Is it safe to flash the stock MM ROM? - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I saw that MM if finally available for the N910V, and I also saw that WiFi calling comes with it. It's a feature I actually do need, as where I live doesn't get very good service (actually, I have no service almost all the time).
hsbadr has released a download for the OTA update, along with the modem, but the modem itself doesn't give me WiFi calling (understandably). Right now, I have a tri-boot with (a broken ) Dr. Ketan's N5 port, the 5/19 build of hsbadr's CM13 port and the 5/25 build of CM13.
I heard that MM might cause trouble, like upgrading and locking the bootloader, but I also heard that the bootloader could be downgraded and unlocked again.
If it's safe, I want to replace the Dr. Ketan's ROM with stock MM, just so I can try it out and use the WiFi calling feature until the CM13 port is updated.
Is there a series of steps that I should take to flash stock MM, while still keeping my bootloader unlocked, with TWRP and my other ROMs? Should I just wait for JasmineROM to be updated? Have I missed an obvious stock MM custom ROM on these forums (probably)?

There is no safe upgrade using the STOCK OTA from Verizon, unfortunately. Bootloader and root will go. I don't know about the downgrading and re-unlocking bootloader.........
Also, for the flash to work you need to be on 5.1.1 stock. The script checks for ver 5.1.1, but that can be changed easily. However, dont know if it depends on other things in stock 5.1.1.

I have wanted this device ever since it came out. Of course I didn't get it because I was afraid there wouldn't be root. Now all that has changed and there is root and boot loader unlock now for the verizon retail note 4. How awesome is the note 4 now that it has root. Should I buy a note 4? Every device iv had was rootable and some you could BL unlock. I want the note 4 pretty bad. What's you're guy's opinion..

It is an awesome phone. Almost like a laptop in your pocket. I have stayed away from high end phones because of the locks. Once I seen this crack I had the N4 a couple days later. So in my opinion, yes... it is well worth it. Just keep in mind that all of OUR rooting, unlock methods, and ROM choices require you to read and follow directions fully. If we don't we could have an N4 brick.

Yeah, seems like every device has a different method of rooting. I'd say for me the most aggregating device that I ever rooted and BL unlocked probably has to be the ol HTC ONE max. If owned the 1st galaxy note then upgraded through the yrs to the note 2 and 3 then I got the one max then the Lg g3 then the nexus 6 which I miss and the device I'm using now is the Lg v10. The least favorite out of all of those I mentioned would be the device I'm using now the v10, only because the is no boot loader unlock, but I do have root with no roms. Thanks for you're encouragement. I got 3 more days to wait then ima gonna head over to swappa.com. CANT WAIT?

You will be happy. As of now 5.1 is super stable. With the official release of the MM software our 6.0 Roms will become the norm.
The methods of unlocking/rooting the N4 is not to bad. It is the exploit we have to use. It can cause us issues if we don't stick to options available that are made to work with the exploit.

Looking for a little help.

I just got an Unlocked T-Mobile LG G3 that I use on AT&T. It's running 4.4.2 still. I'm looking to root it and install custom recovery and ROM on it. My question is since its the D851 then I have to use the T-Mobile forums to get the correct root and everything. Right? Also, will I still be unlocked so I can put my AT&T sim in it or does it destroy it? Also since I have 4.4.2 and try to install a ROM that's 5.0 or 5.0.2 will it softbrick the pone? Thanks for any input. It's m;y first Unlocked phone.
Yes you would use the T-Mobile forums since you purchased it from T-Mobile.
I don't see how rooting would destroy the unlocking of the device.

mine is unlocked and i use it on att and you wont loose unlock
Because of the hardware, yes, you will need to flash ROMs written for the D851, not AT&T. However you will need to manually setup the APN information for AT&T as it won't be in the ROMs.

Everyone answered your question but the last one so ill answer it. You could definitely flash any lollipop ROM so long as its made for D851. If it does not say D851 on it then do not flash it. We currently do not have a Stock lollipop rom so keep that in mind. However, feel free to root and then flash any cm12, aosp lollipop rom in the dev sections. Just READ carefully tho. A lot of people brick their devices because they refuse to read directions.

Stock Kernel on Stock Rooted Rom?

I just converted my retail Note 4 to Dev Ed, but was wondering why I can't use stock kernel on a rooted stock Rom or even custom stock rom?
I tried installing the stock kernel from the official firmware thread and maybe misunderstood that it can be used on the dev edition, but maybe there is reason why?
The stock Retail Verizon Note 4 kernal doesn't support the unlocked bootloader so you need to install one that is compatible. The reason is because Verizon wants to charge you extra for a Developer Edition so they don't waste time and money putting support in for it.
To be honest the kernel that I flashed while unlocking device is much better . My battery life if finally back to normal I get approximately 5:30 screen on time while I used to get like 2:30-3
Why should Verizon pay for support if someone f's their phone up because they had no clue to what they were doing. If it was your company, you woukd be in it to make money and not lose it! Stop complaining about Verizon, you knew everything before you signed the contract and agreed to be a part of their services. That's just MHO of course.

I don't know why everyone is saying the stock kernel & stock ROM won't work with the bootloader unlock, because they're working fine for me.
Running a rooted stock ROM with the stock kernel right now.

I didn't read the post all the way before posting. Thats why I deleted it.
Every time I install stock kernel I get a bootloop on the verizon screen.
Yeah, I never had any issues with TWRP or root.
The only thing that I might have done differently than everyone else is that after achieving the bootloader unlock, I flashed a stripped down version of the stock firmware (boot, recovery, system, cache, and modem ONLY) to make sure I was 100% KingRoot free, then wiped cache and data.
Only issue I've run into on the stock ROM is that if you delete Facebook or Instagram it breaks screen rotation. Freezing them is fine, though.
EDIT:
Just realized I'm still sitting on build BOG5 / 5.0.1, that might be why. I think it's only people on BPA1 / 5.1.1 that are having issues with that.

As stated above, it will not work at the kernel doesn't support unlocked bootloader. I had the same issue until I flashed a custom kernel.
My N4 performs well with this multi-system kernel Courtesy of @hsbadr:

Do you think marshmallow update will make the phone unlockable again?

I'm a big fan of flashing roms onto phones, but i'm also a fan of stability and want to continue using official OTA for now. Once the OTAs stop coming, I will be willing to explore keeping my phone up to date via flashing ROMS.
Given the nature of the "fix" to unlock the bootloader (converting it to dev edition), it seems to me this is something that will always work, even in the future. Do you guys agree with that?
If it's not the case, I'd rather take necessary precautions now to get my phone converted over and possibly flash stock/de-bloated ROM going forward.
You guys think it's safe to just take OTAs for now?
I don't think the CID exploit used to unlock the bootloader will/can be patched out, but that exploit needs temp root to work. Who knows if/when temp root will be available for a stock Note 4 on MM?
I would do the dev conversion now. You can always flash a safe upgrade package once the stock MM update becomes available.
I agree. Just wait for a stock "safe" upgrade package to be released. I would at least postpone immediate install of the released official UG to see what it does to the phone.
For me, I have finally got control back on my phone. I went from the note 2 to note 4. I'd still be on the 2 if it hadn't got run over by a car, But the 4 is a good hardware upgrade but I felt it was an overall downgrade with the locked boot loader. Now that I have it, I would stay on 5.1.1 forever if it meant keeping the boot loader unlocked.
Has anyone even heard any info about an update?? I figured it would be outside the window for them to consider it.

Don't touch any OTA or boot.img until I look at it and make a post in my OP.

Just made a jump from note 2 to note 4 - Need suggestions

Hello community,
I got a Note 4 N910V and the jump was something incredible. I am in love with the thing.
My note 2 was rooted and had the Resurrection Remix rom. I felt free to customize it since I didn't have to worry about the bootloader or anything but it was really sluggish.
My note 4 came with 5.0.1(stock rom) and skiming through the forums I'm seeing things like 'safely upgrade to MM'. Makes me thing the OTA update ain't working right for everyone.
I'm not getting any OTA updates, could be because I'm not in the US and my phone is unlocked for a local telco.
I have a couple of questions
- Is the MM update fine? Battery, performance, root? how would I update if I'm not getting any OTA updates?
- I know about kingroot but is it recommended as the root option for my OS version. I found this but It's been a long time since I rooted a phone.
- Any popular ROM/Mods? RR was a big thing in the note 2 community (also a couple of custom kernels).
Pics of what I got down below.
Thank you for your time.
I'm using this phone on Bell Mobility in Canada and was unable to get the OTA. I have no intention of rooting this phone yet.
I was able to get the stock 6.0.1 OTA file from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/not...mware-firmware-kernel-modem-recovery-t2942937
I was able to update using the stock recovery without issue....

Hey man thank you for your answer!
Did you have any problems with the unlocked properties (telco wise, no bootloader) when flashing these things?
I also checked my download mode and doesn't say anything about developer. Seems fine showing up Odin mode so I'm going to assume this is a retail version.

The only way to get an ota is to be on Verizon. Other wise you'll need to download the update and flash with Odin or flash with stock recovery.
The reason for the "safe update to mm" threads are for people who rooted and unlocked the boot loader. You'll need to follow one of those threads if you want root. Nothing wrong with just updating to mm other than you'll have to downgrade to 5.1.1 if you later decide you want root and unlocked boot loader
These phones become really unstable if you just try to root and you lose root once you restart the phone.

Upgrading Modem?

Hello all. I recently spent 5+ hours rooting and turning my VZW Note 4 into a "developer" phone. I've rooted a lot of phones, but this particular process had me pretty frustrated. I had several problems with the software versions I was using. Anyway, I'm curious if I should upgrade just my modem firmware to the latest included in VZW's 6.0.1 release. On my old Android devices, I used to do this with great success. Signal strenght would increase (or worsen), GPS signal would be better, etc. Is this included in ROMS and/or is it safe to do this?
Oh man,lol don't tell me that. I just bought a note 4 off swappa and it'll be here wendsday probably. I have been wanting a note 4 for along time. Only reason why I never got it was because of root and BL being locked down. Now that there is custom roms & kernels I bought it and can't wait to get it. Is it really that bad to Root and BL unlock? If it took you that long it'll take me days because I work 12hr job 7 days a week. I'm just trying to find all the necessary files I need to download now that way that will be done with.

Look in @hsbadr's Jasmine ROM thread. There's a partial firmware to flash that will update both the bootloader and the modem to PF3, which is the latest and greatest. It's required if you want to use Jasmine 7.0 or @chevyrhoad's Grace 7 ROMs.

It's a matter of being familiar with the tools. The process is pretty rudimentary. If you have a knowledge of linux and/or abd you'll be fine. I had trouble when my phone decided to start boot looping. Turns out it skipped my mind to wipe the cache/data clean after a stock odin flash. After all is said and done, the process is fairly simple. Also, King Root is a big issue. If you dump a fresh ROM from odin onto your device, install King Root, and attempt to root it it will root successfully everytime, the first time. On some other ROMs it can give you a considerable amount of trouble. I recommend resetting your lollipop to defaults, rooting it, flashing to the 5.1.1/6.0.1 hybrid, rooting again, and then continue about your business. There's a certain set of steps that makes this process painless which you can only ascertain if you have done it.

Can I flash "N910VVRU2CPF3_PartialFirmware_PatechedKernel.tar.md5" from his thread overtop of my TRWM and CM 13 ROM? I have both installed, and I'm wondering if I can just boot into the bootloader and odin this to the phone. CM 13 supports it, so why not? I'm just worried about it a kernel malfunction.

To the best of my knowledge, it does nothing to the kernel. All it does is upgrade the modem.
