I have Liquidsmooth v2.2 rom installed and I went through replacing the boot animation.zip with a different custom .zip but all it did was erase the Liquidsmooth animation and it boots first with the Samsung logo then galaxy s III logo and then its a black screen for the rest of the boot up. I'm not sure how to fix it at this point. I also flashed the samsung4u.zip using recovery...not sure if that's what messed it up but I would really appreciate some knowledge.

Your bootanimation.zip permission is wrong. It would be -rw-r--r--. then reboot
Was it even flashable ZIP file or was it meant to be copied and renamed? None of the ones I have used were flashable. As the previous person mentioned you need to correct the file permissions.

Buddy, these are Bootanimations files which are not flash able zip files. so as per OP Screen shot, permission is incorrect.

I'm fully aware that the ones that I have used (and the one I created) are not flashable however I was under the impression that they can be packaged into a flashable ZIP. I have not attempted because I just copy it and set the permissions. As far as the permissions on the OPs screenshot I was agreeing with your assessment that the permissions on the file are incorrect.

The samsung4u.zip is a Samsung animation bin file...which I realize I didn't need...but I think I just need to reflash my rom and start over...I wasnt paying the best attention to where the bootanimation.zip should be stored and whatenot before, nor did I really research how to do it. hah

Add any custom boot animation (there are two available: cyanogen and G2 edited stock animation) to system/media. Back up the current one first. Just use adb, terminal emu, or any root file explorer. Enjoy insta-boot, lol!

we were all instructed to put it there from the other thread containing the boot image.
having the image in 2 placed is redundant. having an OS read boot images from 2 possible locations is also redundant.
copying the boot image to data/local will also put it in system/media. which is weird.
deleting the boot image from data/local will cause it to not display image on boot. even though its still in system/media

If you want a good themable stock rom, try fast this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836042 make sure you flash the deodexed one and then flash baconbits or that new fast OCed kernel...
So I found this fantastic boot animation, and decided I wanted to change. I searched around, and found a method where you replaced 'bootanimation' in system/bin and changed permissions to 777. It did not work. Then I tried the old, Samsung firmware method and it worked!
Here are the steps (using Root Explorer):
1. Find a suitable bootanimation.zip
2. Place it in data/local
3. Reboot!
You can of course place it there using any other method. No need to modify any permissions. It should work.
Thanks dude

I put it in both system/media and data/local, but when my phone boots, it's just a blank screen. What gives? And of course, when I swap it back to the stock bootanimation.zip using the same method, it works like a charm. Are there some sort of specifications I'm not adhering to with my JPGs?

I've found that when you have it in both places, it won't work.
IDK which Rom you're on, so it'd be hard to tell you which is correct.

Hey, I took a look at your file: it looks correct, unless the compression on your txt file is wrong, which I can't see from here.
(But it looks right.)
Anyway, I don't know how you're installing it, but putting it in data/local along with system/media will not work.
I made a couple of CWM flashable zips for you right quick, since I'm not sure which rom you're on:
Use this one for "stock" rooted kernel:
edit:nopenopenope
Use this one for the others, including AOSP roms:
http://db.tt/9zIhRr4i
Note: YMMV, as I've seen posts lately about custom kernels that don't support custom bootanimations... good luck with that, that'd be beyond my control.
Lmk which works for you, though.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
EDIT: Jesus, don't flash these!
edit two:
Dude, I got crossed up and thought this was for a completely different device:
I thought for some reason this was the EpicTouch4G Forum.
(The advice about where to put your bootanimation might work, as will the flashable "non-stock" version, but the updater script for the "stock" kernel zip file will NOT. It will try to write to a specific dev/block, and that is NOT for the Gnex.
Sorry. I'll pull that one.)
Sorry, I should have mentioned my ROM. Android Revolution HD 2.1
What happened when you tried flashing them?

Exactly, I had same troubles.
Use 7zip, and change the "compression level" setting to "store". That means no compression. It should do the trick.
Hi
Does anybody have a CWM flashable Zip for the Nexus4 Boot Logo.
Just flashed a ROM & I have the boring old "Android" on startup.
I'd like to have the glowing Nexus "X" logo back again
Thanks.:good:
I'd just download a ROM with it and extract it. However, you might like this. Don't remember where i found it but it matches the nexus perfectly.
Here's a better idea of what you're looking at.
you mean boot animation
I use the bootanimation provided above and like it. Works on my Galaxy Nexus also.
Here's the link for the original X from the Nexus One. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1402764 I actually prefer this over the new X.

What he said. Unless the person who posted it says its a flashable bootanimation.
To verify, open up the zip file. If it's a bunch of folders named /part0/ /part1/ etc then its not flashable.
Flashable: has a folder to /data/... or /system/media
chances are they're not flashable. but open to check.
Same here,
after I tried to get a custom boot animation it only shows the default "android" logo on boot.
I messed with the premissions in /styem/media/ can I revert that ?
+1 for the idea of a flashable version - specifically one compatible with Cyanogenmod
I have been running nightlies via CyanDelta and would LOVE to have a bootanimation zip that I could plop in the auto-install script to bring back the stock Nexus 'x' boot. Sadly every flashable bootanimation for the original nexus logo I have tried seems to install the files in the wrong location for CM.

store the bootanimation in /data/local/
after flashing a new nightly or whatever, it will keep your bootanimation. only way for it to reset is if you do a factory reset. enjoy.
(worked on my galaxy nexus, not sure if it works on N4 but it should, try it, shouldnt harm you.. pretty positive that its the same on N4)
edit: the bootanimation i linked earlier is a cwm flashable one. to manually do it just extract bootanimation.zip from the zip file downloaded.

used to be able to do this on my Droid 1 and loved messing with it. It's not part of the kernel so it must be boot loader... do we have any way of tearing that down? I'm assuming we'd have to be unlocked... ha. Would love it if someone more knowledgeable would chime in.... thanks.
I tried looking around but most guides/remedies seem to be for androids in general, kinda a noob at this so I apologize if this counts as spam.
I would be very thankful if someone could help me out with this recently after flashing ironrom I have this hideuous frog boot animation which replaces my stock one and I tried backing up my stock one and replacing it but when I replaced it, there was no change. I backed up before flashing the rom.
I checked in system/media there were a few boot-related files I think but I'm not sure, going into bin I found bootanimation but it didn't have the .zip extension.
Also, I can't seem to find the bootanimation.zip like most guides on replacing bootanimation tell you to do, some pointers would be helpful.

You should just be able to copy all 3 qmg files from the previous Ironrom or any LP rom for your device and put them in that folder.
