If you turn of the 'adaptive brightness' and put the brightness very near the bottom - I find that gray items on a black background almost disappear. It's like the phone starts to lose contrast at low brightnesses. Other text is really easy to read, but the gray text is impossible to see.
Also when you scroll the items have a really obvious blue trail, and it's very distracting. Any one else having this issue?
Here's a screenshot to show the issue. Worth downloading and putting full screen to see the issue http://i.imgur.com/GYHcDQG.png
I feel like if there are other people having this issue, this is a big problem with how the OP3 manages brightness.

Aha, yeah, that's possible.
But in a dark room with adaptive brightness on - the phone goes to that setting by default. Which is a design flaw. And the blue trails still happen at higher brightnesses.
Are you trolling? If it's an issue with the screen it's obviously not going to be visible in a screenshot.
there is another strange issue with me too, when auto brightness is ON and in dark environment the brightness goes up by itself while playing with HOME SCREEN and when u lock the screen and on it again it goes normal but than again after few second in home screen the brightness goes up

Hello all,
I'm just curious as to how this feature is supposed to work. I have my device set to automatically adjust while it's on medium brightness and I've noticed that the brightness jumps from low to medium frequently, especially when I'm on just one page.

I believe it just counts the number of white pixels on the screen on the omnia. this is why it jumps so much. The only way to prevent the jumping is to set the birghtness on low, with the auto setting off. Even on medium or high it jumps when the page has a certain % of white pixels. Like for opening the browser its really annoying however on low brightness the colours are really nice and its just perfect for me. Its just too bright on med or high brightness for my preferences.
But the way how the "feature" itself work I have no clue. Maybe a light sensor. But the jumpiness is caused by the number of white pixels on the amoled screens, and occurs only on samsung devices I believe.

Thanks for that explanation, Marvin
So the Lumia 900 dims the screen based on white pixel percentage (for battery) like the Focus and Focus S. Is there an extra settings option to disable this like on the Focus S?
What I'm asking is if there is an 'Extra Settings' category in the settings menu with a field called auto display intensity (like on the Focus S). Thanks.
I'm not seeing it. Today starts my 30-day trial to see if it can pull me away from my investment into Android and my HTC Desire..
I think you can just turn off the Auto brightness. There are no other display settings like on the Samsung WP7's

Yeah, the screen looks a little dim on the auto setting. Someone said that is the way AMOLED screens are. When you disable the auto and change the setting to high, it looks great. I just wonder what the effect on the battery life will be.
I recommend disabling auto-brightness and setting to medium. I personally use low indoors and medium outside. Auto-brightness should be off to save power.
The original poster is correct. Even on Bright with auto turned off, the message area is grey'ish, but white everywhere else seems fine. I went and tested it with the Focus Flash, and it had the same behavior, except when you turn off the "auto display intensity" (or words to that effect) it goes white. I think the Nokia has the exact same behavior, except that we don't have a control to turn it off. I'm keeping my screen on bright to alleviate this, and I know it's hurting the battery to do so.

Auto brightness = dims based only on the ambient light sensor. Auto display intensity = dims based on % of white pixels on the screen.

Do you know of a way to switch the Auto Display Intensity?
Is there a fix to this? I got my Lumia today and when I opened the browser and loaded Google it seemed very dim. Even if you change the background of the phone to white instead of black, it looks almost grey and dimmer than some of the other whites on the phone. Is it a bug? Should I replace the phone for another one, or are they all like this?

"Feature" not a bug. Samsung presumably provides Nokia the AMOLED panel which has it programmed into the firmware. Samsung modified WP7 on the Focus S to let you disable it.
Auto Brightness is meant to work in a way that when an external light source is there the screen will go bright and with the source gone it will be normal. I was just testing mine with my backup phone's (a cheap Samsung, which has a LED torch) torch and each time I put it near the Note 2's sensor (about 6" distance) the screen goes up very bright, that's okay, but the problem is when I turn off the torch the brightness stays the same, i.e very high, it won't go back to normal unless I press the Power button to turn the screen off and re-press it to awake the phone. But it kinda works when I am browsing net on it having my room light on, and then it goes back to normal, or dims out when I turn off the light. But the issue is occurring when I am placing the torch near it's sensor.
Have any one of you tested it. Is it normal?
TIA.

I have the same issue especially after the new update I don't know is this a problem in sensor or software?
AW: Does your 'Auto Brightness' work perfectly?
I just tested it while reading this and my screen dimmed immediately after turning off the light.
Android 4.1.2 (DMB2)

My autobrightness
My autobrigtness is slow to adapt, in some cases, when i go out on direct sunlight i have to wait almos 10 or 15 secs to become brighter.
I think that with older firmwares was faster...
Anyone observed, even with auto brightness mode, when you move the brightness bar from low to high the brightness increases a bit.
So, if I have the brightness in Auto mode and put the marker in high end, does it mean the brightness will be set with a value greater than normal-auto brightness for all lighting conditions?

Exactly.
Love the marker to be honest. Something that annoyed me about my Nexus 7. Sure, there might be third party apps to set that, but so awesome to have it out of the box.
My auto brightness doesn't work perfectly, but I still give it an A for working correctly about 90% of the time. It is also the best device compared to many others I've had where auto brightness was basically a joke, even nexus devices.

Works good for me most of the time, just did what you did and after around 5 seconds the screen dims itself again. Bare in mind in a brightish room it can be difficult to see the screen change its brightness as it does it rather slowly. However I tend to turn auto brightness of as it's never quite how I like it (I like 100% brightness in a well let room, on auto it seems to only go to max 80%, and 100% only when outside). With the Note's ridiculous battery life I don't find it a big deal, I am still able to mock iPhone 5 users when they are turning brightness all the way down and mobile data off etc when it gets toward the evening
Same pronlem here

Mine dims again when I lay it down on ie table or holding phone in that position (like it was laying on flat surface). When I'm holding phone in any other position it won't dim.
Tested on 2 n7100's both running stock dmb6.

I have the same issue exactly the sensor works perfect when the phone is in horizontal position if I tilt it or hold it in vertical position it doesn't dim unless I closed the screen and opened it again I don't know the solution for this weird problem?
That's so that you don't accidently change the brightness. We tend to keep hands near the area the sensor is.

Has anyone noticed this? I have auto brightness set off but the screen dins itself when the screen is white for example. I've seen an option on some android phones to adjust the screen to dave battery bit i can't find it on this phone. Is there any way of disabling this it's really annoying. I'm using cm now for this reason only but I would like to use stock but the dimming annoys me too much.

I believe this is a feature to protect your eyes. If auto-brightness is off and it dims on a white screen it's because that amount of brightness can strain your eyes.
With adaptive brightness on my screen frequently (every 20 seconds or so) changes brightness slightly even when the ambient light isn't changing. It's very annoying when reading and most noticeable with light backgrounds.
Is this a common issue or does it sound like I have a defective sensor?

Same here.
So annoying I had to turn adaptive off.
Seems to be when I move, probably changing sensor and it's too sensitive. My head mush change/reflect light on sensor
Anyway it's so distracting that I can't use adaptive brightness, except when pitch dark I can set to 0% adaptive to have lowest light output

Yep, reminds me of a disco strobe light!
No issues here. I actually think the brightness swing is much better than the OG Pixel XL. I can just leave the setting at 50%. On the OG XL I'd have to turn the brightness down in the living room with lighting from 1 lamp and a tv because it'd be burning my retinas.
I installed Lux Dash and disabled "adaptive brightness" and let Lux handle it. You can go into the profile editor for Lux and setup different presets for different levels of light, you can also adjust the min and max allowed brightness and even setup how you want it to adjust brightness (fade, only set on unlock, dynamic, etc)
It has really made this screen amazing and even helps with battery because most the day my screen doesn't go above 15-20%

I've been fine here with the Adaptive Brightness too. Doesn't change too often at all for me.

I installed Lux also and that did the trick. I assume the sensor is fine since Lux uses it with no problem. It's odd that some of us are having problems and others aren't but it doesn't seem to be a sensor issue.

I'm curious but how exactly is it reacting for you? Are you just sitting in bed with the lights on and it's still adjusting up and down the brightness? Cause that's what I'm doing right now and it hasn't fluctuated at all. If I put it on the bedside table it'll brighten up and when I pick it up it dims but that's it.
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
Yeah that's too much fluctuations don't you think I mean on my iPhone x or any other iPhone that I have have used so far I never could tell that the adaptive brightness was on but this device does it in an obvious way and way too frequently that im not sure anymore if this is what it's supposed to do I chatted with a Google agent and they forced quit ambient service thing from system apps and I think that still didn't resolve the issue. I will pop up in a vz store tomorrow and check out if their display devices are doing the same

I'm curious to hear what the tell you. Lux has helped me a lot bit I still notice it. To be fair I think I only notice in a dim or dark room with the TV on but this is the first phone I've used where it's noticeable to me. I'm also wondering if this is how it's supposed to work or if there's something wrong with my phone.

What I described was too much? Sounds appropriate to me. If there's extra light on the phone, I want it to get brighter. If that light goes away, I want it to get dimmer. Now if it was happening with no light changing then I would be annoyed. I keep it at 29% with Adaptive Brightness on and it's not too dark in outside light and not too bright in pitch dark.
Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using Tapatalk
I'm having the same issue. I'm on my second Pixel 2 XL so I don't think it's a sensor problem. I only notice it in lower lighting but it's really annoying when it happens. Haven't seen this issue on any other phone. Im trying out Lux now and set it to only adjust when waking up. There were similar issues when Lux was set to Dynamic.
Ever since Google thought they knew better than everyone else and got rid of auto brightness for adaptive brightness, it's been trash for me. I CONSTANTLY have to raise it in dark rooms and lower it in bright rooms. AKA, I might as well turn it off because I'm manually adjusting it every time anyway.
All in all, it's terrible.

You know Adaptive Brightness is a mix of manual and auto brightness right? I remember auto brightness actually having the issues you're describing because there was no way to adjust it if it was set. If you have Adaptive Brightness on high enough, it should be bright enough in dark and bright situations. I believe people's issues are that it adjusts too often or the opposite, it's too dark in light rooms and too bright in dark rooms.

Yeah I know it's supposed to be a mix somewhat. It's supposed to match the setting you set to whatever the surrounding brightness is relative to your brightness setting.
That's exactly WHY it's trash in my opinion though. It's a flawed methodology. I don't want it matching my setting relative to anything. I want it low in the dark and bright in bright rooms or the sun to be legible and not more. It tries to do some meet-you-in-the-middle garbage and it just doesn't work well.

I found the threshold for the lowest brightness in pitch dark with Adaptive Brightness on to be 29%. That should be dark enough in dark rooms and outdoors it's readable to me. What percentages have you been trying?
Mines doing the same thing. Did anyone work out whether it was hardware?
I used a sensor app to see what light was reporting, and it was stable. I can only assume it's a bug.
For those who aren't sure - if the screen is on, and not moving, without any changes to ambient or direct light, every 20 or so seconds the screen will dim to a warmer colour, and then 20 seconds later will brighten to a whiter colour.

Yeah I had a feeling that's what people might be experiencing.
To add on to this thread, this is also occuring on my gen 1 Pixel.
Ever since I upgraded to 8.1 the adaptive display will brighten/darken while the phone is sitting still in a constantly lit room.
I also appear to have lost much of the granularity in the brightness selecting bar. The first 25% or so is as dim as it goes, and only after that does it begin to alter the brightness. Previously it would begin around 10% on the bar.
Additionally, the logic behind adaptive brightness seems to have gotten worse. I previously left my brightness setting always in the same place, and no matter where I was it was either dim enough (at night) or bright enough (during the day).
Real unhappy with this update.
