More roms and kernels ! - Galaxy S3 Neo General

Any other thing?

This is a free forum with devs that work for free. If you can't do it yourself then you can't go around and make demands like this. But yea you are right. We have very few devs. Android N is on it's way and we still hope for a good lollipop one. Not to mention 0 marshmallow roms, dissapointing when you think that old devices like s2 have working 6.0 roms. I honestly find it a bit irresponsible from devs since most of them start a project, and then interrupt it saying they don't have time. Better not start it at all than stop halfway. Anyway we still should respect their work.

Cm11 sev3n kernel is OC. You dont need more because is the better ROM available by far. No other is even close un battery duration.

Stock vs custom: huge dilema.

I cant decide on whether or not I want to load a custom rom on this phone!
I know this is XDA and everyone will say GO CUTSOM of course, but this is the first device I actually havent considered it. I feel like with every android phone Ive owned
And the hundreds of ROMs Ive used, Ive always experienced negatives that have come along with the positives that a custom ROM brings.
For example ill load up a ROM and it will come with the "best" kernel available, which turns out to cause 69% Android OS drain by the end of the day. Or from searching around here the custom ROM will cause shutter lag or other snall annoying things that I wouldnt be able to tolerate. I just dont know if the trade off is worth it this time as stock ICS works wonderfly for me.
I am however very interested in the 4.0.3 ROMs (even though I have no clue what 4.0.3 offers over 4.0.2) and the best kernel (lean) overclocks, undervolts, AND OC the gpu which i think are all awesome benefits.
Then I go search around about lean and find out that some people are experiencing lag.... Its like why go through all the trouble if im going to get 5 benefits as well as 4 negatives? AND cant get OTA.
Im just wondering if there is anyone out there (not you flashaholics) that feel it is better to stay stock this time around to live in peace so to say lol Your thoughts would be appreciated.

try stock, try custom.. then let us know whats best for you. choice, my friend, is a wonderful thing
it wont hurt anything to try a custom rom, you can always go back to stock
Have you guys tried the Gummy ROM or lean kernel? Any tips to avoid any of the problems I mentioned such as shutter lag or UI lag?
I had this issue with the GNEX. I have kept it stock so far. Unlocked bootloader, rooted and made a few UI changes and a differnt kernal.
I'm happy with it for now. Who knows what future will hold.
did the stock thing (with a few root mods like battery, menu button, brightness) for a couple months, then loaded up AOKP + leankernel and love the customization and battery life
will not go back to stock
If your device does what you want it to RIGHT NOW, then stay stock. If there are features that you want and only a custom rom can provide, then try a ROM, but be aware that custom kernels and ROMS can break some functions on your phone.
I was using CM7 on my previous android phone and lost the ability to receive voicemail notifications because of it.
Decide if you need "more", but accept any risks that come up because of it.
I suggest you try out AOKP ROM for the additional features and GUI settings. I also use franco. kernel for superior battery life and a noticeable speed increase.
It's a fantastic combo.

+1 for aokp + franco , they are awesome.
Excuse my noobyness but isnt AOKP just a stock untouched firmware? Or is that AOSP.
Just looked up the franco kernel and have read nothing but good things.
Nadroid - flash = see for yourself. I also recommend AOKP M3. And stock has bugs also. The only ROM that ever rebooted on me, was stock. So. Nothing is perfect that is why we like to change everything.
I'm using stock still, but rooted and using a modified status bar transparent. I plan to switch to custom but just taking my time. You can easily just nand backup your stock rom, flash custom for testing, then restore your stock backup if need be. There are lots of enhancements in the custom roms that is worthwhile.
I only got my Galaxy Nexus yesterday, however i think the stock rom is great to be honest.
There was always some problem with custom roms on the Desire.
If i was going to use a custom rom on my Galaxy Nexus i would wait for the stable release of CM9 or MIUI (if there ever is a stable one).
For now stock is fine for me personally, only thing i really miss is all the settings in the notification tray, but rooted stock is working perfect for me and its nice to have a perfectly working phone for once
well well.. flashing phones like samsung jet, omnia II, galaxy s, wave or htc touch diamond or sensation was my life..till i met the sony xperia s.. Now its too hard to decide what to do. Stay on stock or flash the new roms, kernels, mods..again and again. I am on stock now because of few lags..I hadnt expected. I am not gonna explain what was it but I wanna have fully function device on my own and that is why I made the decision to sty on stock. And of course I am still waiting for original upgrade. That is my opinion.

I know what you mean. I kept mine stock for months, which is longer than any other phone I've had. But I finally bit the bullet and went custom and I'm glad I did. You just gotta try for your self and see which you prefer.

A(ndroid)O(pen)S(ource)P(roject).
A(ndroid)O(pen)K(kang)P(project) is a custom rom by TeamKang, based on AOSP releases from Google.
Search tags: kang, aosp, source.android.com
@OP, i say just go with whatever you feel is working for you. If you feel stock is better, stick with it. I run my nexus bone stock (even with stock recovery, i use fastboot to boot cwm once, flash zip with a different font, just tired of roboto) from time to time, to get a grip of how things are going with official releases. I have no issues.
And there's no more Android OS bug. Use better battery stats (here in xda) to see whats causing wakelocks, which drains battery more than usual. If you have lte device you'll have considerably worse runtime on battery, if you on gsm then you'll get around 1d15h with 3h40 screen on with stock, when all is optimal. Lets face it, current battery technology blows.
Read a lot before flashing anything, till the point you are able to help others when they face issues without having really tested it yourself, to know possible advantages/disadvantages of x software/mod, if its user error, apps, or custom rom, or stock.
This is android as its supposed to be, some have even got bored of how easy it gets to play with this device.

Hey thanks for reviving a 3 month old thread to talk about your Sony phone in the nexus forum LOL
Also I would like to point out that I went AOKP then CM9 then LS all with the Franco kernel and wouldn't think about going back to stock. I would consider the phone unusable compared to what it is now lol

Yea LiquidSmooth is what I'm running on. Very fast and loads of features while being easy on the battery.
Everyone claims their 'insert rom' is easier on battery, but with the exception of those who have actively coded something like AOKP's battery saver, or BAMF Paradigm's tasker support in their LTE widget, its a bunch of BS.
Someone please show me, aside from the above, source code for a rom that saves battery. I'll settle for a github commit.
Most battery savings will come from lack of bugs that cause resource leaks and wake locks, or kernels.
All these claims are ranking right up there with statements like "deodexed for performance" or "ribbed for her pleasure".
I did flash a rom early on (Apex I believe it was) and I forget the reasoning behind me going back to stock but I am completely happy with staying on stock (& rooted) yakju. I will probably go to a rom sometime again in the future but for now I am good.
The good thing about flashing stock is that it is so easy to do it with fastboot so at any time you arent happy with roms you can just go back to stock.

Best kernel with stock rom

Hi , I wanna keep on with custom rom but I wanna change my kernel , what's the best battery and performance kernel , what do u think?

Was your post *REALLY* necessary?
So, to answer your question:
I don't believe most of the kernels are for the stock ROM, with the exception of faux123's. I have followed faux over from multiple devices, and his kernels have always gotten the best battery life! It also doesn't hurt that you can get over 30 hours with over 3 hours screen on time with his kernel!
[Kernel][GSM][Hybrid-3.0.21]ICS4.0.2/3/4/UV,OC,TUN,CIFS,FIOPS,OTG(v013) [Feb-18]
Also, if its battery life your after as opposed to performance, you should go with the mainline version of the kernel.

nope, just like the thread. his years of "knowladge" didnt help him.
I'm running on Franco 17.2 kernel (too lazy to update to 18.6) with the "stock" 4.0.4 rom and I'm seeing a pretty good battery life improvement over stock kernel.
I collected some metrics last night...
11h 6m on battery with 2h 48m display on time (auto brightness). Wifi was on almost the entire time.
I know people have gotten better with non-stock roms (4 hour display time over 16 hours), but with the stock rom, I'd say it's an improvement (used to only get 8-10 hours with negligible screen time).
I have been using franco 18.6 with the leaked stock 4.0.4 with good results so far, but have seen crashes on 4g/3g border areas. I can't really say if it's the best, because my sample size is a single custom kernel.
Used the app off the android market for OTA kernel updates; and am reluctant to try other kernels until more apps are available like that.
There really is not definitive answer on what the best kernel is for everyone.
Each person uses their phone differently and differing configurations will alter results as well.
Your best bet is to experiment yourself. Flash a kernel and let it run a couple days, trying to take note of how your on screen performance is, what you have run, also how the phone sleeps.
Then you move on and try the next, that is part of the fun!

Well, you obviously failed to realise the point, this kind of thread pops up everyday. So you failed search.
Its like a pair of shoes, you need to try and find what is best for you. Best kernel threads will always be retarded to ask because it is a preference, like an anus, everybody has one.

What Rom do you use?

What rom do you use? OR willing to use?
I wonder what roms are needed to keep runing. I hope this poll makes it clean what rom worth our time, what we should concentrate.
Thanks your vote.
LiteROM
but love CM
I used to have official PAC-MAN, more complet and usefull.
But some problems with the UI (fc) force me to change to unnofficial cm10.2 (bubors).

For me, stock lacks smoothness and RAM, CM10.2 lacks network traffic indicator (@bubor, why isn't it corrected after so long?), PACman lacks stability and a proper launcher.

Nobody had decent bug report. Hard to fix a feature what I've never used.
Fixed in 20131110, try it, and report back.
It might create a lot of poll options, but perhaps you should ask which ROM people use, and also which ROM they wish/want to use. A single option could be phrased thusly:
Use LiteROM 0.9 / Want PAC-Man 4.3
Which would be my option, will vote from a PC later to cast my vote in the current poll.
I'm suggesting this because I think the majority here would like to use a different ROM, if only 'X' worked, or 'Y' wasn't unstable. Alternatively, the poll could just be about which ROM people want to use. Saves all the possible use/want combinations.

Single vote serves me. We have 4 android 4.3 rom, and many 4.2. Too few people use glide to have that much roms. Users are fragmented. My cm-10.2 topic is full with useless posts. I have to waste time to confirm a bug, what should be done by others.
It's simple I wouldnt maintain a rom what's used less then 20 people.
Used several
So, im currently on my 4th day using [PORT][ROM][UNOFFICIAL][4.1.2]LiquidSmooth-JellyBean Glide by Ninthsense. So far I cant complain, i dont use BT or Voip services, so I really dont care so much about those issues, at first I used LiteROM the latest one from the greatergood didnt convince me, as it had several issues; after that I flashed CM 10.1 by Spyke555, it was really good and stable but some toggles came out automatically, for example data and, or GPS, meh... went back to stock ICS rooted, with litekernel, wasnt happy due to my battery life, and ram availability. Also my files on the SD card becamekind of unstable, some images were not shown, music couldnt be played... now Im using liquid smooth JB 4.1. Which so far feels really good. Is there another ROM you could reccomend me to use?

Good point, I understand and agree. My point is that when you ask which ROM people USE, you're not getting a list of ROMs most worthy of maintaining. You'll get a list of ROMs people use, without knowing why. My guess is that many of the Captivate Glide owners here use a ROM for it's stability, while hoping to be able to switch to another ROM that has more features and is newer, but not stable enough yet.
I use LiteROM because it's stable and has good battery-life. However, if you ask me which ROM I'd really want to use, it's a 4.3 PAC-man.
In short, I think it would be better to poll which ROM people want to see stable.

PAC-man is a feature rich rom, dont expect same speed/battery usage as a clean rom.
Ppl started to post why, but I dont really care.
I can see how much user download my roms, and they are too few to keep continue my work. At the moment I make more room (cm 10.1, cm 10.2 , pacman, omnirom), but I've got only one vote so far. More room then user(s)

Of course JB needs more power than ICS. As the number of features rises, energy consumption rises accordingly, dampened by how optimised each feature is. I don't expect the same battery life from a more feature-rich ROM.
But, I do dislike it when a newer ROM consumes twice the energy, whilst I do not make use of all the new features. However, it is unfair to compare a stable ROM to any other that still suffers (seemingly) random reboots. A reboot, it seems to me, is a short period of high CPU use. The more often a ROM reboots, the more the battery is drained.
Anyway, I just want a stable PAC-man 4.3. I voted for LiteROM, because it is has insane battery-life, more than I need(hence my desire for a more stable 4.3 PAC). I think the votes to this poll will reflect with which ROM people are most satisfied with. And I think their satisfaction is strongly related to how stable it is, which I think is inversely related to how much work there is left to do. Which is related to the work required in maintaining it.
Having said all this, I should mention how grateful I am to all developers. Development is no easy task, and not too often a rewarding one either. Dealing with users that just want stuff and expect it to be done yesterday seems very demotivating to me, so I really appreciate all the work done by the developers here. Including you, bubor!

Actually newer roms uses less cpu, and roms are faster.
Of corse I want to get official android 4.4 from google to i927 We have too few users, and they are seperate to diffrent roms, what makes much more harder to go forward.
Literom has litkernel, right? Litekernel has many power drain improve, but it costs many issue too ( broken wifi tethering, long wake etc)
Anyway you can use litekernel with newer roms with all its feature.
Did I just catch you contradicting yourself...? You can't say newer ROMs use more CPU (due to being more feature-rich), and then turn around and say newer ROMs use less CPU and are faster. Which is it? I'm thoroughly confused, now... It doesn't really matter, not the point.
Anyway, since you're the developer, I'd say it's your call. Most users here basically want the same: Something post-ICS, as stable as possible, and preferably as close as possible to the latest and greatest.
So, if you decide to focus on that and ditch the rest, I think you'll still have plenty of users willing to test whichever ROM you choose. Of course, people will whine about their ROM not being chosen, but that is unavoidable.
I'll stop now, it's getting way off-topic

You really misunderstand me, never said that. MAybe I wasnt clear enought. Dont expect same performance between Feature rich and clean rom, but same services are faster in 4.3.
You shouldnt post like this, its not forward at all. You just troll that topic, what is made to search Interesting. I see, you enjoy troll better then work for solution.
I dont wanna waste you time, I stop here too.
Bubor,I use your cm 10.2 latest and haven't had any problems with it at all!(well one no way to turn on hotword detection on Google now)not a biggie though
I know it would probably be a hard task but hope to see a kitkat rom on our captivate I think it would run great!
please vote if you didnt do yet.
i'm on the offical pacman but i will change soon to cm10.2 or back to literom if i don't have a choice.
but if you want to focus on one or two roms, i think you should focus of cm10.2 and omnirom 4.4, i will flash eiter one as long its stable enugh.

Need suggestions for a daily driver. (KitKat)

Any stable or close to stable AOSP roms for the ls970? I really just want a KitKat rom to use as a daily driver. I'm not looking to get flash happy and mess around with all types of roms and such, I just want something to stick with in the long run that will allow me to use my phone as bug free as possible. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

That doesn't exist yet, not really. I use stockimus as a daily with 8sms for sms/mms. Other than that its kinda a crap shoot some roms work really well for some people; others not so much. Daily driver for me means i could hand it to my dad and he wont call me about it breaking. Stable is if i can hand it to my mom. You're gonna have to get flash happy in order to find an aosp rom that works for you. sorry mang.

I disagree at all with him, there's plenty of KitKat ROMs been constantly worked by a lot of great developers, and a lot of them works great.
If you're one of those that can't stand flashing and testing a few here and there then stay in stock, if you're not, then, go ahead and try, you can always go back making a backup... but don't say that others works is crap.
There's gee ROMs like Vanir, Madhi, Hellkat, etc and there's ls970 ROMs (which are the ones that runs better in my phone) like Carbon, Liquid, PACman, etc.. full of features and very stable, but being honest CM11 is supposed to be the most stable, but it has lees features that others.
Every ROM has a forum where you can find what bugs it has and solutions, you can go and check if you want.
of course, there's a few things that you can't compare with stock ROMs like battery life and maybe stability, but it's not that bad, those features worth it. :good:
The thing is that every phone is different, I'm running Carbon as daily right know, you just have to find the right combination Rom-Kernel for you.

Not what he asked. Never said roms were crap. He said he did not want to get all flashy.
I would just suggest using something like slimkat or rastakat that don't have many features those are usually pretty stable.

Thanks for the info, i might get back into flashing around until i find something decent. And quick question, have you ever tried supernexus? I've heard nothing but good things about it and im looking for some more honest opinions about it before i decide to try it.

Looking for new ROM?

Hello there. I'm using FXP CM10 since May 2013. I want to try something new, but as I read all ROMs seem buggy and messy. Is there anything 100% complete and working(like the CM10), that is Android 4.3 or 4.4? Recommend me a ROM please. I mean totally bug-less, I can't afford to tolerate reboots or battery drains.
Thanks!

The least buggy build is 4.2.2 CM by RaymanFX. I suggest you don't try 4.4/4.3 as you'll be very disappointed.
That's it for almost a year? Very disappointing development for XS

Quite a judgmental statement. There aren't many developers left for the XS. It's a miracle that RaymanFX has spent countless hours on his own on this device. If you're not happy, you should get a new phone or learn to develop ROM's yourself.
Probably a new device. Thanks for quick info!
I've been using several betas of CM11, Carbon ROM and now Paranoid Android 4.2/4.3 and i have to say PA works pretty well, a lot more stable than the first two. Except for screenshots and fuzzy images in recents bar I haven't encountered any problems so far in the newest beta 2 of Paranoid Android 4.3. It's fast, stable and battery life is good. deedwar said hes working on the screenshot thing if rayman doesn't beat him to it. Oh, and the xperia S has official legacy support including OTA updates. I can't say that its working 100% because all 4.4 roms lack things like hdmi (I never even used that once) and some other stuff, but for everyday use its ok. there's no harm in trying it out.
