Is anyone else annoyed that you can't send a contact from the stock SMS app? I love the standard SMS but yet have to have a third party SMS app installed just for this purpose. From the stock SMS you can attach a few things but not a contact. And even from the phone app you can send but through email...not SMS.
Nothing major...just felt like griping about something I guess.
On a side note android keeps getting better and better. I don't see myself even going back to a non nexus phone!

I totally agree it's silly this is not factory android option. I can tell this is a general complaint and you weren't really looking for an app, but check this out:
share contracts via sms
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=shareContacts.NS.com
it's not really an "app" it just adds the menu option to share contracts thru messaging app. you still use stock messaging. I have used this since froyo days. it's super lightweight, you'll hardly notice it's even there...

Yup, I've been shocked time and time again that it hasn't already been added since I first started using Android with Froyo.
Which is weird if you've been using dumbphones for the last 15 years I think most of them could do this.

Wow. Thanks man! I was not expecting a solution....or a thanks for that matter. That's what I love about this community.
Problem solved!

I'm interested in people with direct experience using apps on the N7 that enable text messaging over a WiFi connection. I'm interested in ones that truly allow you to send & receive messages to/from cell phones - not ones dependant upon email (as I believe gtalk is).
PS - The UI has to be easy to use, as this is getting setup on an N7 for my Father-in-Law - and he's 62.

Only app I use is tablet talk. You can connect via WiFi or Bluetooth. It can send and receive MMS also. It is the best app I have used. I use it daily. It is $2.99 I believe but well worth the price.

Really? I've always thought there were apps available that allowed true WiFi messaging. Some of the ones I've been looking at are:
HeyWire
textPlus
Talkatone
In the reading I've done so far, these all seem to be apps that allow one to do what I'm aiming for. I started this topic thread to see if anyone on the N7 has either direct experience with any of these, or any other apps that are similar in function/purpose.
You're saying that even these require a phone to be tethered through WiFi, or BT though?

This is not true. CLOUD SMS is an app that does not require blue tooth, or for the phone and tablet to be connected to the same Wifi. It is simple to use, your phone can be on data, or wifi(doesn't have to be same location), and you can send and receive from phone or tab. It cost 99 cents in the play store. I've followed it through the beta process here on xda and I would highly recommend it.

Thanks for the quick reply. I looked this app up and read about it. This app looks like it does require a tethered phone. Is that true in your experience with it, or is there a way to use it independently of a phone?

I misunderstood your request. I apologize. Yeah it requires both phone and tablet to be on the same WiFi network in order to use for SMS/MMS.

The OP is talking about texting from a tablet over WiFi with no phone at all.
Can't be done, texts are sent over mobile data and not WiFi.
Google voice may be able to do it, but not sure.

Google Voice is an interesting angle to try. I wonder if it'd be over his head though. Thanks for that suggestion, I'll look into that one and see what it's capable of.

Doesn't tablet talk require that you be on the same wifi with both the phone and tablet, or be connected by bluetooth? Cloud SMS does not require either of these, my phone can be at home and my tablet can be at work connected to wifi, this is a fact, I use it every day. If I'm wrong about Tablet Talk requirements(haven't used it several months) then I apologize. I may have misunderstood the question, but the information I provided, in response to your comment that the phone and tablet have to be near each other, was correct. But your "tone" is both unnecessary and not appreciated. I was just trying to provide info on an app that I am familiar with. I'm not sure what your problem is.

I use Verizon messages on mine. It is Dependant on having a Verizon smartphone and being on the same wifi, but works like a charm for me. Let's you send and receive SMS amend MMS and pretty much anything your phone can do and doesn't require a separate plan for the tablet

Mighty Text let's you send texts through your phone using your pc. I am using the beta for nexus 7, so when I get a text on my Optimus G, I get a notification on my Nexus 7 and have the ability to respond to the text using the tablet, and no need to use the telephone. As far as the texter goes, they think you are texting from your phone. Even better, anything you do on the tablet shows up in your telephone's text app. Mighty Text also allows you to keep a history of the text. I hope this helps.

This is correct. I use Cloud SMS everyday. I hate connecting my phone to wifi, but it still uses the phones mobile data to send the sms through the internet to my wifi tablet. Also when im away from home, i tether them together and it also works perfectly like that as well. I hate taking my phone out of my pocket while im on my tablet, this way I never have to.

It's less expensive. I don't know for tablet talk but the Dev of cloud SMS is super fast to respond and to add features. You can find his thread on xda.
Also it s not possible without phone. Maybe with a 3g model and the sms app? Not even sure it will work...
Why not just set up a Google phone# and side load whatsApp? I have it on my n7 linked to my Google voice number. No problems. No needed to target to phone or data. True wifi sms ... And free.
The setup is the hard part...Very easy after that.

Mysms is a great tool! It can send sms over your phone and gets synched automatically. It even supports "internal" (free) messages from mysms-users and group chats (since yesterday). Very nice tool!

So, you have a Google Voice number, don't have it tied to anything, and are able to send txt via your tablet that way?

Yea Google voice lets you text via the tablet independent of or phone. You can even pay a one time fee of 20 dollars to import or existing phone number but if not just download the app on or tab and or good to go. And you can download the app on or phone if you want to text through that away from ur tablet

Does anyone else have issues writing text that are longer than one sms long? If so, is there a fix. This app has had the same issues on each update.
Another problem is when I go to compose a new text and I am typing the person's name in the contacts box it won't show the phone number I am trying to send a message to. It happens when I text my wife. I will type her name and it will show every other phone number she has but her cell phone. Can't seem to figure it out. I went into the contacts app and set her cell as the preferred number and that didn't fix it. I don't think that issue can easily be recreated.
So those are the two issues. Also, are those issues on the custom roms? I would imagine they are at no fault to the devs.

I am a noob but wanted to try and duplicate your issues on my phone.
I am flashed stock ZVB. I use GOSMS but tested the stock messaging app for your questions. I sent 2 text messages that were over the character limit. One sent correctly (1 of 2 and 2 of 2) the other only sent the second half of the second message (2/2).
I did not notice any issues with contact names.
Hope this helps.
Jeff
Got my one the day after release day from Verizon. I've been noticing a couple little bugs going on with the messaging app and want to see if anyone else is having the issues. Friend of mine has the phone to and he seems to be issue free.
The first issue is when hanging up a call, I often get a " unfortunately messages has stopped". No idea what's causing it but it's happening Pretty frequently.
The second one is hard to explain but I'll do my best. A few times while messaging multiple people individually, it some how puts the full message that I just sent right back into the text field. Almost like I never sent it but I did. Ends up saving the message as a draft so I have to erase it. I haven't figured out the exact steps to make this happen but if I do, I'll post it here.
Anyone else having these weird issues?

Not sure if this will help you, but I had imported my old messages into the new phone during setup using the HTC app (I forget what it's called). Messaging was messed up when I started using the new phone. I deleted all messages and cleared the messaging app cache. All perfect since then.

But I was wondering if anyone with more experience in android could help.
I installed an xposed module that unlocks the "default SMS" options in settings and in other texting apps like hangouts. Now I used the cyanogenmod voice+ app and linked my google voice, then I went to hangouts and got it to import my existing texts and that worked.
Now this is where it gets weird and I need some help lol its pretty glitchy. I actually receive texts fine, but I was able to send one text perfectly and now I can't send anymore.
If anyone wants to work on this please go ahead
