Has anyone else experienced this on the GN?
I've had this happen twice in the two weeks since I got it.
The device is stock.
The only common thread I can think of is that in both instances I had plugged the phone into my PC via the USB cable.
I only use 3 sources to charge, my PC at home, laptop at work, or wall charge overnight.
Meh, it is the Nexus (tame dev device). The S was way more unstable. Just pull the battery and all is well.
If you want to be cutting edge then you have to take the rough with the smooth.

Never happened to mine. You might have a buggy app that doesn't play well with ICS.
Thanks lads, I'm not massively concerned, and yes, it may well turn out to be a bad app, was just posting to find out if it was more "common".
I have of course just seen another thread in this same forum dealing with the same topic (funny that my post flagged up a bunch of other threads in unrelated forums), so this'll probably be closed down...
Think I'll go wade into that other thread now
I've had it twice since I got mine, wasn't plugged in both times so for me it's not down to charging.
mine reboots everytime i try to use the picture frame widget. i select the pic, then it reboots.
The day I got my phone, I had 2 SOD's.
This morning after I woke up, it was in a SOD and 2 minutes ago, the screen went off and I had to take the battery out.
Really strange
Someone have a solution?
I noticed this issue too, whether charging from the PC or the mains charger once the phone hit 100% on the battery it would turn off and could not be started without pulling the battery. I read somewhere that resetting the phone could cure this so, as much of a pain in the ass as that is, that is what I did. SO FAR this seems to have worked for me. I was charging the phone via the USB cable to the PC yesterday and no shut off and when I went to bed last night the phone was on charge all night and again when I woke this morning all seemed good. I'm not sure if this will work for everyone suffering this issue but it worked for me (for now) so thought I would share my experience.
Good luck !
This is so weird, hasn't happened to me since that day. I was able to reproduce the issue after reading another thread on battery saving. Someone mentioned limiting background processes to 3 in Developer Options, when I did this, my phone SODed within seconds. Twice!
Think I mentioned this elsewhere and someone said he used that option with no problems so it's clearly inconclusive. I'm just going to steer clear of that for now.

This has happened to me a number of times, usually when I was multitasking while listening to the Google Music app. It's a good thing that back cover is easy to pull off and put back on.
First of all I read all the possible posts here in the XDA forum about this problem but no one was able to help me :s
I was listening music with my cellphone than it crashed and turned of from nohting. My first thought was "Damm, it crashed!" and I removed the battery and after a couple minutes I put it back and than the cellphone never turned on again. No battery status is showing up, no leds, odin and flash mode doens't work either. I don't no what to do :s
I tried this:
◘ Unplug from USB, remove battery 5 min, put it back
◘ Odin and Flash mode
◘ Turn it on without battery on pc
◘ Turn it on while recharging
My GNexus model is a I9250 GSM.
Could you add some more details? How long the phone's been in operation, refurbished?, rooted?, your current ROM, kernel, radios, advanced kernel settings such as voltage changes, any tweaks, battery type, temperature.
This exactly happened to me on my DroidX. I spent 2 weeks trying everything to revive it including taking the phone apart before adding it to the pile and getting my current GNexus Toro.. so I know how much this sucks. I'm not an expert on phones bricking but I know that connections can go bad or come loose, especially if the phone has been dropped or other impact, components start to lose their integrity over time and voltage shorts 'burn out' op-amps. You mentioned listening to music, so I'm wandering about the IVA components burning out, which usually has voltage too high especially on boot... Hope you can get it working.

Well first of all I thank you for your concern and my phone is on again, thanks to my uncle. The phone is '4 months old', I rooted last month, bootloader unlocked and I was using samsung stock rom (4.2.1 JB). Yeah, that really suck monkey b*lls. If you got the same problem as me (I really hope not) that's what you should do: First remove the battery, plug the charger and than put the battery back. In my case, It kind "shorted" the battery and my phone is back on. I was reading posts and posts and discovered that GNexus has this problem and a lot. Dunno when it can happen again but I really don't want a paperweight. Once again, thank you!
Glad you got your Nexus back up and runnning. Thanks for posting back with details after you figured out the problem and got your phone working, +1 right there. There's always a good chance this will help out someone later on. :good:
Confirmation: balums worked for me
balums uncle's solution worked for me: specifically, (1) removed USB power, (2) removed battery, (3) applied USB power, (4) inserted battery, (5) press power button.
Thanks balums!
Does anybody have technical (design/EE) insight into what would cause this?
This was starting from a device that appeared totally dead.
The battery was *fully charged* (and showed up that way immediately when the device finally booted).
I had done the obvious things of removing/inserting the battery, cleaning contacts, checking the USB power connection.
Was about to pull it apart when I saw balums post, saving me huge time.
Device is about 16 months old. Stock OS and settings. First time this has happened.
Search terms:
CDMA (Verizon) Samsung Galaxy Nexus -- SCH-i515.
Phone won't boot. Device won't turn on. Won't start. Dead. No worky.
Thanks,
Seth
Awesome! You trick worked, balums!
Interestingly I also have the standard stock version of OS and Hardware which I bought 14 Months ago (nearly to the day). I was surfing over WiFi yesterday evening and when I turned the phone off I noticed the screen getting grey for a moment, not black. And this morning the Nexus just didn't turn on.
Anyway, thanks for the solution, have a nice day!
That is very odd because my i515 also did the exact same thing and I have owned it for 15 months. I can't wait to get home and try this trick. More to come.
Drew
Thanks!

Hey Balums,
My GNex didn't turn on this morning and I was really confused as to why it would do such a thing, until I saw your post. Thanks a lot for posting your uncle's remedy!

bookmarked. thanks op.
Galaxy nexus wont turn on or charge.
I tried (1) removed USB power, (2) removed battery, (3) applied USB power, (4) inserted battery, (5) press power button but my galaxy nexus still dont turn on. i have 4.2.2 stock rooted. i was downloading something and my screen become weird in colors and i cent use the phone. i turn it of and now wont turn on again or charge.
after unlocking and rooting i installed this touch recovery from google play. [ROOT]Recovery Tools
Excellent! balums' suggestion helped me. I thought I had tried this before but apparently didn't quite get this in the right sequence.
The only remaining issue I have now is that when it does turn on, I've got the thunderbolt on the battery indicator, the phone says it's charging at the lock screen, but when I go to Battery under Settings it says that the battery is discharging. This effectively has my phone in a state where I can't unplug it (battery is too low but it also doesn't appear to actually "charge"). I tried replacing the Micro USB charge port PCB board and came up with the same results. To me, this seems like a problem and may indicate a motherboard or battery connection issue. I used the "Battery Monitor Widget" and it indicated that it was getting AC power. Any thoughts?
Thanks to XDA and Balum's suggestion! I thought my phone just died! It was on 70somethign % battery last I looked, connected by USB to the PC and I don't know if I turned it off and walked away for a while or if it turned off by itself, but it would not turn on no matter what I did after I got back to my desk. It is on Android 4.3 takju stock not rooted.
Thank you all again for the instructions on how to revive the GNex!
Samsung Galaxy Nexus won't power up
I got a Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I got it from my cousin and therefore don't have any information about the rooting status as well as the ROM but i guess it was running stock. The phone won't turn ON, it is not detected in the computer. No LED or any other indication. I tried the above method which worked for many people but it failed. What is special about the phone is that the upper part of the screen is heating up more as compared to the rest of the phone. Can somebody help me fix this? Is this a hardware issue?
I have the EXACT same problem as you do. I have no idea where to start to try to fix it. I took a picture, then lines went squiggly across the screen, then it flickered, and died. I cannot power it on at all. I tried Uncle's tricks. No luck.
Anyone have some ideas on what to try? Thanks.

Also having the same problem. My Nexus has been rebooting randomly for the past week or so, and finally, this morning, it refuses to turn on at all.
It's a Verizon Galaxy Nexus running stock, but it's been rooted. I'm using the extended battery. The trick that was posted earlier in this thread doesn't seem to work for me. I've tried multiple USB cables and power sources.
I'm going to try the standard battery when I get home, but I'm not expecting positive results.
Work-around
About two months ago whenever I turned my Gnex off, it became totally unresponsive to all attempts to start again. After a lot of trial and error, I discovered that if I pulled the battery for 30-60 minutes and reinstalled, it would power on normally. I have completely wiped and rooted the phone and the problem persisted.
Today I thought about it some and realized there may be some residual charge in the phone, and my waiting period is to allow the charge to drain. To test this theory, I powered the phone down and then tried to restart - nada. Pulled and reset the battery - nada. Pulled the battery, shorted out all four pins that would make contact with the battery, reinstalled battery, and it powered right up. I have not been able to successfully repeat a fast restart when shorting out all four pins. Pulling the battery and waiting 30-60 mins still works.
Incidently about the same time, my screen has stopped auto rotating (and yes it is set to do so).

galaxy nexus reboot
my galaxy nexus is about 1 year old now and this is the first time that i've encountered a problem with it. It suddenly restarted, and will take about 5-7minutes before it opens, it will be open up to the "X" logo and when it reaches the normal screen it will restart again. I don't know whats wrong with it. please help/

Similar problem + water
Ok, so I have a similar situation I believe. My phone took a swim. I left it off and riced it. Later on after I believed it to be dry enough, i turned it on. (wow it freaking worked) After a few seconds of using the device checking screen the phone snapped off and went into a reboot. I waited until it came back and i shut it down and thought I'd let it go over night. I plugged it in and let it charge (charge icon was displaying). Everything looked good.
Fast forward. Morning time. I go to turn the phone on. Nothing.
This time the phone won't boot. Instead all i see is the white battery icon show up indicating the battery is 100%. When i plug it in to the charger i get the battery with the charging bolt, then it shows the normal battery indicator light. After that, I get nothing.
I tried the method I saw above. remove power, remove battery, apply usb power, insert battery, press power. Sadly it didn't work.
Anyone have any other ideas as to what might be going on?
I had the problem of ghost charging, it started with phone not charging when connected to charger and then randomly showing charging(even when not plugged in i.e. ghost charging) .
After seeing other thread, i cleaned the port with paper and tooth pick and also pushed the inner tongue slightly upwards and now it doesn't show charging icon, but it says not charging in settings>battery, instead of discharging
It causes vbus_tuna_otg wake lock in Bette battery stats and high system usage in setting> battery, basically not letting the phone go to deep sleep, causing battery drain.
Have tried multiple roms and stock, etc all give same behaviour so definately h/w problem and also have two batteries and both do the same thing.
Any way to fix this. ?
Any help appreciated.

Did you ever get it fixed, I also have the same problem I have been searching and searching and I can't find a solution. I have tried a new battery, resetting the phone to stock, cleaning the usb port, replacing the usb port, taking the phone apart and cleaning it, greenified a lot of apps and the phone still does it. I just ordered another usb port in case the first one I bought was defective. I have bbs and vbus-tuna_otg is the main kernel wakelock killing my battery. Hopefully someone can help us seeing as this is a Google flagship phone.
My phone is a Verizon 32GB Galaxy Nexus running CM 10.1.3
Have tried the same as you. Changed port and battery and problem still persists. It's probably a board thing and needs a board replacement. I ll just have to live with it. I have the GSM version. I wonder if there is any way of disabling the service /process that creates the wakelock...

Hi,
I have developed an open-souce (GPLv3) app that helps save battery when this happens.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2484871
SnooZy Charger turns off the screen on these ghost connections, saving battery consumption by the display. It does not fix the charging issues, but it reduces the battery drain when this happens.

ps: sorry if this is considered as self promotion or xposting but this issue has been reported on multiple threads..

Same thing happened to me two nights ago.
I had to recharge the battery for a few minutes before I could re-start it.
Did you have the watch on when you went to bed?
I didn't experience the problem last night, so I'm assuming it may have something to do with the way I slept. I may have inadvertently kept touching the watch screen against my body, causing the watch to be woken and draining the battery. However, I've had the watch for nearly a month now and I always sleep with it on and never had the problem until couple of days ago, so it could be some sort of bug. Anyway, the Android Wear OS 5.1.1 should be here soon, so we'll see if the situation occurs again or not.
I always sleep without the watch, i just put it on the table near the bed

OK. Thanks for the reply. It seems then that there's something funny going on. Strange also, that we both experienced this problem around the same time. The time difference could be due to time zone. I'm in Tokyo.
Could it perhaps be related to attempted and failed OTA update of the new firmware? This of course, could just be my wishful thinking.

My first thought was that, becouse it's suposed to reboot each time firmware updates, but now im checking if is there any update and still on 5.0.2 and there is no update

Well, I haven't had the problem since (knock on wood).
How long have you had your watch? If you've owned it for a while, I assume you haven't had the problem until recently.
Let's hope the problem is not hardware and the new 5.1.1 OS will fix the issue. There's also a chance that one of the apps I've loaded on the watch has a bug.
Yeah had it 3 months now so I don't think it's hardware, especially as others seem to be having the same issue all of a sudden too, part of me wonder if its to do with the new android wear app?
Restart it theb put it on airplane mode at night. If problems disappears then some app from your phone might be killing it
since 5.1 update I've had some odd behavior.. last night it went from 100% battery, then in cinema mode is drained itself in while i slept.
so this morning I factory reset it and removed some superfluous faces from the phone and it seems a lot better now.
I have similar issue:
I have no idea what's wrong, I had the watch on the wrist and did nothing this time, last time it happened in the night.
I tried to turn off wi-fi and wrist gestures but this is very bad...
Yeah same with mine! Since the latest update I've been charging it twice a day and last night I went to bed with it at almost 100 percent and woke up with it completely dead 6 hours later!
Battery stats are a lie too!
Anyone seen any sort of an official statement from Sony or Google about it?
Do they even know this is so wide spread?

Many people complain and there are many threads.
Before I go to bed I put both the Smartphone and Smartwatch in the charger.
The battery life on the Smartwatch 3 is okay but after my day 15 or 16 hours it is sitting at 50% or so, I need to charge it everyday.
I hope I just have not made a mistake my WiFi settings are now automatic.

Yeah I've just done the same and it's a lot better now! Also have the ambient mode enabled now which I didn't have before and the battery still seems a lot better than before the reset. Still not as good as it was on 5.0.2
If you experience the battery drain issue, try uninstalling Wear Battery Stats to see if it levels the drain out. You will need to check your battery in the wear app to see if the chart levels out. Did this on mine during a 11% drain and it seemed to fix the issue without rebooting.
That seemed to help but the battery is only lasting half as long and at times drops, just not as sharp as before.
For me it turned out to be location. Once I turned this off (on the watch), I was able to stop the sudden unpredictable (devastating) drain. I turned cloud sync back on and all of my other apps and everything is running smoothly for a few days now.
Hello!
My phone suddenly stopped charging... and now it is dead... now... like every 3 or 5 minutes, it vibrates by itself, even if unplugged... Anyone heard of this issue?
More info in my last post:
I'm unlocked, rooted, xposed, installed Beanstalk ROM, etc... But I did that months ago (I don't know, 6 months ago?) and it has been working flaglessly, I didnt do ANY change prior to this problem (really, no changes, not even a new appp installed or removed in months)
So I really think it is something in the usb charger.... Maybe I'm wrong and it got bricked somehow... please validate that.
Also, it still vibrating at least once every five minutes. (I woke up all night with it vibrating and now it is on my desk and it still does it)
I just tried an adb wait-for-devices and nothing happens, also tried to reboot it the same way and nothing happens.
Now, I remember that I did something before the phone turned off (battery ran off) I deactivated an Xposed module (latalysm or somethign like that) and didn't reboot it to complete the deactivation. Maybe it has something to do with 0% battery and that?
I really don't think so... But your advice is really welcome.
Thank you in advance.
Did you rooted or unlocked?

New data:
When I pluggin the phone to the PC, the PC plays the "hardware detection sound" but then it disconnects too. Maybe it has something to do with the battery or something related?
Thank you in advance, phone is still dead.
Mario.
Well... my phone is now even more dead... I think the problem is the battery, even if I try to charge it doesn't even get warm, I replaced the usb piece of the phone expecting that it was something with that but no... Now I'm waiting to get a replacement battery.
Anyone heard of the same issue? I've found many people having the same issue, but most of them solved the problem unplugging the battery and then plugging it back again.
Please help!
Regards.

Yes I tried that 2 months ago... But yesterday... I arrived home and tried to charge again, waited about 2 hours, turned it in and pop... I have the phone again (I keep losing phone and data signal, but... come on, it is on now)... So I don't know... I heard many times that pluging in and off the battery and "waiting" seemed to work for a lot of people, but come on... 2 months?
Regards.
I have exactly the same problem. I have replace the battery. The problem still again with the new battery

Wow... so the problem is not the battery... then it is really weird, how can just "waiting" be the solution?
Hugo, how long have you been with your phone turned off?
One month, the time to receive the new battery

That is a lot... I waited 2 months... sorry I don't know anything about the matter... but don't lose faith, maybe it will turn on again someday.... Advice, charge it and leave it charging for... a week? then try again.
I've decided to fiddle with a needle inside the USB charging port recently. After that my phone suddenly was recognised by the computer and started charging and working. After I connect it to the real charger, doesn't matter if it's original or not, it stops working and doesn't even charge from the PC. Then I have to fiddle inside the charging port and everything works again... wtf really? what can be dead?

This seems like a different problem than ours... maybe you should try replacing the usb charging port.

I'm not so sure... It sound's more like I'm either grounding some contacts or I'm somehow short circuiting something. Maybe it could be a broken capacitor or something? That would explain why your phone started working after 2 month.
Well in any case it would be interesting íf somebody with that issue would try touching the contacts in the USB port with metal needle and connect the phone to the PC.
I've ordered a new USB thingy already and going to swap it soon, I'll keep you updated.
I have try to change the battery and the usb port. The battery work one time but won't charge. Can't say if it is the same issue or because is is a cheap battery
Any news NiKiToS?
