Stock Firmwares (SM-P600 and others) - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Q&A, Help & Troubl

Hey everyone.
Been awhile since I've been back here and I wasn't sure about all the new changes.
Couldn't find any information regarding the stock firmwares and if we are allowed to upload them here.
I'll Explain Further:
Stock Samsung firmwares used to be free to download at good speeds from samsung-updates (I think?), but now they go through download services that cost money unless you want to wait 8 hours for a slower download.
There were threads that listed all the stock firmwares bwfore and I was wondering if I could start a thread for downloading all the SM-P600 stock firmwares (and other Note 10.1" 2014 variations)?
Nice to be back and finally have a device I can play with. It's been YEARS :highfive:

Hi h311sdr0id,
i see you are a developer... If you say you wan't to play with that device, does that mean you have intention to build a custom rom or kernel for p600
This would be the best news since 6 month for p600 owners!

Though I'm not a fan of having to wait, it seems a fair comprimise. Typical "freemium" model. Slow is fine for occasional flashers, but the serious ones will want to pay. It costs to host/manage these updates so seems perfectly fair to me...

I am trying to get back into the realm of XDA and get used to how things are (before I had to take a little vacation). The last device I developed on was a Note 3/4..
I had a lot of people pretty pissed off at me for leaving when I did, but it wasn't my choice. So I need to re-clarify a few things with anyone looking for my first post in awhile:
Any insider information I had before this post was made here, is no longer something I can talk about. If you haven't had a chance to look around and read about what happened to me, you should. I am sorry for letting anyone down, but I had to choose my freedom over a device.
Plus, any information I had (including all of the work I had saved on my computers/devices) was taken from me. I have no access to any of it and I will never see it again.

So now that that's out of the way... Yes, I do plan on working on a ROM for the P600.
My work was usually geared towards ODEXED Stock Roms with all the fun stuff available that DEODEX had to offer. Many of the tweaks that were strictly available to DEODEX ROMs back then had to be reverse-coded to work with ODEX ROMs. I spent a lot of time dropping down ROMs from 1.2GB down to 250MB with add-on available. But I ran (and still run) these tiny ROMs on some of my other devices and they work great to this day.
I am working on a new Live AIO Distro (Debian/Ubuntu) for Android Development. That will continue to be my largest project. But I will be working on the P600 exclusively for a while. I just got one as a gift from another DEV.
If there's anything you are interested in specifically, please let me know. I will open a ROM Thread pretty soon to get some more ideas of what people are looking for.

I used to run my ROMs with weekly updates and fixes when they needed them. But for the most part, people didn't have many issues with my ROMs because I would spend a lot of time on them and test them thoroughly before releasing them. But I also kept to only a few devices at a time. Many big developers have many devices they're working on and so it's hard to spend too much time on one or two devices specifically. Only knew a few DEVs that really kept up on devices like hat back in the day.
But, no. I won't need money for anything. I have plenty of resources available to me that won't cost anyone anything. I do this as a hobby.

Thanks for that comprehensive statement. This are great news, because development for p600 was very poor during the last month...
I think the most important things for p600 we would like to have are:
- a stable stock kernel with permissive rights
- development support for cm 13, because many things doesn't work with it like camera, IR Blaster, Screen Mirroring and we have bad battery life. It also isn't compatible with LP 5.1.1 Bootloader (causing sound issues, random reboots etc.)
- A fast and debloatet stock rom with permissive rights, performance and batterylife optimizations
If you would be able to work on only one of these points, you would be a hero for most p600 owners

Any chance you would be willing to work on a sm-607t rom?
Im not cooking since windows mobile, but ill test.
I can also upload a backup of the stock rom to mega so you dont have to wait 8 hrs to download it.

2.3.6 Help w/ Roms & Data Issues?

Im a Noob here guys, so let me appologize in advance...Ive been a little trigger shy about starting this thread to say the least, so here are my issues...
Like a noob I updated my new gs2 right out of the box to 2.3.6 without even considering problems with roms. I was able to gain root access with zedomaxs gs2root.com tutorial, as I did with my last gs2 on original firmware.
I am currently on juggs 4.1 & its working nicley except my data speeds have dropped from 12-15 mbps down to 2-6. My battery life seems to be okay but i dont remember how stock was as i left the gs2 for a short while for the amaze wich had AWFULL battery life, so anything seems great in comparison. I want to get my data speeds corrected, & I also would really like to move to bombaridier rom but im not sure exactly wich roms I will be able to use with the ota upgrade I did? I was going to flash it & see if everything went okay as it seems to be a very attractive rom for my needs, but I would rather not do anymore flashing without learning if there are any risks with flashing roms while on the 2.3.6 firmware, & whether or not I am going to be experiencing issues on all roms with this particular update on my device.
I am also curious as to if I will be able to unroot my gs2 since I rooted it with the new firmware this time.
My final question is are there any stable AOSP roms I could use with this firmware? I am by no means experienced but I have rooted and flashed several roms on my old htc sensation but i have never tried aosp, so i suppose I may just be interested in an opinion on this matter.
I have read alot of info/threads on xda so I dont want to come off as lazy, & my brain is almost overloading with the vast amount of info I read on this AMAZINGLY informative site. I am a person who LOVES to gain knowledge & self educate, so your site has become quite addictive to me over the past 6-8 weeks!
I am very sorry, but I can be a little long winded, & if anyone out there could forgive my lack of understanding and provide me with any advice or guidance on what my options may be, & if I have any possible risks running roms on this firmware, I would be more than happy to click your donate button, as I am so very appreciative of all the free knowledge the great ppl of xda have provided me! I feel lucky to have access to your site, & I am looking foreward to one day becoming a productive & contributing member.

The upgrade to 2.3.6 enables wifi calling and a new radio. So far, I haven't noticed any problems with the update.
I'm not familiar with the root method you used. I used the Odin method to root mine. It is possible to go back to completely stock though. So, you don't have to worry. I believe there is a thread in the general section, or development section about doing so.
There are two CM7 roms in the dev section. Both are basically alpha builds and have some bugs. There are also two roms the have touchwiz removed.
I'm not sure about the data speed issues. Maybe try flashing a different rom and see if it changes?

The method I used to root was odin as well. If I flash bombaridier I would assume I am safe then? I also have my stock root backup, as well as a backup of juggernaut 4.1. I have done the unroot process before, I just was not sure if it would have the same outcome since I rooted with odin on the new firmware. also,am I okay to flash any rom, even though I am on the 2.3.6 firmware or are there any that may cause serious problems being they were probably written for previous firmware versions? THANK YOU so very much for your reply! I dont want to beat a dead horse, I guess I am looking for confirmation that flashing roms on the new firmware, isnt a big no no , or requires any xtra steps....Thanks again to you!

No new development here

I've had my M8 for about 3 months now... As of a month and a half ago I decided that this Sense crap was getting on my nerves. I logged on here only to discover there's almost no discussion, development or anything else going on here. What happened with this device that nobody is doing a 4.4.4 KitKat update or a 5.0 Lollipop AOSP build for it? Did I miss something big that happened here? I don't recall XDA ever being this barron. Especially on an unlockable HTC device.
too many devices
it really has more to do with the fact that there are WAAAAY too many android devices out there. i'm all for the success of android and the phone companies that make them. A few years ago when android was finally getting popular, there were a handful of devices, most developers had the same devices: htc incredible, incredible 2, galaxy, galaxy 2, etc. with everyone having the same phone, mass development took place...now there are so many rootable phones out there it is difficult to get all the devs on one device. if you have 20 developers and 4 phones to choose from you get a lot of development on each phone....if you have 20 devs and 20 phones to choose from....well, you get it. best advice is when a new device comes out DO NOT run out and buy it the first minute you can slam the money down on the counter and walk away with it. wait a few days...a week...maybe 2....check back on XDA and see what device starts getting the most development. go buy that phone. =]
on a side note, there is a fair amount of development that goes on in the world wide m8 forum area that this forum stems off of. if you read the posts it is easy to adapt your US m8 to use any of those roms. also, viper rom has a decent amount of constant development as well. i have been using this rom for quite awhile and to be honest...it rocks. if youre not using it give it a try. there are tons of customizations to keep you happy =)
go check out the M8 section http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8
After rooting and flashing your recovery you can install pretty much any M8 ROM. Sure the T-mo has WiFi calling but I'm not sure what else it has.
OR you can run your own launcher, get the xposed architecture and start tweaking your stock ROM to do what you want it to do. That was the best method for me as it still runs incredibly stable and I was able to get the majority of the features I wanted like loosing most of sense.

That's it right there. All gsm M8 development is over on there. Also I few sense roms have wifi calling in them.

[Q] is it just me or..

Has development slowed down for our device? Since lollipop got released, there hasn't been many new updates for existing roms or new roms. I know, if I want it, I should develop a rom myself. But, I've never been good at program languages so, I depend on the fine folks here on XDA. I appreciate all their efforts. But, again I ask, has development slowed?
The device is aging, M9 is supposed to be revealed tomorrow. I'm not even sure if they will make the 5.1 Android for M8, and that is much needed, seeing how buggy Lollipop is. I seriously regret updating, I wish I had enough sense to stay wit KitKat, that worked great on my phone.

ViperOneM8 has been updated three times in the last two weeks, with another update to come out in the next few days. Although two of them mostly addressed bug fixes, there were also new features added.
There has been a couple of lollipop nightly builds for this device. To be honest, I don't really notice a slowdown of development.

No i do not share the feeling development slowed down, then again why should a developer spend so much time on these builds when sense 7 is around the corner. I think they pick the most valuable tweaks and parts of optimization.
My 2 cents

Development for the J4

Usually when a New J series is out, our community of great developers are all over it finding ways to root and making rooms. Since the J4 has been out for a few months there hasn't been any sort of news or updates. Are there any teams working on it?
I'm afraid that the possibility is slim, since the J4 is not widely released (do correct me if I'm wrong) in the US, UK, or other big-market countries, but rather released in smaller-market countries in Africa, Asia, etc, and even so released rather quietly w/out major press releases. So unless the phone is widely released (relative to other Galaxy phones out there), I'm inclined to believe that such teams would have little to no access to the J4, and thus no development to progress for it.
(Believe me, I'm remaining optimistic that at least an unofficial recovery might be on the works, but there won't be much progress unless the J4 is more widely used/picked-up)
Or, you can learn how to do it yourself.
Not the TWRP porting, but you can definitely MOD your stock ROM to add features Samsung annoyingly disable for not being a "premium" device.
You don't need to know much of coding, you can learn as you go. When the J2 Prime was released (and even to this day) there aren't any custom ROMs so I had to teach myself and I've accomplished great things
Just wait for TWRP and then the doors will open, you'll see

Huh, that's interesting; I'll surely take a look.
Could you further elaborate on the "features" that Samsung disabled? (I don't use a lot of Samsung G's built-in features, so I'm not too knowledgeable on such; tried Google-searching, only came up w/ disabling apps, so that didn't really help...)

For starters, things like edge screen or scroll capture (things that I use a heck of a lot)
I found it funny is that all it took as to change a bit of code here and there, add the right apps and edge screen was working perfectly on the J2 Prime (a very low-end phone).
Samsung went out of their way to delete this feature which is pretty ridiculous if you ask me.
Themes were also disabled for this device, but after reading a few guides I was able to implement a ROM control that allows the user to change the color to their liking
The dev community is always willing to lend a hand, just as long as you're not lazy and expect everything to be put out for you.
I feel the J4 can make a dev out of someone looking to add more functionality to their device (the J2 Prime made a dev out of me )
Ok, so the TWRPBuilder's experimental TWRP build (huge thanks to @yshalsager for this miracle) is on TWRPBuilder's site: twrpbuilder.github.io/downloads/twrp/
Like any TWRP builds, there is ABSOLUTELY zero guarantee that it would work (I tried the first one & it didn't work, haven't had the chance to test the latest one yet)

The J4 uses identical chipset as the J5 prime G570F/M/DS.
I have both and they are great phones for their segment.
Sadly neither are well supported by ROM developers, due to the Exynos chip, I think.

@yshalsager did a test custom recovery for J4 (via TWRPBuilder): https://twrpbuilder.github.io/downloads/twrp/
Have been unable to test it atm (stuck in 7-day jail); if you want to have a go at it & let him know the results, go right ahead!

Yeah that's the 7-day "jail" I was talking about - theoretically you have to leave your phone on non-stop (no reboots, no shutdowns) for 7 whole days straight, then the OEM Unlock option should become available in Dev Settings (it's a confusing security measure by Samsung on Oreo devices)

Dude

Do we have TWRP yet?

Sorry for wasting space here, everyone. I was just wondering if the 3a XL has TWRP yet. I just ordered one and the first thing I do on a new device is install TWRP and root.
Thanks
You can root, but no TWRP yet. The 3 and 3 XL took just about a month. Shouldn't be too long now.
Troy owned a 3XL making it a sure thing for sooner rather than later. Someone with the knowledge could have made it within a fairly short time period since the work is already partially done over in flagship land:; An example would be the OP7, it already has TWRP, a half dozen ROMs, a couple kernals. I'm not saying it isn't coming to this device, it probably is given time. You do have to have someone working on it though or it never happens. Flar2 for instance has a 3aXL and thanks to him we have his kernal. This is how it works, the benefits of these various ROMs, TWRP, kernals, come from a fairly small pool of developers and if one or more of them does not pick up the gauntlet you've got handy tips on these pages but not much else.
Lets us hope that a few of them have seen the value in these devices...
Pixel 3a and XL will have TWRP.
Even the $100 Android phones have TWRP.
It is a matter of when, my guess would be within the next two weeks from now.

I keep trying to make time to sit down and do an unofficial TWRP, but Everytime I do, something comes up. It's kinda killing me ...

Seems like LOS will come for 3a(XL), so I bet we will see a twrp build soon.
Out of curiosity, because I come from a Samsung: what are the main differences between Pixel's stock firmware and LOS?
As far as I know LOS have a kind of dark mode already enabled (coming to stock with Q) and some privacy option added?
Is there anything more than this?

Out of curiosity, what makes you say it seems like we'll get LOS for the 3a(XL)? It would be a 100% buy for me if that were the case, just wasn't sure if a notable dev has picked one up and mentioned planning to do so or something and I've missed it, thanks!

I'm really happy when the custom roms come out
What I was trying to say gents is that this device doesn't appear to be all that popular to me. Right now there are 627 threads open on the OP7 section compared to 62 here and that phone came out after. I'm BTW not counting the advertising section called reviews which will typically have 30, 40, 50 threads for every device.. I have never seen a less active device section on this forum than this one and I go back to before android started and have had all the Nexus devices except one, all the Galaxy S and Note devices accept 2 and I'm not going to list all the rest of the random devices I've had because you get the idea. I'm not sure what this phone is doing in terms of sales volume but I am sure that if they are being sold they are not being sold to enthusiast like us because if they were those owners would be here. I think some of you folks are kidding yourselves about the amount of development that is going to go on here. This is one of those cases where I would like nothing better than to be wrong but I'm not seeing any crow eating in my future.
I certainly hope your wrong but, I am afraid as you are that this device,,,,albeit a great one,,,,isnt getting the attention by devs. I know it is still too soon to tell and all that. But, if you go off past popular devices, and how fast development sprang up since it was released, this one seems lagging. Lets hope the future is bright for this device and dev support.

I bought the not xl version- I get the same vibe you're picking up. I think it's selling, but probably not to many enthusiasts as other phones. Maybe people are buying it because they actually went to use it as a phone? I think after the nexus line crashed, I think people have looked elsewhere for development phones. I don't have a one plus phone, but they seem to release kernels and factory images, which helps development. I'm sure google will do the same.
In other news, I've built aosp and los for sargo. Full disclosure- I haven't flashed anything yet, I haven't even opened the box; so I can't say how well the ROMs run. I'm sure bonito will build just fine too. aosp just needed the drivers/binaries from the website. For los, I used the extract files script and the stock images. The point is that we seen to have ROM support already, but maybe just low interest from the modding community.
Could it be the forums aren't hopping specifically *because* there's so little dev at this point?
I'd expect it to be light when TWRP isn't even around yet. I would expect it to pick up quite a bit once TWRP drops, though.

I do wish the forums were consolidated for the two devices. Then it would seem busier . I think there would be a bit of synergy since the two devices share so much. Sorry for the OT. I'll dust off my twrp repos and see if I can cook something up.
I was surprised they didn't combine them and just have two different development sub-sections, I've been on other devices where they did that and it seemed to work well. As to the lack of TWRP or other development I don't really think that's it although it's certainly a contributor. IMO you would have many more people asking general questions as you can see everywhere else, there are a lot of people who come to XDA but don't root. It really appears the either the phone isn't in too many hands or those hands belong to those pesky non phone people.

Dirty Unicorns has an RC out for bonito (3a XL) dated 23 May - you can grab it now. (According to IDM, it is 1.197 GB large.)
Nothing new on the TWRP front for bonito - official or otherwise.
Many of the phones out there seem to have come from a T-Mobile trade-in offer that made the devices nearly free after credits. Problem is that for most of these devices, they'll be carrier locked and in turn bootloader locked for a while. Users have resigned themselves to unrooted optimizations until these locks are gone. Hopefully development will mirror all four of the 3rd gen devices as they pretty similar.
Sargo's top of my list right now for a phone upgrade (my S4 got me thru so many years), but without TWRP and LOS I just can't bring myself to buy it.
Never done any work on android before (besides flashing of course), but I'll throw my hat in the ring and try to get a TWRP build together this weekend.
Mind if I DM ya @gee one when I inevitably get stuck somewhere?
