My dad just bought a AT&T GS3 from a friend and I just finished unlocking it so he can use his T-Mobile service. We've confirmed his voice calling is working. I want to root this phone so I can flash a stock ROM that removes all the AT&T stuff. What's the proper way to root the unlocked phone now? Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide.
PS. Any work around to get 3G vs Edge?
Look in the dev section EVERYTHING you need is in there. This question on how to root is asked so much its not even funny anymore. Oh wait I just seen your paps is on tmobile, if you want a stock rom for that you need to go to their section

the phone should stay unlocked through rooting and a custom rom. mine is unlocked, rooted, with aokp on it and it still can use other carrier's sim cards with no problem. about the 1700 band, there is currently no way to use it with this phone. there is a bounty thread in the general section about it.
edit: do you want a stock tmobile rom or a vanilla android rom?

Thanks for the replies. I guess where I'm confused is what root method do I use? ATT since it's ATT hardware, or Tmobile since it's now unlocked and connected to TMobile? Sorry for my lack of knowledge on this.

Hello,
Sorry if this was asked before but i couldnt find it in the search as its coming up with numerous returns on something else.
Anyways, I bought an AT&T s3 rooted and i was able to put it back to stock with Android 4.0.4. After i put it back to stock i got it unlocked to use on T-Mobile.
My questions are,
how do i update the software to the latest version. do i update it with AT&T software or do i use the T-Mobile software version?
If I update it again will it get locked again?
Rooting is not really an option as it is for my daughters use
thank you in advance for any replies,
V

If you update i believe it will no longer be unlocked to use on T-Mobile. However you do need to use the AT&T ROMs for it to work on your phone.
so is it best to root the phone and update it that way.

You can try updating the phone using the phone's OTA updater. It may not work if you have root.
I don't recommend updating all the way to 4.3 as it will load a 4.3 bootloader which cannot be downgraded and Knox.
Dear LG Friends,
Long time XDA member, coming from the Windows Phone days HTC, then to Android HTC, bunch of Samsungs, and am now thinking about the LG space. More specifically moving from the Note 3 (T-Mobile US) running on the AT&T US, to the LG G3.
Before I do, I need some help from you guys. Which variant should I go for? I know my primary choices will be the T-Mobile and the AT&T variants (I believe they are 851 and 850)? Based on what's important to me, below, can you guys advise which variant to get?:
1. Development Support - Which variant has the MOST amount of Custom ROM options, that is on-going and kept current? I am spoiled with the Note 3, which has a massive development support. I have never tried the LG OS/Skin (escaping me what it's called), but if it's anything like the TouchWiz on Samsungs, I think it will be important to have CM/AOSP/AOKP and etc support.
2. This is related to # 1 - But I heard that only T-Mobile has the unlocked Bootloader? However, doing some research, I believe the AT&T and the Verizon and Sprint variants can also be unlocked? Is this true? If so, are they anymore limited than the factory unlocked T-Mobile variant?
3. LTE bands - I will most likely be using the phone on AT&T US, but if development options/support are higher on other variants, I might consider buying those models, even if they are missing some AT&T bands. For the Note 3 - T-Mobile is a Pentaband phone, meaning it had all the bands needed, so it could easily work on AT&T LTE, all the time. The reverse was not true.
And basically that is it. Initial instinct says to go chase the T-Mobile variant, based on my needs above. But please educate me and help me out if I have missed something. Thank you so much in advance!
Any input guys?

If you want OTA updates i suggest sticking with the AT&T variant since you have a valid AT&T sim. If you use a AT&T sim in a T-Mobile variant you wont ever get OTA updates and that means missing out on necessary fixes
1. All 3 US Variants are mostly the same, all have CM12 and all the random obscure AOSP roms as well
2. Well unlocked bootloader isnt that fancy it just means theres fastboot mode compared with the other editions where fastboot mode doesnt work properly even if you enable it. It essentially just makes installing TWRP easier since you dont have to root before installing it unlike other variants
Nevertheless Lollipop can be rooted on all US Variants right now really easily. But the only downside to it is that removing custom roms sometimes can be a pain since you have to use a way where it sometimes works and sometimes doesnt

Hi Friend,
Thanks for your response, this is very helpful!
No OTA is never a thing I consider. Everything that matters to me, is what I listed already.
So, is the development support (new ROMs, updates and etc) the same for all US variants or would you say one variant is particularly more popular?
As for the locked bootloader, I thought you needed an Unlocked bootloader to flash Custom ROMs, no? It seems like "Bump" fixes this for Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T and gets you TWRP on your phone, but do we need to do extra steps everything to the boot.img for non T-Mobile variants? Or is it a one time mod and then regular flashing and Backups with TWRP?
If it's the same for all variants after Bump, then you're right, I will likely stay with an AT&T variant, thanks to that Band 7 LTE.
Thank you again for your help, hopefully more can chime in !

No need for any steps. Its just install TWRP and your on your way to installing whatever rom you want
Unlocked bootloader means that the system doesnt security (consistency) checks on system partitions
For LG G3, its because someone cracked the encryption for the kitkat android bootloader which means people can sign non stock boot.img without having to worry about unlocking the bootloader.

Gotcha, thanks again mate! Another (hopefully last) question. If I buy G3, where someone had already OTA'd to 5.0+, will I still be able to root it, install TWRP and get KK ROMs, like CM11 or something?
And vice versa, if the phone comes with KK, do I need to patch with Bump and then I can install ROMs?
Thank you again!

You can root it but i dont know if installing TWRP will work. I didnt want to try it incase it doesnt work and it runs the factory reset script instead. That happened to me once before
But i would say just to be sure, downgrade back to KitKat to do it
Yeah, if the phone comes with KitKat just root, install TWRP using root permissions and then your on your way

This is helpful, once again bud. So how would I downgrade back to KK? Would I have to run a stock firmware of some sort? In Samsung, he Flash a .Tar file through their flashing tool called the Odin. Would that be similarly done here?
Hello,
I'm relarively new to the Galaxy S3 realm, and after a brief experience with a defective SGH T999 that I returned for a refund (which I'm pretty sure shipped with an unlocked bootloader out of the box since T-Mobile is usually good with doing that with their devices), I'm thinking of getting an SGH i747 new and networked unlocked on Amazon for use with T-Mobile since the SGH i747 is the least expensive S3 variant out there with LTE capabilities. I don't want to actually make the purchase until I know these two things:
1) Can the bootloader be unlocked on the latest official firmware (which I believe is 4.3 according to my research)? If so, how?
2) If I can unlock the bootloader on the latest official firmware, what ROMs will I be able to use? I read somewhere that using a ROM designed for an different stock firmware can lead to problems (like how 4.0 firmware users can't use 4.1 firmware ROMs)
I'm hoping I can get this since it has great features for the money, but if I can't install ROMs on it, I'm going to have to look for a different device to purchase.
Thanks ahead of time!
EDIT: I found an article stating there was an All In One toolkit that would root, bootloader unlock, and install recovery for US variant galaxy S3's, and it linked to me to an XDA thread. However, after reading the XDA thread, it seems that it is only able to unlock bootloaders of Nexus devices. Can anyone confirm for me that this all in one toolkit can unlock the bootloader for the latest firmware of the ATT S3?

all s3i747 should already be bootloader unlocked. i bricked my first one trying to "unlock" the bootloader.lol. kind of.
as far as firmware i am assuming you mean bootloader/modem. once you are on NE4 and above firmware , trying to downgrade ,i.e. mj2 firmware will give you a nice looking paper weight.
custom ROMs ; flash away (after making a backup of course). i have never seen a custom ROM include the bootloader/firmware. although you need to always read the OP to make sure it is compatible with whatever your current firmware is.,i.e.(again) if its a ROM for nj2 your ne4 firmware may need to be upgraded to match. @audit13 or @dawgdoc can confirm/deny/provide more info i am sure.
hope this helps at least some.
good luck.

Are you SURE they are all unlocked out of box, regardless of firmware? I have seen guides as to how to unlock the bootloader for the i747 on 4.1.1 firmware, which would lead me to believe they aren't unlocked out of the box.

well i'll tell you the honest truth. nevermind bootloaders and whatnot. i gave my S3 away to upgrade to the htcm8. to do all over ; i would have kept it or ordered one like you , or off swappa ,etc. i miss it.
good luck

Looking in the all in one toolkit, it gives the user the option to root, busybox, and install custom recovery on a 4.3 ATT S3. From my knowledge, one needs an unlocked bootloader to install custom recoveries. Unless this is some sort of special recovery, it seems to me that this is in fact unlocked. Perhaps another user can confirm this.
thats why i mentioned audit13 and dawgdoc earlier. both more knowledgeable than me and i was hoping they would chyme in. or @DocHoliday77.

The bootoader is not locked. If you try to unlock it using software tools, you will brick it. I have never come across anyone on xda with an att s3 with a locked bootoader but I have come across a few that bricked their phone trying to unlock the bootoader.
Although att often locks the bootoader on their phones (e.g. note 3, s4, lg g2), they did not do this on the sgh-i747.
Once the phone is running the mjb or higher bootoader, you cannot flash an older bootoader.
Alright, thanks to both of you guys for the assistance. Just let out a huge breath of relief, I was scared my money went to waste. Can't wait for this to come in, and I'm eager to be a part of the i747 community on XDA!
Plus I got the red one
If you decide to flash anything to the phone, make sure you verify the bootloader version before flashing anything.
When you receive the phone, boot into download mode to confirm the model # as well.

Yes, I do recall reading something about only being able to flash ROMs made for the specific bootloader of the phone. But if I were to flash a ROM for d2lte (designed to work with ALL Galaxy S3 models), I would assume it would work alright regardless of bootloader version?

For stock ROMs, only flash for the d2att. For custom ROMs, only flash ROMs for the d2lte.
So no CM9 then eh?

Well, d2lte and d2att roms.
There are a few quirks about particular roms, do not hesitate to ask more questions as they arise. Sometimes you will contradicting answers, or typos causing incorrect answers.
Just an update, the S3 arrived. Looks beautiful physically.
But beyond that...

That's a nice state to receive an i747. Before doing any updates to bootloader and modem or flashing any ROMs I would suggest doing the free sim unlock found in the forums. (Yes, even though the bootloader is unlocked the sim card does not come unlocked out of the box.) If you upgrade to the 4.3 bootloader or newer you will no longer be able to do the free sim unlock. Although there are always paid unlocks.

As long as you didn't flash 4.3 or newer bootloaders you should be good.
I saw that MM if finally available for the N910V, and I also saw that WiFi calling comes with it. It's a feature I actually do need, as where I live doesn't get very good service (actually, I have no service almost all the time).
hsbadr has released a download for the OTA update, along with the modem, but the modem itself doesn't give me WiFi calling (understandably). Right now, I have a tri-boot with (a broken ) Dr. Ketan's N5 port, the 5/19 build of hsbadr's CM13 port and the 5/25 build of CM13.
I heard that MM might cause trouble, like upgrading and locking the bootloader, but I also heard that the bootloader could be downgraded and unlocked again.
If it's safe, I want to replace the Dr. Ketan's ROM with stock MM, just so I can try it out and use the WiFi calling feature until the CM13 port is updated.
Is there a series of steps that I should take to flash stock MM, while still keeping my bootloader unlocked, with TWRP and my other ROMs? Should I just wait for JasmineROM to be updated? Have I missed an obvious stock MM custom ROM on these forums (probably)?

There is no safe upgrade using the STOCK OTA from Verizon, unfortunately. Bootloader and root will go. I don't know about the downgrading and re-unlocking bootloader.........
Also, for the flash to work you need to be on 5.1.1 stock. The script checks for ver 5.1.1, but that can be changed easily. However, dont know if it depends on other things in stock 5.1.1.
I have wanted this device ever since it came out. Of course I didn't get it because I was afraid there wouldn't be root. Now all that has changed and there is root and boot loader unlock now for the verizon retail note 4. How awesome is the note 4 now that it has root. Should I buy a note 4? It is an awesome phone. Almost like a laptop in your pocket. I have stayed away from high end phones because of the locks. Once I seen this crack I had the N4 a couple days later. So in my opinion, yes... it is well worth it. Just keep in mind that all of OUR rooting, unlock methods, and ROM choices require you to read and follow directions fully. If we don't we could have an N4 brick.

Yeah, seems like every device has a different method of rooting. I'd say for me the most aggregating device that I ever rooted and BL unlocked probably has to be the ol HTC ONE max. If owned the 1st galaxy note then upgraded through the yrs to the note 2 and 3 then I got the one max then the Lg g3 then the nexus 6 which I miss and the device I'm using now is the Lg v10. The least favorite out of all of those I mentioned would be the device I'm using now the v10, only because the is no boot loader unlock, but I do have root with no roms. Thanks for you're encouragement. I got 3 more days to wait then ima gonna head over to swappa.com. CANT WAIT?

You will be happy. As of now 5.1 is super stable. With the official release of the MM software our 6.0 Roms will become the norm.
The methods of unlocking/rooting the N4 is not to bad. It is the exploit we have to use. It can cause us issues if we don't stick to options available that are made to work with the exploit.
