There are several work arounds available here. if you root, the number of possibilities for you will increase, if not, you'll have very limited options.

I am a noob and need help with my phone. I have factory unlocked a Galaxy Note 2 SGH-I317 from AT&T and am using the straight talk network. The main problem I am having is that the phone will not send or receive MMS and the data is very slow. What do I need to do to be able to use the phone at full capacity, and get rid of all the AT&T b.s apps; with out losing the stock functionality. What is the latest rom so I can root this phone????? I have looked four hours all over the forums and all the answers are outdated and confusing. Thank you for all ( if any) help it is very much appreciated.

Make sure you APN settings are correct for straight talk that will cause data and mms issues.

I purchased a sprint galaxy note II that had aleady been flashed to metropcs for a good deal. I was able to get it activated for metropcs and currently have voice and mms functioning correctly. I have run into a dead end in trying to get the data to work for the phone. I have used the Galaxy Note2 toolkit. I am new to Odin and Clockwork Mod in general so this is becoming a bit tedious for me. I flashed the synergy Rom yesterday in a feable attempt to get my "data" back on track but now i realize I need help and guidance from the experts of the forum. Any guidance to point me in the right direction would be appreciated- for example- do I need to flash a radio, kernel, etc?... I hope I don't come off as a complete idiot considering I have spent hours on getting this thing Rooted- I really don't know what to do now. Thanks for the help.
Search for my guide on the galaxy s3 forum here. It worked for the evo 4g, evo 3d and galaxy s3, it should work on the note 2.
You wont get data without the proper provisioning. On these phones that requires using dfs or cdma tools. On htc phones it can be done with qpst.
Do the provisioning part of the guide and that should work.

Thanks Max, I figured the S3 would be a good place to start. I will work on it today.
Ok- Started the work on this today and wanted to give an update and where I am stuck. I am at BloodyKiller 86's section of the provisioning. I'm on windows 8- I installed the Diag drivers and can now see in my device manager a tab under modems that lists "Samsung Mobile USB Modem." In checking the properties it shows Com 3. On my Galaxy Note 2 when I do ##3424# it pulls up a PhoneUtil screen(UART)- I can either select CMDA Modem or PDA and then below that there is a Qualcom USB SETTING tab that gives me the following options: (mtp), (mtp+adb), (ptp), (ptp +adb), (RMNET+DM+Modem), and (DM+Modem+ADB). I am now stuck with using CDMA Workshop. I downloaded the demo version and am not sure if this is the reason i am getting stuck. I have chosen COM 3(shows in the properties of the Samsung Modem) and can connect to it successfully but when i attempt to Read Device in DM mode it gives me the "Failed...Device does not answer." I have tried choosing the different options above and connecting but to no avail. I am hoping you may have some advice for me. I appreciate all your hard work and will continue to work on this until I get this Note 2 working with Data.

Can I get the link to your thread on the Galaxy S3 problem for data?
I'm sorry if this is not the place for this question. Although a member for quite awhile, I haven't posted much, but I need your help. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (N900T) and I had to root it to unlock it and make it work on MetroPCS. Well because of this, I can no longer check for software updates under the "settings" menu.
I don't know if my phone needs to stay rooted but I assume it doesn't and would like to be able to use the software update feature again. I know this is an extremely newbie question, but can I "un-root" my phone and will it enable software updating again? Thank you very much for any help that can be offered..
Steve
The N900T and the N900A are configured differently. You have posted your question in the N900A forum. You will probably get a better answer in the N900T forum. Good Luck.

I also rooted via the auto root just to use region lockaway. Would the phone still be unlocked if we were to unroot it?
anyone?
I see various devices on various carriers have had problems with the wifi hotspot on FoxFi after the 4.3 OTA update, and while some people have been able to get around the problem, I don't see that anyone has with the AT&T Note 2.
I've tried the trick of pressing the home button when the dialog box pops up saying "Mobile hotspot is unavailable ... To enable mobile hotspot on this device, go to att.com/mywireless or dial 611" and then opening FoxFi again. FoxFi shows the hotspot is active, but no device can see it.
I actually had PDANet installed (fully paid), and it showed that the FoxFi component was version 2.10. I uninstalled PDANet and reinstalled version 2.13.1 of FoxFi (not sure what the difference is between the PDANet and FoxFi versions of the app). Same problem.
The only other possible solution I've run across involved the Note 3 on Verizon -- accepting a new VPN certificate or forcing FoxFi to offer a new one up by getting rid of the existing one. But FoxFi has never offered me a certificate, and I don't see any old one (or any for that matter) in Settings > Security > Trusted Credentials > User.
Has anyone whose Note 2 is not rooted been able to get FoxFi functioning after updating to 4.3?
Alrighty! The thus far deafening silence leads inexorably to this query then: does anyone have FoxFi running on a rooted AT&T Note 2 and is also paired with a Galaxy Gear?
I opted for stock OTA 4.3 with my Note 2 primarily because of the Gear, but the FoxFi problem on 4.3 has proven to be a double-whammy -- not only have I lost the hotspot after taking 4.3 OTA, but I also can no longer Bluetooth tether -- which means I can't get a direct Internet connection to the Gear (and do all those things that the limited, stock Gear connection to one's phone cannot do).
Somebody... anybody? I'm at an airport right now using the abominable Boingo $5 for 24 hours of 2.8 Mbps d/l speed service on my tab. The hotel I stayed at had its wifi go down for 2 hours yesterday afternoon. I would root and find a way, but I don't want to have to mess (read: spend time) with the can of worms that would open with pairing my Galaxy Gear....

Why PM? Can you please post this publicly? I have the same problem. Thanks!
Most custom ROMs have it built it.
I don't know about cocheci, but as I indicated above, I'd need a custom ROM that also works with the Gear without problem. From what I've gleaned from its thread, the Sky Note Air 4.3 ROM may well fit that bill. I just have to find an empty space in my schedule for the potential time sink. (Got a wife and young kids and a more than full time job, so long gone are the days when I could spend all night dikking around with tech toys.)

Sky note is an awesome ROM. Latest version is G2 I believe. It also comes with out the NOTE 3 stuff in the vanilla flavor. Very lickable. I mean likable.
Not much dikking required.
