Question about rooting and updates - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys I just got my Nexus 5x last week and I'm pretty familiar with rooting. I rooted my 5x and installed a custom kernel (ElementalX to be specific) and I was just wondering what I need to do to be able to keep my phone up to date with the latest security patches. Do I need to wipe to stock every time I want to update? Thanks

You can use fastboot to update each month. You would flash the boot, system, vendor, and maybe radio and bootloader each month. No loss of data. Then boot into TWRP and flash SuperSU and other mods. A great reference is section 9 in the guide below:

Unlock bootloader, and flash CF auto root via your PC.
You don't need TWRP, if you have encrypted device then it will not work... And when you want to update or flash anything use FlashFire app...

You can't install OTA update when you change something in system (Xposed is a change in system)... But you can download factory image into the device and flash system, boot, recovery, etc (no data) with FlashFire, root it again and install Xposed at once in few minutes...

Yakju 4.3 OTA link

My wife's phone got the OTA update. It already downloaded so I just had the file name, showing it is in cache:

But based on other OTA updates for Yakju it appears that I can put the normal first part of the url in front of it, so download link is: http://android.clients.google.com/packages/ota/google_maguro/6c7ff815e7762f651ad6f8c74e5cb281093f1e0b.signed-yakju-JWR66V-from-JDQ39.6c7ff815.zip

I've just flashed it with CWM alongside with chainfire's root and it worked flawlessly
Thank you!
Have you problem with the new SuperSU?
I have read this: "Be careful with that version of SuperSU. It is not yet stable (on the N4 at least). There is an issue where for some reason (and we haven't figured it out yet), you lose root, and the daemonsu process starts eating up ~70%+ of your CPU time. Battery dies pretty quick. "

could you make a small guide with the steps you followed for flashing?
I assume that with this method you don't lose any of the personal data. right?

I've flashed 20 minutes ago, until now It's working fine, I will post if some problems occur
@sakis_the_fraud
I've had already CWM installed, I'm assuming you also have it:
1.- boot into CWM
2.- backup
3.- flash OTA zip
4.- flash superSU
5.- Reboot system
That's all

I just did this myself - stock 4.2.2 and stock bootloader.
Adb sideload worked fine and I didn't lose any data.
Only strange thing was my live wallpaper was uninstalled, but everything else seems ok, and I just reinstalled the wallpaper from the Play store.
I don't see "yakju" mentioned in the software build details anymore like other releases???

183.46.15 Firmware update

So I got a notification today for a new firmware update to 183.46.15. WIthout thinking I hit install, even though Im unlocked and rooted. Now the phone kept rebooting into TWRP. Any idea when we should have a flashable firmware for this? Just had to factory reset.

In order to install system updates you need to be on full stock firmware and recovery. Also, If you receive that update again, please capture the zip and post it.

To elaborate (and make it easier to find in TiBu), that's com.motorola.ccc.ota, or "MotorolaOTA 1.0".
I'm freezing, too, as it'd be easier to RSD back to stock than to manually put it back together if I wanted to update (in other words, I'm lazy).
I am curious, though, on what exactly the update changes/fixes. D'oh, I missed coronado's post.

Will android pay work if I'm un-encrypted but not rooted?

Has anyone tried following the steps from this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mUq1xdJ-7-E
but stopping before flashing the superSU? Will android pay work after a reboot?
As long as you are using the stock ROM and not rooted, I don't think it will be a problem.
I followed that guide and even flashed superSU, but when I realized Android pay won't work with root, I unrooted. I was then able to add my cards in Android pay. Hopefully purchases go through fine, no reason they wouldn't as long as you aren't rooted or modified the stock ROM.

Does Android Pay still work after a reboot? Somehow I read somewhere on forum it doesn't work after reboot.
And is your recovery TWRP?
Do you notice any performance increase when taking multiple pictures after decryption?
Thanks,

Just follow the video ^^ to unlock the bootloader, install TWRP and format data. After the format the encryption is gone. Then just do not flash SuperSU if you do not want root.

can i backup my data, then go to TWRP and format data, then I get a decrypted rom?
someone said I need flashing a force decrypt kernel.. i am confused.

is the Official update the same as the 'unoffical' PE6 and should I go official?

A few Q's...
im on unofficial PE6.
Is it worth downgrading and upgrading to the official PE6?
Will I lose everything and have to reinstall from scratch?
Is there a shortcut way to do the upgrade from unofficial PE6?
Is there anything different in the official build?
Did I forget anything?
Same build number. They're identical. Your build is already official and was all along. You can confirm that by looking at Settings->System->About device->Status, where it says "Device status = Official".
I was wondering about going from pe5 to official

It depends on how hackable you want your phone to be. BPE5 doesn't have the latest security updates, and probably won't let your phone accept the next OTA security update, whenever that comes out.
I meant like, what's the easiest route to get to the official build from pe5

The question is.what.happens on the next.update. For those of us that sideloaded early, will we be able to get those update or is it inevitable that we will have to go down to APE3 first?..

If you've sideloaded BPE6, you're fine. If you're still on BPE5, you'll likely have to sideload APE3 (or some other release) before receiving subsequent OTAs.

Rooted Nexus 5X update question

Hi there guys! I own a rooted Nexus 5X. I currently received the OTA update for Nougat and would like to do the update. My question is: how can I do this update without reverting everything to stock first? I don't mind loosing root access, I would just like to update using the OTA update without having to revert everything back to stock and then doing it. Can you guys share a little knowledge here? I have TWRP installed
I think you can maybe sideload the OTA or flash with Flashify or something. It's really recommended to do do a clean install with a factory image and then reroot, especially if you're coming from M. Takes no effort to just back up your SD card with your PC
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Download FlashFire app, go to official page for Nexus 5X OTA packages, download it(around 1.1GB) and flash it as factory image through FlashFire app.
Untick flash recovery.
After that just flash SuperSU zip from twrp and you're rooted.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk
Using FlashFire Pro, the previously downloaded OTA,(approx. 50 MB), when FlashFire opened, it detected the OTA download and I simply hit the Flash button and it performed flawlessly. Preserved root and recovery.

Download FlashFire app, go to official page for Nexus 5X OTA packages, download it(around 1.1GB) and flash it as factory image through FlashFire app.
Untick flash recovery.
After that just flash SuperSU zip from twrp and you're rooted.

This is what I get when I open FlashFire and it defects that I have a OTA. Should I change anything there?

FlashFire won't do the new security update because my /system is modified. I had to modify it to make AdAway work.
What do I do now?
Seems fine, just press flash.

Didn't work, it gave a warning about the system being modified and I hit ignore, then the update didn't take.
Edit: nevermind, now it says system up to date. I guess it worked
Glad it worked, for any future update just do the same procedure, it's the easiest method

What if you also have Xposed and Adaway, as well as Kernal mods? How would I update (cleanly, of course) if I have this stuff?

It didn't work for me either at first, then I checked the "Restore boot and recovery images" option (The "Mount /system read/write" option was already checked, so I left it). Once I checked that option and flashed the OTA update (NRD90S downloaded from Google), it installed just fine.

So if I have stock MM with modified system (adaway, xposed) and its encrypted. Could I upgrade to N by using the 1gb update through flashify? What about vendor?
I'm sick and I don't think my brain is working so I just want to make sure I understand correctly. I'm trying to do this without using a computer. Thanks!!
I don't see why not, although I'm not 100% sure.

I had Xposed installed with a few modules, like mock mock location, root cloak and other two. What I just did was uncheck the flash recovery and left all the things FlashFire told me to. Had no problems at all I believe there's not an Xposed flasher for 7.0 am I right? Still doesn't work?
