Back button not saving state - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Hello, just got my new 10 coming from the m8!!
Did anyone notice that the back button doesn't take you back to the position you were? For example if you go to people and press on a contact. When you press back again, it takes you to the top of the list. This wasnt the case with my m8 running MM.
Any thoughts?

I disagree.
I opened People, I tapped on a contact's photo, it rendered the contact preview pop-up, I tapped on card icon in the upper right corner and the full contact card is opened, I scrolled up and down then tapped back button, and I'm taken back to the contacts list at the same position (level) where I was... What's wrong?
P.S. Please note that I do not keep any contacts in Google Account but all of them are stored locally, and being backed thru VCF backup file (if this matters). ??

Well its not just the people app. If i go to settings and press on any option, then press back, it takes me to the top of the settings menu

Just checked Settings either. No probs. Same behavior - after hitting BACK, whilst inside some sub menu, took me back to the list (in the middle, not to the top of list)..

Ok i managed to fix this. I turned off animation under developer settings.
One other thing, if you have wifi, mobile data, or bluetooth turned on, and you go into settings, do you notice that the slider buttons are instantly turning on? Like they were off and when you press settings, they turn on?

Lost virtual buttons

I've had the phone for two days now and this has happened 3 times now.
The worst one was I got a phone call but the keyboard was up and the back button wasn't there to get rid of it. So I couldn't answer the phone.
One time I couldn't exit the settings menu because the buttons disappeared.
To remedy I turn off the display, turn it back on and unlock to the camera. I think because the camera has the special hidden buttons it causes the phone to refresh the button display otherwise I couldn't find another way to do it.
Has this happened to others? I haven't seen threads about it.

I lost them once but got them back by turning the phone sideways and then back upright once the buttons reappeared.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Oh wow, yea, that would probably work too. But some apps lock to portrait (dialer).

Happened to me while I was playing a game (Reckless Gateway) and received a call at the same time. After the call, soft buttons wouldn't appear anymore, had to restart my phone
I have only lost the buttons when flashing a mod that was not compatible...in that situation I did not have the virtual buttons or the notification bar at all.
Never happened to me on stock or rom. What build/android is your phone? You can find info in settings>about phone

This has happened to me a couple times while using Google Nav. I just pulled down the notification bar and hit the settings button - that seemed to bring the buttons back. Strange issue.
Just a few kinks that need ironing out.. hopefully Google is aware of minor bugs like this already

Yep, exactly. Though I wouldn't call this minor because it made me miss a call.
Another thing I just noticed. Go into an app that has the menu virtual button (the three dots) then turn off the screen. Turn it back on and the menu button will be the only virtual button on the Lock Screen. You can press it and automatically unlock the phone. I'm using slide to unlock and the news and weather app to do this every time.
Edit: Just tried with a different lock (pattern) and the menu button will not unlock. But it is still there and you can press it. It just does nothing. Weird.

[Solved] Can't Exit Google Navigation?

Without a menu button on the device, how can you exit Google Navigation. The menu doesn't pop up? Unless I finish a route, how can I exit?
Hit the three lines in the bottom right of the screen. Good to see Google can't even follow their own guidelines

You can hit the back button on the phone and then a box will pop up asking if you want to exit.

The first time, when I had this problem, the back button just kept going back through the navigation menus, but not ending navigation. I ended up killing the app. Now when I try it, this works. Thanks!

MA7 Issues?

Alright, so I updated to MA7 update, and everytime I'm in the text messaging app, and screen timesout I hit the home button and instead of turning on the screen and showing me my messaging app, it would turn screen on and show my last message and then get me the task manager screen.
Any one else have issues like that, does seem to happen when I'm not in the messaging app.
Ninja edit, ok so now it seems like everytime I use the home button it gives me the task manager ugh.
no issues here running smooth so far

Well did a hard reset it seem to went away.
So before if i let the screen timeout and i press the home button it would turn on the screen and the last viewed window. Now if I let it time out it just goes back to the lock screen, so wondering if this is a setting, or a glitch from before. Kind of nice to now have to swipe to unlock all the time.
Now its back againan this is annoying.

I just updated and I dont seem to have any problems with this rom other than battery so far. Dropped 30% in an hour..
Someone try it see if it does it to you or not, I have my screen set to timeout after 30sec and smart stay and smart rotation is on.
So open like text messages, wait till the screen timesout and immediatly push the home button, this for me bypasses the swipe to unlock screen and brings up the task manager/app switcher. If I wait more than a few seconds and then hit the home button it turns the phone on to the swipe to unlock screen.
If anyone test it that would be cool.

The only issue I have found is with my S-Notes. I had one completely dissappear and a few others somehow became locked and I don't know what the password is so I can't view or delete them.

If I hit the wake button right after it times out it goes straight to the app I was in. I like it. I hate the gallery though, it's laggy and freezes almost immediately.

Hit home key about 3 seconds or so after screen off ot takes me to my last open app.
After about 5 to 10 seconds it locks.

My thoughts exactly. I might try restoring to my ma5 and trying to redo it from a fresh download and see if that changes anything.

[Q] HTC One M8 locked up

This happened to me today at work...I had just picked up my phone and was going to start Chrome to do some browsing. I accidentally hit the Camera shortcut and my screen went blank and 3 camera icons displayed. Pressing any of the camera buttons got me nowhere. Pressing and holding down the power button did nothing. I had 96%+ power remaining so I know it was not a low battery. After a minute even the camera buttons disappeared and the screen was completely blank, no status lights either. I plugged in the power cable, pressed the power button...still nothing. So I put the phone down and let sit there for 5 minutes. I eventually heard the T-Mobile jingle and the phone rebooted itself.
My phone is stock and I have not done anything exotic to it. Anyone come across this issue or know of a way to prevent/fix it?
That sounds very bizarre to me. Might want to check out any apps hogging resources.

I put a memory tool on the phone so I'll see what it shows if my phone locks up again. I do have SnoopWall and a call blocker installed so maybe I have an issue there.

How are you actually meant to turn this off?

Did anyone at HTC actually use this device? The power button is an absolute joke. 50% of the time I wind up messing with the volume on my way to turn the phone off and put it back in my pocket.
How do you guys sleep this thing? The nexus 5 buttons are so much better.

i think he is talking about the power button location?
anyway, there are many different ways to turn of the screen.(root needed)
1.swipe2sleep
2.notification double tap on viper rom
3. OR u can just customize a button on ur NAV bar to turn off the phone

First I have a nexus5 also and there is no comparison on the buttons. They rattle when you shake it. Anyways maybe you have a bad device. I just set mine to hold home to turn screen off so I never even have to hit the button but my button works fine if I need it.

Indeed. I'm contemplating a return and sticking with either my moto x or nexus 5 so k won't be rooting it at the moment.
Its bizarre that they added motion gestures basically acknowledging the button isn't great, is there no off gesture?

I will look into this. Seems odd HTC has an "on" method (acknowledging they need one in addition to the sleep button) but not an off button.

This is how mine works too.
--- OP, I used to do the same thing with my m7. After a couple weeks of use I stopped doing it.

Except sometimes, I long press the power button, then I get a short vibration & several options regarding resetting or powering down my phone. Thanks for confirming the presence of the other features tho! I am glad to see that the power button functions to start the device, as well as turn the display on & off. I am certainly happy to discover that the power buttons function didn't change just because HTC located it somewhere other than where LG located it!
Seriously, I also have a N5 (with ZERO button issues, rock solid), but I much prefer the HTC button placement. No accidentally turning the device off while just trying to adjust the volume with only a left hand available at the time.

Yeah, I actually prefer the button being in the top. I never really liked the power button on the side.
My hands aren't big either, if anything they're smaller than an average guy.
It just takes a small shift to turn it off with one hand, just being careful you don't press the volume buttons. Which became easy after a couple days of use for me.
