The system itself does that because that's the way it was made and if you alter your system without having write protection removed from the phones kernel then every time you delete something you shouldn't, the phone is going to put it right back where it was. You need root access and a modified eng kernel in order to do what you're trying to do.

[Q] incRom 1.4 boot animation

So I'm not able to find a 'how to' on changing the boot animation, been running incRom for awhile now and figured I'd change things up a bit. Anyone know how or know a link to view how to change this? Thanks in advance
Do you have root explorer? If so you can copy and paste a new boot animation right in to the proper location. Probably system/customize/resource. Just rename or move your current one so you can still use it later on. I just made a pretty badass one recently. If you want I can post a flashable zip for you. Just let me know where its located and what clockwork recovery you have.

Here's the file to push with adb or root explorer. Just take the 3 out of the name. Let me know if you need help and what you think of the boot.

Ok need alil help on this one, I can do it through recovery but for the sake of learning to do this another way I'd like to try it through root explorer. I found the original boot animation listed under system/bin/ what do I need to do from there? Rename the original one and do I change permissions on that one and if so which ones do I check and uncheck?

Alright. So from root explorer scroll down to system. At the top it has mount ro and mount rw. You want to mount rw. Now find the original boot and rename it to VZW_bootanimation.zip.bak. Go back to the SD card through root explorer, long press and copy the new bootanimation. Now go back to system/bin and paste. Should work from there. Ive never had to set or fix permissions. Holla back.

Should be. It'll be VZW_droid.mp3. It might be android_audio.mp3 but that was before 2.2. Put it in the same folder as the bootanimation.

I've removed some programs through root uninstaller. Such as gmail. I didn't make backups.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
Probably have to wipe data and reinstall roms or try flashing a Gapps package.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
some apps, such as gmail, can be downloaded from the market. For others have you tried pulling the apks from your rom.zip and placing them in /system/app?
While it is normally fine to remove certain system apps (I routinely strip down every rom I install of certain apps), getting them back can be a pain sometimes if you're not sure how to do it. Another way to achieve the same goal is to 'freeze' all the apps you don't want to use. They won't show in the app list and they won't run in the background but they will still be there if you ever need them.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
I would wipe data if it doesn't work reflash the rom.
Some of the stuff you may have removed may be best resolved by reflashing the build that you're using. For example, I use Gmail and another mail app, no need for Exchange or the stock email. I used to not back these up so when I actually needed to test something it was off to ODIN my phone again . Now I use TB and back it up before I remove it.
This is very simple to fix. It should never be a pain to accomplish either.
1: Find the apps you want to restore in the rom you flashed (if you don't have the original .zip, download it or a similar rom). Use 7zip or WinRAR to open the rom file.
2. Copy the apps you want to your sdcard.
3. Use Root Explorer or similar app to move or copy the apps to /system/app (you will need to make sure your file explorer can mount the /system in rw)
4. Reboot and enjoy
Basically you just want to pull the apps from a copy or the rom you flashed or a similar one (ICS>ICS GB>GB). Then move those apps to /system/app and reboot. The phone will reinstall them when it boots back up.

[MOD]Phantom's Build.prop Tweaks

Taking this down for now, I have a rom coming out tonight
Hey all, some of you may know me from other sammy forums. I currently don't have a galaxy s iii yet, so am limited to what I can do in terms of development at the moment, but would like to release some build prop tweaks for you guys to get things running a little smoother.
The build.prop is attached at the bottom, just unzip and adb push to /system or place it there using root explorer and change permissions to match the existing file.. Enjoy, I will have more to come soon
For the latest lf9 Update.

Unzipped, moved to /system, and replaced file. Tried a reboot but no dice. I suggest you know for sure that a mod is going to work before you post. No disrespect

I placed the build.prop file in the /system directory and gave it a reboot. My phone didn't show the boot animation. Wouldn't boot at all. I had to restore from a nandroid.
I used root explorer. Perhaps it can only be done using adb?

files missing in TWRP/file explorer

I noticed while trying to flash a new kernal for lifeless 14.. I download the file like normal (in downloads folder) when i go to try and flash and select the file I dont see it anywhere. I reboot my phone and go back into recovery. I move the .zip to the root of the sdcard and i still cant see the file.
I notice a lot of files/folders missing in es file explorer. Its like as if im running a weird install that has all my files somewhere else but acting as if there are no files present.
Im trying to figure this out..
Do you have a folder named '0' in sdcard? (\sdcard\0)
yes. and well there are all of my folders.. how would i fix this?
You need to move the files to mnt/sdcard/0/download

Ok, now I've got a similar question: how do I find my TWRP backups? When I hit 'restore' in recovery, it doesn't show anything anymore....
The problem I've run into was that it created the sdcard/0 folder that is only visible from computer. I moved everything back to sd root and it was fine and dandy.... UNTIL! I flashed a new ROM, and it's as if the flash that created the 0 folder assigned that as data/media, and when I wiped to flash a new ROM, all data on the SD was cleaned off. Anyone else run into this issue? BTW, moving everything 1 folder up takes forever!

Can someone post the McAfee APK?

Hi,
I would like to put the McAfee app back on my G3. The find my phone feature looked reasonable when I was running the stock ROM.
Can anyone post it? I assume its not just the normal McAfee app from the playstore.
Thanks

FYI, there is a thread with system dumps etc if you search.

Hi there. I have a D855 installed FulmicsRom-5.0. I wanted to install McAfee to my phone. The provided apk works but it's not have some futures i needed. Newer versions, like v30c stock include, have private photo taking of intruders etc. I tried to install the one from my v30c twrp backup (extracted to PC); but it don't work. Always displays "Sorry, McAfee has stopped" or something like that. Is there a way to install my McAfee version (namely version 4.5.0.7066)? Any help is appreciated.
