Returning to HTC would like some advice - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Haven't had a HTC device since the m7 and HTC Max.
Managed to get the HTC10 as a deal for my Moto X Style and £110.
I've had a look into the bootloader screen and it's showing this. What would this mean? Thanks

Which bit are you referring to?
Your bootloader is unlocked and you're s-on is what I can see but you're question is quite vague.

That's pretty much it.... it has an unlocked bootloader
Sent from my HTC 10 using XDA-Developers mobile app

OK would that mean the previous owner unlocked the bootloader then? Or do some phones come unlocked?
I guess if when I get round to rooting. I can S-off. And then flash custom recovery etc.
When I had my m7 this screen looked different. I think it was the hboot menu...
Just wondered what the 'htc_pmeuhl' bits means as well. Thanks.

That's the code name for the HTC 10. And I guess the previous owner unlocked the bootloader, your on 401 os which is international and I don't think (not 100% sure) that they come unlocked.
You would have to install a custom recovery to gain root, then s-off.

I'm guessing 401 is curren.
tly the most Updated version? He must have then yeah. Definitely unlocked though it's worked with EE network and O2 as well. Thanks. Will look into it cheers.

401 means it's an international variant, that part won't change unless you decide to s-off, go super cid and flash a different base. The first two numbers give you the version you're on. You're on 1.30.401 and the latest firmware is 1.80.401.

Getting thread has been deleted by administrator. ? I take it there is a wide range of RUUs and should be able to use that to restore to stock. And I guess could follow the instructions posted there? How do I find out what my correct version and stock cid is etc? I remember from the m7 there was some type of facebook command which brought up the phone info? Thanks

He, random, I just followed it fine. But yeah, there's a good guide of RUU, can't remember if it's in general or Q&A. Your version is in the picture you sent. 1.30.401.1 and when you went super cid, you should have taken note of your original cid. I'm not sure what it would've been.

I currently haven't done anything with the phone. Got it less then 24hrs ago. Swapped my phone and some money for it. I checked the bootloader last night and it had unlocked. Which I thought was odd as the person I got it off said he hadn't done any rooting with it.
So your saying from my picture it looks like I'm super cid? Thanks.

I've just booted into bootloader to check. It doesn't actually say which CID or MID I'm on. Also what is the 'system info' option for as if I select it my phone screen goes blank? And have to force a reboot. Thanks.

Bootloader won't show you and not sure about system info, never used it. To find your cid and mid, boot to your bootloader and connect to PC, then use 'fastboot getvar cid'to find your cid and 'fastboot getvar mid' to find your mid. I write mine down in a text file to always have a note of what they are.

Updating firmware w/o root

So I keep hearing of people wanting the 1.28 (or fabled 1.3X) update. I would acutally like the 1.26 update ^^. My One X came with 1.19 .
My question is, can I update without unlocking the bootloader and doing all that business? I would like to keep locked and stock for a bit longer before I start messin at roms and things.
I have read about the Paul O'brien repackage, but again, it looks to require unlock though I could be wrong.
Thanks
David
You should be able to using the RUU. You would need to get the RUU for your region though as another one would fail while updating.

I had the 1.19 before. I upgraded to 1.26. But u need the 707 rom not every 1.26would work with your phone. I can tell u that 1.26 works better than 1.19 but at least on the 1.19 u have the option to hide the 3 dots. Not on 1.26 they up all the time and no option to hide it. What else ...you don't need to unlock bootloader to upgrade u need RRU
THIS IS THE RRU U NEED TO FIND

So I think I found a 707 ROM, but I wanted to make sure it was the right thing before starting to flash since I am all locked up.
Here They talk about Endeavor Shipped ROMs, which leads to a download page where the first ROM listed is PJ46IMG_ENDEAVOR_U_ICS_40_hTC_Asia_WWE_1.26.707.4_Radio_1.1204... is this what you mean by a 707 ROM?
It would make sense since what I am currently running is: 1.19.707.1.
A follow up question is this: Since this is an update package (I think) would it wipe the phone in the process of the install? Again, I dont have a backup or a way to backup since I have a locked bootloader (if I understand the process correctly).
Thanks for helping out!!
David
The x.xx.707.x ONLY applies if your phone currently has x.xx.707.x on it
If you have x.xx.401.x then you need the 1.26.401.2 RUU
I have a 707 phone, so i need a 707 rom, I get that. But where do I get one? the page listed only has RUU, and from talking to folks in the HTC ONE X IRC room, thats not what I want.
It is what you want as there isn't an OTA for that build. You're going to lose your data however you look at it

Yes. I have not tried with this version but have done it with my evo 3D.
Double click the ruu file and wait till it gets to the readme stuff. Don't continue (and don't quit!)
Go to c:\users\<your user name>\AppData\Local look for something HTC (I can't remember), and inside it there will be 2 directories {<with a bunch of numbers/letters>}, one of them contains another directory {<with a bunch of numbers/letters>}, a file rom.zip in there is what you need.
Note, AppData is hidden in case you don't know. You can just type it in yourself and you will be there.
BTW, 1.26.707.4 has just been updated to 1.28.707.10.
<EDIT: I just checked that 1.26.707.4 I downloaded from the link provided by someone. It's a rom by itself and not RUU>

So with that file being a ROM and not a RUU would that mean that I could apply it using stock recovery and it would not require a wipe of my phone and settings (which I have worked so hard to make beautiful)?

Generally if it is from the same base, you would not have to wipe. Remember to nandroid so that you could go back should you need to. You can always try without wiping first and decide whether to wipe and continue or go back if that gives you problem.

I would think the easiest is to have a custom rom. Yours is 1.19 if I recall correctly. Not sure what that is though.
Monx has a custom based on 1.26.707.4 mixed with 1.28.401.9 (I think. It's the European one. He did this mix just before 1.28.707.10 came out. He said he was going to work on 1.28.707.10. Maybe you can wait for this). After using 707.10 for a few days, I can feel there is a difference; some bugs are gone. Teeter for example is playable now. It was jerking all over the place. Have not tried ninja though. I don't play them but use them to test.

Please answer my few questions?

Hey, I just got a HWS and I need some q's answering. I'm not a n00b to android, but I need some help with the way HTC have done it.
1.How do I unlock boot loader? HTC Dev's instructions are unclear, and I would like a full step by step.
2.I think it is network locked. Will that affect it?
3.Can I network unlock for free?
4.If there is a PC piece of software for the phone, what is it?
5.Is there a third party firmware flasher, similar to Flashtool?
6.How can I unbrick, unroot, relock bootloader and put H-BOOT back to original? Basically, put it back to the way it was bought.
I know these are n00b questions, but I have 24 hrs to decide on buying the phone. If you can just answer, with links or guides if available/ necessary , I would be extremely happy.
Faithfully,
Riku.
look at this and follow him step by step

Thanks, can you answer 2,3,5 & 6?

Network unlock is possible through original carrier, there is no free technique.
Bootloader can be unlocked through HTC Dev, a few models were shipped S-off.
There is a all in one tool somewhere in the general/Dev forum that can flash recovery, push su script, etc.
Iirc it is possible to re lock the Bootloader, but don't quote me on that.
There is a hardware difference between the 2012 and previous models causing incompatibility with certain roms and various recoveries.

Unlock bootloader even though it is network locked.
Root it.
Unbrick.
Unroot
And get it back the way it was bought?

Seriously though, it won't impact on your rooting and flashing ability.

You can skip straight ahead to the actual bootloader unlocking
S-off means that your bootloader is already unlocked, and iirc you can have access to deeper parts of your phone with a little knowledge, etc.

[Q] Trying to convert to GPE (Help)

Hello,
I'm new to Android and yesterday I bought the HTC One M8 (UK, 3). I really do not like Sense 6 so I decided to find out how to convert it to the GPE with OTA updates. I came across this thread and I think it does what I want: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2706441
I know I should post my problem in the thread above but I haven't got enough posts to do so.
I'm a complete noob so would love some assistance please.
1. I downloaded the gpe3.zip to my phone's download folder
2. Turned off phone
3. Hold down volume rocker whilst turning phone on.
4. Click Recovery
5. This appears on my phone and then reboots after a few minutes back to sense:

For that you need a custom recovery, and afaik you need s-off first before you can convert and have ota updates.
Edit :
And no s-off is not available at this time !

what this guy said, + i thought I was borked too seeing this red triangle screen, but turned out for after smashing power and vol, it's just a pre screen to recovery? I don't know which combo did it, but I hit them a couple times and then got to stock recovery screen. But what this guy said, need s-off = no s-off => no GPE for now. Surprised you don't like sense, sense 6 is awesome.

I have questions for you.. Are you unlocked? if no, unlock via HTCDEV.. Do you have a custom recovery? If no, you need one. LOTS of prerequisites.
As a N00B, you have ALOT more reading and understanding to do BEFORE you flash ANYTHING...
Take this advice, and do more reading before you go and brick your phone..

First thing you need to unlock your bootloader and root at same time be quicker. Then install philz custom recovery and make a nand backup just in case all fails. Then download the required rom and flash as normal via recovery

Thanks for the reply. I have unlocked the bootloader via htc dev but don't know anything about custom recovery or how to root.
Thanks the reply and yes I have a lot reading to do. Unfortunately I can't find many resources for my m8 handset as it just got released and it's my first android phone. I really want GPE I would of bought it if it was available in the UK
No it isn't broken after that screen it boots straight back to sense.
Thanks. I've unlocked the bootloader but don't know how to root? I downloaded weak sauce and it crashes.

Theres no need to use weaksauce. Flash supersu.zip via recovery from chainfire. Also philz posted instructions how to flash recovery via ADB
Since you are unlocked, flash recovery from fastboot. fastboot flash recovery "recoveryname.img" you dont need root since you'll be flashing a rooted ROM anyways.
I heard its possible to convert to google play edition today is that correct?

S-off is not working 100 percent with every EU/Asia Based M8 you can try firewater but be aware it may not complete the S-Off process successfully if you have an EU/Asia based M8, if you want the GPE experience simply download a custom recovery (TWRP/Philz CWM) then flash GPE Rom only, do not attempt to use RUU GPE as that requires S-Off.

To install the OTA, your system needs to have all the files it shipped with, untouched. If you've added files, such as Superuser.apk to the system, it's fine, as long as nothing was removed or overwritten. You'll also need to have the stock recovery flashed to your device to install the OTA. (Link below...) If your system files are modified, I'd suggest restoring a stock nand backup from this thread. Before restoring one of these, PLEASE backup your current setup. Also, your device does NOT need to be relocked to install this if you are S-Off. I am unsure for S-On users.

I've always been S-Off before ever doing an OTA, so I am unsure about that, but with S-Off, as long as no system apps were removed or changed, and you flash the stock recovery, the OTA should push and install just fine. You'll also be okay if you added files to your system, as long as you didn't overwrite or remove any. After accepting the OTA, I always flash TWRP again, make a backup, then re-flash SU.

I tried to find the location of the OTA but couldn't find it. I looked in /cache but nothing was in there. I'm guessing it's gone now that the OTA has been applied?
Here's a link for now. Feel free to mirror somewhere else, this was just the quickest for me.

Upgrade to Latest Firmware help

Hey all,
First, let me apologize for being that guy. The one who asks a stupid question where the fitting response is "read the damn thread." That said, I'm having a hard time figuring this out. I've read a number of threads and don't fully understand how to get this done.Coming from a Nexus 5 where flashing was very straightforward, so please be gentle.
I'm currently running a stock, rooted, unlocked, and S-ON Htc 10. I would like to upgrade to the 1.80 firmware without losing my data and settings. Can someone help me out and point me in the right direction? Thanks for the help.
Sent from my HTC 10 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I agree, I'm on the T-Mobile version, still on the stock 1.21 but running a great ROM.
Was'nt hard to unlock and root this phone, and put a on ROM too. But this whole S-Off stuff and firmware updating seems so alien and strange to me.
I also coming from a Nexus and OnePlus before that, those phones easy as 1st grade to just flash a zip in Recovery for a new firmware or modem update. Why is HTC phones so difficult to do such an easy task, and the whole CID thing too, WTF ?

A cid basically determines your phones region/network and when/where to get updates.
S-off is turning the security off so you can do things, like update your firmware not specifically released for your cid. In order to do this your cid needs to be changed (super cid covers all bases) and sometimes your mid (model id)
@AliLaPointe depending on your firmware determines what you should do, but I'd highly recommend going s-off. Saves so much hassle.

Shouldn't see that being a problem so long as you choose the 1.80.617 version.
Make sure you read up though, as I have only ever used s-off so I'm not 100% certain and if it doesn't go how you want, I don't want to be held responsible.

You definitely don't need to S-off to update.
There is a 1.80 ruu in the guide section. But you'll lose all data that way.
You say you're rooted, but do you get an error when you try to check for the ota update in settings? If so, there are ways to fix that without losing data.
Read the twrp FAQ (dev section) did help with restoring to stock in order to take an ota.
Sorry but I'm having trouble understand exactly what problem you're having. There's an abundance of information on here already about taking ota. So maybe if you tell me exactly what you're not understanding I can point you in the right direction.

Hey Jolly,
Thanks for helping man. Really appreciate it. So what's going on is that I get an error when I try to update via the normal system option. That said, I'm wondering if I can simply run a zip to bring me up to 1.80. Just trying to understand my options.
