Another G4 Bootloop thread - Verizon LG G4

Woke up last saturday morning, grabbed my phone on the way outside and it was off, dead battery, went and grabbed the spare from the charger popped it in, and hello infinite boot loop death.
Ive tried the freezer trick, but waiting 15 mins for 63 apps to optimize each time is death.
I called LG spent 2 1/2 hours on hold, disconnected 3 times, and when I finally got a supervisor to speak with I had to convince them the boot loop was a known issue and they would call me back on Monday. Never got a call.
Following day went into Best Buy where I purchased the phone and it was 11 months old, 505, they advised me to go to Verizon, Walked over to the verizon store a few doors down and had a great customer service experience, they took everything I said for face value, offered to send me a 'Like New' replacement, got that phone 2 days later, started up, and its a bigger piece of **** than my boot loop brick. Wont stay on for more than 5 mins, sometimes it boot loops, other times it doesn't, locks up harder and faster than a frogs bhole ..
once again went back to Verizon, again amazing customer service, now on my 3rd LG G4 in the mail, 2nd Like New..
I am pretty done with G4 completely.. and I can't just upgrade because I'm on the ULD still.. so I'm going to try and press for my replacement credit if/when this phone fails again and try the BB trick again.
My question to XDA users is what VZW phone are you looking at after your G4? I really need something that can have the hotspot unlocked. the Galaxy S7 looks decent, but looks like boot loader unlock is not coming, and worse camera.
here is a highlight of my conversation with LG Supervisor that has made others laughed:
Me: Based on LG's faulty manufacturing and after this phonecall process bad customer retention, can you give me one reason to ever buy an LG product again... just one?
Supervisor: umm come on *my name* you know why
Me: no please, tell me, you have a poorly constructed phone, and you're arguing with customers over the fix, and now you're telling me there is nothing you can do to make me the customer happy so I purchase another LG product..
Supervisor: I understand, but, but, LG is... well because they're good.
Me: ahh yes good. what is good exactly the products or the customer service?
**dead air for about a min.**

Im worried that by doing that I'll void the warranty and LG won't accept my claim, i've also rooted the phone, and i've read negative feedback on that also.

NO they won't find out I did it all & got my phone replaced they want to keep there customers so they'll do whatever it takes to make the customer happy

My phone is a 510 build. Still rev 1.0. If I were looking right now for a phone on Verizon, it would be the S7 or the wait for the next Note or Nexus. If you were to not use Verizon anymore, which is what I'm contemplating, I would either get a Nexus or OnePlus Three.

access adb with usb debugging on but dev options off
sooooooo.... i have a verizon g4 thats on 13b and rooted . i tried to edit a line in the build.prop file to allow ANY 2 apps to open at the same time and i did something wrong and now im stuck in a boot loop. i would normally just use lg root tool to reflash the rooted system img to my phone to fix this, thats not too big a deal. my real problem is i have usb debugging on but dev options off so usb debugging prob is too so adb will b useless if thats the case sooo i guess i just need to know if usb debug will work if dev options are off?

Are you wanting to get data off of it or just reset it? Or are you wanting to just try to fix the build.prop? How far does your boot get (LG screen or Verizon)? Will it boot into download mode?
EDIT: I just turned on debug and turned off dev mode, and it automatically turns off debug. I couldn't connect to my phone via adb. The way that I escape from bootloops, at least when it makes it to the Verizon screen, is using LGUP in the same way the downgrade is done. I can't post links, but it is at this post: forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-g4/general/downgrade-mm-to-ll-lgup-t3322616

[Q] Backlight dead?

Hi,
I just get a e-980.
With no special reason, the screen stop working, I realized under the sunlight, that my LCD still working, but I have no more backlight.
I can barely see white color shapes.
Is it a ''normal'' issue with those phones?
- I've opened it, clean contacts from ribbon cables. - didn't work
- I've done a complete stock reflash with LgFlashTool - didn't work
If you guys have no clue, I'm scared that I'm dealing with a brick, and get back my old reliable desireZ
thank you
Guess first thing to do in such a situation is to check if there is some obvious glitch- maybe brightness turned down to zero, phone not waking up die to some mod etc.. If does not work, then next is factory reset.. Next is a tot flash and then visit to the service center

yep. All done.
Like I said, I can receive calls/txt. I ear the unlock sound, etc. I can see LCD ON under bright sunlight.
Right now, I'm just thinking to throw it in the garbage, a 250$us phone that worked 2 days !!! Wow, people told me to never touch LG, I start to believe them.
Maybe some body here can sell me a functional LCD with broken digitizer??, mine is brand new.
I just dont want to dump more money in it, since the HTC is working strong, even for a 4 yo device
I'll try with LG warranty service, but it was a final sale
Exactly same issue with me too
I bought my LG OPTIMUS G PRO a few days back refurbished, it worked flawlessly for around a week. A few days ago its screen went blank even though it was possible to use screen blank like answering calls etc, i thought humidity has affected it and buried it in rice for one day and it worked again but after 2 days it again went blank and this time burying it didn't help. I am without luck now and looking for some workaround. Please someone help us if anyone knows how to fix it?
Awaiting eagerly for some suggestions.:crying:
Mmm seem to be a LG problem...
Event on optimus G forums people seems to have this trouble.
You just remind me something, went the screen go off, it was 90% rel humidity here, good point.
I tried to put it under high heat and the freezer. no luck.
All I want to know it's if it's the main board problem or screen.
Last time with LG pos, my brother had the LG 3D, wow, pos as well, nexus aren't the best phone as well.
HTC ftw, but the latest models are so no-user friendly on the hardware, seems like they try to copy apple.
My moto milestone 500mhz (2009) still working better than this, lol.
If you don't have a warranty, I'd open it up then clean and reseat the screen dongle connector.
This happened to my optimus g. Suddenly the screen went dark. I opened it up reseated everything and it didn't help. Thinking of buying a mee lcd when I find one cheap enough

yeah, but how you'll be sure that problem wont came back in a year?
The last time I heard about backlight stop working/burn, it was on compaq laptop with pentiumII processor.
1 1/2 year old phone, that's not normal.
any way, I put the phone in a bag of rice for the night, powered up, and the back light came on for 3 seconds.
-- 5 days and still have NO supports from LG.
This is just a thought. I had something similar happen in one of two ways, either the screen turning all red or dark. It was an issue with a night reading program, Twilight. After I managed to turn that off the problem went away.
If you have programs like Lux or Twilight running or anything that can control the screen try and turn them off.
Update.
I didn't touch the phone for days, leaving the battery out. Then I put it back just to be ready to retry a clean flash.
Screen all black.
I had something to do, I leave it on my desk for few hours, and when I came back to play with it, the screen light up. It's been a day , no issue, but some times the screen flicker.
It will probably let me down soon.
Strange issue : the home button led light doesn't work anymore.
Is it because I flashed the telcel stock rom on the e980 at&t?
DOES SOMEONE know HOW to get service FROM THIS company????

They just don't care, the moment I said that I bought this phone to the US and use it on a Canada carrier (Rogers / At&T , dont need to unlock the phone! ) , they flush me .
WTF???????????
Seriously people, don't deal with them.
So far, what I learn is that more this device is getting old ( wtf? a year or so isn't old) they have observed this issue.
Be careful pals, don't over use it
IF you buy a LG product, do not expect customer support. My e980 had a failed battery at 10months, LG basically told me to go screw my self. (Wanted me to pay to ship the phone, which would cost more then a new battery, and why do they need the phone when the battery is faulty, i gave up, bought myself a new battery, and have been good since. ) other then that, i like their hardware, ive had a G2X and now the G pro.

I see a lot of people try to blame manufacturer for the issues of their phone. LG, HTC, Samsung, Apple.
Remember, they all offer one year warranty. So if your phone is still under warranty, go RMA. I already got two HTC and one Samsung exchanged.
If your phone is not under warranty, did you buy it used ? Then you should blame the previous owner or yourself. Why did this happen to your phone ONLY while ten's of thousands of users here are fine?Did you do something that may cause the issue?
This is not personal. I just try to say something fair when I see people said "Never touch LG/Samsung/HTC.."
It won't help your phone come back. And it did mislead other users

It doesn't sound like they told you to "go screw yourself" exactly. It actually makes quite a bit of sense that a manufacturer would want all of a faulty device to arrive rather than that their customer just send them the parts they assessed as faulty. If they had to send you a new device, they would probably want the old one intact.

I called LG to exchange my Nexus 4 earlier this year. I call only once and they give me a shipping address( HTC also give address when I called ), asking to ship within 10 days or so .
They did NOT ask the carrier of my Nexus 4.( T-Mobile if you want to know ). They just check Imei and verified that the phone was under warranty.
I did not send the phone back to LG in the end. Someone bought it from me. The Nexus 4 has light yellow tint on display but hardly noticeable. The buyer don't care..
My point is, OP, I guess you did not told us that your phone might not be under warranty

Asking you to shipping back to factory is Exactly what is called customer service.
All manufacturers do so!
They need to run full software and hardware check on your device, making sure that all parts are working when they return the phone to you.
You might care a few bucks shipping cost . But truth is that maybe battery was not just the faulty part. Something else MIGHT go wrong as well. They need to find out once you call in for RMA.
It is YOU don't know what customer service is, Not them.

[Q] Phone wont start past LG opening screen

Hi, hoping for some input. I am not super technical.
We have a newish LG G3 phone. TBH, it is reconditioned by the authorised service centre as it apparently came out with flaws. It came with full LG warranty. We bought in January 2015. This week, it suddenly would not turn on past the LG screen. We tried changing batteries, leaving the battery out, nothing. We took it to the same authorised repair centre. They turned it on and said that we had rooted the phone and had voided the warranty. Now, I would not mind paying, if we had infact rooted the phone, but we had not. Further, they did not look into the electronics of the phone at all. They are asking $225 which is HUGE for us, I am wondering please, is this a known problem? We had not clicked any download links, in fact, not even downloaded any apps in the days preceding. I am so angry that they wont even look into the phone, the onus should be on them to prove to me that I rooted it, not to assume that I did when I didn't lol. Your help is so gratefully appreciated.

Did you buy from a carrier or a physical store?if you did it would be best to directly take it back to the place where you bought it and get them to sort it out?
If the person says that then the person isnt doing their job properly. A variety of issues not caused by you could have happened that result in this sort of problem. This isnt a known problem.
Does it boot into download mode?

We bought it from the place that is the authorised LG repairer in Sydney. I was getting my screen replaced, and noticed they had a sign up saying they had these reconditioned phones with full LG warranty. It was explained to me that these were the newly released phones that came out with glitches, they were repaired fully. So we did take it back to the same place, and I agree they are not doing their job properly, they have us by the short and curlies . I have mediated with Fair Trading, who have come back to say that the device is rooted, warranty voided lol. They still have NOT opened the phone!!! So frustrating.
Please ask them to explain how the device was rooted, they at least owe you that much?
When you got it did you or them turn it on and verify in the store that it was working at the store before you took it? Did you perhaps download the Lollipop OTA and then something happened to it
Does it still boot into download mode? Im pretty sure in your case you can still fix it if you can get it to boot into download mode. Pull out the battery and put it back in, hold volume up and plug it into the computer. Let me know what happens

Personally I would first delete spotify then reboot see if it fixes it,I personally don't think its the app spotify but worth a try. I would then also backup my data and try a factory reset. If that also does not work consider re flashing a new stock rom.

Nope it may remove the app but not root and service will be able to tell if it's rooted..Best way is to flash a stock kdz to get rid of any traces of it.

Hi, sorry to hijack the thread but my LG G3 d855 is exactly the same. on 29th December i noticed that the wifi wasn't connected to my home network, so did a reboot and still the same. I spent an hour or 2 googling this to find i wasn't the only one. Most had suggested a factory data reset, however said that this doesn't always work. I tried that and still the same so rang my network provider who passed me through to LG UK. It was booked in for a repair and collected on the 5th Jan. I got the phone back on the 26th Jan, and it took me less than 10 minutes to get the same wifi not connecting issue again. On the repair note it states they have changed the ic/pa/filter and updated the software to v20l (although I'm sure i was on later than that anyway). I rang LG again and it was collected the next day. I received the handset on tuesday, and the note this time said software updated, phone tested. I put the battery in, turned the phone on and within a minute found that the wifi would not turn on at all. I also noticed that the build version was V20h, which is a downgrade from the version that was on the phone when i sent it back to them.
I have rang LG again, and was told that they would look at it, but that i might need a new phone. When i questioned the new phone statement and asked why i needed to buyt a new phone, the woman didnt answer me. Anyway, the phone is getting collected today, and i really dont hold out much hope that it will be repaired. I have mailed LG direct to complain about this but i am at the point where i might move away altogether from LG. I am stuck until June waiting for my contract to expire, but am so frustrated with LG and their repair service as they have had my phone over a month now and havent fixed it.
This phone (g3) have bad quality components....my last lg....back to Samsung....I want my S5 again or a new S7 or note 4. Fantastics super amoled displays, great conections, all works. I'm tired of suffering...kkk

Well, update so far is they have "repaired" the handset and its on its way back to me so will get it on monday. I was going to bet a guy at work that it wouldnt be repaired but he wouldnt take the bet. if its still not fixed i think i need to go down the replacement route. I have tried to be polite about this, but the fact that they have ignored 3 emails from me trying to raise a complaint, numerous tweets and facebook messages is making me feel like LG are not a company that can be trusted. I realise that I am a tiny insignificant stone on the bottom of their shoe and am meaningless in the grand scheme of things, but i've never dealt with a company that simply ignores you....
I will update on monday when i turn the phone on
So as a follow up, I got the phone back on Monday and so far it is working fine, WiFi is connecting with no problems. The fix that has been reported is replacing the mainboard. 1 niggle now though is that there is now a hiss in the headphones that comes and goes which wasn't there when i sent the phone in for the million repair attempts. I cant be bothered to go through the hassle of reporting it and sending it off for repair so I'm just going to live with it (its not too bad, just annoying when the music is quiet or paused). I only have a couple of months before I can upgrade, and had thought about a G4 or G5 but after the past 2 months i don't think i'll bother.

I only have a couple of months before I can upgrade, and had thought about a G4 or G5 but after the past 2 months i don't think i'll bother.

so sorry for late reply, didnt know you had asked a question. Mine was done under warranty (apparently LG have a 2 year warranty with Three) so mine was fixed under that. I would guess that it would of been about 100 quid though for the work that they did, if not more. It took them far too many attempts to fix it though, which has left me with a bitter taste towards LG, so not sure whether to get the G5 next, the G4 or move onto a different make altogether

I actually havent got it repaired and im still using it. I called lg and they told me there was a one year warranty on the g3 so im just keeping it until i decide on a new phone to get

Bootloop hardware failure and LG's incompetent repair

I finally ran into the bootloop problem that is common with early G4's (if you have a serial number that starts with 505, you're basically gonna be screwed at some point). Since it's a hardware issue that LG acknowledges, I sent it back to the factory under warranty, waited for two weeks using my old backup phone, and finally received it back today.
Ready for the fun part? They had repaired something that wasn't broken (kind of like surgery on the wrong body part) and had not touched the bootloop issue! They fixed "No power with cable" by replacing the flash memory. This was never an issue. The frustrating thing is that they didn't even restart the phone to find out if it had been fixed, because if they had it would have gone right back into the bootloop. Arg!
The G4 is now back on route to LG. I said they should give me a new phone, but customer service said they only do that if it cannot be repaired. I'll keep my fingers crossed that they go to the trouble to turn on the phone after "repair" this time.
Thanks for letting me rant!
I have currently my 2nd G4 that has run into this issue. This one has serial number starting with 506, so I guess it might stem a little further into production also. This is driving me nuts, I could not send my phone to LG because of how long it takes so had Verizon send me one and of course I run into the same exact issue with the bootloops. Last time I was able to still flash kdz's, this time won't even go past the LG boot screen. Really wish I could wipe my data at least.
I can attest to LG's incompetence. On March 2nd I sent in my G4 because it was bootlooping. Sent it in no problem, and after about a week I received my G4 back with the problem "fixed" by flashing the memory. Well guess what, it wasn't fixed. As soon as I turned it on, it started to bootloop again. I called LG and they arranged another RMA. Sent it back again, and about a week and a half later, I had my G4 back. This time they "fixed" it by replacing a capacitor. Guess what! Still not fixed. It still continued to bootloop. Called LG extremely angry and filed a complaint. LG arranged another RMA. At this point I had been without my phone for over 20 days. Finally, LG fixed it properly by replacing the motherboard. Now its fixed and it only took them over a month to figure it out.
While I applaud their easy RMA process, whoever the idiots are actually doing the repair are just that.. idiots. Its as if they don't even turn the phone on and ensure it fully boots up before they claim its fixed and ship it back. Whats worse for me is my phone was rooted on VS986B. Got the phone back on Marshmallow 24C and it took the update to 25a overnight. Now I'm stuck with no way of rooting.....
When you get your phone back from LG, chances are it will be on 24C. If you plan on rooting, do so quickly and downgrade.

When they finally replaced the motherboard, did the physical serial number on the phone change?

No, that's the same. The board was replaced, but the plastic piece that holds that battery, which is on top of the board, was not replaced.
Happy to report that all is well after the second repair. Came back with 6.0, but I downgraded to 5.1, rooted, and have just about everything working again (can't get Exposed to work, but I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually). Nothing like spending 3+ weeks on a 2011 Droid Bionic to make me appreciate my G4!
Would one of you care to explain how you contacted LG to set up the repair. I have filled out the online form twice and have never heard a word. Thanks.

Im not sure if you are in the U.S., but here's their support phone number 800 243-0000. They are usually pretty easy to deal with over the phone.
I am still kicking myself that I didn't downgrade as soon as I got my phone back. I hate not having root anymore.

Droid bionic.. I wish! I originally dug up my old Galaxy Nexus, but the battery life was so bad that I swapped it out for my son's old Droid Razr. Of course, I had to safestrap it and put a custom ROM on there because I have a LG G Watch R and android wear was not compatible with the factory software on the Razr. It was a pretty horrible experience overall. I'm glad I have my G4 back, but I really miss root.
You can still downgrade to 5.1 and root. Mine was on the latest version when it came from the factory and I didn't have any problems with the process.
Same thing happened to me. It took 3 RMA's in a row and about 60 days until they finally fixed it. They scratched it, too. OP, I highly recommend you start documenting everything. LG CS will also tell you escalating will get you nowhere; but with persistence you can get a hold of someone. You can only go up to a supervisor, and that's it. LG has specifically designed their CS (including their facebook and twitter) to contain and ignore you.
In less than 1 calendar year i am on my 3rd phone.. Figuring the 1st phone was a flop... serial numbers since my 1st phone are 511 and 505. So yeah.. im debating at what a ticking timebomb i havenow. The 3rd one came w/ MM installed but I downgraded to LL to keep root. Im sure it goes w/o saying that I'll not buy an LG phone ever again.. and this was my 1st one. They could offer to upgrade me to a G5, but honestly there are NO guarantees this sort of thing will happen again. You break trust you pay the price, look at Samsung w/ the no MicroSD card fiasco.
LG just accepted my 15 month old G4 for warranty repair
Even though my phone is 15 months old, LG has accepted it under warranty repair. When requesting repair I wrote that it was the bootloop issue but their repair confirmation states the issue is "No Power with Cable". I hope they fix the correct issue! BTW, my serial number began with 511
The US warranty is 18 months, so LG didn't do you any favors. I have three of these POS phones to get warranty repaired and hope they fix them correctly the first time.

I just got mine back today june 1st 2017, Sent G4 for bootloops 1st time a week ago. No power / Mainboard was replaced. it was purchased november 2015 and Serial number is 511 which is right after the supposed bad batch. I got the phone back in the same great condition it left. The repair guy reported phone condition has minor scratches when it doesn't, Not sure why he would report that. So far its working great, like a new phone. I can only hope this board has been redesigned to not fail under a year and a half, but thats just wishful thinking. Everything was completely free even though phone was like 5months+ after its warranty. Even though costumer service on phone sounded like she was doped out on crack and ignoring all my questions, it was still ez to do and I got it back fast. The IEMI number or whatever was also changed and they put a new sticker over top the old one under the battery. I tried checking the number on that website and it doesn't even have it registered so i can only hope its brand new.
Got a couple of VS986s back from bootloop warranty repair. Mainboards supposedly repaired, but IMEI stayed the same and nothing on label under battery changed . I recall other people mentioned changes to label information.
Last week a representative told me the current warranty on the G4 for this issue is 27 months from date of manufacture or 24 months from date of purchase.
Mine has S/N 508. It started bootlooping while I was pooping (browsing Facebook on Chrome browser) on June 5.
I attempted the hot-air rework station fix 5 times (for processor on mainboard), and that worked on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th tries. Each time the phone worked for up to ~4 hours. On the 5th try the phone no longer booted or even showed the LG logo.
It's en-route to LG right now. I opted to ship it without battery or back cover (my back cover has a wireless charging tag).
Using my old Samsung Galaxy S3 running an AOSP-variant on 4.4.2. Actually isn't a bad phone.
My old LG G2's touchscreen no longer responds to touches on roughly 50% of the screen... can't even unlock it via pattern lock any more.
Thinking LG won't be the next new phone I buy...
Well, my G4 is on its way back to me after LG's warranty repair. Turn-around time at the LG service facility was ONE (1) DAY!! So that was super fast. Should get it tomorrow or the day after. Contemplating putting it back up for sale or trade-in though... it's basically gonna be a virgin device that will require root, xposed, restoring apps/messages/call log/etc., then adjusting everything else to my liking. Would be a shame to do all that work and then the bootlooping problem happens again.

Boot Loop after one month

Here we go again...
Another LG phone having boot loops...
Bought from Best Buy on April 5TH with no protection...
May 6 phone started its random turn off....Have to do a battery pull and rest it for 10 minutes to get it to start up again..
After a min or two , it powers off again..
Yes, I was able to do soft and hard re-sets to no avail...
Just filed a repair request with LG...
Grrrrrrr

I had the same issue with Sprint LG G5. I bought it in April 13 the from Best Buy. It started to reboot 3 times at first and got real hot before it started rebooting. I took it to Sprint repair center where they suggested to do a factory reset. I told them I can do that. But before I was able to do a factory reset, it finally died. Sprint didn't want to replace the phone since I didn't have insurance. I might have to send it to LG for warranty repair which will take 9 business days. Do not buy the LG G5..
About a week and a half after I got my G5 it overheated really badly and turned itself off and wouldn't restart after attempting to reboot several times. I disconnected it from the power source let it cool off then plugged it in using the OEM power wart that came with the phone. That worked and the phone restarted. A week later the same happened. The phone overheated and attempted to restart several times and this time it seemed hotter than the first time. It turned itself off eventually and I was unable to turn it back on again. Less than three weeks into ownership and the phone was completely unresponsive and dead. I took it into the sprint dealership and they initially refused to replace the phone despite the fact it was under a month before this problem surfaced. They wanted to take the dead phone and have a new one shipped out to me. I told them that was unacceptable and they came up with the compromise that if I signed up for protection now they would backdate it and give me a new replacement phone. I took the deal with the full intention of canceling the protection plan within a month or two after I'm sure this new phone isn't going to be an issue. The new phone has been pretty solid for me so far. It gets warmer than I like but that may just be a product of hypersensitivity to heat after the first phone. That was the first time with any phone that I've ever had where a phone catastrophically failed on me like that. Sprint's response at the their shop was completely unacceptable given the time frame since purchase. I like the phone but I'm not liking how ownership of it is starting out. This was about two weeks ago now and I'm still gunshy with this phone afraid this new one is going to crash on me as well. I do not like that feeling. Thank God I have a backup phone just in case.
Goes to show phones these days are not built the same. I've had the g5 since day 1, not any of the problems I've read I've had since owning the phone. I got mine from a Sprint store also. Only issue I have is the slight lag I have when connecting to anything internet related. I believe that to be something kernel related.
sent from my g5

You may want to try enabling Use legacy DHCP client in developer options. Worked pretty well for me.
