Help Needed - I bricked my phone - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys,
I'm so upset. After several years with a stock GB rom (because I was scared of flashing), I've finally attempted to install a custom rom... And it didn't work as expected...
1) My phone was already rooted with DoomLord. for a long time.
2) I unlocked my bootloader and it worked fine. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662199)
3) I flashed the custom Kernel with Lupus GB v12 and it worked fine (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2054512)
4) I tried to flash with a custom rom, but couldn't. Here's why :
I put my custom rom zip file on my sdcard through windows explorer. But when I go to recovery TWRP and try to find my zip file on the sdcard, I cannot select it, because TWRP is "unable to mound /sdcard". I don't know why. The sdcard is fine, it should be able to read it.
So I have access to TWRP and recovery, but no access to the sdcard, so no possibility to install my custom rom... And I have no rom installed as I wiped everything according to the tutorial...
And as I'm a noob and all the explanations I can find are wayyyyy too technical for me, I'm basically stuck without any phone.
I know that this forum has not been too lively lately, but PLEASE, if you've read this , help me...
Thanks a lot,
Regards,

I had the same issue with my Samsung galaxy s3 with twrp but what I did was I changed My custom recovery to philztouch and I did flash without any problem. Maybe try searching for a another custom recovery because I wasn't able to fix mount error problem with TWRP.

Hello Podiwadda,
Thanks for your answer.
So if I understand clearly, TWRP is my custom recovery that I got with Lupus kernel, right ?
So if I change my kernel, I change my custom recovery ?
Thus, I guess I should try DoomLord's DoomKernel in order to get another custom recovery ?
Shall I use Fastboot to flash with Doomkernel over Lupus kernel ? No risk in doing that ?
Sorry for these questions, but coming from Symbian which was quite easy and straightforward in terms of flashing, Android is sooooo complex and confusing (with root, bootloader, C-kernel, recovery, C-rom, etc...).

yes you flash the kernel in fastboot mode with flashtools or adb, usually there's no risk in that.
i would try to format the sd card directly from recovery. i think ntfs filesystem doesn't work though so check that also, format it to fat or ext from your pc..you're just a few step from booting

If you have Lupus GB12 kernel still flashed, you could try to flash rom from clockworkmod recovery. Just tap vol- when booting phone (TWRP is on vol+ button, right?)
SD card should be formated in fat32. NTFS or Ext partitiions doesn't work

Hey guys, thanks for your support.
1) I tried with TWRP (through Lupus kernel) -> Cannot mount sdcard.
2) I tried with CWM recovery (through Lupus kernel) -> Cannot mount sdcard.
3) I changed the sdcard and retried in FAT -> Cannot mount sdcard.
4) I formated the sdcard in FAT32 and retried -> Cannot mount sdcard.
So the problem is not the sdcard, and not the recovery mode apparently.
I noted one surprising thing however - CWM recovery told me that my phone was NOT rooted when I tried to exit. But I'm sure it was before (I've done it many months ago with Doomlord, in order to use Link2sd).
- So, could it be the reason why I cannot mount the sdcard ?
- Is it possible that unlocking my bootloader and flashing with Lupus kernel somehow unrooted my phone ???
- Anyway way to check if my phone is still rooted through TWRP or CWM recovery ?
Thanks again,

I can't understand why it is not working either, but you colud try to do things from start:
-flash .any .62+ firmware with flashtool (return to stock)
-boot phone into that stock firmware and check is sdcard is recognized (format if needed)
-check if computer see sdcard (in storage (MSC) mode, not in MTP mode)
-copy your rom to sdcard (if you formated again sdcard)
-power off, enter in fastboot mode and flash Lupus GB12 kernel (with flashtool or any other ways you know)
-disconnect usb, power on and enter recovery (whatever you preffer more)
-delete system and data
-flash rom from sdcard
-reboot
PS:
Ignore CWM warning about root. It a feature for roms for locked bootloader (lupus kernel will root any rom installed). It is just few files in /system folder, so if there is no rom (because /system is deleted or it is unrooted stock rom) it will ask to root or not
PS2: maybe to try with external micro scdard reader in PC?
PS3: try another sdcard?
PS4: I must ask... You do have PHYSICAL sdcard insterted? right? Because x-play don't use emulated sdcard... (blessing of gingerbread )

-flash .any .62+ firmware with flashtool (return to stock) => Ok with R800i_4.0.2.A.0.62__1253-4437_.ftf through Flashtool
-boot phone into that stock firmware and check is sdcard is recognized (format if needed) => Yes it is recognized.
-check if computer see sdcard (in storage (MSC) mode, not in MTP mode) => Yes computer sees sdcard through MSC usb mode.
-copy your rom to sdcard (if you formated again sdcard) => Ok.
-power off, enter in fastboot mode and flash Lupus GB12 kernel (with flashtool or any other ways you know) => Ok with LuPuS_zeus_GingerBreadv12-full.IMG through fastboot and ADB package.
-disconnect usb, power on and enter recovery (whatever you preffer more) => Nok : I can enter TWRP recovery, but sdcard is still not recognized.
One interesting point though, sdcard IS recognized when I boot my phone into that stock firmware WITH Lupus kernel.
Thus, sdcard is not mounted / recognized ONLY when in recovery mode.
PS : ok.
PS2 : my sdcard is recognized with external micro scdard reader. that's how I put my C- Rom initially.
PS3 : I tried with 2 sd cards : one Nokia with 2gb in FAT then in FAT32. The other one Lexar 32gb in FAT32 (+ a partition in Ext4 for link2sd).
PS4 : yes, yes, physical sdcard. I wouldn't even know how to emulate a sdcard !
Seems that I'm stuck with stock GB then. But I'm happy my phone is not bricked and could be flashed with Flashtool. What can I do ?
- I was thinking about flashing with LuPuS_zeus_GingerBreadv12-full directly through Flashtool (and not from sdcard through recovery) if it's possible (but I need a .ftf file), hoping that the sdcard with then be recognized by the C-Rom.
- Otherwise, maybe trying with another kernel, like DoomLord's DoomKernel, or maybe even LuPuS_zeus_GingerBreadv12.5-ram.img (but I'd like to keep the 720p ability...).
Thanks for your advices !

It's more like wild guess then advice, but try:
-Delete any ext partitions on sdcard(s) and leave only fat32/fat
-Try with sideload in twrp recovery to flash rom (as i recall, it does not need sdcard) .

1) I'm using the sdcard with no ext partition - just 2gb of FAT32.
2) Nope, not working either : see the screenshot enclosed - again this f******g message "unable to mount sdcard"
Any other idea ? Meanwhile, I will try with a third sdcard - we never know...
Thanks !

Sry, i am out of ideas what could be wrong.
You could try flashing other kernels and see if any of them can access sdcar (you only need recovery) . You can easily flash bach lupus gb kernel oncev you are able to flash rom.

Thanks a lot Bakisha for your continuous support and advices.
Ah ! Ah ! Ah ! I've found the problem ! I tried with a THIRD sdcard and it worked !
With just a noname / nobrand 8gb microSD HC class 2.......... When a Lexar and Nokia sdcard failed...
So I flashed NXT rom thanks to CMW recovery (surprisingly, TWRP failed to flash my rom...).
So now I have my new NXT rom flashed and perfectly working, except that.......... It does not recognise my 32gb sdcard ((
So I believe Lupus kernel does not like my Lexar 32gb sdcard :-/ As it was working perfectly with the stock kernel and rom.
To confirm this theory, I will try another kernel.
1) In order to try another kernel, I just flash over with Fastboot and ADB Package ?
2) Which one offers similar performances to Lupus ? Do you have any suggestion ?
Again, Thanks a lot !

Just use flashtool, it's easisest (with few clicks), but yeah, if partitiion size is same, just flash over existing kernel.
You could try other kernel, just keep in mind that you'll need to wipe system and data everytime kernels have different partitions size.
Doomlord's kernel is good, but lupus is newer one. Can't say which is better, it's a matter of opinion.
Or try extreme kernel (try to find links in general section)
Or try kernels at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2637637
I am using 64GB card, so it's not about size (also cheap chinese card)
Have fun

Hi Bakisha,
So I tried to flash with Doomlord's kernel - same problem, sdcard is not recognized...
- So basically, with stock kernel and stock rom, no problem.
- With C-kernel and C-rom, sdcard is not recognized.
Now what I did is put my 32gb sdcard in my Symbian powered Nokia 808, just to check.
Interestingly, the Symbian OS told me that it cannot use this sdcard, because it is encrypted, and it is not able to remove the encryption because it does not have the key...
So here's my noob guess : somehow, my sdcard was encrypted when I was in stock GB rom.
As I totally wiped system and data in order to flash C-kernel and C-Rom, I've lost this bloody key.
So my sdcard is still encrypted and the key is lost, which would explain why it cannot be used by my flashed Xplay and my Symbian 808... It would also explain why other sdcards work properly with my flashed Xplay, while this one doesn't.
- Does that sound relevant to you ?
- Do you know how to remove the encryption for this card without the key ?
Again, thanks in advance !

Hello Bakisha,
Thanks a LOT for your help and patience.
I've finally found a solution to my problem.
I'm pretty sure the problem was the sdcard's android encryption form the beggining.
Here's what I did to solve it :
- Download MiniTool partition wizard free.
- Wipe entirely your sdcard (fill sectors with zero & one).
- Once done, format your sdcard in FAT32 through Minitool partition wizard.
- Then, format in FAT32 with Windows explorer (right click on sdcard, then format).
- (OPTIONAL) Then, go back to Minitool partition wizard and create your Ext partition for Link2sd.
After all this, my sdcard was finally recognized by Lupus kernel and the C-Rom.
Hope it will help others.

format your sd card, or insert a a new one preferable Class 4
after that
attached is the file.
Usb debug on
install it
usb debug off
restart it
open the software and boot into recovery.
hope it works.

So i installed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1040121

I can go recovery mode by pressing power + volume down
Can some1 help me what should i do?
In most circumstances it is because your sd card is not properly formatted or you have flashed the wrong data table. I think it is probably becuase of the sd card, make sure you format with a fat 32 and a ext4 partition. You can do this very easily with your recovery program or with gparted. If this fails I would flash a simple rooted rom to get the phone up and running and then read the forum. I assure you that is is not as complicated as it all seems
can some1 give me link for guide to format with a fat 32 and a ext4 partition
or simple rooted rom to i can get my phone back to work?
This is a rooted stock rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833310
Download this, put it on your sd card and flash it exactly as you flashed your previous rom, this will get the phone working again. I would then simply download and install Clockwork Mod recovery or 4ext recovery, both these will sort you sd card out. You simply want a fat32 with a 1gb ext 3 partition. Once this has been done you can then look at installing more complex roms.
If you get stuck lt me know and I will try and help, I was in the same place a year ago!!!!
Sorry, use this rooted rom as the other link requires sd ext

you can use gparted or minitool partition wizard (google the names). Most ROMs require a minimum of 512mb EXT Partition but 1GB is advisable. EXT3 is preferable, as the faster EXT4 is not compatible with all ROMS

[Q] Can't seem to install SlimBean correctly, help please?

So am trying to install SlimBean on my play, but I am having trouble getting it installed but I don't know if its that or the kernel (Turbo Kernel v3.1) which is causing the trouble. So here is a step by step of what I did;
1. As per Turbo Kernal instructions, flashed FTF in thread for 'vendor-unlocked partition layout'.
2. All fine, booted into stock rom.
3. Flashed Kernel.
4. All fine, boots kernel to welcome screen. (Note: I get the welcome screen all the time, and I don't have to press a key to get to the boot menu, this doesn't seem right to me?)
5. As per Turbo Kernel instructions I did the following - 'Enter Multiboot Menu (Vol-Down key) and go to Internal > Recovery, then format system, data and cache before doing anything else. Very important'
6. Still boots to 'Welcome' screen.
7. Entered the first slot and loaded TWRP recovery.
8. Mounted SD Card and copied SlimBean .zip to the SD Card.
9. Selected 'Install' in TWRP, selected ROM and installed fine.
10. Choose reboot.
11. Phone still boots to 'Welcome' screen.
I have tried the instructions in the Turbo Kernel thread to get rid of the boot loop, (open recovery and choose 'reboot' from there) but still can't get it to load the ROM. Not even sure if it has installed properly. I have also tried switching recovery to CWM, and installing the ROM that way, but I can't get it to mount the SD Card. I also tried the 'Repair' function in Turbo Kernel but that has no effect either.
Does anyone have any ideas where I went wrong, or how I can fix this? Thanks in advance.
Question [Q] Can't seem to install SlimBean correctly, help please?
Right now first of all I am no expert on Turbo Kernel I have used it for a few times on my play but my main phone is arc so I am using a different version of twrp.
Now looking at your instructions one thing I did different than you was never to mount or unmount SD card while in Turbo Kernel,I think CosmiDan even say's not to do this as system .img's are stored on sd card (maybe wrong)
What I used to do was take my SD card out and copy the rom to flash to my SD card with a card adapter or when phone was on via usb never while in recovery!
I would try to flash kernel again delete the system img that Turbo creates on your SD card and do as you have been doing but put Slimbean on SD card first.
Hope that helps :good:
try Clockwork mod recovery and try to install the rom then just give it TIME like 5 min or so till the slimbean logo pops up

Thanks for the reply but perhaps I'm not being clear in the OP. The phone always enters the Turbo Kernel Multiboot menu, regardless of if i press anything or not. I can't install via CWM as when i try to i get an error about not being able to mount the sd card to find the ROM file.
@tallman: Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately i don't have a compatible adapter for the card. I will try flashing the kernel again, any thoughts on why i always get the Multiboot/Welcome Screen?
EDIT: I have sorted it. Turns out I needed to partition the SD card in the recovery menu after wiping. Once I did that, USB Mounting and SD Card mounting worked just fine. Installed the ROM via CWM and it booted automatically. Thanks for the replies anyway chaps, now to go an play.

On the Mulitiboot/Welcome screen issue only thing I can comment about that is what CosmicDan mentions in is post below
Q) My device keeps going into the Boot Menu, even though I never pressed the key to enter!
A) This is a bootloader thing and is rare, to fix it just enter Recovery (for any slot) and select reboot from there.
But I think you tried that anyway Like I said I looked at your post and tried to think what I did different to what you did to get it working and as I said it was only the fact That I copied rom's to my SD card when not in recovery to be honest I transfer all my rom's that way.
Don't forget if you install again to delete the system images on your SD card that Twrp creates so that you have got fresh images and start by installing Slimbean in 1st slot
Have you tried installing Slimbean with another JB kernel then when you have it installed swap back and install Turbo Kernel
Looks like you missed my 'edit'.
I'm all sorted now. Had to partition the SD card in TWRP recovery. Slim Bean is a little disorientating, I can't seem to add my google account, but I think I need to install the add ons for it.
Thanks again.

[Q] Sd card issue (CM 10)

Hello folks,
Recently I have flashed CM 10 via CWM 6.0.3.2 on my Samsung Galaxy W. (I followed this procedure: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1990795)
Everything worked out fine (yay) exept for two issues I have:
1. My SGW doesn't recognize my Sd card (internal) at all. (though internal is mounted in cwm menu)
I have several folders regarding my sd and external sd:
- sdcard> tells me it is "unplugged" (in German> translation might differ) when I enter via file manager
- mnt/sdcard> here it tells me my sd card is unplugged as always
- storage/sdcard0> unplugged
- external_sd> it tells me sd card unplugged if I enter
- mnt/external_sd >here I can enter all of my folders
- storage/sdcard1> here I can enter again
2. My SGW can't mount my external sd anymore. I can clearly enter my external sd's files, but apparently I cannot mount my PC. Especially not with Multimount because it requests me to mount my internal sd (issue 1).
So how do I get it to work properly? - is it possible to do it via Terminal Emulator?
Specifications:
- Samsung Galaxy W
- Android Version 4.1.2.
- Kernel Version: 3.0.80-cyanogenmod-gc689589
[email protected] #1
- Cyanogenmod Version: 10-20130605- UNOFFICIAL-ancora
Thanks a lot in advance
Hi, I have similar issues with internal storage after flashing to 4.2.2 and also 4.1.2. Model is galaxy W previously 2.3.6 stock.
At root, i have
/data, which seems to be my internal storage as the FX file explorer show it has a storage of 1.07gb
/external_sd, which contains my files in micro sd card
/sdcard, which ES say SDCard unmounted
/storage, which contains sdcard0 (SDCard unmounted), sdcard1 (micro sd), usbdisk (SDCard unmounted)
In the andriod settings > storage, I can see internal storage with total space 1.07gb, but unable to mount it.
My camera and gallery says "No external storage available".
What should I do? Please help

This can be done for the SDcard you can unplug and plug directly to an other device like an PC, but not with the internal.
So better try the following. Secure your files if you can. Reboot into recovery and format there both. Rebooot into CM10 or whatever ROM you are using and change your USB operation mode from MTP to Mass Storage.

If The Internal Is The Problem Then You Must Back To The Main Software 2.x.x
Then Back To The Edited Mods And Rom's
The Internal Storage Will Work
...............................
When That Happen To Me ... That What I Have Done
Sorry For Bad English

You probably mean back to stock Samsung ROM. But how will this fix corrupted partitions? And why "must" if there are probably more simple ways to fix it rather than flashing roms forth and back?
First of all he should format both and switch to Mass Storage mode to see if this fixes his issue. Flashing ROMs still can be tryied as a last resort.

Yeah I Mean (back to stock Samsung ROM) And That This Makes The Phone Due To His Condition Also Came From Its Supplier ..
And That's Fix All Internal Storage Problem's .... By Format The Internal Storage With Force From stock Samsung ROM ...
And I Think He Can't access The Internal Storage To Format It By Him Self ...
I Have Tried That Problem Whin I Have Got My Mobile New .. I Haven't Found Solve For It , So I Have Back To The stock Samsung ROM
..
And Found Every Thing Work Fine Then I Have Back To CM Mod Again... :victory:
If You Have Another Simple Way For That Problem Tell Him ,Please ...

I think you are mixing something up. First of all he didn´t say he can´t mount / access it from CWM Recovery but from a running ROM. This is two different things so it still should be possible to access both in CWM Recovery and to do a format.
Secound. Flashing a ROM will not format the internal Storage but only the partition where the ROM will be flashed to. They are not the same, so this is also two different things. So even if you flash a ROM but are having corrupted SDcards (Internal and external) they will stay corrupted till you fix this.
And this is why I suggested to first boot into RECOVERY, format both and finally after rebooting change to Mass Storage as the MTP Mode is not always working very well. If this doesn´t help he still can flash back to stock ROM.
However now I´m just repeating what I already said before. If you can´t get it, then I´m sorry for you.

[Q] [RECOVERY] ClockworkMod Recovery [v6.0.4.8]

Hi all, I have a problem with the new CWM.
I trying to get functioned KK (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735775).
1. I have succesfully installed KK rom
2. I have succesfully installed gapps for KK rom
3. Now I want to get more internal memory using the int2ext+ script..but there is the problem..firstly I tried to install int2ext+ but when I rebooted I find out that internal memory is same as without metioned script, so I tried to install int2extV2+..again, no more space in internal memory..so I decided that there is a problem with "no partion"..I tried to find out in mentioned recovery where to partition the card, but I cannot find it, how to solve this problem please? And is necessary to reinstall rom etc. because of "non-succesfully flashed two int2ext scripts"?
Thanks

Mount on windows computer. Use Mini partition wizard. First partition Fat32 + second partion Ext4 (Both partitions must be "primary")
