Hi,
I plan on using my desire in the car and playing music through my car stereo's aux input. But I dont really want to be picking up the phone to skip forward and back through tracks. The headset that ships with the phone has great inline controls that work with spotify. So I was wondering if anyone knows of a company that makes a cable that has a 3.5mm jack at both ends (i.e. one end into the phone, the other into the car stereo) but also has inline controls. I could then find a way of mounting the inline control somewhere on the dash.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
Paddy
I have done this in the past by cutting the headphone ends off a cable and then soldering this to a 3.5mm jack plug available from electronics shops etc, not too much of a job to do, but will prob mean you have to find another htc headset with the controls if you want to keep your original headset
Haven't seen this no, but it should be easy to fix.
Either just solder the cable yourself, or just buy a 3,5 to 3,5 cable and insert it. Should solve your issues. Just ordered the Griffin SmartTalk which has inline controls and a 3,5mm jack output myself, it had good reviews for the iPhone and should work well with the my Desire aswell.

Let us know how you get on with it please.
My car is a few years old and doesn't have a place to plug in my EVO directly for playing music through the speakers.
What are some of my other options? I've have tried the gizmos that try to send the music to an FM station and play it that way, but those were very static-y and unreliable.
Any other ideas?
Do you have a cassette deck?

A cassette deck now that funny stuff. Do you think anyone in the US still has a cassette deck? I remember the day metal cassettes were the best man they sounded awesome.
I really think your best bet is to buy a new deck. If your evo has the DSP manager it sounds great over bluetooth.

Actually, my 2007 Lexus GS350 has a cassette player, 6 disk changer and no aux port. I use the cassette adapter for IPOD and Evo.
My Ford Windstar 2000 has a cassette tape player, that's what I use
Ha my old 66 Ford Fairlane still has the dual 8-tracks I put in it way back when. Course it has been garaged for years, but i'm going to have to go see if they still work now! Had two of them so I could rewind one while still listening to another.
you need an aux input adapter wired into your cd player/stereo for BEST sound.
goto your local car audio shop and ask, they'll know what you're talking about.
PIE is a great brand if you want to install yourself.
http://www.pie.net/
buy yourself a composite rca -> 3.5mm male adapter cable and connect it all up.
i got one in my 04 lincoln ls, i used my evo as my mp3 player and music player in the car. best auto investment ever, lol

Thanks will look into it
Can you tell us what year/model car you have and what stereo option (if any)? There may be a way to wire a bluetooth adapter in via external CD changer inputs if that option exists on your factory head.
This is what i use: http://www.amazon.com/Cygnett-GrooveTraveller-Transmitter-Charger-Adapter/dp/B001HNDSIK
it transmits and charges my ipod and has a AUX in on the side for my EVO. works great for me.

i have a sirius satellite radio (sportster 4 or 5) that has an aux jack in it. i connect a 3.5mm cable to it and the headphone jack of my phone and get perfect sound! only thing i have to do is pause the radio turn media volume up on my phone and it is just like a direct connection to my car radio.
A battery operated FM transmitter works without static, but they are increasingly difficult to find.
Get a FM modulator, they are cheap & easy to install. The sound will be better than most transmitters.

I hook my Evo up to my aux on my head unit through the headphone jack to play music on the sd card or Slacker and it's always low sounding. Much lower than my regular cd's.

I second this recommendation. I bought the Schosche modulator from Amazon for ~$28. Yeah, a new head unit with Bluetooth, HD, and aux in would have been nicer but also would cost a lot more.
The kit came with a small trim bezel containing the jack & a power switch; the bezel has a small piece of double-stick tape to mount somewhere on your dash. I pulled the jack & switch out, and mounted them directly in my dash, so it looks a bit more "finished."
The audio sounds good. There is a very slight hiss/crackle that seems to be coming from my car charger. If the charger is disconnected the sound is clean. The hiss is so small that I can't really hear it when there is music/podcast playing.
I would like to make a custom patch cable so I can wire in a microphone mounted up near my visor. This way I won't have to unplug the audio line when I get an incoming call.
I'm also using the Mountek mount described in another thread. It works well. Overall I'm quite happy. It didn't cost much and took less than an hour to install. I'm really enjoying Pandora & podcasts now during my commute time!
Hey everyone, I've been searching for a cheaper alternative to the expensive desktop dock samsung sells. It will mostly be used as a clean audio out for speakers and headphones, charging and sync would be a plus. Does anyone know of a good alternative out there? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
im no pro at this, but it seems like the best kinda thing is gonna have to use the 3 mm audio jack as a trick to do it.
as an example, if you ebay "Loud Stereo Dock Station Speaker for iPod iPhone 3G/4 4S MP3 Android Phone 3.5MM"
I have a digital AV Receiver with HDMI inputs and bought the HDMI dock from Samsung for less then 15€. The digital audio signal via HDMI can be used even without video output.

Yea that's basically what I'm looking for, a dock with 3.5mm audio out and has the ability to charge + sync would be nice. I actually found a cheap 10$ one on ebay and a 30$ one on amazon from samsung themselves which isn't too bad, both that claim to do just that, so we'll see. I would post links but the forum wont let me until l I have 10 posts. Apparently there's an app that will allow me to use the usb audio out function straight from the phone which would be awesome, then I can bring in a DAC and amp into the mix.

Yea I thought of that as well, and I may get one of those too to hook up to my hdtv but as for speakers and headphones the 3.5mm audio out would be key
Hi!
I have the Toyota corolla 2008 with a built in radio that doesn't have usb or 3.5mm.
I want to buy an FM transmitter so I can play music from my Galaxy s3 in the car.
Do you recommend any specific one?
I prefer it will be charged from the lighter in the car, and if possible, to charge my phone as well.
Thanks!
I had one from wall mart it was only 13 bucks it works decently but no matter which one you get there will always be a little static. I personally can't stand static so I just installed a head unit.

Car stereo's with built in Bluetooth and AUX inputs can be found for as little as $80 on sale these days. But I can understand if that is out of your budget.
Best thing to do is go to www.amazon.com and do a search for what you're looking for. Then sort the results by user reviews. Then read some reviews to see if you find what will meet your needs.
If I had any experience with the FM transmitters, I'd offer advice. But I have none to give. Sorry.
I drive a 2005 Toyota Matrix, which is very close to your car. I use this kit and works perfectly. I also use a set of rca spltters to have an open 3.5mm input (in-case i need to connect another deivce) and an iBolt dock's 3.5mm hard wired behind the dash for a dedicated connection for my S3
I have an 04 Mazda 6 (Atenza for you Europeans) with a built in radio. My solution was to hook up a Parrot mki 9200 to the radio for Bluetooth (and aux, USB, or pre iPhone 5 connector).
might not sound true, but it is: my car does not have an audio system, and it is old that installing a system will cost me more than I want to spend now, so...
I am looking for portable speakers to use in the car, to install myself somewhere (separate speakers or a single block), that are either wired or bluetooth. but I want them to be loud enough to override the car noises.
Last year I got a Samsung YA-BS3000 blutetooth speaker (on a big sale), but returned them immediately because the volume was lower than my devices internal speaker.
What portable speakers can provide good sound volume and quality? 95% of the time I listen to podcasts, so I don't need music pro speakers.
I checked online and found good reviews about the JBL flip or JBL Micro II, but none of the reviews say if they are suitable for car usage.
I am ok to pay up to $100 or so for good speakers that can make my drive less annoying.
Any tips are welcome.
I'd consider getting one of those 12v lighter adaptors that lets you plug in standard electrical cords, and buy a non portable speaker that you can plug in to your phone via the 3.5mm aux jack.
You'll likely get the best boom for your buck that way.
Otherwise, I've used an iHome Bluetooth speaker that got decently loud for use even in a warehouse.
Alternatively, if volume is the problem, get a speaker you plug in via the aux, and buy a cheap headphone amp, like a Fiio E6 or E5.

Wow, thanks for the variety of solutions.
I went with the first idea, but went with a desktop/laptop speakers that are USB powered, bought for €10, and I have a lighter adapter to USB, and from the shop till home the sound was ok, now I have to install them with hidden cables and try.
will evaluate other ideas. and btw, I will read now your headphone buying guide....
