Bootloop issue! - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am an ex-iphone user and i switched to android because it allows for rooting, tinkering, and customizing. and while i love this and it works smoothly, the only issue is with the booting. ive had to factory reset multiple times. now i think xposed causes bootlooping--but usually if i go back to recovery mode when it happens, and start my phone again, it boots normally this time. a little irritating, but very worth having the modules. which only are youtube playback and system font changing. now everytime i get Go launcher Z , my phone bootloops and never boots again.. each time i do a factory reset but at first i assumed it was due to one of my xposed modules. so i switched th a different type of font changer. but still the same problem. i dont understand how a launcher causes boot problems.. what do i do? i love this launcher SOOO much. it makes my phone amazing and personalized.. what do i do now? i really would be upset to do ANOTHER factory reset. any other options?.. and im no expert so any help that has lots of different technical terms and steps, i wont understand. so please in simple terms please and thank you!! i really am clueless how to fix this.

I'm not an expert by any means, but I "believe" Z launcher has the ability to change homescreen font, this might not play well with the module.
Try using iFont or HiFont (playstore) to change system font rather than a module. Xposed is a finicky beast, i used to use it back in the lollipop days but I've grown tired of it.

[Q] Choppy user interface

I have a weird problem with my N2. Overall it works great, battery is incredible, 3D games run smoothly, but the user interface is very choppy at times. Switching between home screens is great, no matter how fast I do it it's always buttery smooth, but opening an icons folder is choppy - I can definitely see the difference when tapping a folder with one row of icons and one with more rows. Also, if I'm downloading something, than it gets really choppy. Opening and closing apps is often choppy, yet in between that the apps work great.
If I'm watching a video and then tap the button to make the video smaller, first it disappears completely and then it flies out from the bottom right to the top. I did 2-3 factory resets, and everything is fluid as it should be after that, but the moment I start installing my apps, it becomes choppy. I don't use suspicious apps, and most are from recognized developers. The phone's rooted using the All in one toolkit, and Triangle Away was applied. Stock ROM is still on it. Memory usage is around 800Mb-1.2Gb. Battery saving is off. Sometimes I get FC's on TouchWiz.
It's just kinda weird, at times I feel like I'm running a low end device. It's responsive, but not fluid. I had Avast mobile on it and uninstalling that made it a lot better, but it's still not as fluid as the first day. Any ideas? TouchWiz problem or a bad app?
Give nova launcher a try. It's the best launcher I have ever used.

I tried Go launcher and it was laggy as hell. I have no idea what's causing this, but it's not good.

Hello, I'm sorry you're having issues. But might I ask that you flash one more time a completely stock ROM with NONE of your apps. Without rooting, install your apps and see if it's an OEM app from the Play Store. If that's not the case, then it's something you're doing on the side (an app you've installed while rooted or something that is acting up that has powerful user privileges).
See if that helps.

Hmm, can you be a bit specific about that? I understand what you're saying, except the "without rooting" part. The phone is already rooted, and with stock ROM - I rooted it, applied Triangle away and Root Exploit fix and reflashed stock recovery. No custom ROM has been flashed.
Now you say to flash stock ROM without rooting. That would mean I would have to unroot it now. Or what?
Something strange is definitely afoot - very demanding 3D games run buttery smooth, yet lightweight apps are laggy as hell - for instance, scrolling through list of POIs in Navfree app is painfully slow.

Yeah, if you reset your device to factory you'll lose ROOT. Try to use it without rooting your device. Completely stock. Put some samsung apps in a folder and see if it's still choppy... You'll have two possibilites.
If it is still choppy, then you have a problem with the ROM. Maybe you should try another one.
If it is smooth, then proceed to installing your apps (still without rooting your device) and then check to see if it's still smooth. If it isn't smooth after installing your apps then you have an app that's conflicting with your OS. If it is smooth then proceed to rooting. If you root and there is a problem, then something with the rooting process went wrong and it changed something or an app that you have is doing something strange with your OS. You could also try it the other way around. Flash again, root first thing, try the folders and see if that works. See what's causing the problem.
I know it's a long boring process, but ... it must be done! Another option is try a new ROM in general. Hope I've made myself clear this time take care & good luck!
Merry Xmas!
I unrooted it and am now completely stock (with the device status still being modified). Just stock apps are on the phone and it seems to be working ok. WIll see wha happens after installing some apps.
EDIT: I am now downloading updates for stock apps, and am definitely seeing some jerkiness when opening and closing apps, mainly Google apps.
Perhaps it really is the firmware that's causing the issue. My device came with N7100XXALIE N7100BUALI7 VFGALIA stock firmware, which is still on it, yet the only available stock firmware for my country and carrier is N7100XXALIJ N7100VFGALIC, and everyone seems to be using that one.

[Q] Questions on newest PAC3 build

First off, kudos to Chilly for allowing me to use JB on my Dinc2. Thought I was going to be stuck on CM7 until an upgrade. Now, maybe I can use the upgrade so the teenage daughters will have fancyphones (a bill with four smartphones would be an ugly thing, though).
I flashed the newest PAC3 and wanted to see if anyone else was experiencing any of the few bugs I've run into (I first just updated, saw some of these problems so I wiped and installed, but they persisted).
1. SystemUI crashes: I saw a mention of this on the development thread, but it seems isolated? On that thread it was mentioned that it would restart, but mine doesn't always restart (or, at least, restart quickly). It seems like it will restart when there is a new notification, but not always. No particular pattern to when it crashes, either. I didn't have this problem on the May builds.
2. It seems like there is a longer-than-usual lag after disconnecting from WiFi before it picks up mobile data. Again, not something I noticed on the earlier builds. I use Tasker/Profile4Tasker with the CM profiles, and I thought it might have something to do with that, but I've got it set now so that all profiles allow mobile data.
Other than some general lagginess at startup on some apps, everything else seems to be working. The SystemUI crash is the biggest hurdle; it basically renders the phone unusable until it decides to restart or I reboot.

System ui is just the status bar and such nothing terminal or anything and yeah no telling when it will happen or what triggers it. I use a different launcher than trebuchet like apex or at times nova which helps semi with the lag. another way is also trickster mod from the play store to OC the kernel and apply at boot or even the "other" kernel thats floating around.. hey our phones ain't young anymore things slow down as we get older so will our phones... Yeah thanx to @chillybean our phones are Jelly Beaning like a boss

Thanks for the tips. I didn't realize another launcher might help with the lag....I actually was _not_ using one thinking it would have the opposite effect. I also am trying Trickster MOD.

[Q] So many questions. Total rookie here.

Ok, so I just rooted my tablet, my first time too. But I have a few questions.
I have no idea what custom recovery is? How do I get it, and what are some apps and stuff I should not do before I get it.
What are some apps you recommend? Keyboard apps, uh...any apps I guess.
My biggest question is, I downloaded a emulator called dolphin emulator, so I could play the old gamecube Pokemon Colosseum. But it wont work. I do not know if any of you use this program, but any help would be appreciated. The game actually starts, shows the nintendo symbol, goes to a weird grey screeen instead of the studios logo animation, and then turns black. The fps is around 21, and during audio or the grey screen, it goes to 13 - 15 fps. Any Ideas on what might be wrong? Maybe RAM or something of that nature.
What are things like Nova and Apex?
Also, what do i need to do to install roms? What should I have before I install a rom? And what kind of roms do you recommend?
um...and I guess anything else you could tell a complete rookie. I have no idea what I'm doing. OTL
also, what is the bloatware that i can get rid of?
ugh, basically, what have you done for your rooted note? What are some things you would recommend to another person for their device.
and for some reason i cant download SetCPU, so I downloaded CPU Tuner. What are some settings you recommend.

Ok, my first bit of advice is to start reading. Things like custom recovery are easily figured out with a little research. As far as I know, the only custom recovery we have for our tablets is TWRP 2.6.x.x, not sure what version they are on now since I am not using it.
As for what to do after root, that is up to you. Get the pro version of Titanium Backup, and SuperSU at the very least, they will be very important if you want to freeze/delete bloatware and modify your phone at all.
Can't help you with the Pokemon thing.
Nova and Apex are launchers. Try them out and see if you like one better than the stock launcher. I run Nova on mine.
To install a ROM, you will need to first download TWRP, then flash the ROM. Read the directions for flashing the ROM fully before you do anything.
As for bloatware, start by freezing things you don't use in TiBu, and go from there.
In all honesty, you need to read, read, read and then read some more. You don't want to turn your tablet into a $600+ paperweight.
As for me? I am rooted running the stock ROM, Nova Prime launcher, and I froze a bunch of bloat. It is plenty fast, smooth, stable, and it looks great.
lol the dolphin emulator won't work because it requires an extremely powerful machine. It will only work with maybe 2 or 3 devices currently.
The developer posted this in the app description:
"If you're expecting reasonable speeds out of this, you are sorely mistaken. This will run slow on every single Android device, no matter if it is the most powerful one in the world.
Some caveats
- It will crash. Alot.
- It might need to be force closed and ran multiple times to work.
- It will run slow"
Why immediately install new ROMs? There are no many ROMS for this device anyway. Rooting will help you to freeze unnecessary Samsung software, as already mentioned above (using Titanium). To try different launchers (Nova, etc.) you don't need to be rooted, just install and play with them. You have a powerful machine, learn to use it, use all the features (S Pen, multi-window, pen window, etc.) before playing with other ROMs.
Since you are rooted you must get this app:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2646432
Makes multi window way more useful.
Also Xposed Framework and multi window manager so that you can add any application to the multi window menu.
Actually there are a lot of cool things you can do with Xposed.

Xposed is an absolute joke!

Yeah it would be lovely if the damn thing didn't slow your phone down!
I have an M8, converted to GPE and I proceeded to install xposed. Where do I start? It gave folder opening a stutter, app drawer stuttered badly sometimes even freezeing mid animation and exiting apps to go home also added stutter.
Deleted xposed and everything was back to normal.
Do not run xposed, as good as it wants to be, the thing wrecks your phone.
Yeah , I am a ROM cooker and I don't encourage any of my users to use "Xposed" or thinks lie that , I put in a warning (that normally is not heeded) and they come back with asking us to solved their problems, after investigating they admit in dabbling with "Exposed" settings of which they don't know much about Android in the first place.
They only followed the crowd.

I have the same problem with a S20 Plus after switching to Android 11. Laggy when switching from applications to Home. A little lag when opening applications on the Home section. I tried a hard reset, wipe cache partition but no change. It is possible to change the firmware to another country. Maybe we can solve the problem.
Yesterday updated fine. Had a problems with big lagging but today everything is perfect and smooth without any changes from my side.
It's big update so I made a factory reset
One of the first things I do any Android is turn off all animations in Developer Options.
Do the same on the PCs.
A need for speed.
So did I. But this is not a solution. Did you pay a lot of money for this phone to go into Developer Option and force your phone to work better? It's not like that? So it's not right what Samsung is doing with these updates. And on One Ui 2.5 I had the same lag.
It is very strange that many do not have this problem.

I reset the phone from Recovery Mode, I gave wipe cache partition and I still had lag. I hope it's a software problem. Do you think this lag comes from a hardware problem?
See what the cpu load is when it's doing this.
Turn animations see if it helps or not.
Does it happen in safe mode?

It behaves the same way in Safe Mode. I switched all animations to 0.5. I hope it will be resolved at the next update.

See if it's using excessive cpu or ram resources when that happens... if so track it down.
There may be something you missed, play with it.
Pay attention to any power management that is active, a known source of gremlins.
This is why when I have a fast, stable OS I like, I leave it be.

Unfortunately no...
My device is S20+ Exynos Indian.
Have exactly the same problems.
Samsung always f#kc things up with gesture navigation, I mean seriously how hard is to leave it transparent ff$.
Lag while using swipe gestures is happening for me on Nova launcher. I never use one ui launcher.
I guess samsung is still lagging behind other OEMs when it comes to third party launcher support for gesture navigation.

I was Nova Launcher prime user for a year, but i use gestures and on One UI 2.5, gestures was super snappy, super fast but now on 3.0, i feel like is lagging, like animation is 10 milisecound longer, and i hate it.

So if you disable all animations is it ok?
I never saw the point in them especially if the machine is fast.

It works faster but it is not normal for an expensive phone to work forced by certain settings. To give you an example of how big the difference is, my wife has a OnePlus 5T and it goes faster than my phone ...

Animations by their very nature always slow down a fast machine which is why I always disable them.
Backup all data now. When Androids crash many times the only warnings you get are slow performance and subtle stability issues.
The next boot could be the last on that load. Normally Androids are very stable... if it's a good load.
Try a network reset. Double check all settings and clear system and Samsung apks data as needed. You could globally clear settings but you might as well do a full reload at that point.
You can try running SD Maid to see if it gets rid of some of the junk.
You could try something I normally never recommend, a hard reset. It may not help at all or the issue will reoccur if it's an apk or settings issue to begin with.
If the OS has been heavy used or has had large firmware updates done, it may be that time.
It only takes one bad install/uninstall to screw up an OS. If the load is older then 6 months now might be a good time... nothing like a clean OS with only the apks you use and like loaded.

So the phone was ok on 2.5?
Could downgrade it back to 2.5 if so.
Probably too late to return it; if not do so!
Otherwise having Samsung look it over be the best bet.
If it's a carrier phone, time to start digging into them to make it right.
Sorry to hear of this...
Upside is you get to practice your assertiveness skillset. You can never have too much of that.

Nope. And on 2.5 he did the same. Do you think it's a motherboard problem?
On the other hand, is it really normal to always keep a phone with 0.5 x animations?
