Screen Goes Black When Using Phone in N Dev 3 Preview - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm having an issue when making or receiving a call. The screen goes black. Same thing happens if I use Hangouts to make a call. Maybe it's my phone. Never had this problem on MM. And no issues when I use the S7.

It's has something to do with the proximity sensor. When you end a call or want to end the call, lock the phone then unlock it. That should let you unlock the phone with the screen on and end the call. There's no real fix besides not being on the dev preview. Actually you might be able to turn off the screen turning off during the call but I'm not sure.

Tried that with no luck. Only way to get out of the black screen is to double click power to get the camera app to appear, then close it.

That's weird. I've never had it where I had to go to camera. Check to see if you can turn off the proximity sensor. Honestly that issue was why I stopped using the dev preview and swapped back to purenexus.

Ended up flashing back to MM. Tried everything possible to get it to work.
Downloaded the N Dev 3 preview twice (in case of a bad DL).
Tried flashing manually via fastboot twice.
Clean flashed MM then flashed N Dev 3.
Clean flashed MM then took the OTA.
Every time, the same issue happened. Screen went blank when making/receiving a call. Locking the phone by hitting power button didn't work. Sometimes the double click to camera would. Usually needed to power off.

I was having the same issue, I hope in the next release the issue get fixed

I mas with this problem and I just change the screen protetor film

[Q] galaxy note 2 on tmobile sgh-t889 screen turn off during call and stay off

I just got my note 2 on ebay, phone looks new , came with all the plastic attached and all.
Works good too. But. When I am on the call the screen turns off, which is ok, but it should turn on if I take the phone from my ear, and if I press power button. It dose not do that. The screen stays off untill the other party hang up. Any know issues like that, any fixes?

Root it and load another rom and see if it still does it.

Rooting is not a solution. I like stock rom , at least for now.
I wish to keep it @Stock if possible. Unless rooting is the only way to fix it
Not sure if you have already done this but you can try rebooting the phone? It may be a one off issue.

NT
an update FYI
Restart did not solve the issue, but I have found the setting to disable screen off during call so this will do for now
Omg I have the SAME EXACT PROBLEM and it annoys me SO MUCH. Sometimes I place a phone call and the other party goes to voicemail and i CANT hang up because my screen DOESN'T turn back on at all while its recording minutes of voicemail until I pull the battery. I have disabled the screen off thing and i usually just press the power button when i'm placing a call so the screen shuts off and i can actually turn it back on. One trick i learned is try to place the phone call without your face next to the phone right away. Wait until it starts dialing and/or someone picks up. Another "fix" to the problem is dialing and pressing speakerphone which I think worked for me.
I think it is a problem with the proximity sensor but I'm not sure. When the problem happens to me I always notice the proximity sensor is lit up red if you look closely, and I have tried pressing all button combinations but nothing has fixed the problem
Same issue here. If I move phone away from my ear during call screen is still off. Most of the time it's fixable by just covering the sensors with your thumb for 2 seconds and then the screen will show back up. Hope I helped

I got my phone couple of weeks ago and everyhing was ok until last night when my phone did same thing you all describe. It is brand new note 2 purchased from Tmobile with untouched stock rom.
What happened? And how do you deactivate screen off when holding phone at your ear?

I am curious, why u guys didn't contact Samsung and ask them about the problem. Plus, I noticed all of you guys have brand new phones so it is still under manufacture warranty. Also, the good thing is all of you have stock ROM and your flash counter is 0. So just contact them and send it to them. Most probably you will get another brand new phone from Samsung it self :victory:
Did disabling the auto screen off solve the problem?

I have the exact same problem here. With all these months, one has to wonder why there's no real fix for this.
But could you please clarify your post a bit for me as something isn't clear. to me.
I read that you turned off the auto screen off (proximity sensor off) option. What's not clear to me, is did that in fact work, to where the screen just stays on without going out at all? Or does it still go out?
I've disabled mine, but I don't use the phone much, so it will take a while to figure out if this worked or not.
Thanks in advance.
Mine doesn't work either. I'm on custom rom. In the call my screen just blacks out. I installed some sensor apps and literally my proximity sensor don't work unless there are a crap ton of light shining on it.

My proximity / light sensor seems to work properly but also sometimes seems to stick. I just do this
1) Open the phone dialer
2) Hit menu and select 'call settings'
3) Uncheck "auto screen off during calls"
I know it doesnt technically fix the sensor issue but now you should be able to use the power button to turn the screen off / on during calls. Works for me anyway. Hope that helps!

Ouch. Ive never used aokp. I could definitely see how it could be a pain. If your sensor is acting up, sadly, you might have to swap to another rom. Jedi series are nice and do have the ability to disable the screen off on call feature.

Ok I guess an updat is in order.
Since my posting. I have been running ok, with no issues what so ever. With the incall auto off sceen set to off my phone is working well. The screen do go off based on the power saving rules (one minute) but I cba get it back up with power button. So all is working. The prox. Sensor works for all other apps I think.

then I went to stock and had the same problem randomly but not always... Dunno why!

[Guide] How to Recalibrate Proximity Sensor

Credit goes to @DerekZ10 and @cym1124
So I can't be the only one who's had proximity sensor issues after putting on a glass screen protector. The phone screen would remain black during calls and the only way to get it back up was if the other person hung up the call. Turns out you can fix the issue by recalibrating the sensor in the hidden menu.
Steps:
1. Type ##228378 in the dialer and press call. It should bring up the hidden menu
2. Select "Device Test"->"MT", it will show "system will be restarted", then choose OK.
3. After reboot, GENESIS MiniOS 3.1 screen will show up, press "individual item+power" while power button is pressed.
4. Find "sensor test", enter it(do not block the proximity sensor), the proximity sensor will be automatically calibrated. Then block proximity sensor two times to exit.
5. Find "Back to the MainList" and click it
6. Press "Normal boot+power" while power butten is pressed to reboot system
7. Make a call and test the sensor to see if the screen turns off when next to your ear and back on when pulled away from your ear.

It only works for Verizon G4's. If you have a non-Verizon G4 then you need to find the right code in the general G4 forums.

If you have root you won't need a code. I pulled Adam Szalkowski's ActivityLauncher from his Sourceforge and gave it the ability to launch activities as Root. This version of ActivityLauncher will first try Adam's method of launching an activity, then if that fails, it will open a command shell with root privilege and execute:
am start -a android.intent.action.MAIN -n (ActivityNameHere) where (ActivityNameHere) is something like "com.lge.hiddenmenu/.HiddenMenu"
Note that I was to lazy to add a popup dialog confirming you want to launch with root. It will just do it if Adam's method fails. For this reason you may want to tell SuperUser to ask every time.
Get it at the link below. On the bottom is a link to download rootActivityLauncher-2.0.apk.
https://github.com/DerekZiemba/RootActivityLauncher/releases/tag/V2.0
An alternative to the app is running that command yourself in adb shell.
Weird, doesn't work on my unrooted 13B.

My screen cracked in the exact spot of the light sensor and in order to unlock my phone now I need bright light on the area. e.g. another phone's flashlight, well lit room. I thought this might be the solution but when I went to the light sensor test on this method it said that the calibration failed. What might cause this issue? Do I need to get my screen replaced to fix this? I am planning on replacing the screen but is there a short term fix to this annoyance? Also I don't remember, but is it usually possible to unlock a G4 in a dark room, let's say at night before bed with all the lights off?

No clue. You can unlock the G4 in a dark room but there is also a feature on the G4 where if it senses something directly in front of it using the proximity sensor and the room is dark, it prevents itself from staying on. It's to prevent accidental wakes while in your pocket or inside a bag.
Wanted to mention that this completely fixed my issue with lack of light and the screen turning off immediately. It annoyed me for months, but I just conditioned myself to accept it. Thanks for posting this!
Two questions.
1. Should this be calibrated in a dark room? I would assume not.
2. After doing this, should the screen turn off when I put it to me ear or should it stay on ? Normal behavor is for it to turn off.
I ask these because after doing this my screen doesnt turn off when blocking the sensor during a call.

I calibrated it with lights on which makes sense because it needs to be able to tell when the light is being blocked. Screen should turn off during a call if you have the phone up to your ear then back on when you take it away from your head.

Thanks for the reply. Those were my thoughts.
I didn't get this to work the first few times I tried it. I messed with it a day or two later and it seemed to have worked like it should. Since I got it to work, the phone hasn't had any issues to my knowledge.
Thanks it works with my LG G3 D855(global)!!
Only the code to enter the hidden menu varies: G3 D855 Marshmallow *#546368#*855# (note: 3845#*855# with Lollipop)

Phone screen stays black on phone calls.

I'm not sure if it's a proximity issue, software, or related to the phone app itself but quite frequently when I'm on a phone call my screen will stay black even if I pull my face away from the phone. Pressing the power button does nothing, double pressing it for the camera shortcut will have the phone vibrate but still black screen. If I place my finger on the fingerprint scanner it vibrates but still black screen. The only way to get the screen to come back on is for the other caller to hang up. It was especially bad when I called my voicemail and couldn't hang up so it was stuck like that until I held the volume up and power buttons to manually reset the phone. Is anyone else having this issue?

run it on safemode and see if it still happens, if not then there could be an app messing with the experience.. if still doenst turn on while on call on safemode, then call support.

I've read that some experienced this after an update to the phone app. I had this problem and it turned out something was wrong with the proximity sensor. I downloaded an app to test the phones sensors and it always said near for the proximity sensor. Had an RMA done on it
I am having the same issue...
Funny thing, i can wake my screen well when I'm calling with my Bluetooth device (Alpine player). But if I'm using the phone, the screen stays dead.
They should at least give us an update that would let us to wake the screen manually.

I'm stock with no screen protector just an Incipio dual pro case. I've taken the case off and tried cleaning the phone but the still persists without the case on. I've also tried booting into safe mode and still the same problem occurs. At least now I've went into the settings and turned on power button ends call so I can hang up now. Talked with google support and sent them a bug report awaiting their response.

Screen off/no wake after "on ear" phone call

During phone calls while using the phone on my ear, the screen will dim like normal and touch is not responsive... But after the call, I move the phone away from my ear, the screen will not wake-up and requires waking with power button. I can only recall a handful of times where the phone acted normally after a call...
Anyone else experiencing this? I am rooted w/ magisk and I have verified the proximity sensor is working (using Droid Info app) -
I am turning off adaptive battery not only to see if it helps with this concern, but overall performance and will update w/ changes
Had this happen as well. Not rooted. Can't remember but i vaguely recall this with other versions of android

Same. And it doesn't happen every time.
Right after I posted this, made a phone call and it blacked out again this time no power button, double tap, shake, twist, etc would wake the phone. Eventually after about 2 mins it woke up again...
Possibly unrelated, but about every 1 in 5 reboots my screen won't turn on. Stays black, no back light. The phone still responds to ADB and fastboot commands, but nothing will turn the screen on until I hold down power to restart.
Same here.its happened multiple times. naked Pixel here, not rooted. its annoying.
I've made/received 100 calls since Thursday, and it happened for the first time last night. I was able to get it out of black by accidentally doing a screenshot while trying to reboot.
Happened at least 4 times today. Just noticed an update to the Phone app was released, let's see if that makes a difference.
No screen protector, etc.
honestly after some more calls with this issue, i think my dirty ear and is causing the close proximity reading... after the most recent episode, i went to the droid info app and it was reading the sensor at 0 cm and after wiping the notch off, it started to read correctly (5.0 cm) >>> i dont really want to give the haters another reason to dog the notch but, in my case, i think its going to be an issue. i may switch the "power button to end call" on and see if that will alleviate my issue for now -

Thanks for the heads up. I have unrooted and naked 3 XL. This screen off thing was affecting all calls. If the remote party hung up, I was fine. If I got into someones VM, I had to sit quietly until the call dropped.
I added myself to the Phone app Beta program and updated. After several test calls, I think it's fixed.

Question OnePlus BlackScreen after PhoneCall

Hi,
I have a problem with my OP 9Pro.
After a phone call, the display sometimes stays black and it takes a while before you can use the device again.
Does anyone else have that and, above all, how can I solve the problem?
Many greetings and thanks
Mars
Are you on OOS12? I only experienced that bug in the short time I ran OOS12. One of the main reasons I reverted to OOS11 actually.
Yeah I get this too. From what I can tell, it seems to have something to do with the proximity sensor killing the screen when you put it up to your ear, then hanging when the call ends.
OOS11
Me too. On 11. Thinking it may be from Nova or Adguard. Until I figured out that I could hit the "screen on" button to regain control I would wait till the other person hung up. So, as a workaround that's what I do, hit the button.
That happens when the proximity sensor it's being blocked. If you have any screen protector over the camera notch (where the proximity sensor is) then that's why it's turning the screen off.
If you don't have anything covering the sensor then try making a call on another app (like WhatsApp) to see if the issue persists there too. If not then it might be the dial app, try restarting your phone.
If it happens on many messaging apps, and there's nothing covering the sensor, try downloading a sensor tester app to see if the proximity sensor is being triggered all the time. If it is then it's a hardware issue and you'll have to return your phone a get a new one.

Power button is unresponsive when the phone goes pitch black. Even switching the alert slider to something different doesn't trigger the fingerprint sensor on.
I'll try disabling pocket mode. I also found positive feedback about this when you enable the "Override force-dark" setting in Developer Options. See if that helps.
Has been happening to me from time to time since A12. I just hold volume up, volume down and power button at same time and reboot to recovery and restart from there. That fixes it really quick for me.
Yes, I'm on A12 because I thought it would get better here. But I had the same problem with the A11.
I haven't managed to solve the problem yet.
It also happens on Android 11 but it's not quite as bad here. The display turns on after a little while.
Where is the sensor actually? It's not the camera. It's to the right of the speaker. or?
Hi, Guess!
I got a solution from the Oneplus team. (1800 202 8888) / general phone tech support team helped me with these steps:
1- under setting search reset
2- click on Reset all settings
3- Reset all settings. click it.
As this is a normal reset will not lose your data.
The last option is if this doesn't work then we have to backup all data from the phone and do a factory reset.
or it's a hardware issue.
e-regards!
