TouchPal keyboard - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

I've got 2 issues, prediction keeps switching itself off all the time, and I just cannot get curve (swype) to work despite trying every combination of TouchPal settings, any ideas?
Sent from my HTC 10 using XDA-Developers mobile app

I couldnt stand touchpal. I use google keyboard and deleted touchpal and all its lanugage packs, skins etc (requires root). Much better now.

Just found solution to Swype, you have to update the language as htc only included basic language.

Holding off on root, but its killing me as no proper app backup solution, need to read up as htc is sooo different to sammy/lg

You probably already know about this but to back up my app data I used helium from clockwork mod. It doesn't require root and all you need to do is enable USB debugging. That's what I used to back up my game data and other things when I switched from my one m9 to the 10.
For my call logs and text messages I used SMS backup and restore which worked flawlessly. The only thing left to do after that was to export my contacts to my SD card and I was set to go. It took me about 25 minutes to get everything up and going on the new phone not including system updates and application updates of course which you can't avoid
I hope that helps out some

Thanks, I am aware of helium but thought it may be a bit of a hassle. I'm used to titanium backup, LG has its own awesome backup utility.
Not too sure about flashing twrp/root yet as it stops OTA updates. So left with custom rom and wait for that rom to get OTA included. Looking forward to custom roms, custom kernel, heavy debloating, easy backup and restore. Still not sure how you flash HTC 10 back to stock!

In my experience helium is not a hassle to use at all. If you've never used it before you basically turn on USB debugging install the app from the play store and install the application from the website on your computer. After you do that plug your phone into your computer and launch the application on your phone. It then comes up with a list of all the applications on your phone, you can either press select all or individually select the applications you would like to back up. Once you do that you push a button and a few moments later everything is done.
One thing to note is that it creates a folder named carbon on the root of the internal storage of the phone, just remember to move that folder over to your SD card before you start experimenting with anything that may require wiping the phone. I have used titanium backup in the past as well and while the helium method may not be just as easy it is the absolute best solution out there for people that don't already have a rooted device

Just a heads up. Do not delete TouchPal like i did. My phone asked for the password for encrypted data at boot - it hadn't loaded the google keyboard, and as I deleted touchpal from system I had no keyboard! Only option was to restore. I've now left touchpal (minus all the language packs) in my rom, for some reason Google keyboard couldn't be moved to system. Oh well.

Hi I'm using Swiftkey but tried many keyboard. All are giving me a problem in the p button and keyboard being too sensitive. It types the same letter three times. Can anyone help

Yeah. Disable touchpal doesn't stop force install on language packs. I'm disappointed there's no option to remove this on play store.

FC Launcher Pro Backup Notes?

Phone randomly got FC's on launcher pro whenever I try to go to the Homepage, so it is barely usable at the moment. Like a dummy I haven't done any nandroid backup in the last few months, but i want to save my notes from the NOTES app. I keep a little log of ideas and notes that I will lose the last few months worth if I can't figure out how to salvage it. ANyone have any clue? If anyone can recommend a way to save the SMS's and Shazam stuff as well it would be a bonus
My problem is I can't get to any of my programs since the homepage won't load up, but I can get into my SMS's if I go to my contacts and sms from there. I did do a SMS backup to my computer with some program called MobileGo. It seems pretty thorough, but I haven't tested since I'm waiting to restore my phone until after I get my notes. Thanks!
I can view my SD card files easily but I can't seem to get it to browse my internal storage...unless i'm forgetting something I assume that is where my notes would be?? Need help...

Good idea...any idea how I can install it if I can't get to programs or homepage or the market etc? I can use voice commands, make calls, text or look at my contacts and use some apps that come up by themselves like facebook, craigslist etc.

do you have titanium back up?
if you do go into that fin luancher pro and clear the data
Can you walk me through the steps...I can't get to any homepage or open up programs so not sure how I would get into titanium backup or launcher pro. If we could just figure out where notes stores its data I could back that up then do a fresh install and drag and replace the new one with the old, I assume.
First do a nandroid back up from cwm assuming your rooted. That way nothing that is done to it can't be reversed. Second what actually happens when you reboot the phone?

I am rooted and can do a nandroid backup from cwm...When I boot up the phone it loads everything then force closes constantly when launcher pro tries to load...I can cheat past to make calls if i press the home button quickly and tap the phone icon. I'll do the backup now.
Backup successful...Am i wrong to assume if I do a clean install and reinstall my ACS rom all succesful then restore my nandroid backup that my notes will be restored? If not then I'll do that and thanks. Otherwise, I'm still trying to save my notes. Bumpsky
You can try. Asking as you have back your now in a position that you can experiment. When you boot the phone does it immediately crash. Can you get to the app drawer. Then to market. Then titanium backup. Backup notes app and data. Reflash then restore notrs

Just spitballing here but can't you download another home launcher like zeam from a computer... it'll push it to your phone and when its done downloading press home key and set that one as your main launcher.... then delete the faulty one and reinstall it?
You could try reflashing your rom clean and doing an advanced data restore in cwm. Not sure if that would work but it's worth a shot.
Edit: also i believe there is a way to restore apps from a nandroid in titanium if you flash clean. I've never done it, but I've read about people doing that.

[Q] Major lag from touch screen suddenly

Hello.
I have posted this in the forums at Android Central and only got one response. I've had my phone since Feb of this year. Since 11/2 there is major lag. No issues on 11/1. Taps on the home screen are continuously being read as long presses. My lock screen is really laggy, as are home screens and most apps. Bad piggies for whatever reason is working just fine. Most other apps including the keyboard are very laggy. It just seems to be very slow to respond to touch all of a sudden. My phone is rooted stock GB. At AC, I was told an app was hogging RAM. I downloaded Memory Useage from the google play store but it doesn't seem to make a difference. I'm still getting that lady after killing and uninstalling apps. The lag is still there with the native launcher so I really don't think it has anything to do with GO Launcher. I used TiB to revert GOL back to the previous version. I also uninstalled GOLocker as well. I've done a soft reset but it didn't help.
Is there a way to see my Play update history so I can see which apps installed that night? I've always had the occasional lag but it wasn't ever really a big deal. This is greatly interfering with my use of the phone. I am lucky to type a word before the keyboard disappears. Low resources makes sense but I just can't figure out what app is hogging them.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I'm thinking of resting back to unrooted GB to upgrade to stock ICS.
The first app in the my apps list is the most recent one. So start uninstalling from the top.. Now if you had installed an app say 2 months ago, uninstalled it a month ago and then reinstalled it today then it won't show at the top of the list. It will be still at that same spot where it was 2 months ago. So keep in mind if you reinstalled some app.
Also you should uninstall apps from applications in settings so you can clear cache and data for that app. Or you restart after each uninstall.

This is so frustrating. In the Play Store App, my "Installed" list is alphabetical and the "All" list is listed by install order with the most recent at the top regardless of timestamp of update. I cannot see any option for changing the order. Should I just go by the TiB list? It is showing the apps in order of update and lets me clear cache and uninstall the apps.

Now I have removed all apps updated on 11/2 or overnight from the evening of 11/1. The only one I can't touch is Kies. I have frozen it with TiB but I'm still getting the super heavy lag. What can I do next? Do I need to just reset the whole device now and start from scratch?
This is really frustrating. I love my phone and haven't had it long enough to switch to something else. Are there any tests that I can perform to check on the screen itself?
I have also installed OS Monitor and the top apps using up the CPU are OS Monitor, SYstem, Google Play Movies & TV, Android System, gzip. THe % used varies from 0% up to 26% they may last only a second or two. Is there something wrong with my phone? I feel like I've exhausted finding a resource hog.
If you have a custom recovery installed then do a nandroid backup and flash a fresh install of something to test it. If its not broke in the test then you can restore tour backup and continue to troubleshoot. Honestly though its easy enough to just start fresh. I do it every few days/weeks on a new rom.
Heck at this point flash something ICS or even JB. I can't think of a reason to ever use a GB rom again.

Paranoid android 2.50. You can make a nandroid backup from el26 kernel with cwm of an pics rom.

I'm currently using codename, great rom. I've only used my nandroid backups several times but they do work. Always just made my backup in whatever custom recovery I was using at the time. Can't remember what recovery I used on GB. Its been a while. Edit just use the el26 blues mentioned above
When switching between ROMs or experimenting I use SMS backup and restore and call log backup and restore from market. Its nice to have those old texts and call logs sometimes.
I use SMS Backup cuz I want to save my texts but I don't know if I need to save my call log.
Thanks for the recommendation. Paranoid Android looks pretty cool.
My external SD card is safe right? Does it need to be backed up as well?

Custom roms typically require manual updates. Very few update automatically and i have never tried paranoid.

[Q] Keyboard Keeps Resetting To Samsung 3

I think if you go to the buglist at swiftkey.net you'll find you aren't alone. I'm using the Swiftkey Flow beta and this problem hasn't occurred...yet. You can turn of the Flow feature and it becomes a regular Swiftkey keyboard.
I use Smart Keyboard Pro off of the market and the same thing keeps happening to me. By that I mean I don't use swype and my settings keeps rolling back to the regular keyboard.

Could you describe how this is happening? Does it switch keyboards after you use a certain app, or does it just switch at random times? One thing you could try is to disable all other keyboards under applications. This way, the phone has to keep using your keyboard.
Happens for me after a reboot. Always goes back to Samsung keyboard. Once I change to SwiftKey, it stays that way until the next reboot. As others have said, seems like a bug between JB and SwiftKey 3 (without Flow beta)
It happens every time I restart and then it would happen randomly while using the phone. I thing Task Manager by Rythm Soft was killing Smart Keyboard but I got it on the ignore list now; and so far it seems limited to the restart. It's not possible to disable Swype or the Samsung Keyboard. They are greyed out on the list.
To the O.P. you should check any task managers to be sure Swype isn't being killed.

This is a known bug with JB 4.1.x.....
Swiftkey has it mentioned in a bug list as well as Google in a bug list...
It has something to do with apps getting installed differently and storing app data differently with JB. When a phone reboots the storage location for that app's data is not mounted or available right away so the app can't load and therefore the phone switches to the default keyboard.
Happens with a few other apps like AT&T Vooicemail Viewer.
The work-around is to root the phone, backup the app with Titanium Backup, uninstall the app, then restore it without data. Then set the keyboard as default and it should stay that way after re-boots.
Good luck!

Might wait for Google or Swiftkey to fix the bug. If I restore without the data, then I lose all the words Swiftkey has learned.
This is really odd. A few weeks ago I downloaded the SwiftKey Flow Beta and this problem disappeared. That is, after a reboot my default keyboard would stay on SwiftKey Flow Beta. But yesterday SwiftKey released the official version 4 with Flow integrated. And now the problem is back - reboot makes Samsung Keyboard as default.
So what did the Beta do that was so special that it would stay after a reboot??

It's a change in the way Jellybean handles how Google Play apps are loaded during boot process, since they happen after the keyboard gets loaded, it reverts to default.

correct. since the play store installs apps in a location (on your JB device) that is not immediately scanned during the first part of boot up, thats why the stock keyboard is loaded. however, to fix this on my wife's unrooted/stock S3, i found the actual swiftkey apk then downloaded and installed it onto the phone. this placed the apps info in the correct storage location that is seen on boot up. i do not condone downloading apps you have not paid for however i did this for her as she and i have both paid for swiftkey on all our phones/tablets when it initially released on the play store. i dont have this swiftkey issue on my s3 as it is running a custom rom. cheers

Sorry if this was already covered...but I read a post at the Swiftkey site that the issue is with Paid apps on JB. Not all paid apps of course...but some paid apps like Swiftkey install to this special storage location that is not available soon enough during the boot process.
The 4.x Swiftkey beta was not a paid app so it worked...now that the beta is released it is a paid app and the Swiftkey 4.x release in Google Play has the issue again on JB just like 3.x did.

Yeah, I am accessing the settings that way. Any ideas? I've tried wiping data in Titanium Backup to no avail.

Unfortunately neither of those things work. going to settings then accounts and sync and Google just opens up the normal Google now settings.
Also uninstalling Google now has royally screwed up my phone so I would not recommend anyone else do this.

thats why I installed a custom rom as soon as I got the phone out of the box
backup with htc cloud, shouldn't take long to recover everything back to normal
I really don't want to install a custom rom. They are too unstable for me and the stock rom has great battery life and is well designed. Xposed modules can allow me to make any changes necessary without the bugs you get with custom roms.
Bumping this again. I have uninstalled, wiped data of the app, and done everything I can think of. Also updated to the latest one and no success. I have no apps modifying google now or any touch interfaces of any kind. Any idea for a fix?
So what are you actually wanting to change? What Google Now cards are shown? If so, you open Google Now and then click the magic wand you can then add/remove which cards are shown

Imho he means the settings screen where you can access e.g. the Offline Voice Packs...
A couple of us have been trying to figure this out forever. Custom ROM won't help. Something else is breaking it. In my case, I think it was when I installed a clear themed gnow from tbo. The only way I ever got it back was when I accidentally wiped my internal storage. I broke it again with clear gnow. Restoring a nand doesn't help. Clean flash doesn't help. This leads me to believe something is being left in internal SD that's messing with it. Another of us has not installed anything themed and still it's happening to him. Very elusive.
Here's a workaround that was just found. I'm pasting it from the tho thread I just posted it in. Op, maybe add to your op for people who stumble upon this thread with the same problem.
Pasted: Just want to keep you abreast of my discoveries. My problem, and a friends, of settings not working clearly start when I install clear gnow however I have found a couple people who have this problem and did not theme anything. Someone found a work around. This may or may not shed some more light. If you install gnow launcher you can access the settings from there. If you switch back to sense it stays until reboot but then if you need to adjust you can switch back to g launcher to do it. I'm just keeping gnow launcher installed for that purpose.

News Republic

Recently News Republic has started to display notifications. I don't use the app and don't use blinkfeed. Is there any way to stop it displaying them? I can't uninstall the app, I'm also unrooted

You can go into App Settings and Disable the app. That's what I have done.

Configure the app per your preferences. I don't get notifications from it but I don't have it disabled; I did spend time setting all it's options to be quiet. (I only want notifications I specifically set, like reminders, or from other living, breathing people I know and nothing else.)
I prefer to use the minimum amount of force necessary...keeps other issues popping up at a minimum (like removing TouchPal can prevent you from decrypting your device on boot, as one example).

Not to digress but removing TouchPal itself isn't what causes boot issues, it's not having a system installed keyboard. I uninstalled TouchPal day #1 and run HTC IME installed to system and there are not issues.
News Republic is bloatware, root and use titanium backup to remove it.

Hello, how did you do that? I am un-rooted and the only reason I do not uninstall (actually, disable) TouchPal is decryption upon boot. I use Google Keyboard.

You need root. If you search the forum you'll find all instructions you need to root.
Thete is a flashable zip with missing HTC apps and it includes HTC IME keyboard.

Yeah thought about it too. I was looking for a root-less way. I hope the N update brings another default keyboard so that I can at least disable TouchPal, but I highly doubt it. Thanks for the answer anyway.

We're way off topic but Nougat itself has nothing to do with what Keyboard is installed, that's an HTC choice. Whatever the HTC Bolt has is what we'll get for a keyboard and that's TouchPal if I'm not mistaken.
There is no harm in rooting unless you need Android Pay. Otherwise it's very easy and harmless.

I know that and that wasn't my point. My point was that changing things (i.e. removing TouchPal only--which is what I said) can cause problems. To troubleshoot, one must consider this and going back to baseline may be the most efficient route to diagnosis. Basically, asking, "Did I cause this?".
I also said, "can" cause problems, not "will"; I removed TouchPal and didn't install any other keyboard and my device booted just fine (in spite of the Viper installer warning). I got the SmartDial keypad to enter my bootup PIN, which I actually liked better.
Additionally, still removing TouchPal may cause other problems, depending on how much htc expects it to be there (dependencies). Given the potential downside with no potential upside to removing it, I don't; I just don't use it (aside from bootup). SwiftKey works just fine with TouchPal still installed.
So, to clarify, you are correct, not having a system keyboard can cause problems. TouchPal is the only system keyboard; ergo, removing TouchPal removes the only system installed keyboard.

Removing TouchPal causes no known issues other than the needing a pin at boot and not having a system keyboard, unless as we've both agreed an alternate keyboard is installed. I understand you're speaking from speculation about potential issues but I'm speaking from actual experience as I flashed the HTC default keyboard as a system keyboard on both MM and N and have had zero issues directly or indirectly related.
Happy Holidays, hope your 2017 is fantastic.

If by "speculation", you mean the users who posted the "potential issues" becoming a reality on their phones on this forum, then yes.
Installing an alternate keyboard isn't enough; it has to be a system keyboard.
My experience is that my phone presented the dial pad to enter my PIN after removing TouchPal but had SwiftKey installed (but not as system app). Had I set a password instead, I would have had to reformat/reflash from scratch.
Additionally, custom ROM installers provide a warning about this.
