I don't normally start a thread unless its something I released but... this needs to be known!
Add any custom boot animation (there are two available: cyanogen and G2 edited stock animation) to system/media. Back up the current one first. Just use adb, terminal emu, or any root file explorer. Enjoy insta-boot, lol!

i just got the boot animation up and running (stock g2 animated). i put it in data/local though...as instructed. what is the difference by putting it in these seperate locations and do i need to have it in both or just system/media? i am confused.

He's talking about the other folder he put the animation in. I also put the cyanogen animation into data/local and it worked fine. But when I go to system/media there's also already a copy of the cyanogen boot. What to do?

Either location works but I haven't tested data /local position. Delete the one from there and make sure the edited cyan or edited G2 stock is in system/media. Having them in two places is just redundant...

we were all instructed to put it there from the other thread containing the boot image.
having the image in 2 placed is redundant. having an OS read boot images from 2 possible locations is also redundant.
copying the boot image to data/local will also put it in system/media. which is weird.
deleting the boot image from data/local will cause it to not display image on boot. even though its still in system/media

i'm having trouble deleting the stock boot from system/media. root explorer keeps telling me its read only and the remount r/w isnt workin.
i would say data/local isnt viable as a speedy boot option cuz i didnt notice a difference in boot times.

Yeah, you could just flash baconbits if your feeling lazy, lol! It'll add the proper stuff for su,busybox,OC kernel, and put ro secure at 0 for ya.
If you want a good themable stock rom, try fast this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836042 make sure you flash the deodexed one and then flash baconbits or that new fast OCed kernel...
ok,
so i have followed all the tutorials on how to add a custom boot animation to the droid incredible. all atempts have failed and i have tried a variation of ways.
could this be that the custom rom i have wont allow it.
The custom rom i have right now is the Liberated v3.0 custom rom
and my kernal is 2.6.35.13
how come i cant load a custom boot animation.
the only other thing to try would be flashing the .zip file but i dont no if that will hurt the phone like all my data?
Could try rom toolbox.

Boot animations are named and stored in different places on different roms. Could be in /system/customize/resource, or /system/media, or somewhere else. If you have a file explorer like root explorer you can do a search for "bootanimation" and it should find the original lacation of the bootanimation and then just replace it with the one you want. Make sure the new one is named exactly like the original one, and that you set the correct permissioms, owner, and group.

Replace the /system/customize/resourve/VZW_bootanimation.zip. just rename the old one to VZW_bootanimation.zip.bak and then take the new bootanimation name it VZW_bootanimation.zip. also change permissions to the same as the old file, and change owner and group to root.

Well you should rename the original one in /system/customize/resource to VZW_bootanimation.zip.bak, and then copy your new bootanimation to the same directory and give it the same name VZW_bootanimation.zip and set the correct permissions.

That is actually pretty easy. They are PB31IMG.zip files flashed thru hboot. You just have to search for one you like thats compatible with the incredible. I believe there is a huge thread on them in the themes section.

You dont flash it thru recovery you do it in hboot. When you enter hboot, (vol down +power while the phone is off) a white screen will pop up it should automaticly find the PB31IMG.zip and prompt you to press vol up to update. The PB31IMG.zip file has to be on the root of your sdcard meaning in no folders, and named exactly that caps and all.

No you don't. The reason he is only seeing a black screen is because when he made his bootanimation.zip he compressed the zip file.
The animation cannot be compressed.
Use a program like 7zip to make the zip file and use store as the compression type. Then it will work

Your bootanimation.zip permission is wrong. It would be -rw-r--r--. then reboot
Was it even flashable ZIP file or was it meant to be copied and renamed? None of the ones I have used were flashable. As the previous person mentioned you need to correct the file permissions.

I'm fully aware that the ones that I have used (and the one I created) are not flashable however I was under the impression that they can be packaged into a flashable ZIP. I have not attempted because I just copy it and set the permissions. As far as the permissions on the OPs screenshot I was agreeing with your assessment that the permissions on the file are incorrect.

The samsung4u.zip is a Samsung animation bin file...which I realize I didn't need...but I think I just need to reflash my rom and start over...I wasnt paying the best attention to where the bootanimation.zip should be stored and whatenot before, nor did I really research how to do it. hah
I tried looking around but most guides/remedies seem to be for androids in general, kinda a noob at this so I apologize if this counts as spam.
I would be very thankful if someone could help me out with this recently after flashing ironrom I have this hideuous frog boot animation which replaces my stock one and I tried backing up my stock one and replacing it but when I replaced it, there was no change. I backed up before flashing the rom.
I checked in system/media there were a few boot-related files I think but I'm not sure, going into bin I found bootanimation but it didn't have the .zip extension.
Also, I can't seem to find the bootanimation.zip like most guides on replacing bootanimation tell you to do, some pointers would be helpful.
**Thanks in advance!**

I'm thinking I should just reflash to stock since nothing is working but I'd really like to leave that as last resort as this seems like a really trivial problem which I'm just not handling correctly thus the many complications.

You should just be able to copy all 3 qmg files from the previous Ironrom or any LP rom for your device and put them in that folder.
That should be it.

The ones in the screenshots have total access. I have tried limiting it to r-r-r-w with no luck difference.
Seems like the shutdown animation works though (it did before) but now the lower half is grey probably due to the different resolution size.
