, could you let me know the results? If I know for fair certainty that a wipe will fix the issue, I might do it.
Thanks!
It's a network problem and it is worst on Samsung phones. I recently went and got a new sim card and it seems to have fixed it. I read it is because if you live in a area where there is poor coverage it causes your sim to where out fast.

This started happening before my first month of T-mobile service was even up with a brand new SIM. I'm not saying that it's definitely not a SIM issue, just would seem unlikely that it's worn out that fast.
Mobile out of Network-Tmobile - Android
I;m having the same issue, turned phone off and on, checked Network connections everything looks fine, but now able to receive and send texts or make calls.

Hello,
I live in an area (like many of us) there T-mobile service isn't that great. I daily drive through areas with zero service and I have almost no service at my house so we utilize WIFI Calling.
I have been finding for the past few months that when I return to an area of good service (phone showing full bars of 4G or 4G LTE) that I cannot move any cellular data. If I reboot the phone then everything works again for a while. I have tried to toggle into airplane mode and back but this does not help, only a full reboot helps.
Does anyone else get this? Its very annoying to have to reboot the phone when I need to use cellular data. Appreciate some input. Phone is NOT rooted and running the latest available software from T-mobile

It happens all the time for me. I've not been able to figure out why it happens, but I've seen some speculation in other threads where people think it can break when switching between H+, 4G, LTE, etc. Some people have reported that switching to airplane mode and back fixes it, but it doesn't work for me. Only a reboot will fix it for me.
Here is another thread with some discussion on it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6-edge/help/mobile-network-data-connection-drops-t3097605
Thanks for the response. I'm not happy to hear it appears to be happening to everyone. I wonder if any of the carriers have reported this to Samsung?
I cleared the cache partition on my phone 2 days ago and I've been good since...that doesn't mean it fixed it but its been a while since I had 2 good days!
THIS HAPPENS TO ME OMG!!! I thought I was going crazy... it happens quite often in NYC where we travel by subway underground... Switching to Airplane mode then back indeed fix it majority of the time, but it doesn't work sometimes...
Also, this happens when i am on Wifi for extended period of time, and then leave WiFi, the phone will show 4G LTE but wont' push any data.
Going into Phone status will show that you have no IP Address...
edit: btw, i've done an exchange with Tmobile, and still happens on the phone, Swapped SIM card as well, doesn't solve the problem. T-Mobile ran diagnosis, and found nothing wrong. I suspect it might be T-Mobile's network configuration...
Also, I can almost 100% reproduce this when I am playing a game that requires periodic connection (like loading acount info), and then playing in the subway while doing data connection between subway station (we have internet at the station, but not in the tunnel) will break my 4G LTE data connection...
On Project Fi and I've noticed that my LTE / Mobile Data goes "!" often, usually when I move from Wifi to Mobile Data I'll notice it, so I'm not sure when exactly it's happening. Simply toggling data off and on again has resolved it instantly.
I've run into some issues with Wifi as well on my work network doing the same thing, although my home network seems fine. Toggling wifi on and off seems to fix this as well.
Just super annoying and honestly an issue if it's happening when I have no network and can't receive texts or something because of it... (Haven't actually checked if it effects texts etc. I'll check next time it happens and report back)
Same issue here. I think I'm returning the phone.
For me, I have to turn off mobile and turn it back on.
Please let us know. I am on project Fi and I am worried about compatibility.
I already know going into it that I am losing my network switching capabilities in addition to losing the Google VPN function and autoconnecting to Google partnered secure wireless networks.
However, with the bull**** Google pulling trying to give me $260 for my pixel 3XL, which is less than a year old, I refuse to buy another pixel device until they get their **** together.
I have checked tons of boards and I don't see anything about OnePlus 7t users and Project Fi. Just speculation.
Thanks in advance!

I am on Google Fi and noticed the same issue. The problem is worse when there is week wifi signal and the phone switches from wifi to cellular. Sometime I want to wait until the ! disappear, but it just stay like that until I toggle the cellular or airplane mode
Same here. Doesn't always switch from WiFi to LTE when I leave the house.
