Was your post *REALLY* necessary?
So, to answer your question:
I don't believe most of the kernels are for the stock ROM, with the exception of faux123's. I have followed faux over from multiple devices, and his kernels have always gotten the best battery life! It also doesn't hurt that you can get over 30 hours with over 3 hours screen on time with his kernel!
[Kernel][GSM][Hybrid-3.0.21]ICS4.0.2/3/4/UV,OC,TUN,CIFS,FIOPS,OTG(v013) [Feb-18]
Also, if its battery life your after as opposed to performance, you should go with the mainline version of the kernel.

nope, just like the thread. his years of "knowladge" didnt help him.
I'm running on Franco 17.2 kernel (too lazy to update to 18.6) with the "stock" 4.0.4 rom and I'm seeing a pretty good battery life improvement over stock kernel.
I collected some metrics last night...
11h 6m on battery with 2h 48m display on time (auto brightness). Wifi was on almost the entire time.
I know people have gotten better with non-stock roms (4 hour display time over 16 hours), but with the stock rom, I'd say it's an improvement (used to only get 8-10 hours with negligible screen time).
I have been using franco 18.6 with the leaked stock 4.0.4 with good results so far, but have seen crashes on 4g/3g border areas. I can't really say if it's the best, because my sample size is a single custom kernel.
Used the app off the android market for OTA kernel updates; and am reluctant to try other kernels until more apps are available like that.
There really is not definitive answer on what the best kernel is for everyone.
Each person uses their phone differently and differing configurations will alter results as well.
Your best bet is to experiment yourself. Flash a kernel and let it run a couple days, trying to take note of how your on screen performance is, what you have run, also how the phone sleeps.
Then you move on and try the next, that is part of the fun!

Well, you obviously failed to realise the point, this kind of thread pops up everyday. So you failed search.
Its like a pair of shoes, you need to try and find what is best for you. Best kernel threads will always be retarded to ask because it is a preference, like an anus, everybody has one.

So, been seeing a lot of new AOSP kernels being released, which is great because i have been using CM7...
However, i am trying out some new ROMS (sense) and looking for Kernels other than HTC#15 and Net's.
Lets keep the thread uncluttered... I am not looking for opinions of this is best or not... but just some other options that i can try out. If i get enough options, i can just update the OP and we can all use it as a resource... ??
Here are my priorities:
1. Battery life
2. performance
Battery life is by far the most important thing for me.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
This thread should be closed ASAP. This is going to lead to multiple people suggesting multiple kernels and arguing over which is the best. One of the unwritten rules of kernels is "Do not ask which kernel is the best." You have try them out for yourself and give them a few days to settle in.

Ok.. will rewrite the OP, but i am just looking for options.. i will decide what i like, but the only options i am really finding are Net and HTC#15. There was not 1 mention of "which is best"
But thanks for answering my questions.....
It's nothing personal. It's just that theses threads never end well.
Try HTC #17 (Requires you to be on PRI 1.77 and radio 09.01)
or
Any of Net's, like you said.

I get it though.. i have spent my fair share of time reading through page after page of useless BS...
Best advice is to acquire the various kernels out there.
Try each one out for a few days to see what works best with your hardware.
Finally, don't forget to mess with governors and their settings. That will have a bigger impact on your battery/performance criteria.
I have only used one for 5 minutes, as I run AOSP, but the netarchy kernels are nice.

Right.. I get that and is what i typically do.. just looking for other Kernels TO try.....
HTC #17 (awesome, but best battery life when used on Myn's RLS4 or any pre-3.70 OTA based ROM)
HTC #15
The bajillion combinations of Netarchy-Toastmod kernels (seriously, there are a lot he's made. Static Undervolt, No Undervolt, HAVS, noHAVS, SBC, noSBC, etc).
Ziggy's (not a huge fan of these, but people seem to like them).
That's about it unless someone else wants to chime in.

Ziggy's kernels have a great balance between the 2 priorities, and battery life is great.
And just a suggestion, if you are not "looking for opinions of this is best or not". Then you might want to change the title of this thread, its a little contradicting.

As crazy as this might sound having the BEST battery life is hard to find. I'm using a regular battery not extended so I found that no matter what kernel combination I use there really is no AWESOME battery life. These types of phones on a regular battery just aren't meant to last all day. It ticks me off when people brag and they say things like "oh my evo last all day and etc" . Why brag and you're not even a heavy user like normal people. Most the people who brag about their ultra battery life aren't heavy users, and their phones are always sleeping. I use my phone all day, constant texting, twitter, Facebook, tapatalk, and wifi web browsing from about 8am-5pm. When I say heavy I mean heavy. Around 5pm my phones usually about 20 or 30% and this is perfect for me at least. I get home at 5 so that's my peak usage. I've used about every kernel/rom/tweak combination that exists and I don't think aosp has better batt life over sense and vice versa. Right now I'm using myns 2.2 with the 4.2.2 net/toast kernel sbc with the 1.77 prl and my phone can go from 8am to at least 7pm with very heavy usage. This by far the best I've gotten out of my 004 evo over and aosp/sense rom especially with everything working perfectly. Cheers.

How many times has this been asked?
Got to be one of the silliest questions to ask, as you will get a different answer all the time.
Everyone has their own opinion of what the best rom is.
I wont ask this stupid sort of question here!!! All I do is READ THE FORUMS and then try flashing different rom myself to see what I like.
even if you're right. it's not nice to curse people and call them stupid.
so keep on flashing but start with your mouth first.
For me, best battery rom with panorama shoot is defy+ german gingerbread walter edition..

Sorry, i already spent hours with reading and flashing but i couldn't find any rom with the simple specs i need.
Please continue read and spend more from your free time on the board and someday maybe you can be able to write something useful.
My opinion
dude, u have 5 or 6 options for this phone
either use a moded version of the gb roms (walter or iaio);this is the best thing u need for panorma as it comes natively with that, battery life same as all (2 days of normal use) but they are the slowest of all
cm7 (xda version or official one); no panorama no 720p just pure speed and awesomeness, battery life is 2 days of normal use (6 hours if u play streamed video)
miui (language specific mods, cmui, wjui); eyecandy but slow imo, battery life 2 days with normal use
stock froyo rom (or bb mods); using patches u can get panorama to work on that, this is best for battery life i got 3 days a few times with normal use
so yah..u decide, i use cm7 as it comes with all the codecs, volume track skipper, no lag in games, and u can customize it as u like as they are tons of themes on this forum or on the market

Sent from my MB525 using Tapatalk
galnet miui is the fastest of the miui's i've tried for the defy so far, but i cant speak about the battery backup because i removed it in a few hours,
loads of eye candy, maybe something the devs could/will use
it says its running 4.1 but it feels like 2.3.7.
sorry didnt check the camera!
as for walters ms2ginger 2.3.4
its clean, fast and has panorama. the battery life i get is about 12 hours with NO hard usage, i calibrated my battery thrice and removed the battery stat from the boot menu but it didnt seem to help. (any one who can help me, bless your soul)
what i like about it is the blur launcher which is somewhat easier but i thought that was eating up my batery so i used zeam, 13 hours backup, so hmmm maybe i went wrong somewhere!
Argen2Stone is nice, but its blue in the wrong places! :S cant talk about battery back up but since its based on ms2ginger 1 it has the same issues as that with a decent blue theme.
cm7 is fast. its pure speed. well if your looking to use a decent camera app then its not the place you should be, took me a while to get used to it.
doesnt shoot 720p. i didnt check for panorama.
the best battery back up i got till date is on my stock, company flashed froyo 2.2.2 sea 15 JRDNEM_U3_3.4.3-33-1 of 4 days with decent call and message usage. and the occasional round of angry birds or fruit ninja.
so, yeah as remuseu said, try try untill you find what you like!
ps:if any one can help me with the battery problem on ms2ginger 2 i would be VERY thankful!
has anyone tried the jboogie???whats it like??screen shots please??
I bought my GSII used, already rooted, with a custom ROM already loaded on it.
I have to ask - since I never used one with a 100% pure stock ROM - is it really THAT MUCH faster with a custom?
I am currently running Juggs 5.0 - but if I went back to 100% stock would I feel that much difference?

It's not really about speed. But with a custom ROM you definitely have more customizations possible. You can change the look of the interface, the notification toggles, colors etc. I have the i9100, which is another variant of the SGS2 and I've had ICS for a couple of months now, but it's not getting officially released until this month some time. So, it's not really about speed but rather about the freedom to do other things with it. Some people might cite benchmark tests, and scream that I'm wrong, but the hardware is what makes your phone fast...the software's not at all going to choke that out (whether stock or custom). As far as speed goes, you're probably not going to notice the difference.
Also, though you've got root access which enables you to install apps and do things you just can't do otherwise.
All that said, there are certain advantages to stock. It's often times more stable than something custom. There are ups and downs. If you feel the need to experiment, you can always flash back. Just read a lot before you get your feet wet (it is very possible to brick your device if you muck it up) and you'll be fine.
I don't think so. I'm going to get flamed plenty I'm sure but I don't see much improvement over how my phone performed out of the box. I think the battery life may even have been better before I started flashing stuff.
I should have stated in my original post - I am definitely not a n00b to Android or to flashing/rooting. I can understand the customization aspect, but honestly other than flashing, I have never had a real use for Root access.
I can flash something with a new custom interface or colors and always end up coming back to something that has the stock look about it... In this case, I've tried almost every available custom ROM and keep coming back to Juggs .
I ask about speed though because all the ROM cooks seem to try to use that as a selling point... "FAST!" "Butter smooth!" blah blah blah ...

After I posted, I looked at your tag, and assumed as much with 700+ posts, you've been around the XDA block.
Really? No need for root?! I'm a flashing junkie (well, okay, that's exaggerated. it comes and goes in spurts) TitaniumBackup is my friend. Also CWM is a gift.
Agreed, stock ICS is love. But I do also like certain tweaks, i.e. the %-battery indicator (and while we're on the subject, I've got a little Android logo with a % indicator for my battery...I wonder why Android devs don't include little things like that).
Yeah, your best bet is to try some out. But IMHO devs talk too much in that regard. I'll probably get flamed if any read this, but devs are kinda like used car salesmen in that regard. They've got a product that they want you to use, so they try to sell it. Can't say I blame 'em, really. But again IMO, most of it's hype.
I didn't think you were new to Android since your account is almost 4 years old so I'd assumed you were familiar with all the "benefits" of rooting. The phone is so nice out of the box I don't think any of the roms are any smoother or better on battery. I think Warfare is probably the best on battery and for me CM7 was easliy the worst. I didn't notice a change in data speed, 2d smoothness, 3d smoothness, battery cover smoothness... Nothing. The device is so nice out of the box and I don't use it for anything other than a phone, text messaging, web browsing, e-mail, Skype, the occasional slicing of fruit or a word or two with friends so I can't comment on all the added functionality all the "super-duper heavy users" of this device probably use on custom roms. The only reason mine is rooted is for an ad host file and the occasional tether.

When I had a Fascinate... I was a huge fan of overclocking and undervolting. The same when I had a Thunderbolt. It made everything smoother and the Thunderbolt especially needed help in the battery area. This device just works. No need for anything other than what it came with for me. Obviously that didn't stop me from flashing the development section... But hey, I have a problem.
Warfare is very good.but,no advantage so far.

the thing with our device is that it came sooo sick straight out of the box that you don't really need to improve it that much. However, custom ROMs/kernels generally make the ROMs smoother, but not many people notice the difference.
I actually notice that because of the kernels implemented with certain ROMs, our phone is able to RUN just as smooth at a lower clockspeed which saves us battery. Other than that, I don't think Custom ROMs are actually "SMOOTHER" or faster than the stock ROM because Samsung really did well on this phone.

The main difference is the bloatware which really does make an impact on speed, memory consumption and overall smoothness.
Some rom cook faster, you should choose the rom cook by team have many vote on forum.

I was just going to start a similar thread actually. I have watched videos of the different ROM's that we can install on the T989 variant to get an idea of what's available and what I like. Currently SlickMOD ROM looks the smoothest with the best battery life.
Having said that, in the video that I saw, when quadrant was run on SlickMOD, while it was overclocked, the score was approx 2690. When I ran Quadrant on my Stock ROM (rooted Stock ROM without being overclocked either) I got a score of 3199. Also, after 16 hours of use I still usually have more than 50% battery life.
Other than the options for different themes and customizations and ROM control, are custom ROMs going to provide better performance and battery life than what I am already receiving with my Stock? I mean I really want to give the other ROM's a try, but the reason would be for speed and battery life and right now both are pretty good for me on Stock. Thoughts/Suggestions?

Generally speaking (I don't own this device) stock ROMs will normally get better battery life. Custom ROMs can approach stock, in this regard, but I'd be way beyond surprised if a cook made a ROM that had better battery life than Google's team of Android developers.
Problem with SlickMOD is that the dev's T989 broke and he isn't getting another one - so - development has HALTED.

It's the Stock ROM that came with my phone. I rooted the phone but haven't flashed any custom kernel's or custom ROMs on my phone. I also use Zeam Launcher as opposed to the TW Launcher by default. I have turned off animations, limited my homescreens to 3. I don't use too many widgets and I use an all black background. Also running Juice Defender to help with battery but I don't think that affects performance/speed.
Model Number = SGH-T898D
Android Version = 2.3.5
Baseband Version = T989DTLKJ3
Kernel Version = 2.6.35.11
Build Number = GINGERBREAD.TLKJ3
I don't know if that helps or answers your question. Hope that helps.
I'm willing to bet that the performance gains that are being seen on the Stock ROMs is due to the fact that they are ODEXed. By DeODEXing the ROMs can be customized to the cook's heart's content, but there is a mild performance hit taken.
Thoughts?
I have been flashing roms on my phones since my very first android phone. Just going to get a dirt-cheap refurbished Xperia S, and I am planning to use this phone when I am in army for my conscription. (Yes, I know it's sad. )
So I heard that the standard Xperia S rom do not have the best battery life for a smartphone, so I would need my Xperia S to do the following:
1. I will be shutting off my phone during my training. Will only be using it at about night time (about an hour or 2 at the most.). But I may forget to turn it off. So I hope to have a good standby time.
2. Hopefully by switching on and off, I can last for about 2 weeks in a single charge (sounds like a hard task for a smartphone.)
3. I don't mind under-clocking and under-volting the phone to further stretch my battery life. But it still must be stable and generally smooth (gaming performance can be compromised.)
4. Obviously, with my cellular radio, WiFi, and all other stuff intact (don't mind if my camera is dropped to 720p though.)
So tl;dr, I need a good Xperia S rom/kernel that is able to last through my grueling schedule. Hope that I can obtain some useful advices. Thanks a lot.
As per XDA rule, do not ask questions about which ROM is best or Best ROM for Battery life. Otherwise MODs will close such threads without any further delay.
And As ApriliaM3 mentioned also -
Read rather than post, that's my tip... There's no such thing as a best or smoothest ROM. Check the responses here but also check the OP of the different ROMs, decide on 2 or 3 and try them for yourself. It's certainly not something that you need to create a new thread to accomplish.

I am not asking for the best. I just need some roms that are targeted to have a better battery life than stock rom. Because there are so many roms, that I have no idea which one have battery life as their main objective.
First i wanna say "Hello!" the whole HOX community.I bought a few days ago a ONE X and i must say cause i`m very happy to be the owner of this phone.I coming from an htc sensation,so i`m not a stranger The HOX was bought from Germany and i use it in Romania.Last days i did official update to 4.2.2 with Sense 5 after that i unlock bootloader and root cause i wanted to remove some system apps i don`t use.
So,now i want to ask you guys of you Sense 5 experience. How are the battery?Cause mine are not so good. And i don`t know, yesterday was better but today my battery drain much.I see in battery monitoring app cause kernel (Android OS) consumed most (cpu usage: 4h 11m).Otherwise,i must say Sense 5 are very smooth and i`m very impressed.I saw there Vipers and ARHD roms who are very good in my Sensations. And again, ask you guys, what rom(Sense 5 rom) did you use and have best battery life? Also, you use custom kernel? I know cause aren`t "best" rom, must try different combinations of roms/kernels but i want a starting point
Finally,i want to apologize for my bad english.Cheers!

Welcome to hox community!
Back to your post, there is no clear definition of "best rom" as it's very much subjective, and even two phones with same specs, cid, rom..will perform differently.
Well, in short, you like sense 5, and now just updated to latest official stock 4.2.2 with some concerns of battery. So, same as me, try Alex V kernel with better battery time, also some cool tweaks.
Btw, you might note that after update or flash new rom, battery normally gets better after a few cycle of full charge. So, dont judge too quickly.

Everyone's battery life is different because everyone has different uses. Apart from battery saver mode you can try "greenify" in the play store to make some apps sleep when you are not using them.
and you will not get an answer to "which is best rom" as it is not allowed, against the forum rules, it is best just to read about different rom's and try them yourself.

You're welcomed. I was once newcomer before.
Stock kernel is also good and i used it since ota update until i found alex v kernel with s2w/dt2w functions which are really amazing, and can help the power button last longer, plus other benefits. And I started using alex v since then.
Also, wanna share some info: with official ota 4.2.2 update, my phone is now at new hboot 1.73, base 4.19.707.3, and radio.. Most of the custom roms are built on previous base which I dont see good reason to switch to those custom roms, unless it's using same or newer base than mine. So, just to ensure proper checking before flashing custom roms.
Have good time with hox..

My phone cid is HTC_044 (Asia_WWW), using stock rom + alex v kernel. I tried some 4.2 and 4.3 custom roms but still prefer stock due to above rom base reason. But you can try custom rom freely as base is same.

Factory reset after rom flashing could make battery life better and smoother (as phone system is likely to run without any obstacles).
Play with stock kernel for some days and notice the battery life, then try Alex V Kernel and compare.
For me, I lower CPU speed to 1.2GHz and phone is awesome: running smoothly, just get warm up a little bit after nearly 1 hour of constant web surfing or play heavy games (Fifa 14, Real Racing...). Ofcourse, some small delay can be encountered but it's fair enough in exchange of cooler temperature and better battery. Man, try some small tweaks until it seems best for your usage!
