I have a HTC One m9 which is rooted and has twrp. It is on 5.0.1 and I would like to get the OTA updates to goto marshmallow. But I am s-on with t-mobile and want to be 100% sure what I am doing and risks involved. I looked at multiple forms and they usually require s-off. I also have read that you can flash stock recovery and run the ruu file and then it will reset your phone but wipe the data which I am fine with yet it is risky and can brick your phone. I would just like to return to stock without bricking my device. Any help would be very helpful. Thank you
Running an RUU should not brick your device.
You will have to relock your bootloader before running the RUU.
Read flippy's thread in the general section. S-off is the easiest way.

So if I lock boot loader, flash stock recovery and then run the ruu file, I should be good. Right?

You shouldn't have to flash the stock recovery to RUU...at least I never had to, but may be different on the M9, but I doubt it.
Correct. The RUU will flash the stock recovery. But there is no need to relock if you use the SD card method for flashing instead of fastboot.

Don't you need to be s-off to use SDcard method? It's always been that way to my knowledge.
I used that method with the M9 before S-OFF was available for this device so I can say for sure that S-OFF is not a prerequisite.

How do you use the SD card method? Do you put the .img file into your flash which goes into the phone and then use cmd?

For the ruu file, I can goto htc.com and download the latest T-Mobile ruu file? Also, if I do the SD card method, are there no risks or is there a couple. And if there is a risk and it happens, what do I do? I want to do this being 100% prepared for every possibility.
It depends: HTC's website only provides RUUs for US carriers. Since you never mentioned which T-Mobile you're talking about I can't tell you whether you will find the correct RUU there. T-Mobile Germany RUUs can be found in my sheet, too. If you need any other than the US or the German one then I don't know where you need to look for...
There are less risks than using fastboot since the file is already on your phone (more or less). Using fastboot or a RUU.exe (which does nothing else then using fastboot) the USB connection could theoretically be interrupted which may hard brick your phone in the worst case. Nevertheless I can't remember reading about such a case so there should be no reason for worries.
Be aware that you need a RUU.zip file for the SD card method. If you can only find an *.exe file than you need to extract the archive from the *.exe. There are plenty of guides how to do this here on xda which can all be found with the help of google.

You can get the zip file from an RUU.exe, just open the program and let it finish the progress bar
Then go to %localappdata%/temp, find the latest created folder (has some random strings), and then it should be called ROM.zip (hint, it's on the same folder as ARUWizard.exe)

I have the zip file using icycowolfiv method. Tomorrow I will attempt to flash. But if anything goes wrong, what do you recommend I do? For example, this zip file is not the correct ruu or I need s-off to flash using a sd-card. After your reply, I will flash and tell you how it goes.
I just realized I need a micro SD card. I have a regular one. Crap. I don't have a micro SD card or the means to upload a file to it through a computer so now what? I could borrow a micro SD card but I don't know how to upload a file to it since my computer only has a standard SD card reader.
You don't need S-OFF. And I highly doubt that it's the wrong RUU if you are a T-Mobile US User.
Micro SD cards aren't that expensive. Be aware that it mustn't be bigger than 32 GB and formatted to fat32 if firmware 2.x or 1.x is installed on your phone. Besides you could buy a Micro SD to USB adapter or a Micro SD to SD adapter.
Edit: Or you simply use the *.exe or flash the *.zip manually via fastboot (htc_fastboot needed - the normal one will crash) or you google for llabtoofer's RUU service.

Have you ever download ROMs from htc site? I suppose not, so in that case don't say that this ROM is fake or something like that. This exe contains zip file which you can find in temp folder. This exe is supposed to be run from PC, that's why it look like that.

What is this? It looks super sketchy.
Why the suspicion folks, it just looks like an RUU to me ? i.e. an exe (since that what an RUU is) that you run, not a ROM image that you flash from SD card.
Looks like it has the newest radio to date, might be worth extracting that and flashing to see if it helps us all even if we don't use the ROM itself ?
Not to mention, the OP is respected and known to be a provider of new RUUs as they come out. Theres nothing suspicious in the presentation of an exe. And I doubt that Football would knowingly endanger anyones phone

Yeah, if you run the RUU but just leave it at its first window (don't press anything), then you can go to your temp folders under Windows and you'll find it's extracted the ROM PC10IMG.zip file from the .exe and stored it in that temp area. Within that will be various stuff including the radio image.
I actually don't know for sure how to flash the radio, no-one seems to have posted up a method yet on these forums (probably use fasboot to flash it ?), this may well be because we haven't really had any new radios to try. But to me, this one looks like a signifcant enough change number-wise to give it a go.
Won't it unroot and s-on if you flash it?

I will try this out. Sprint Hero used RUU's and was succesful. Problem I see is that in my experience after using and RUU to flash it usually destroys your root or your ability to root with conventional methods. Im I wrong? And Do you know what the Egypt might possibly stand for?
This one is not ment for random noobs to flash, but for devs to grab new/updated stuff from e.g. the radio as mentioned.
DONT FLASH THIS IF YOUR NOT FAMILIAR WITH RUU AND WHAT IT CAN CAUSE, ITS NOT A COOKED ROM ITS OFFICIAL!!

It won't be rooted since it's a stock ROM. Not sure about S-OFF since that's set in the radio config partition assuming you used gfree.
It is not safe to flash if you only have S-OFF via the eng hboot.
This RUU is legit. RUUs come in .exe form. If you happened to check the HD2 forums they use RUUs as a way to root the phone and flash a custom wm6.5 rom
Is it just me or is half the HTC Vision/DZ community complete noobs to the android system? RUU's have always been .exe's - they are official ROM's released by htc. They do not require root (in most cases) to install. There is nothing weird about it. Man, I don't remember people this infantile in the Hero forums.
Not to perpetuate, but there seems to be an awful lot of hostility after Football posted a RUU. Especially in regards to the tweaking of someones quote.
Come on fellow XDAers let's hold back those irritations we bring in from a hard days work and look at this logically.
Thanks for the RUU upload, Football, let's see what the devs do with it.
Why doesn't someone post the extracted files and stop all this malware nonsense?

I have S-OFF. I have tried following the directions on: http://www.virtuousrom.com/2011/06/t-mobile-g2-users-migrating-to-desirez.html
In Bootloader it won't recognize the PC10IMG.zip file. I had checked the MD5 sum and it checks out perfectly, however it when it will not initialize the install of the file when it runs through its file scan.
Is there another way to install the DZ HBOOT or a way to force my G2 into recognizing the .zip file?
Thanks in advance.

I believe you could flash the .img using fastboot, not sure of the exact command though

1 - I am assuming it is on / on the sd card
2 - I am assuming that the filename case is exactly that (ie not all caps or all lowercase).

Yes there is a way using adb. Not sure where it's @ but i think you would just use the xda vision wiki, and substitute the desire hboot in place of eng h-boot in the article. Thats the way we flash the eng h-boot when we initially s-off our devices so i would think that it would work the same for this?
My HBoot is 0.76.2000 (PC1010000).
I'll look into the Wiki and see what I can find. If you guys have any ideas let me know!
Okay, problem solved! I was using a 2GB memory card. I followed GinoAMelone's advice in a different thread and switched to my 4GB card and it Bootloader magically recognizes the PC10IMG.zip. Thanks for all your help guys!
I have the same problem but the culprit is different, it's my own mistakes prior the creation of gold card, btw I use 2Gb Micro SD

Not entirely true. A goldcard only by-passing checking the carrier ID (CID) during flashing of a HTC signed PG32IMG.zip, so you could flash a Bell Mobile ROM onto a Virgin Mobile device. The zip file must still be a signed and unaltered HTC ROM.zip image. You must have S-OFF to flash a custom PG32IMG.zip file.

On older models (MT3G), you could use the gold card to downgrade to an older software version. That was how I rooted my friends MyTouch.
Basically my Desires micro usb connector is broken and I am sending it for repair on monday.
They only asked for the phone - no battery, back or sd card - so should I return the phone to stock since I'm rooted and s-off.
What would be the best way to do this keeping in mind I can't use usb.
My desire was originally orange branded and is from the uk.
1. Download the Alpharev downgrader.zip and rename it to PB99IMG.zip
2. Orange did not release any RUU's (The things that factory reset your phone), so you will need a goldcard and a WWE (World wide english) RUU.
3. Once you've made your goldcard, extract the rom.zip. To extract the rom.zip:
[PHASE1]- we need to extract rom.zip from the RUU.
[P1/STEP1]- Run the RUU (BUT DO NOT PLUG IN YOUR PHONE OR CONTINUE), move it to the side as it cannot be minimised.
[P1/STEP2]- go to start menu, and use the "run" feature. Type in %temp%
[P1/STEP3]- select "date modified" to "today" (to make it easier to find). There are should now be 2 folders with long names of random characters.
[P1/STEP4]- search the folders for rom.zip and extract it to the desktop.
Click to collapse
4. Put the Alpharev downgrader PB99IMG.zip on your the root of your sd-card (not in any folders)
5. boot into HBOOT (NOT fastboot)
6. When you are prompted to update, select yes and wait for the process. Once completed. Poweroff.
7. Rename to rom.zip you extracted to PB99IMG.zip
8. Delete the PB99IMG.zip FROM YOUR SD-CARD, and replace it with the new one
9. Boot into HBOOT and select yes to update. The process takes a while. DO NOT INTERRUPT IT OR YOU WILL MOST LIKELY BRICK YOUR PHONE!!!!!!!

you can get the CID with this (just stick your sd-card in a usb adapter ), because you want the CID of the sd-card not the phone, then just follow this tutorial, and skip the part where they get the CID.
Just a thing to point of with that tool, when you copy down the CID, do it without any spaces or commas... just the numbers/ letters

I need a PG76IMG.zip that will permit me to reflash my radio and HBOOT. It MUST be CDMA and I would prefer a Virgin Mobile.
I have heard that the HTCDEV RUU has been updated to being only one rom.zip containing both the radio and HBOOT and if someone could provide me with that, I would be eternally happy.
I would run the utility myself and get the rom.zip, but my phone is presently bricked, hence why I need the PG76IMG.zip.
If you have one available, PLEASE let me know!

I have one for tmobile us but looks like you need the vm version. It's easy to get the Rom zip file. Just run the ruu and STOP at the view readme or basically do nothing then go into run/search and type in "%TEMP%" and will bring up a lot of folder with nunmbers. Look for the folder that has another folder+2 files and that second folder will have the ruu files and you will find the Rom zip. (for me the 1.09.0099 ruu had two zips) rename it to PG76IMG.zip and flash it, there you go.
It didn't work... Oh well. I am sending it to RadioShack (that's who my warranty is with) tomorrow or Monday (whenever the box arrives) so it'll be fixed eventually.
