Been playing with my new phone and love it but man is the auto brightness a piece of crap. It sets the backlight so low you get weird banding on solid colors and off whites. Just turn brightness to 30% or so and boom its a whole different screen, colors pop and I don't notice any banding. Whites are great too.
They need to fix this fast since it comes with auto brightness on and its going to give people a bad impression.

That's the first thing I did.
auto-brightness is always a little too aggressive for my liking..
It was a problem with the Nexus S as well. Drove me nuts.
Seems AOSP roms are very aggressive with dimming.

known issue. Manufacturers tend to be really aggressive with this so you can get better battery life (yea I know.. pointless right?)
Just wait for custom ROMs. Or go download paulobrien's tweak for the automatic brightness settings. (of course, as others have said, you can just turn it off)
auto brightness has always sucked on Android, iOS has a customizable auto brightness that adjust to the level you put it on initially, where as on Android there's no option to adjust the default brightness when auto brightness is enabled.

Not just iOS, even my 3 year old Nokia allows you to adjust the level of auto brightness. Wish this is native to Android. I found my Nexus One too dim on auto brightness too.

The auto-brightness doesn't just seem too low to me but also buggy. Most of the time it's really dim, but occasionally it will suddenly shoot up to a decent level

I find it too bright.. the display is perfectly usable on minimum brightness in a normally lit room bit it keeps winding the brightness up, draining the battery. It seems stuck on about 50%.
My Nexus S did the same thing.. Drove me nuts. I had to switch it off and force it to minimum half the time.
Hopefully the ability to tweak the levels in detail will be ported over from CM7 later. For now, you can use PaulOBrien's kernel where he adjusted it.

Same here, with my Nexus S, too bright.
This is one of the first things I do when flashing a rom on my incredible. They usually have to ramp down the brightness very quickly, probably for battery life. Cm has the tool hopefully it will be loaded soon.

It would be nice if google added an option to set the max and min brightness used during auto. You could just raise floor a little.

Problem I've realized is on SAMOLED devices the screen is an absolute battery killer so there's no wonder they are aggressively keeping it dim. I bet if you ran this phone at 100% brightness just sitting idle it'd last like 10 mins
Using stock 4.0.1 here, and have always had the brightness set to auto. But it never seems to do anything? If I am in a light or dark room it is always dark, often darker than the lowest brightness setting.
I am just worried that the sensor might not be working, if the phone needs to be sent back it needs to be done soon. Anyone else with this issue? I know the sensor that turns off the phone screen when in call works, but the auto brightness might use a different one.

Auto brightness is just simply low on this device. There are some hacks in the dev section to increase it...but they don't work on my ROM.
I just started using juicedefender to adjust the auto birghtness
So auto brightness itself is broken and sensor is pry OK? I wonder if there are any apps to test it.

Simply put a bright light to it and watch the screen brighten up. The sensor is fine.. auto brightness simply is a little too conservative, probably because more people would moan about battery life than screen brightness.
My auto brightness works just fine. Sometimes I have to the screen off then on for it to adjust. Other than that, the levels are fine. I'm on 4.0.3.

So the Lumia 900 dims the screen based on white pixel percentage (for battery) like the Focus and Focus S. Is there an extra settings option to disable this like on the Focus S?
What I'm asking is if there is an 'Extra Settings' category in the settings menu with a field called auto display intensity (like on the Focus S). Thanks.
I'm not seeing it. Today starts my 30-day trial to see if it can pull me away from my investment into Android and my HTC Desire..
I think you can just turn off the Auto brightness. There are no other display settings like on the Samsung WP7's

Yeah, the screen looks a little dim on the auto setting. Someone said that is the way AMOLED screens are. When you disable the auto and change the setting to high, it looks great. I just wonder what the effect on the battery life will be.
I recommend disabling auto-brightness and setting to medium. I personally use low indoors and medium outside. Auto-brightness should be off to save power.
The original poster is correct. Even on Bright with auto turned off, the message area is grey'ish, but white everywhere else seems fine. I went and tested it with the Focus Flash, and it had the same behavior, except when you turn off the "auto display intensity" (or words to that effect) it goes white. I think the Nokia has the exact same behavior, except that we don't have a control to turn it off. I'm keeping my screen on bright to alleviate this, and I know it's hurting the battery to do so.

Auto brightness = dims based only on the ambient light sensor. Auto display intensity = dims based on % of white pixels on the screen.

Do you know of a way to switch the Auto Display Intensity?
Is there a fix to this? I got my Lumia today and when I opened the browser and loaded Google it seemed very dim. Even if you change the background of the phone to white instead of black, it looks almost grey and dimmer than some of the other whites on the phone. Is it a bug? Should I replace the phone for another one, or are they all like this?

"Feature" not a bug. Samsung presumably provides Nokia the AMOLED panel which has it programmed into the firmware. Samsung modified WP7 on the Focus S to let you disable it.
Has anyone noticed that their auto brightness is kind of broken after upgrading to JB? For example, if I'm in a really bright area and go into dark, the screen does not dim itself, however this can be fixed by going into settings and un-checking and checking the auto brightness box.
Obviously this is pretty annoying... Is there a fix for this?

I've noticed the same. It stays bright a lot of the time in dark places. I haven't noticed it staying dim in sunlight though.
To me, the way it was before seemed broken. It would constantly change its brightness level. This was effected by the light reflected off clothing, etc

But I Dont find any issue with it either. In fact, if you dig in, you'll find the process consumes 30% lesser battery than before ie. Screen + sensor timing and refresh for both...

I'm actually pretty sure this is the default behaviour for ICS as well its only 3rd party roms that added in the ability to auto dim as well as auto bright the stock way is it only goes dimmer if the screen turns off and back on other wise it stays at the maximum brightness
Sometimes if I'm using the widget to move from full to auto brightness and tap very fast, it'll sit at full brightness. If I toggle slower its fine. Definitely some bug there.
I think auto brightness is much better in 4.1.1. Before it was far too dim, now it seems just right in all conditions.
I'm using the app "Lux Auto Brightness" and it couldn't be doing a better job.
Definitely check it out if you're unhappy like I was with the stock auto-brightness

that has been the default behaviour from ages for stock goole rom:
the autobrightness only can increase...it doesn't decrease, unless u lock and ulock the phone or check and uncheck autobrightness
that the intended behaviour google want..the brightness get increased, but not decrease..

Yes, it delayed the lock screen and when I set my phone down under a bright lamp and it woke up hours later in pure darkness, it might soft reset.
happens to me as well on stock 4.1.1. if I'm in a dark room and put the phone under a lamp or something, the brightness goes up instantly, but it never comes down until I lock/unlock the screen again.
in fact most of the time I think the thing is too bright (but that may be because I come from a nexus one always on the lowest setting since the autobrightness there didnt really work well).
it's a minor annoyance definitely

found this thread during my search for this brightness issue. My Galaxy Note 2 has the same strange behavior. But I figured out something: when I lay down the device to a table or bring it to 0 degrees in my hand, automatic brightness it's decreasing perfectly! Can you confirm this behaviour at your nexus? I guess it's a kind of strange Samsung " feature", maybe?

Ahoy, I was also researching my auto brightness issues when I found this thread. I can confirm the behavior from the previous post on my SGS2 on Jelly Bean 4.1.2.
If the phone is in vertical position and I do the lamp test, it will stay on maximum brightness no matter what, but in horizontal position dimming works perfectly.

Hi everyone. I haven't seen the related kinds of thread so I decided to post it. My device model is G3223.
tl;dr: It's too bright at minimum brightness during nighttime.
So during daytime the screen looks perfectly fine, no problem reading under the sunlight. But when night comes the problem arises because the phone can't go dimer, which means that the phone is still quite bright compare to my other devices when I am trying to read in bed even though the brightness is set at minimum.
Does anyone also facing this issue? Or if it's device model related?
I have the G3221 and I have the same issues. But I found 2 solutions to the problem. (well kind of) if you disable automatic brightness ? setting it will be way too bright. After enabling the auto brightness you can lower it even further. But if it still feels too bright, you can change the white balance settings to 255 which will lower the brightness even further without actually affecting anything. I hope it helps a little. ?

Problem solved. Thanks a lot. I don't know why Sony doesn't allow us to change the brightness to the real minimum point without using automatic brightness.
For white balance I set my phone to a warm colour. For (255,255,255) [r,g,b] the screen looks too cold though, and it can also lower the brightness. I am currently using (255,147,0) so it's at least better than the original setting (0,0,0)
Speaking of warm tones, sony also hides the blue light filter in the actions section which is almost invisible and many people don't even go there. You cannot enable it otherwise. They need work on their stuff.
You can use the Twilight app to use the phone at night without stressing your eyes. It works for me when I'm reading things. ?
And of course you can use this to lower the intensity of the screen's light if not the overall brightness.

Thanks for your advice. As far as I know, apps such as twilight only draw an overlay on the screen, which means it actually doesn't affect the brightness in any ways. It just seems to be darker.
In contrast, decron04's solution can actually decrease the brightness. Don't know why Sony doesn't allow users to minimize brightness without using auto brightness.
