I wonder if anyone can advise how this problem might be fixed:
I have a fire-tv stick in my bedroom the latest version which has a voice remote and connects using WiFi direct instead of bluetooth. I'm using 2.4Ghz wifi (using a TalkTalk hg633 super router). I can't use 5Ghz because the signal to my bedroom isn't good enough on 5Ghz. On 2.4Ghz the link score from inSSIDer is 91 with the fire-tv stick unplugged, with a signal of -50dBm. With the fire-tv stick on a WiFi Direct AP appears on inSSIDer with a signal of -39dBm (ie stronger than my normal wifi signal). The link score drops to 71.
If I test download speeds and pings, then with WiFi direct off, i get decent downloads speeds (around 20Mbps) and 18ms pings in my bedroom, in the lounge its a little higher. With Wi-Fi direct on, download speeds drop below 7mbps, sometimes 1mbps, pings increase to 200ms (although I have seen 10,000ms) and the connection often disconnects so the download speed test or ping is unable to complete. (I get about 2 tests that work out of 6, the others fail due to connection issues).
The upshot of all this is that I can't get a reliable streaming service on my fire-tv stick. especially in the evening. The network often disconnects, or slows to a crawl so I get frequent buffering, inability to stream at all or a poor quality picture. In the lounge, I often find my PC disconnects when wifi direct is on though streaming is less of a problem (because there the wifi signal is about 5dBM greater than the WIfi-Direct signal
I contacted amazon, and they suggested changing the channel of my wifi so it isn't on the same channel a Wifi Direct. That doesn't work because the WiFi Direct signal follows my wifi onto the same channel.
I can't use a lan cable (no option for this on a fire-tv stick, and I shouldn't have to in any case). I don't want to add extra extenders / APs to my wifi network as that might just make things worse.
Does anyone know of any way to switch off WiFi direct and use bluetooth for the remote or the FireTV app on my phone instead? Or to decrease the power of the wifi direct signal, or any other solution?
I wonder about switching to an older fire-stick with bluetooth remote - but that I think would mean I lose the voice search facility?
If I swapped to a full Fire TV with voice remote - do they use bluetooth or Wifi Direct?
Same problem. Not as dire a situation because it's in my kid's bedroom and not mine. :silly: But it interferes with the WiFi signal in areas that are closer to her room than my home router.
Not sure why AMZ chose to use the same channel as the FireTV stick talks to your WiFi network on to do their communication to their remote. That seems like a really bad design - if it's messing the 2 of us up, it has to be doing the same for a whole lot of people.
I tried changing my home WiFi from channel 11 to 1 in troubleshooting and had the same experience as you - the FireTV stick's WiFi changed right along with it to continue to clobber my home WiFi signal. Been through the menus in FireTV stick - no way I can see to change its behavior. Google search led me here.

Whilst I stand by everything I said, in attempting to get Amazon to replace my remote with one that used bluetooth instead of wifi-direct, they sent me exactly the same remote in replacement. It still uses wifi-direct. However, it has worked fine, despite being on the same channel. That suggests that some remotes are faulty and causing or exacerbating the problem. Exactly why that would be I don't know, but it's all working fine for me now.
Roku has been doing this for years Here is a link to there form maybe amazon will listen I just got a new one for another room but no network problems and is faster on menu loading so I can live with it.
You're always gonna have problems with a ton of stuff on 2.4ghz. If your router has 5ghz, I would recommend reorganizing if possible, or getting a stronger router. 5ghz means no headaches, no problems with other things, controllers\remote work fine, etc.

i'll try this a bit later when i get the chance, but isn't it common to have some interference if data is transmitting for both since they're both operating on 2.4ghz? also, what headset are you using? bt 1.2 should be better than 1.1

I'm glad i saw this thread. I'm having the same issue. I cannot stream music to my motorola ht820 bluetooth stereo headset if i use wifi. It just keeps stopping and freaks out on me. I was having issues streaming videos to my dash via wifi and using the headset also. I could not stream 100kbps videos over wifi! I thought the phone just wasn't powerful enough. (although it's not.. I could stream 300kbps videos on my old hp 3615 via wifi fine.)
I just was able to stream a video at 300kbps fine without bluetooth turned on using wifi and it worked fine. Grr!!
BT and wifi both use the same frequency.
I think you shoud try an other channel for the wifi. It may solve your problem.

Internet via WiFi - Wireless Access Points Only
I am not subscribing to the data service on my cellular net. I only want to be able to access the net and email when I am in range of my WAP at home/work or at my favorite hot spots. I've got the WiFi settings so that I am connecting to my WAP and can see the SSID when it connects.. I've tried adjusting the settings in the IE options and am at the point where once in a while (1 out of 8 or so ) I can open access one page of a web site.. but can not navigate any further. If I type a different URL in it says locating and loading then times out.... what did I miss???

I've seen this as well. Playing around earlier today, I installed Opera Mini. Opera works fine over wifi or edge. I believe that the issue involves one or more IE bugs involving either the size (fragmentation?) of cache and/or scripts.
Also, Opera Mini isn't a solution (yet) either. It works great once installed and launched from the installer - but has to be uninstaller and reinstalled to work after you exit.

I run into this problem all the time at my college and at my home. I turn on my wifi and the phone defaults to the network instead of wifi. I am on cingular with the 8125, I was using I/S PL 1.08 i just updated to cingular rom 2.24.10.1 WWE. I have tried IE, Opera, Mozilla (Minimo) and another i forget the name of. In all I preferred Opera but I feel Mozilla will be the best once the bugs are gone.
Oh yah and when I try and connect to the wifi network at my school they require a redirect to login through bluesocket. That is just too difficult for my little wizard and I rarely get through that system.
External antenna jack on Excaliber/Dash... is it just for GSM? or also WiFi?
Anyone had experience with the external antenna jack on the back of the Dash (under the mirror button)? Just wondering if using this connector would improve performance on WiFi? or is it designed only for GSM reception?

yes, it is possible to change these settings (or at least the IP adress). I have read about it, but can't remeber where. It's possible to chnge it somewhere in the registry, can't be changed directly through settings. If I find it, where I read about it, I will post it here ...
As I remember the external is designed for car holder external antenna, not for WiFi. You may find at most of the GSM mobile back also have this.

Above poster is correct, it's for GSM only. Like I said over at HoFo, unless you're lost in the backwoods, I don't think it's going to help much. Plus, it looks a tad silly!

Reason I asked... we want to be able to access realtime weather conditions while at a remote nature facility on a barrier island here on the West Coast of Florida -- you know, like hurricanes There is a weak WiFi signal from an access point about 1/4 mile away. I simply wanted to establish a stronger link by using an external antenna.
So although it might have looked silly, it was to be a quick fix for instant weather updates (like radar), when needed.

Hi, with my stock htc s620, establishing a connection to a wifi network that is already saved (home & work), takes around 1 to 2 mins.
What often happens also is that it goes to sleep before even connecting (with me waiting in IE or mail to clic on a favorite or do a send & receive action).
I can't understand this since a nokia n80 will take seconds and it's almost instantaneous on my macbook.
Are there any tricks or software that can accelerate this (unless I'm the only one to have this problem)?
Seems to be a problem of your hardware or a configuration problem. I have energy save mode enabled and usually it takes two or three seconds to connect, sometimes up to ten seconds, if it has extremly low WiFi-Signal.
interesting, I'm going to investigate on the software part first... You really think it could be a hardware issue?
What's sure is that once the connection is established, it's fast and doesn't drop.

I've been having a few relatively minor (but hopefully solvable) problems with WiFi roaming and association with my Epic 4G Touch. My current baseband version is EL13.
At home, I have two access points to improve coverage. One of them is a relatively new 802.11n/g/b D-Link router. This is the one connected to my modem and set to router mode. The other is an older 802.11g/b Linksys router set to access point only mode connected to the other router via ethernet. In order to allow easy roaming between the two, I have both APs set to the same SSID and security settings. I have them set on channels 1 and 11 respectively to avoid interference (most of my neighbors use the intermediate channels).
With laptops, roaming works well. Not perfectly, possibly because of the lack of 802.11n on the second AP, but they automatically reassociate to the router with a stronger signal at a reasonable difference in strength. There's rarely a time when the link speed falls below 30 mbps.
With my E4GT, roaming is more hit-and-miss. For some reason, once it's connected to an AP, it doesn't like to reassociate until it loses its current signal completely. This can be a problem when I reach the outer reaches of either AP's signal zones. With the 802.11n AP in particular, the E4GT tends to stay connected even when the link speed (as stated by the router) is 1 mbps. The actual performance is, of course, even worse. Latency is at least 500 ms, and often times, data isn't transmitted at all. I might as well be on 1xRTT. This happens when I'm in the same room as the other AP.
Another annoying quirk is that the ET4G seems to prioritize the 802.11n AP over the 802.11g one when it makes its initial association. When I turn WiFi on in the room with the older router, half the time, my phone decides to connect to the very weak 802.11n signal instead of the full bar signal from the AP in the room.
So, my questions:
Has anyone else noticed this problem?
Is there a way to increase the threshold signal strength before the phone tries to reassociate? This would hopefully make roaming more functional.
Is there a way to de-prioritize 802.11n signals, or alternatively, disable 802.11n connectivity altogether? I don't want to disable it in my router because the extra bandwidth comes in handy for my PCs, but 130 mbps is unnecessary for a phone.
Wow you must have a huge house lol.... Maybe you could try adjusting the transmit power strength on one or both of the routers so that the signal will drop off completely and switch to the other access point. Hope I could help.

I have upgraded a few months ago to Samsung's ICS 4.0.3 stock rom but rooted on my 989, and have noticed that when I pair my bluetooth headphones and begin listening to music, the Wifi hotspot cuts out (ssid disappears, lose IP address on computer). This case is also reproducible if I do the reverse. Eg. Start fresh (BT headphones not connected), and I start my Wifi hot spot, get the PC, or playbook or other device to connect to the Wifi. I can ping -t google or similar, without issue or any interruptions. The second I turn on on my bluetooth headset and it connects to the phone, the ping takes a dump, times out, and I lose IP connectivity to the phone's 192.168.43.1 IP. My BT headset is the RF-MAB2 for what it's worth, and this issue does not happening when using regular 3.5m stereo headphones in the headphone jack.
Is there any known solution or work around to this? I don't recall this being a problem in Android v3 honeycomb, as I did the exact same thing without issue.
Any ideas or suggestions? Can I somehow pull the tether Java jar app out from honeycomb and use it in ICS?

Before you go ahead and pull an app from an older Android version check to see if you are having the same issue with another Bluetooth device connected with your phone. I am on a custom ROM so I'm not able to reproduce your issue. Although, I have been able to use a PS3 controller through Bluetooth to my phone while Wi-Fi was on, without Wi-Fi losing connectivity.
Also, if you have a capable router, try changing between 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz to see if that works. Even though Bluetooth is using a different frequency, there is a chance that it is interfering with your Wi-Fi signal, especially if you have a lot of devices connected to the router at the same time. You can also try changing the channel of your router and see if that does anything.
There may be other solutions but what I have mentioned is worth attempting to start troubleshooting your issue. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions, I will look for another BT device; I hadn't thought about that one. I usually only use tethering when im away from home, so there aren't any SSID's that show up in the wifi networks that should be interferring. Perhaps your onto something with my specific BT device and the new ICS not liking something about it, I will try an ebay ad2p / bt 3.5 mm adapter and see if it works any better, as they're cheaper than ~50 for a trial and error at futureshop.

My firestick says it is connected to the WiFi, but not the internet. "Home is not available". Sometimes it connects and sometimes it doesn't. I have moved it around but nothing seems to matter. It won't stay connected. I'm confused how it can be connected to WiFi, but not the internet. Can anyone help me please?
I have the 3rd generation Amazon Fire TV. I notice this happens a lot with the FoxNow app as well as when streaming from Amazon Video. I don't see this with Netflix or when I stream from my Plex Media server. Mainly only with Amazon Video and FoxNow. It keeps telling me that Amazon Home is unavailable and it shows in the network status that it's connected to WiFi but not the internet. I'm running on the 5ghz band on channel 153 and all my other devices connected to the router work when the Fire TV states there's no internet. I've unregistered and re-registered my device as well as rebooted it several times, but the issue keeps coming back.
It doesn't happen all the time. There will be some days where there's not an issue with it. But when it happens, I have to reboot the Fire TV or unregister and re-register it on Amazon. I've ran a WiFi scanner and it tells me channel 153 is the best one for me based on my area. The Fire TV is just a few feet away from my WiFi router. I'm using the power adapter that came with the Fire TV in a wall outlet as it won't work with my TV's USB port (not powerful enough).
Our router is brand new (NetGear Firehawk R7000) and our cable modem is fine as well. Like I said, everything else works fine after the Fire TV loses connection.
We only have a 30mbps connection. Could that be it? Didn't seem to bother us when we had a Roku, but I wanted to get something that used the 5ghz channel so I went with the Fire TV since it was on sale.

I've had this same issue for a year with no solution. I'm stuck on channel 36 which is the most crowded in my neighborhood
Well, I bit the bullet and purchased the LAN adapter for the Fire TV device and since this past Monday (4/23/2018) after hooking it up directly to my router and not using WiFi, I have not had a single issue. Before that, over the weekend and the past week, I had numerous hang ups and loss of internet (at least, the Fire TV said I had no internet but I did) after watching a movie, or a couple of TV shows.
I'm really thinking the issue is tied to heat (it heats up after using it for one movie or a couple of TV shows) and that causes an issue with the WiFi chip in the device. Since moving to using a LAN cable instead, there doesn't appear to be an issue with this now.
Also, I've noticed where lag/delay between audio and video that slowly creeps in as time moves on while watching a movie has appeared to have disappeared as well. Definitely, something is up with my WiFi. Not sure if it's my router or how it's configured (Netgear Nighthawk), but I have checked various settings (no dual band being used and only used 5ghz band, but the same issue was also on 2.4ghz band when I tried that) and nothing fixed the issue until moving off of WiFi.
I do have a repeater in the house for my wife because her laptop has a crappy wifi controller in it so she can't get a good signal upstairs whereas the rest of us have no issues. But, that's not always plugged in. Only when she needs to use her laptop upstairs so when she's not using it, it's turned off/unplugged from the wall. It also only uses the 2.4ghz band.
But in any case, using the LAN adapter appears to have solved my issue. Only time will tell, but the loss of internet via the Fire TV would happen daily. Now, after 3 days, it hasn't happened once. Knocking on wood that this fixes my issue.
UPDATE 4/26/2018:
Day 3 of using the Fire TV with the LAN adaptor. Watched over 5 hours of Dexter and not one issue. I watch it via Netflix and usually, after a few viewings, Netflix goes into buffering mode. Hasn't happened once this week since getting the LAN adapter. It definitely seems to have fixed my issue.

Ya you're right about going with lower / middle of the bands. I noticed this with 2.4ghz band too, I had it set to auto in my router settings and it picked 11, but AFTV didn't like anything 10 or over, so just changed band in router settings manual @1 or 6 and no issues.
Well, over a week now and not ONE single hang up and need to reboot. Definitely something with the WiFi in the device if you ask me. Interference, possibly brought on when the device gets too hot maybe? I dunno. Problem solved if you ask me! So happy now. Love my FireTV even more!
How can I test my WiFi connection to see how clean it is? I don't mean how strong it is... it's strong as heck thanks to the app WiFi Analyzer.
Plus, I'm literally two feet from the WiFi router.
But ever since I switched from cable to fiber Internet, my cellphone has had WiFi issues. Not sure if Fiber is the reason but it was around that time.
I've configured the WiFi router for bridged-mode and am using my old WiFi router that worked great with my phone.
I've tried stock Android, Dirty Unicorns and Ressurection Remix and all three have the same issue even though I'm doing a full-format in between ROM.
Like, connecting to Messages for Web (Google Messages) on my PC, it refuses to authenticate with my phone if I'm on WiFI. But the moment I switch to Cellular, Messages for Web picks up my phone right away.
And Pandora will time out if I'm on WiFi. But if I switch to Cellular, it connects right away. And sometimes after switching back to WiFi it will keep playing.
But speed test apps are all getting me low ms ping and blazing fast download speeds on WiFi.

Hahah, I just realized there was a thin metal plate resting on top of the test WiFi router I implemented.
The metal plate was severely much of the WiFi signal. I never noticed it because the WiFi router was above eye level.
So, the AT&T Fiber WiFi router sucked but the test WiFi router is working fine after I removed the metal plate that someone left sitting on top of it.
I have similar issue, but not consistent. Wifi is connected, everything seems fine, but sometimes it stops responding as if wifi is connected but no internet. As I switch off wifi internet starts working immediately or I have to wait a few seconds and refresh whatever I was using(browser, whatsapp etc).
Like you I am using fiber and to make sure if it is router based, I switched from crappy Huawei to a bit better Xiaomi router. But issue still there.
But there is some improvement if I select a relatively empty channel on 2.4ghz or 5ghz(neighbors dose not know about 5ghz too much). 2.4Ghz there is always problem but 5Ghz seems better(range sucks yes) and I think problem is based on channels.
I switched to fiber long ago and cable was more smoother but cable modem or router was quality, here ISP's are using very bad routers based on low end Huawei or TP-Link.
