Huawei Watch VS Samsung Gear S display quality - Huawei Watch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FG27Jq_pqYk

Cool but they look so close its hard to tell any differences aside from the Samsungs normal over saturation, which I tend to like. Doesn't the Huawei watch have an amoled screen too? I have one and I thought it did.

Sensitive eyes and black levels

I just picked up a Galaxy Nexus from WIND Mobile.
I have to say, the one thing I dread the most about AMOLED is the black/bright contrast. My eyes are very sensitive, and whenever I see something bright against an intensely dark background I get halos and it's very difficult to focus. For this reason I prefer LCD screens where the blacks are slightly grey. Nonetheless I decided to make the leap to the GNex because I like a lot of other things about it.
Do you think there is any sort of hack that could make the AMOLED look a bit more like an LCD? I realize this would affect battery life but basically what I'd like is to hack the colour space so that black becomes maybe 1-5% grey. I remember on CM7 there were hacks that could apply filters to make white into a more salmon-pinkish hue, a warmer white, etc. What I'm looking for is the reverse - leave the white alone but make the blacks greyer.
Anyone think this might be possible?
I don't know a specific solution, but here are some options:
If you're rooted, francois kernel and app can adjust the Gama levels, affecting all colors, but may help.
App Log graph can adjust your auto brightness levels.
Yes I am rooted.
Does increasing the gamma change the black levels? If so that could help.

The black on my phone at highest brightness is a little bit grey..

It seems to depend on the app. Some apps have a gentle dark grey gradient in the background. But the stock taskbar, even at full brightness, is just as black as the same part of the screen is when the screen is off.
Not trying to be a comedian here, but have you gotten your eyes checked lately?
Seeing halos is linked to several severe eyediseases or wearing wrong/none correction.
+1. Yup.

Fair enough. Optometrist says my eyes are healthy but I have large pupils that don't contract very efficiently. As a result I get halo effects at high contrast even when using proper vision correction. It's not something that poses a health threat otherwise. But he did advise me strongly against laser eye surgery as there would be a high risk of halos getting worse.
So that's me in a nutshell.

Super dim is a root app and it can lower the brightness below the normal values

I'm not looking to lower the brightness - I know how to do that already. I'm looking to decrease the contrast by making the black levels greyer.

What display settings do you use?

What display settings do you use.
Right now I'm using Standard with the change color tone to save battery option. But my second favorite would be natural with the color tone option off.
I was reading that if you use Movie mode and turn off auto tone, you get the most real looking pictures and the best contrast ratio. It beats the IPhone display in every way, contrast and real color. I tried it out and it made the display look like a LCD display. It was kinda neat. Using those settings with an iphone 5 side by side to my Note 2, the Note 2 looks way better. But still, I'm not really into the washed out look of LCD displays like the iphone 5's.
Anyway I'm just wondering what display settings you guys use on you're Note 2.

i like real colors, so i try to use whatever is best for that goal.
actually, i use natural, without the auto adjusting. looks the best imo
I was using dynamic, but I've switched to movie. I like the way it looks.

I also use dynamic and just tried using Movie. Looks weird to me, everything seems...washed out. I'm sure you get used to it after awhile but everything looks so crisp and vibrant under dynamic.
Think I'll just stick with that.

I agree with that, just messing with settings for now.

I use natural. I prefer the look of my s3 but it sits in the middle of standard and natural. Standard and vivid are just way too saturated for me. Movie is slightly more dull.

After trying all of them I'm sticking to dynamic. It looks the best and more vivid IMO

Yeah I don't use Movie mode. I was just saying what it does. Maybe for people that came from the Iphone and want the screen to look more like there old phone.
I just use standard with color tone to save battery on. I really can't tell a difference with battery life with it off though.

Natural all the way lol

Check the display settings... It's in there at the very bottom. Simple as checking it or un checking it

Movie is the most accurate visually. I couldn't handle the difference Movie made when I was used to Standard so I had to gradually get to Movie mode by using Natural as a stepping stone. Now im using movie mode and know i'm getting the most accurate intended colors. I can't ever imagine using the oversaturated standard mode. Now we have the best color reproduction / best contrast in amoled.

I find that natural is the best for me.
I edit photos on my calibrated desktop monitor. When I view those photos on my phone, natural gives the most similar colors and contrast compared to my calibrated desktop monitor (I calibrate it every 15 days or so with a spyder).

ZL washed out screen

I don't know about your ZL but the screen on mine is washed out a milky faded dull panel and it's plain to see when I compare it to other phones I remember the ZL I viewed in the Sony store to be a little better then this one.

Did you turn off the Bravia engine? Or play with the white balance?
No and the Bravia engine is only for photos and video ? and the ZL is not my only phone as I have 4 others to compare it to, now tft lcd screens are known for there lack of contrast and poor viewing angles but even my Xperia T can seem more vibrant at times.

I think either your LCD is not genuine or you might have changed any system settings using root.. you better try to change your LCD which will cost you around 5500/- INR.

Brown screen

Why does the screen look brownish when turned off? (Under direct sunlight or lots of light environments). On other phones it looks all black when display is not on.

Sorry I forgot to mention that you can see that during the day when outdoors or under direct light source. If you are in a dark room at night it looks black but if you have it in your car during the day and driving around, it looks brownish when off. I will take my other phone with me and take some pictures to show you.

I just tested it out with direct sunlight on the screen and my looks fine. Just plain black.

A little lighter (logically ), but in no way brown, reminds me of the look like my old Galaxy S4
ALL Screens with AMOLED look brownish/dark greenish when off and when looking from an angle.
Totally normal.
Thread can be closed.
I guess we have different eyes then
Never noticed this in a few years while using Samsung Galaxy S (first gen.) and I still don't notice any color change on OP3 no matter how hard I look. Even if I put it side by side with my previous phone with IPS.
Will wait for pictures, now I'm really interested to see that tint.
And will also try taking some pictures of my own to have something for more objective comparison (different color value of pixels).

I've got a similar issue I guess, the right side of my screen shows dark colours lighter than the left side of the screen. The left side looks normal.
It's noticeable when you have dark mode enabled and you pull down the quick settings toggles, but it kinda messes with me sometimes ????

That's sounds like a faulty screen... Same color should look the same everywhere on the screen.
