720p video recording

Here is a short 1 minute video taken outside my house so you guys can see how well the recording is. keep in mind the files is compressed massively just 52 MB for 1 minute

Inside is a lot more blurry but that's expected, people were saying that it was complete crap, but i'm impressed.

Have to admit, I'm not too impressed by this camera, definitely not the quality they were making it out to be...but honestly when is it ever as good as they say it is?

I am underwhelmed as well with the Hype vs Reality. I understand the ratio is always eschew but in this case it came with a bit of surprise.
The only saving grace here would be if the bitrate can be changed by us once rooted.

Changing the bitrate would be nice. I'm personally hoping a third party app comes along that does a better job at capturing video.
At this stage, i honestly would never use 720p video capture from the EVO. It just seems kind of pointless.
Hey OP, any way you can take video at different resolutions so we can compare the difference?

Thanks! Definitely 720p looks better however the bitrate just seems low. Hope this is not hitting a hardware limit.

im sure once the developers make 3rd party apps its going to be 1000000x better but thats just my thoughts.

Doubt it. HTC and cameras have never been a good mix. Shame really, once again HTC makes a great device with a ****ty cam.

Video looks horrible. I really wish HTC would team up with either Nokia or SE and learn how to make better cameras. I would gladly pay an extra $50 for a real camera with lens cover.

Doesn't really matter to me. If I need to take high-quality pictures or videos, my phone isn't what I would plan to use. For impromptu photos and quick videos, I am sure this will be fine for me.

Hey love the magnum! i know off subject. but, i'm a fan of the maggie and lx platforn period. how's gas mileage? sxt correct?

I don't trust any of the videos I've seen yet. I will make the final determination when the phone is plugged into my tv. Also I wouldn't be surprised if you can encode video in different formats and get better/worse quality.

hey shakuyi, can you get us some stills? the frame-rate on the video is borderline worthless. 480p does seem more real-time to me. i'm interested to see what inside/outside stills look like.

We need a better video camera

So just browsing along I stumbled on this video review of the camera app. I knew our DINC's had problems with video, but WOW, is it really this bad?

i'm not sure what a dev could do to fix this. it seems that the issues with the pixel density and audio aren't something that could be overcome with patching a file from another OS or even an app...
my advice is this:
if you want a better video experience, buy a dedicated video camera or a dedicated camera with video functions. as a phone, it's a balancing act. you're not gonna get the best of ALL worlds, but including hardware and features for things like recording video in 720p is pretty handy and convenient when you're caught without a dedicated camera or video device. i wouldn't rely 100% on my phone as my primary device for anything except phone calls. but to each their own

That video showed me at least one new thing: I didn't realize that with 2.2 and 720p recording, H.264 isn't available. With H.264 selected, the highest available resolution drops to WVGA (800x480). Only H.263 and MPEG4 are available in 720p. Does anyone know if this is true on other Froyo devices, like the Nexus One? Or did something get changed when 2.2 went through HTC?
Perhaps the OP is right, I think that with a software update of some kind, H.264 for 720p could be enabled on the Droid Incredible, as well as higher bitrate audio. The OP's video suggests those two things to be major reasons as to why the camcorder quality is so different. Anyone know if Cyanogen is working on 720p H.264 as well as his continuous autofocus awesomeness?
Of course the actual optics are a bit different between the two devices as well, but I'd like to think the Droid Incredible has a better camera than those camera tests seem to show.

i'll ask my friends with other devices that are capable of 720p and see what they say, will post findings
EDIT: samsung captivate doesn't have encoding settings. we didn't record a video to see what it saved it as, either. but there is no option in the settings to change encoding, only resolution.

I have been thinking the same thing. I even posted about changing the codec but no one responded.
I was reading on the evo forum about the camera software and several posters suspected that the compression is what is making the video not as good as it could be. They also had the same thought about enabling h.264.
I would definitively pay for these features.

yeah pretty much what i was going to say

I thought XDA was about getting the most out of your device through tips, tricks, tweaks and hacks, and that it's been that way for some time. Maybe I'm mistaken.
I think trying to squeeze the best performance out of your device's camera is perfectly legit, OP.

Anyway, that's weird and seems pretty pitiful that the Captivate won't even let you change the codec setting at all. Better for user experience I suppose, not to have to mess with codecs to try to get the best picture. I'm curious what codec it defaults to. I wonder what a comparison between the Captivate and Incredible camcorder would look like.

The camera indeed has some problem on the Incredible. My incredible will flicker in low light condition even in camera mode. I had to return and exchange one, but the problem is still there just less severe.

With the power this phone possesses, the video sucks. I would not only expect it to be better, but use the latest codecs and not amr audio and save files in .3gp! What good is high def video if I can't play it on my Xbox or PS3, or other media boxes?. That's a joke. I think as long as the iPhone can do it, maybe Droid should.
I didn't buy a cell phone. I bought a multi-hundred dollar smartphone with an 8mp camera that BOASTS 720p video. If I bought a RAZR I would accept it.

[Q] Video capture quality on the G2..

All the video samples from the G2 I have seen on Youtube so far have not been impressive. Most disturbing about these videos is the sound quality, it is pretty bad. I have a Nexus One (hacked with Cyanogenmod's 720p recording feature) and it also isn't that great so I'm guessing this is a 'feature' of HTC phones. Compared to the Galaxy S (from Samsung) the HTC phones (G2, N1 and even the EVO) seem to suck in the video / audio department.
In a recent post I read that the audio codec for a HD recording off the G2 is this:
AMR (samr), Mono, 8k, 32 bits per sample
Could this be the problem and can this be changed?

AMR == Adaptive Multi-Rate Audio Codec. Dunno what the "s" in "samr" is all about tho.
I see a comparison with the nokia 8 and there is a definite sound quality difference. (Be sure to watch this in 720p)
Wonder if the sample rate is adjustable by firmware/settings or if it's set in hardware. Strangely wikipedia lists 14 modes, none of which are at the "8k" (rate?) you reported... I see AMR_7.95 tho.
Anyway, my g2 is on the way....

Idle thought- I wonder if the codec is set to a low bandwidth to accommodate slower SD card speeds. I think the g2 comes with a class 2, and this thread suggests that there is stuttering when playing back at the HD setting.

Agreed. Audio isn't stellar and playback has stuttering. In fact, I've already experienced a weird situation where the video wouldn't actually play - just showed a blank screen with the audio playing.
I love this phone, but the video / audio / picture quality on my Sprint Epic is far superior.

One more thought... This is an old issue. If you doubt the potential the video camera COULD have, take a look at this audio comparison linked from the thread. At least on the n1, the microphone is capable of way better sound than the camera app currently offers. The g2 has a faster processor-- it should be able to encode better sound.. AAC? Ogg?
Update: It's not the camera app's fault. It's Android's. There is an open issue for this. It looks like Android itself doesn't support anything better. The good news is this isn't a hardware limitation. As someone suggested, a WebM encoder seems like an obvious thing to add.

wow amazing! i really hope we can fix this issue

I just starred the issue (they look at that don't they?)... I recorded some video at a concert last night and while the video wasn't terrible, the sound is absolutely unbearable. Makes the videos pretty much worthless

I keep wondering if it's possible to stuff our own codec in there. I mean, some of the android phones have higher quality audio, right? If so, how do they do it? Why are those codecs commented out in the video camera code for...?
Doesn't cyanogenmod have FLAC support? Couldn't other codecs be added to the phone app, even if they're in java?

[Q] Does the G4 shoot 1080p at 60 fps?

I'm having a very difficult time trying to find out if the rear camera on the G4 can indeed shoot 1080p video at 60 fps? Some reviews on YouTube say that it can, while some others say that it can't. I'm wondering if maybe the preview units LG sent out to testers can't do it and maybe the actual retail units can? Could anyone with a retail unit and not one of the preview units please see if the G4 can actually shoot 1080p videos at 60 fps?

Most of the specs say 1080p at 60 fps, but so far no videos actually show it. I have seen 1 video (and only 1 video) claim to be @ 60fps but there is no proof at all it was even shot with a G4. I played with a demo unit at a store yesterday and the unit I used definitely didn't shoot at 60 fps.

I played with the AT&T version at the store and it had 1080p/60fps as an option.

Hmm interesting. I wonder if it's only an option on certain carriers right now? Do you remember what exactly what the menu options were? Was it just UHD, FHD, HD, and Slow-Mo or was there another option?

The LG G2 and G3 both have [email protected] so we can assume the G4 does as well. It needs a lot of light to shoot at 60fps otherwise the LG automatically lowers the frame rate. Not sure of the technical reasons but with my G2 I need to be outdoors on a sunny day to get 60fps. I tried last night inside in a dim room and it only recorded at 15fps even though I was on the 60fps setting. Still awaiting my g4 but it's the first thing I'm going to try.

That's a good start, although I still find it odd that this is the only LG G4 1080 60 fps video that I've seen (aside from 1 other random video that had no info at all). Especially considering how many of these they sent to youtubers to review. I'd still really like to see a screen shot of the menu actually showing the option.

I just took a short test video on my G4 and used MediaInfo software to analyse the file. it was only 30fps. I tried at both 4K and 1080p. There's no option anywhere in the camera app to choose framerate.

I can confirm that both UHD and FHD produce 30fps videos. Or that is what vlc shows when playing them back on PC.

I can confirm that the G4 can't record in 60 fps.

That guy in the video I linked still claims that it can in the comments on the video. I'm not sure if he is flat out lying or what, but he seems pretty certain.

Yea, their specs are wrong. Not for the first time.

G3 can record at 60fps via XCAM, future updates might bring 60fps but if not then probably i hope XCAM will come to G4, that would unlock all hidden potential

So with the announcement out of the way, a DXO Mark assessment complete and all the specs published I'm left wondering about video recording. The 6P recorded in 4K at 30FPS, 1080P at 30FPS and Slow Motion at 120FPS and 240FPS and without OIS it was shaky as hell. Both GSM Arena and the DXO Mark list 1080p 30/60/120FPS for the Pixels which piqued my interest.
Will we be getting 60FPS 1080p?
The image stabilisation on at the demo looked very impressive too and I believe that was at 4K but we'll have to wait and see if it's actually that good...

I forgot where I saw the spec but I did see somewhere that it does to 60fps 1080p. I'll see if I can find it.

At long last, if this is available and the stabilisation is as good as they demo'd it'll be a great camcorder.

DXO said there was still Jello effect associated with EIS with videos. I guess we'll have to wait and see what it's truly like.

It does have 60fps. It must be in the settings that you choose the frame rate. In that video provided, it's just the choice of what quality you want, not the fps.

The only thing why I didn't buy the 6P, because it was pretty stupid they didn't add this when even mid-range phone have them. On the other hand, I would love to see manual controls on the camera, because every flagship should have them and people who likes photography greatly appreciate this.

Looks good indeed, because stabilization usually doesn't work on 4K, but still we can't guarantee that the video was edited or manipulated in any way; we should wait for real reviews and camera tests, because I think is the only good thing this phone has.
