Is there a way to change stock dpi or screen density without root?
Update: adb did the trick. You can get an extra column by changing density from 400 to 460. Keep in mind default is 480.
Here's a link on how to recommended by @hauhauhau7

Nope, you gotta root it.
What is your main reason to decrease dpi? Has it a big impact on battery life?

I can't speak for OP, but I'd like to change DPI, too. Coming from a 2k phone with 5 icon spaces, The screen real estate feels a bit small.
Add another column on Google Now launcher home screen. 4 columns makes everything really big.

So you want to increase dpi to have more space for icons? You could try a different launcher, seems to be less complicated.
Nova will resolve but I love Google Now launcher and want to keep it. I want to increase to 5 columns from 4 columns.

I have tried all the main ones on app store they dont change ur dpi found a solution on a oneplus 2 page credits to jutinarora
If you have adb drivers installed, you can just do the following 1. Connect your phone to your PC via USB cable 2. Open command prompt the run the following command "adb shell wm density DPI", where "DPI" should be the number you want. For example, if you want your DPI as 380, the command will be adb shell wm density 380. Reboot just to be sure.
And it worked 380 looks much better

How does Twitter and Play Store look on 380?
Twitter pictures seem a bit distorted and Play Store looks perfect except the blue recommend symbol looks distorted.

I used Le DPI Changer to change it successfully

I set my dpi to 380 via adb, it's really nice that you can change that without rooting
so i now rooted my newly oneplus3, so that i can modify build.prop. i changed the ro.sf.lcd_density to 380 but nothing changes after reboot. still everything is way incredibly huge.
i tested to manually modify build.prob, changed via rom toolbox / build.prop editor, le dpi changer... nothing seem to work.
dpi checker says dpi is still 480. build.prob file is modified every time and still got that value after reboot.
any idea?
btw the non rooted method worked, so via adb, but i read its more safe to change in build.prop to prevent scaling issues on some apps...
thanks!

nm it works now. i had to do a "adb shell wm density reset" - seems once used that command its treated first and overwrites setting in build.prob.
thanks anyway =)
Anyone try Android Pay after changing the density? I know Android Pay stopped working if you changed the density from the default on the Galaxy S7.
On my Galaxy Tab S2, for example, I have set the DPI to a reduced 270, which works fine, BUT apps using the camera will have problems!
So, using a global DPI setting is not a really recommendable way.
Much better is to install Xposed (runs just fine on the OP3) and using the module "App settings" in which you can set DPI for individual apps.
Many apps look just fine with the stock DPI, while others are too "big" on the 5.5 inch display and profit from a reduced DPI. Some can even be forced to use the tablet UI with "App Settings".
380 is a really small setting. For Youtube, I would not go below 400 because text gets too small, same with Google+. Habit Browser, on the other hand, shines with 360.
And, with "App Settings", if an app doesn't work with smaller DPI, you can always set it to stock DPI, and all is working perfectly.
Just in case if someone is wondering: When you have set something in "App Settings", you have to restart the device for the settings taking effect; just restarting the app doesn't suffice on Android >5.0.
I changed my OP3 to 400 dpi without root by following this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1p5T64lLqbE
Considering that the physical dpi of the device is 401, 400 seemed appropriate, and it looks great.
I did have an issue where when a couple apps needed to request permissions for something (in my case it was Amazon Music Player requesting permissions to write to storage), after I hit accept, it would give me a warning saying "Screen Overlay Detected" prompting me to go to settings. If I didn't go to settings it would cancel my download. I tried disabling the overlay permissions of everything but that didn't help. I ended up just resetting all app permissions and then going in and granting storage to Amazon Music (and any other apps I expected needed it) in the app permissions settings, and after a restart I haven't encountered the warning since then.
Overall I'm very pleased with the adjusted dpi, and I'm disappointed that they didn't use this dpi by default (or at least provide some scaling options in display settings).

Many people reported the same issue.
To change the LCD density, you can directly edit the /build.prop file using root explorer (or any other file editor having r/w permission) or can use the tools something like rom toolbox.
Attached an example how to change lcd density using Rom Toolbox.
Thanks for the tips. One last question, do you guys have any perferred resolutions? I have been pushing 1200*720 but I feel like things are just a little too small and when the screen rotates the home screen looks fairly messed up, might just be golauncher though. Anyway, thanks again.

Just like you said, some of the launchers are not working well with high density. Even some Roms keep FC with non-standard densities.
I'm using go launcher and it's working pretty well with FC18/22 Stocked Roms.
Currently I'm under density 200 but 160 also works well.
Only one minor issue is, just few apps are not extended to full screen but that's ok to me. You may try several densities by yourself and find out which one best works for you.
[Update] I just did some test with 180 density, and it looked better than 200. All the widgets were correctly arranged on the screen and no broken widgets on go launcher. But the icon and letter sizes are too small for me, so I just keep using 200.

Hey Guys
I am just wondering how to make stock applications working with Density set to STOCK 240.
I love the 240 density but Dialer/Dock Screen/Email/Stock Apps doesn't fits properly on screen.
Anyone know how can we fix it ? or we have to wait for a ROM who supports Multi DPI ?
Thanks In Advance.

For contacts you can use Go Contacts or RocketDial. I prefer RocketDial because it much powerfull and have many many option to configurate it. Both of them works excelent at all DPI, even at tablet DPI. S Note looks ok. Other apps from Samsung\Google I'm not using and deleted them. For email I prefer AquaMail, it's working on low DPI and have many options too, like on PC email clients.

Does anyone tried to bring N2 into 213dpi? Just curious if they just passed into Jelly Bean something like NEXUS 7 "half-tablet" UI. Can someone report what stops working on 213? I know apps might look bad, but as soon their will working there will be matter of time when somebody will just mod them. But what will FC?
I am still on N1 i know what does not work on 213 N1 ICS - but N2 will be here in about 2 weeks so already curious.

Anyone tried 213 or 160 ?
hi, I used rom tool box to changed dpi. then I fix the market permanently( still work when google play update) whith LCD Density Modder Pro. well.
with some hour to use this density. I can see some app don' fit nice(camera, phone, calculator, clock and multi window) all this application can be changed with some google play app, but the camera is really bad to lost it. ( Spen and all other thing work great with a new dpi)
then I try camera fx, very buggy with it. later camera didn't work. "echec appareil photo". I tried everything( factory reset, wipe all, format all) still failled to launch camera with stock and all other app.
Since I changed the note 2 in my store with an other.
I break the camera on the device but what is the reason????
density? camera fx? hardware problem?
Still want to change the dpi (so better) but I don't want to break the camera again and I am not really sure what is the probem...
need help

already did. the camera is defenitly broken on the first galaxy note 2. And other camera app are bad compared to the stock.
does it possible to modded the stock camera app for other density? If yes, what need to change in the apk?

Any info on it ? As Samsung is still thinking about the full documentation release , It seems PA will take ages to out...
I can confirm that neither 213 or 160 gives you full "half-tablet" mode for all apps. Camera looks messed up.
On 160 SystemUI crashes and the lockscreen look changed (time and date to the left instead of centered). SMS does not have "half-tablet" mode but the settings menu does. Google Chrome has got tabs. Didn't check calendar but I assume it's "half-tableteted".
On 213 SystemUI does not crash. Lockscreen looks like default one (centered). SMS does not have "half-tablet" mode, niether does the settings menu or Chrome. Didn't check calendar but I assume it's not "half-tableteted".
Conclusion, only way to get to "half-tablet" mode right now is to go 160 DPI and then everything's really small and SystemUI crashes :/
To decrease T3's screen dpi.... Just head over to build.props can b found in root system.... Edit the build.props by adding a line at the end, type "ro.sf.lcd_density=280"
320 is the stock value
I found 280 is looking best...
Try..
Make sure to make a backup of ur build.props first

If you want to use it on single apps you can do it (root required) by installing xposed framework and downloading the module xposed app settings.

I have rooted my OnePlus 3 and I changed the dpi of the screen to 420. There's a couple of apps though that I need to keep at default because the don't look right. I know app settings from xposed is meant to change apps separately but for the life of me I can't get it to work on it doesn't matter what values I change nothing happens can anyone help?
I have no issues using App Settings Xposed module ... It works as intended.
Simple procedure:
- select the problematic app (in App settings)
- set DPI to 480
- tap "save" button
- restart device
Sent from my OnePlus 3 using Tapatalk
Yes, the device needs to be restarted after setting something in App Settings, otherwise nothing happens. This is normal behavior since Android Lollipop.
I've done that multiple times. I've changed the dpi to 480 restarted the phone and its still looks messed up. I changed the dpi using terminal so I've set everything to 420 but there's 2 apps I want to keep at default. It won't work. Is there any other way?
The app in question is in red. Should it be in red? This is my first rooting of an android device so it's all new. Thanks for the help guys.
This is the settings I'm trying to use.
Yes, it should be red if it has modified setting.
I noticed one difference between your and my procedure - you changed DPI via terminal, I did it via build.prop edit.
Try setting the DPI back to 480 in terminal and edit the build.prop to get your desired DPI, then fix apps in App Settings.

One of my most anticipated Android nougat features (please come sooner) is the scaling option in display settings.
And because I find the dpi in the p2 to be too big and I don't have poor eye sight I need it more compact to fit as much as possible into the screen.
So How do I change dpi to something like 400 dpi and would there be any bugs in doing so ?
Non_root method would be appreciated since I haven't OEM unlocked yet maybe I don't plan to
i have seen many people discussed about it, they changed DPI in ADB terminal by using some command, they reported of no problems
Method for changing the dpi, no root required!
Enable USB debugging in developer settings.
Connect the phone via USB to pc.
Start adb and find the phone:
Code:
adb devices
Then enter the command:
Code:
adb shell wm density 400 && adb reboot
Assuming you said you want the dpi of 400, if anyone is looking for a different dpi just change the value.
The phone will reboot.
Enjoy your new smaller dpi.
Profit.
