Polarization on the screen? - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Not a complaint or a request for help but more of an observation and interest in why.
Today we had sun.... yes sun in the uk.... I know it's very rare. Anyway I was wearing my sunglasses, went to turn on the screen and black... maybe I didn't press the button hard enough?.... nope nothing... what's broken already?
Took off my glasses and to my surprise the screen was already on. My sunglasses have polarized lenses and conflicted with some sort of polarization on the phone screen to let nothing through.
On my M8 the result was just a distortion on the screen not complete blackness.
Anybody know what purpose this serves in improving the screen?... other than making polarized glasses a no no when using it?

The M9 was polarized in landscape. No idea why they decided to polarize the 10 this way.

I had some problems with mine too, so I just threw it away

Every LCD panel is polarized in some way. Do the same thing with your old device and rotate it to find the angle.
That being said having this orientation polarized on the 10 is a pretty bad decision

Polarization allows lights of a specific orientation. Unpolarized light travels through an entire 180 degrees like in a circle. Polarized sunglasses use a polarized filter that's orientated vertically that allows only vertical (90 deg) waves to go through.
In a nut shell, the HTC 10's polarizing filter is orientated horizontally if you cannot see the screen in portrait with your sunglasses on. Polarization reduces eye strain by significantly reducing the number of light waves going through without affecting the brightness.
This orientation is actually a pretty good idea if you are using GPS in landscape mode or taking a picture outside with your phone. Imagine having to take your glasses off in order to take a picture or look at the GPS...that wouldn't bode well.

I'll take photos tomorrow but I can confirm the phone usable with polarised glasses if you have the sharp panel.

sadly, it just means that people will text and drive with the phone turned sideways. also sucks if you are listening to a playlist and try to skip a song. Or walking down the street, or in a park.

Every device known to man is polarized, many vertically and horizontally. Why is it so talked about on the 10?

If I remember the s7 isn't. And some are radially polarised like the sony z2

Although all screens may be polarized, they can polarize it at a 45 degree angle to make the phone visible it portrait or landscape, but half as bright. Also, there is some type of layer they can put on top of the screen that would eliminate the polarization, or radial polarization. Kind of disappointed i can't see my 10's screen in portrait with sunglasses on.

Have tianma panel and lucky no problem about visibility tru polarized sunglasses

Sadly I think your glasses might not be polarised as I have a blank screen in portrait and u have a Tianma panel.

Thought so, then went to optic shop and asked to wear polarized oakley and Ray ban.
Went outside to check it out properly. I do have seen the screen both portrait and landscape thru glasses.

I can see mine fine in portrait but when I switch to landscape I get the vary dark grey screen. But that is normal any lcd screen should do this.

I have the tianma and the exact same experience as this. Landscape is clear and normal, portrait is dim, but semi-usable. Sometimes when reading something, i have to take my glasses off for a second to see better.
And yes, my sunglasses are 100% polarized. When I wear them while looking at my Dell laptop, the screen is COMPLETELY black. Which sucks pretty bad when I want to work outside on a sunny day.

Guess I'm not the only one. Walked out of Sprint store last Friday, got to car put phone in pocket and drove back to work. On way back into work, I got a text, with polarized oakley prescription sg's on, I could not see my screen. Kind of freaked out a little bit lol

I've been doing research and it seems a possible fix could be in using certain screen protectors. Looking at other phones that have the same LCD issues, it seems people have had varying degrees of success with either matte screen protectors or tempered glass screen protectors. Unfortunately, since our phone is so new, I haven't found a documented case of a screen protector actually fixing the issue.
Anybody have any more info on this? I've been wearing polarized sunglasses for years and I don't see switching to non-polarized as a viable option.

LG G3 camera lens scratches?

Hi all.
I've received my brand new LG G3 32GB international D855. Awesome phone, really.
Anyway I've encountered some hardware related problems:
1st I've noticed that top and bottom of the screen are brighter, but I think it's due to the LCD technology itself (used amoleds in the last 3 years so a different technology with different and, imho, worse problems).
2nd, and the topic of this question, my camera is showing few very light scratches on the back lens. From my tests, fortunately, I realized that they're not visible in any kind of photo.
I used a cover and a screen protector since I unboxed.
My question is: is anyone experiencing similar issue? Is the lens so easy to damage?
I'm pretty worried because my Note 3 never showed a scratch in 7 months used without any kind of protection...
Sent from my LG-D855 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I have also used a bumper case since the 1st day. I checked my camera lens just now and did not notice any scratches. I think it might be a manufacturing fault.
Not sure my G2 had a ton of scratches too but it never came out in photos... so you should be A-OK... maybe just different glass types.
Note 3 has other quality issues *shakes* lol. S Pen die much? lol.
Meanwhile I realised that the issue with the screen is an actual problem called screen bleeding, related to LCD's back illumination.

I've had mine since 2 days prior to main release (know a guy, mwohaha)
I managed to drop it from my hand, when falling asleep in my chair after working with some stuff for 12h straight - it fell on the floor, and slid a good 20-30 cm across dust, and some "gravel particles" from my shoes - camera facing down. NO scratches.
I'm actually quite impressed

So they sent me a butter unity?
Wasn't sapphire indestructible?
Anyway I removed cover and the screen protector, actually they only covered the beautiful design... Just try a few day without nothing and see if the situation deteriorates.

I guess you got a faulty unit; I'd send it in to LG, or at least go on the live chat. That should do the trick, I hope!
sounds like a manufacturing fault. just swap it...i used the bumper too no scratches so far

If I'm not wrong I have 2 years to have free reparations/replacements right? Scratches aren't affecting my photos and are only barely visible with naked eye and only in determinated light conditions. If the problem becomes worse or photos will deteriorate I'll update this thread with my experience with LG's warranty system.
For now this phone rocks.

I've noticed some "light leaks" on the top and the bottom of the screen. It's nothing so disturbing, but it's not acceptable in a high end phone like the G3. :/
Anyone else noticed this? Is more visible when you're seen a darker color on the entire screen.

I've also, but it's very hard to notice and when watching films or playing games is almost invisible.
Anyway guys I've an update for you: I'm not crazy scratches are very visible under direct light and I'll definely contact the seller...
Little update
Sent the phone back to the shop (yes, directly to the seller because it was less than 10 days I have bought it :victory, it should get there on Monday.
Let's see if the screen leaky borders, creacky cover and most important buttery lens are enough for a replacement :fingers-crossed:
I'll update you when the shop will contact me.
Another and last update
The shop received the faulty phone today and replaced with a new one
I should get it tomorrow :victory:

I'm testing it now, they also replaced the wall charger that produced a kind of electric noise (and I forgot to tell them it did...)
Another update after the screen tests.
EDIT:
Anyway, a note: the "old" G3 had a "tight" USB which was a pain to plug... the new one works as it should
the "old" G3 had orrible blacks... the new one has very darker blacks
The screen still have the barely visible blue bar on top (seem to be a G3 feature) and has little brighter bottom borders... so I think it's the LCD itself and not a defect. I tested the screen with a simple app called something like Screen Test and every color is uniform (no illumination problems, darker bars/leaks, nothing.
THIS PHONE DOESN'T HAVE AM/PM BUG!
EDIT2:
LOL, AM/PM bug still present

By any chance can you tell me if you have a model with revised hardware? Because i thought all G3's had a hard to plug in usb (including mine).
About the borders i seem to have them too. I think its normal because i can notice them on all lcd displays like the iphone.
On the lowest screen brigtness, during day light my navigation bar is darker than the black bezel on the phone so i assume that yours is the same correct?
And my charger also starts hissing when charging the phone. Weird thing is it also makes the phone hiss when i have earphones on. I dont know if i should be worried.

Accessed phone infos from dialer and it says rev 1.0 like the "old" one.
Yeah I've set brightness to auto and the navbar is barely visible, not like an amoled but the "old" phone had blueish black which was horrible while watching movies even in a dark room with brightness set to minimum
And the new wall charger has the same problem so I think it's normal and it shouldn't explode
I'm not sure about the headphones+charger issue, sorry.
I can hear interference with earphones but I'm not sure of what you mean...

Yeah i thought so.
The blacks are normal to be a little bluish. All lcd are like that and even mine to a small degree.
Thank you for your reply lol. Good luck with your phone buddy
Scratched? How about fully cracked!
First - the phone was not dropped or have any impacts other than what you might get from walking with a phone in your pocket. Other than normal daily use, safe handling and really careful use the phone had nothing happen to it. I cannot pick even a medium bump that happened, but now I have a cracked lens with a hole exposing the camera beneath. LG is warning me that 'mishandling' is not covered ... I certainly did not mishandle the phone in any way.

can't see screen very good with polarized sunglasses

Anyone else noticed that when you wear polarized sunglasses, you have to be off angle to see the screen of the 5x?
I got mine last week and it makes it real hard when wearing the polarized, at least the Smith sunglasses. Any remedies besides not wearing polarized lenses?
Same problem with the original Nexus 5. Fix is to get a different phone or glasses :/ .
Same here. Can't view the phone in landscape mode with polarized Oakleys.
Some screen protectors might be able to help this
No, it's how the screen outputs light and at what angle. There's no solution other than taking your glasses off or viewing the screen from a different angle.
That's what I figured. It makes it difficult when using the waze app while driving. Just have to look off angle and I can see it.
Just noticed it today with my polarized oakleys
Put a polarized filter on your car window, then cops can't see your phone screen!
Make sure it is oriented correctly for the way you hold the phone.

Screen leak?

http://https://youtu.be/icCu9VpkDf4How many have light leaking through a gap between the metal frame and panel?
Look at my picture posted below..ty
At first I thought that I might have a similar problem but of you're using a screen protector that extends to the edges of the glass but does not sit flush with the bezel then the protector almost acts like a fiber optic cable in the sense that the white light from the icons on the screen shine through the edges of the protector and reflect off the bezel. I was using an IQ shield protector and this effect was really noticeable. I had some other free protectors and the IQ shield was peeling away so I decided to switch it out and since then I haven't seen the issue at all. As for the kid in the video he seems like a *****, I honestly couldn't see the bleed through effect he was trying to portray in his video.

I just posted a photo of mine. this isn't silly imo. The kid is showing his when the room is lit up. If it was low light or dark you'd see it better. Check out my pic and tell me what you think? Xda tweeted this kids video, which then lead me to checking mine. Mine doesn't have an edge to edge protector on it. I have a gap that allows light to go through.
I just looked closely at mine, and there is no gap or light bleed.
http://phandroid.com/2016/08/21/galaxy-note-7-quality-control/
i have a little of the light leak... but does it matter? Not really.. it doesnt change the quality of the image or screen.. plus I have a case on mines, i wont even notice..
Thanks for the response. Imo, it matters a lot. I don't always have a case on and I can see the leak looking directly at the screen head on. Resell value will suck too.

stains on the screen

Hello.
So I use polarized sunglasses and I noticed some stains in my screen. Only noticible with polarized sunglasses.
Can you test yours.

All I can tell you is not to wear polarized glasses - I had a funny episode when I saw my N10+ screen on bright sunny day while wearing new, highly polarized glasses: I went back home to take picture of that but the problem has 'fixed itself' and I still didn't realized what caused that until someone in the forum asked: did you take your sunglasses off? I'm a rational guy but this think made me look paranoid., but I felt embarrassed enough and asked mods to delete that thread, which wasn't fair to Samsung when I titled it something like "total failure of N10+ display"
Well, anybody can make a mistake ?
Those are stress patterns in the Gorilla Glass, normal.
The polarized sunglasses "see" them as the light coming off the screen is polarized.
Decades ago I developed the habit of tilting my head to view LCDs with my RX polarized sunglasses on. Now it's a learned reflex action I do almost instinctively.
Do the same when looking at a oily road surface... to gain an optimum view.
You can also view where the weak spot(s) are in tempered glass and clear plastics as they will be darkest. Helpful if you need to break it... or don't want to break it.

Screen Polarized?

Is the screen polarized or is it possibly my screen protector?
I was driving with the top down and polarized sunglasses and noticed I could barely see my screen unless I tilt my head to the right (horizontal mounted)
Just wanted to see if anyone else noticed this.
I wonder if it's the preinstalled protector. Wearing my sunglasses I can barely see the screen. My s10+ right next to the s20 is clearly visible aside from being a bit darker obviously. I don't want to tear off the protector to see if it makes a difference..
I've got a WS glass protector. I can view mine in either horizontal or vertical no problem. It disappears if I point the top of the phone at 2:30 or 7:30 only. So really no problems for mine.
Its your sunglasses not working well with that type of screen, i have Oakley polarised and several different smartphones have the same issue for me.
This problem has been an issue for years, a search online will tell you the filters on the polarized glasses negates the light on the cell phone screen and how to work around it, try turning your phone 90° and see what happens.
