This summer, I bought this phone but sold it after a week because it had a ton of problems, including overheating. Today, I bought the phone again, because I wanted to give it another chance. Right now, in the middle of winter with less than 20C in my room, I was playing Temple Run when I started noticing the phone was getting warmer. I thought "well, this is normal, I have been playing a 3D game for about 20 minutes, I bet it hasn't overheated like it happened this summer, that one was probably defective too, it's just getting a bit warm, that's all", but guess what? I quitted temple run, ran a Quadrant session, and yeah, it had overheated and reduced its performance like it happened last time. Halved performance due to overheating, exactly like it happened this summer, 3000 points instead of the usual 6000+ it gets.

I guess it's my fault though, fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me.
This phone is such a piece of crap it gave me the most buyer's remorse I've ever had.
6000 points on Quadrant? The max I got was around 3400...
Anyway, I think it is normal to a device to overheat and lose performance when it gets hotter. Same for too cold (under 0ºC). The colder, the better the performance. That's why all eletronics should be kept cool.
I could have excused it for overheating during summer with 35C room temperature, but with less than 20C and after just less than one hour?
How is this acceptable? Seriously, what is wrong with this phone?
I am raging uncontrollably right now. I can't believe I was so stupid to get this turdphone TWICE before realizing it was indeed a massive stinking turd.
And yeah, it's not 6000 points but 3500, when it overheats it gets much less, and I notice it's happening even before the score gets displayed, because usually the planet thingy runs at 60FPS but when it's overheated it runs at around 40.
GOD DAMN.
Oh and by the way, if it overheats during gameplay, it also overheats during web browsing or EVERYTHING really. And EVERY SINGLE XPERIA S IN EXISTENCE has this problem. Yours too.
You better not use it too much, or it might overheat and start running slower than a X10. What, you bought your phone to use it? LOLZ.

definitely rom/kernel problem.. what's rom u use? have u update it to latest .55? u unlock the bootloader? u just b*tching without give any details.
the colder the hardware is not the better the performance, there's something called operating temp. usually u cant use the hardware if it's not in its operating temp (like PC processer, it cant boot when 0 degree Celsius, but booting fine at 30 degrees or -27 (subzero) degrees). if u get lower performance, usually it's because the driver/applications that order the processor to lower itself.
when i was using custom stock rom, i've played Nova 3 with my friends (wifi) for around 45 minutes, and it hasnt got lags, sure the phone was very hot, but the performance wasnt drop. now im using cm10, still got no lags when playing games (Trial Xtreme 3 is very fun & challenging and surely a phone heater, ive spent bout 2 hours playing, got low battery, charging it (thx for the fast charging) for 1 hour and half, then playing it again.. still got no lags )
so, surely the problems is in the rom.. since ur in xda, try fix it urself... if u wont, just f*kin' sell it
About overheat on my phone, yeah it does sometimes. During summer it can get up to 40C (the ambient, not phone), the phone overheats while using for browsing, but I think it's normal.
It gets hot when playing NFS:MW, the performance drops but I just have to leave there for 30 min and its good again.
The phone generally gets up to 43 C when playing...

I'm fully stock, locked bootloader, stock rom with only some bloatware removed. As soon as your phone gets hot, try to run quadrant and you will see your performance will have reduced. I think you can also see your CPU speed has gone down to 800Mhz.
And by the way, like I said before, I'm on my second XPS, and the first one also overheated, so I guess they all do that. I think you may have noticed the phone becoming laggy after some heavy usage sessions.
Anyway, I am not sure if every phone somehow clocks itself down when it gets hot and then starts running like crap until it cools down again, but on all the phones I've used in my life, this is the only one that does it and after such a short period of heavy usage. It's just ridiculous, there should be class actions up sony's ass for this, but it seems like I'm the only one who realized this happens and literally cripples the phone's performance until you stop using it, basically.

If the phone kept at full speed, it would heat even more at the point of damaging the internal components.

I know how to keep the performance as good as it was cold. But the temperature won't drop i meant it's still warm.

I am not retarded, I know how overheating works, I'm an IT technician and I deal with overheating bleeping computers all day long.
The point is, the phone SHOULD NOT overheat and clock itself down to half the speed after just a few minutes of gameplay. This is ridiculous.
Why are you missing the point?

It overheats, and it should, because you're running a 3D game. Again, it clocks down to avoid bigger overheat and damage. My phone performance keeps the same after 1 hour of playing NFS:MW. It just need a few minutes to start the processes again, since the game use it all.

The thermal throttling kicked in so that's why the OP seeing lowered performance.
Please read more about hardware before you post these.

Of course the phone should get hot, and if it does the CPU should def do something about it and underclock

thats not permanent, its the app staying in cahced processes just in case it needs relaunching. try ending the process and try benchmarking again
you find removing it from the ram as a process may help
i just ran quadrant on mine
its warm cause im playing music and have tons of crap open. it hasnt slowed down. and its score was 2937. i dont see the issue though? the number means nothing on its own. its a potential comaprison tool

Pffft. Do you even know what you are talking about? It SHOULD NOT overheat, only heat up a bit. Playing a game or doing anything CPU intensive should not OVERHEAT the phone, only heat it up a bit. There is a difference between heating up and OVERheating. Overheating means there is something wrong with the cooling solution, and should not happen unless the cooling system or the chip itself (this case, since a cellphone doesn't have a cooling system) is faulty. Learn what 'overheating' means.

You also have trouble reading and understanding basic english. If I play a game, then quit out of it, and then run quadrant and I get half the score, there is something wrong, that being the CPU clocking itself down to 800Mhz (instead of 1500) because of overheating. OVER HEATING, not simply heating up. Over heating is NOT normal. If I only had too much stuff open, the CPU wouldn't have clocked itself down to 800Mhz, it would have ran at 1500 but with reduced performance in quadrant because of high memory and CPU workload in background stuff.
Anyway, I'm done with you guys. Educate yourselves on how processors, operating systems and electronic devices work then come back.

It's 45 nm, dual core and 1.5 gHz. ofc it got hot. But not overheating. When the hardware is overheating, it'll turn off, u should know that.. I said again, it's the rom/kernel that asked the procie to lower itself when in some temp. mine? I never have this problem since in cm10. Read my posts again. And surely I benchmarked over and over again (antutu) and the scores are vary, but not very much (I even got Max scored at my fifth try, the phone was hot though, but it was alright)
And if u search about xperia s overheating, there are some talks (even here in xda) bout performance hits, etc.. but it was way back there... I thought ppl already learn how to handle this... well, I thought wrong.
Ang if u thought the phone is hot, try playing with HTC one x...

So I've got the E970 (AT&T's model) and it apparently does not light staying cooled down.
When doing modest gaming, and even surfing the web I get this lovely message:
"Unable to brighten more due to high temperature. Try again later."
That seems rather depressing. Considering the phone is great. The screen, that is wonderful and I like being able to have my screen maxed while charging or whenever. If the screen is pretty, I want to exploit that, after all.
One thing I've noticed, This thing is constantly sucking a gig of RAM, even when idle.
Anywho, has anyone else experienced the heat issue? This is the second phone I've received with the same issues. I'm trying all methods possible to keep it and fix this issue rather than just taking this one back again and getting a One X+
Seriously, any advice or direction would be pretty awesome.

IMHO, Heat should be normal for quad-core mobile devices. My Tegra 3 tablet, although all plastic, heats up when using. My LGOG does heat up in heavy use. The reason of the screen brightness threshold is to reduce the increase in temp. If you're rooted, you can also notice the clockspeed of the CPU cores are also decreased to 1.18gHz when it reach a certain temperature (about 40-50 degrees).

Erm... Isn't 28nm s4 pro not supposed to heat up that much? My tegra 3 1.7ghz only scales max of 35C when browsing... Maybe getting optimus g for fun but battery life and temp is so horrible...

Didnt measure the temp on sgs3, but it feels much hotter for sure.
My phone gives me this message on a regular basis, even under relatively light use. I'm glad that there are features implemented to protect the CPU and other hardware from overheating, but good grief, this gets rather annoying - rather quickly. I haven't paid too much attention to my OS and software to notice if I'm also burning a gig of RAM at all times, but that wouldn't be terribly surprising. I'm running a lot of background stuff, ADW Launcher EX, system monitors that I never check, custom lock screen, so on and so forth...
I will say that I didn't have a single heat warning until I rooted and unlocked the phone however. Perhaps it's completely unrelated as Gabby is saying the CPU will throttle on it's own in rooted devices, but just something I noticed.
Yeah, the phone can't even be used while charging without it overheating. I would love to just be able to stop it from dimming the screen. Quite honestly, is the screen being dimmed even helping with the heat that much? If I could just take that error away and not have to worry about the heat, I'd be fine, honestly.
Someone got any ideas of before / after rooting for the temperature throttling? I don't know why it would change anything but - -

It heats up faster/easier than my Nexus 5. Anybody else noticing this? I think I'm gonna go to T-mobile tomorrow and tell them, but I wanna make sure that I'm not tripping.
Mine got quite hot when I was downloading a lot of apps in a row. It gets warm on normal browsing but not hot.
Same here, updating apps from the play store, video watching etc. Wil cause the back side, at the middle section to heat up.

I've been having that issue also. Haven't really figured out. Just know when that happens, battery drains fast.. think it's an app eating up battery creating heat but haven't figured out which one...
I am having the exact same issue. I'm thinking about switching my phone through T-Mobile and going with the M9 because I'm not hearing of this issue at all on the M9.

Yep. I also have the s6 Edge, and the heat was pretty much unbearable. I was within my 14 day return, so I have the HTC M9 on the way. It was reported HTC fixed most of the over heating issues with the M9 before launch. I will see. This phone will more than likely be returned to T-Mobile if Samsung doesn't come out with a fix soon. I could see this becoming a huge issue after launch since this phone is made out of glass and metal.
I had the Xperia Z1s which had a glass front and back and the HTC M7 and M8 and they all felt hot after using them for a while, once you put a case on them it gets less noticeable. I just assumed it would be the exact same since the S6 uses both glass and aluminum. But yes it does get hot after a while lol.

Mine only gets hot if I'm charging while doing a lot of stuff on the phone. After the OTA I did a factory reset and it seemed to fix the "always hot" issue.
Heating up is a good thing. It means you have a good thermal path from the internals to the external metal chassis. If the device stayed cool to the touch while working it would mean the internals would be at much higher temperatures and throttling would kick in to prevent breaching SOA.
That said, it should not get so hot that you cannot hold it, like a hot potato!

I have a 64gb G6E running OCG.
Well i had an S6 for some days and then got the M9
I can easily say that the M9 is the same as the S6 if not cooler. It has already been proven that the S6's CPU reaches much higher temperatures than the M9 under a medium load
By the help of CPU-Z, it was detected that the S6 CPU reaches a whoping 66℃ if you just open the camera and take a pic
While in the M9, after a half an hour of Mortal Combat X, it reached 59℃
Mind you that these temperatures are CPU TEMPs not Battery/skin temps
S6 internal design is credited to be honest for putting the CPU away from the battery by a nice distance, so the battery doesn't heat up! When the CPU was 66℃ the battery was 31℃ !!!
But in the M9, the CPU is covering the battery, so when the CPU heats up, the battery heats up also. In the case when the CPU was 59℃ the battery was 45-44℃ which is considered to be warmer than the S6's 31℃
However the M9's metal casing helps in heat dissipation a LOT!! just leave the phone for a minute or two, and the phone will cool down very fast. It can cool down all over to 36℃ from 44℃ in three minutes!! Which means that throttling effect will be removed and you can enjoy your device's full potential again in the S6, if the phone heats up badly, the temperature is preserved as the glass is a bad thermal conductor. Also the phone might be very hot to touch in the upper right quadrant of the device in thr CPU side, while the M9 will feel warm all over the device.
So conclusion, the S6's 14 nm SoC heats up more than the M9's 20 nm SoC, but the skin temperature of the M9 is higher than the S6's but it is not annoying, and cools down very fast! If the S6 feels cooler, it is because the CPU is positioned far from the battery, not because it is built on a 14 nm process :laugh:
when using wifi/4g in my house, i watched video, browsed fb and even shared internet and all. below i'll give my observations:
in wifi:
watching video, fb and browsing, whatsappin: the phone get very very slightly warm like not warm just the bit different from the phones usual temp like it hovers around 33-34.
when gaming in wifi it goes arounf 36-39 (NOVA 3) battery never crossed 31..
4g in my house, battery arounf 32-33, temperature around 37-39 for all.
but when i step out of my house, like when i'm operating my mobile in train/bus and the ambient temperature varies from say 28-32, my phone gets considerably hot and today, i was travelling in Bus and the ambient temp was around 35 and i was just browsing , watching videos and fb, my phone became hot like it even would have touched 43-46! i felt it hot to touch, is this norma(it's making me extremely paranoid)l!!??? if this is the case what happens if it's summer here, the phone would become blazingly hot, coz in summer ambient temp would be around 36-44 and all!!
Is this normala or am i unlucky for the second time ? I'm getting paranoid!

Are you serious.... When the ambient temp is 35 degree what else would you expect... Every phone on the planet will get that temperature. Can't believe you had a phone returned for this. You know the front of the device is black and absorbs light... When the sun hits your phone it's gonna heat up also. This phone is the best Android phone when it comes to thermal throttling.

With heavy multitasking, I hit 60+. Not regularly, but it has happened. The temperatures you're hitting are normal for me. I've had zero issues with the device. I have an OtterBox case, so I don't feel the heat as much. Honestly, I barely even notice heat at those temperatures. Considering the fact that the body of the device is aluminum, it's going to easily get hot to the touch.
Also, my One would almost always run between 45-70, and I've had that since launch. Used it heavily daily for years, and I still use it regularly as an app development device. No issues.
These devices have extremely powerful processors. They get hot. There's not an easy, efficient, way to cool a processor in a device like this yet, but they're designed for heavy use, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Hi first of all thanks for the reply.. I'll tell you what really made me paranoid.. Every evening I travel in bus and train and the ambient temperature would be from27-28_29.. I use 4g jio.. I just browsw/fb/insta.. In minutes my phone near the earpiece on the screen gets warmed up and it'd go around 40-41. Then I lock it it cools down fast but when I unlock it in seconds again starts warming up... My friend using same 4g in moto g4plus but his screen is cooler than mine... Please my one last doubt...
This is nothing lol. I live in Scotland so just now ambient temperature range from 5-13 °c and in my house 21-23°c and my Z3+ hits 60-70°c easily on heavy use. Benchmarked it one day and hit 90°c. The joys of the 810 chipset. Anyway away to upgrade to the OP3T so i should see and feel a massive difference.

Install a custom ROM and kernel and limit your background tasks. You may just have a bunch of things running using your CPU.

Hey all thank you guys very much for replying to my thread! i'm really feeling okay instead of getting paranoid with my phone.. although i'd be very happy if you guys just clear me this last doubt!
today I was playing NOVA 3 connected to wifi in an ambient temperature of 25C, 5-10mins into gaming, CPU reaCHED A MAX OF 41c and at around 20 it maintaining at 43 but jumping sometimes 45.. this is gaming, but i get the same temperature just browsing in knda same ambient temp while I'm travelling. and also browsing in wifi/4g(fb,insta,chrome) in my house in ambient 25-27 gets the phone phone to 35-37... and the rest of the pat of the mobile is cool, even the back side is normal, only the small portion between the earpiece..
why is this happening? is this normal(it'd be great if you guys clear this)? if yup y so? and why phones like oneplus x and moto g4 etc have relatively less temp than OP3..
I know it'd be irritating to answer kinda same question again, but this would my help paranoiac freaking out for my mobile will go down..

Because the Oneplus 3 is a lot faster, the Temps you are giving are n even close to hot... This has been one of the cooler phones so far.
Like others said, those temps are completely normal. Hell, I'd even expect them to be higher with your fairly high ambient temps.
About comparison with other phones - it all depends on internals and design. OP3 is made of aluminum so it'll dissipate more heat into the case - you'll feel it better. Other mentioned phones are plastic, so they'll contain more heat inside (you'll not feel so much heat, but the cpu may even run hotter).
And OP3 has cpu located just below the camera, so it's normal that it reaches top temps in that upper center part of the device.
P.S.: You talked about loads and ambient temps, but didn't mention screen brightness - that also plays a massive role in running temperatures.

for me mostly brightness bar will be in the middle... i never use it with high brightness..
Just get a case and maybe a screen protector so that you can't feel it getting hot.

hey ya !! sorry to disturb you again and again.. just a urios doubt.. what'd be the temperature of the phone or how hot can it gets, when u use 4g and fb app in ambient temperature of 29C and 33C..
mine got arounf 38-41 for the 1st cse and around 43 for the second case..
I know i'm being paranoid, ,but please, clearing tis would help stop worrying a bit

About Moto g, it has much weaker SoC. A Ferrari's engine gets much more hotter than a toy car. Doesn't mean there is anything wrong with Ferrari
4G /3G active usage can get hotter than gaming. That's also normal

Nothing much to worry here. Even I use Jio all the time. My OP3 get a lot hotter than any other device I use before. Reasons I knew are these.
1. OP3 rock with a high end processor. Say SD 820. Other phones you mentioned are consisting of relatively lower end processor. So internally they might heat up more that OP3 while doing high processor intensive tasks, but the plastic casing keep the heat inside, as OP3 is made up of Aluminum that being a metal heats up so quickly and and u feel more hotter in hands than the other ones and also it cools faster.
2. AFAIK the processor is situated just below the Camera bump. Hence it heats up very quickly at that area. Irrespective of outside temperature.
3.While using 4G network it's obvious that the phonehave to communicate with the network at a very high rate than 2G or WiFi. So it's clear that it will heat up. Also using high processor intensive application like Facebook gives the processor high stress and it heats up in no time.
Remedies
1. Use a case. That somewhat helps in insulating the heat.
2.If possible use WiFi rather than 4G network. That will considerably helps your battery life.
Conclusion.
Don't worry about the warmth of the phone.Its normal. Just enjoy using the phone.

Clearly never experienced a SD810 device. I'm sure Snapdragon took there name too seriously with that chipset. I could hit HIGH 80°c in seconds playing basic games, using the camera and under heavy usage. Had to tailer my use around my Z3+ but now I have the 3T I can do what I want and it never goes past 50°c so far.
Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the OnePlus 3T stays cool under extended heavy use. A higher rating indicates that even when playing strenuous games for long periods of time, the phone doesn't get uncomfortably warm.

Got the phone today, and it feels very cold to the touch. Most of the heat It gained was from my own hands... though it is winter. I then put a silicon transparent case, and after setting everything up I did some google cardboard vr for around 30 minutes and felt a light warmth through the case... barely noticeable.
Mine is getting pretty warm after rooting, making a nandroid backup, and flashing xposed. Not quite uncomfortable, but very noticeable.
My phone has only heated up a couple of times, and that was when I really used it, games and such.. Otherwise it's really "dead" to the touch.
If you want to heat it up, use some benchmarks, or if you want to be more productive, use mapillary outside and photomap your area around.

For me its exact the same thing...
Of course its gonna heat up if your cpu and gpu are working at max speed all the time.. its normal
First day when I flashed custom rom, installed all apps, rooted, twrp and all that it was hot to the touch because the reason above but now when I use it in a normal way its actually cold to the touch most of the times and I love that
I rooted mine and installed a rom really got hot then I changed to a different rom and it is very cool now.
OnePlus 3T is a really cool device. I suggest users to buy it. It has very cool features like Fingerprint access, Camera etc.
But if anyone gets Official TWRP for Android 7.0 for OnePlus 3T, Please tell me*
Never felt any kind of heat through the case (Orzly 2-part case).

i have noticed it's evenly warm when it shouldn't be. try enabling "Auto close high power usage apps" battery options.
the description makes me laugh. engrish.
"When it runs, the system auto clean up background power-hungry apps , prevent phone from getting hot."
It doesn't warm up much, if at all, for me, but I am using a rom that underclocks the CPU which could be the primary reason for this.
On 3.5.4 I would have occasional heating after a phone call. Battery stats would show that the phone was using the CPU for extended periods after the call had ended. Usually a deep clean of the ram would solve it. Sometimes it didn't solve and then a reboot would solve the problem. Phone was completely stock.
It was comparatively very cool throughout with the CPU temps being in the mid 20s or low 30s even during charging at 3.4A with the dash charger!

Heating issue
Got my phone few days ago its heating when i am playing clash of clans but otherwise no issues in normal mode.

The phone stays cool to the touch even under heavy gaming. (Max 35C on cpu)
Heating hasn't been an issue so far. Had an app causing constant 70% CPU usage and the device was just slightly warm

Any manufacter could make a super cool phone by just setting an agressive thermal profile. Oneplus 3/3T doesnt throttle at all, not with gaming. The phone gets warm, but you have to consider that it's using his full potencial. I prefer a hot phone (not the case) than a cool phone with half of the power the soc offers.
