Hi guys,
I finally jumped the ship from samsung to HTC, so far I'm a happy user for the past 3 days.
However, I stumbled upon a strange thing.
After setting up my pin code and finger prints, I could not find phone encryption option anywhere
The next thing I searched online with no joy, to my puzzle, I contacted customer service who reported that HTC has removed the option
guys, is that even possible in 2016

Hello Mj, Thank you for contacting HTC Chat support. How may I help you today?
Mj
Mj
A quick question please, I can't find encryption option on my phone
Nathalie C.
Alright, what do you see when you go to "Security"?
Mj
I'd like to encrypt the internal storage
Mj
I've had a look in the Security section, there is no option to initiate encryption
Nathalie C.
Please go to "Storage", you should see the option to encrypt it there too.
Mj
Not there either, I'm puzzled
Mj
I set up finger print and pin number
Nathalie C.
But, does it allow you to set up the finger print and pin number, Mj?
Mj
Oh yes
Nathalie C.
Oh, I see.
Nathalie C.
Unfortunately Mj, it seems that the "Encryption" feature has been removed from the One 10, I am sorry.
Mj
Oh, this is strange, this world be the only phone in 2016 that doesn't have encryption
Mj
Plus this is standard android feature
Nathalie C.
Sure, I understand but it seems Google removed it because you will be able to see it in "Storage" as "Phone Storage Encryption".
Mj
Sorry, what does it mean?
Nathalie C.
That should be able to encrypt your phone by looking the option "Phone Storage Encryption" under "Storage" through settings.
Nathalie C.
Mj, can you please let me know if you see that option?
Nathalie C.
I can see that you've been typing for a while now, let me know; are you still with me?
Mj
No Natalie, I can't see any thing that refer to this under storage, all what I see is break down of the used storage and how much is free :
Mj
Sorry, still here
Nathalie C.
I understand and I apologize about this situation Mj, but yes, it seems this feature was removed, I am sorry.
Mj
Hmmm
Mj
Are you sure about this, because it would mean that we'll seriously consider returning the phone?
Nathalie C.
Yes, it seems so Mj. Because you should see something regarding encryption on the phone or under Storage, Mj; my apologies.
Mj
It's ok, thanks for your help anyways

Look for the grayed out option. You can see it from the top of the security menu.
It's enabled by default.

Settings-storage-press "phone storage"-scroll to bottom. Encryption is the last item, but it's selected and greyed out and can't be disabled
Newer devices are forced by Google to be encrypted by default, which is the case with the HTC 10.
Ok guys, sorry for the delayed response.
Here is what I did;
I did a full reset, and set up the device accounts and passwords with application installed.
Guess what, the encryption options appeared.
Then started installing apps that I normally use.
Long story short, I use LASTPASS as my password manager. It uses accessibility options to auto-fill.
This disables my encryption strangely enough [emoji33]
I hope that helps someone and thanks for your responses.

I am glad you posted this; I just discovered my startup PIN vanished and had no idea why.
I disabled LP accessibility service and re-enabled startup PIN.
I don't suppose there is a way to have both...?
Sorry, not that I know of
You'll need to disable the accessibility access.

Hey Guys/Gals,
So my screen won't turn on but fortunately, Samsung is fixing it for free! Thats pretty much the only good news that I have.
For reasons that I'd rather not share, there were contacts added to my phone's internal HD (this is an assumption), rather than adding their info to Google/Gmail. If you can recall, when adding a new phone, you are prompted with 2 choices: Phone or Google. On many occasions, I selected the "phone" option.
To my dismay (noob fail), I didn't root my phone after the Froyo update. Hence, I cant access : data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/contacts.db <--- where i believe the contacts are stored.
I can't transfer my contacts from one phone to another (via the hub and 2 wires) b/c the appropriate settings can not be set from my phone, due to the powerless screen.
I have exhausted all options that I could think of and am now finally turning to XDA for help. Can anyone offer some help please? I will be greatly appreciated.

I responded in the other post you made on the same subject. Sprint can do it as long as it turns on. Got the machine.

This isn't true according to what they told me. They said they need to configure some settings which would allow them to do so. These settings can't be configured unless the screen is on <--- what they told me :/

That's probably what they needed to set. I remember the girl at the Sprint booth didn't have to set anything to suck the contacts off my Palm Pre but I guess it is different for Epic contact sucking.
Hi,
I am planning to swap to a new SIM card only for international calls - after which I will swap back to my main SIM card.
Will this affect anything? (Account reset / etc)
Do I have to off the phone when swapping the SIM card?
Thanks

1 - Yes I would DEFFO turn your phone off as you swap the sim card out.
2 - If you have your google account linked to your SIM then when you take your SIM card out, you will lose all of your apps and downloads etc.
It should return once the SIM is put back in, never the less its a ball ache !
What do you mean 'google account liked to SIM'? I've used several card with my old Desire and nothing got deleted.
its a security measure. if you have paid apps (maybe even free ones as well) and change the sim card, it logs you out of your google account, so the data on there cannot be compromised.
think about it: if somebody stole your phone, likely thing is they will put their own sim in first thing. its a good way to help keep your data secure
I didn't know Google had such a feature, and I also didn't know you can just log out of your Google account on the phone (I tried once, just to see what happens, and it told me it would do a factory reset). Could you please provide me with a link where I can read more about it? I'm currently using the app Cerberus that can locate and remotely wipe the phone, but a stock feature always comes in handy

Good for you, obviously you didnt have it linked to your Google account then?
What a pointless comment.
Like the comment above says, its a security measure.
If you link your SIM to your Google account, which most do, then when that SIM is removed, so is the Google account, and therefor any Apps linked to them.
Don't comment if you have nothing useful to say.

Oh, I'm so sorry I didn't have anything useful to say to you. I asked because I didn't know such feature existed and I hoped someone here could explain how it works, or show me a link where I can read myself. I do not, however, see what your post had useful to say, but I guess not everybody understands how forum work

And reading your comment I didn't get the impression you wanted to understand more, I got the impression you were trying to contradict me and it went wrong for you, because you don't know anything.
And if your so clever, go write a definition for "Forum" see who cares you mugg.

i had a quick 2 min look on google, can't see anything except for similar threads to this.
i'll admit, it is an assumption that it is a security feature, no other explanation for it happening to be honest.
i don't think you can use it to manually log out though, who knows what goes through their minds when they code these things, again, there's probably a logical reason why you can't manually log out with out factory reset.

You could be right, I have never had any screen lock enabled. Unfortunately, I don't have any spare SIM cards right now, so I won't be able to test it, but thanks for the info, I'll keep it in mind

Hello, my stepdad passed away last week and we were left with his phone thats locked with a fingerprint plus a security password due to the amount of people that tried putting their fingers on it anyway.
This phone has a lot of important pictures and videos of my little brother and phone numbers of people who still don't know he passed away, the notebook he left behind only has outdated numbers and we haven't been able to find these people yet.
He didn't know about developer tools so he didn't know about OEM unlock, USB debugging, and didn't even have usb media transfer enabled, due to that there's no way for me to use twrp and aroma file manager as far as I know.
Is there anything I can do to get into this phone without losing the files?

If you can sign in his Google account, on another device, you can remote change pin.

Thats through Find My Device right? When I tried it it said that if the phone already had a lock screen I wouldnt be able to use the temp password.
To get all these photos and the other stuff stored on the device you need to know your stepdad's user login anyway. Every change of the security settings requires a password confirmation.
But maybe there's an active login on the notebook you mentioned. Did he use chrome? The password could be stored by the password manager.
As a final step you could try to reset the password with his phone number if still active.

Unfortunately none of the passwords saved in his account worked on his phone, but we discovered that all of his phone's pictures and videos were automatically uploaded to Google Photos (I should have checked there first and I'm embarrassed), and we had a few emotional hours. Now that we have the pictures we don't need to unlock his phone anymore. Thanks for everybody who helped, I really appreciate it.

I'm glad to hear that you could solve the problem!
Hello guys,
This is a mystery, before posting here I have searched the net for a solution but nothing works that I tried.
The option on "None" on the Lockscreen type setting has gone, disappeared. I think (but not sure) it happen after one of the recent updates. I am in Australia.
I have spent nearly an hour on the phone with Samsung customer service clearing credentials and a lot of other stuff, but no solution.
I did a full "Recovery" type of factory reset but still the "None" option is missing. Samsung has now told me to take the phone to a Service Centre for repair.
This seems an over kill for what must be a software/firmware problem.
There is a strange twist. Within my family there are three modern samsung smart phones running Android 10. Two have the "none" option missing and one does not.
Guys, please check your phones and if anyone has a solution I would love to know it.
Chris
Strange.. I have a G981W and have the option available.
What do you see under device administrators in settings? any corp work accounts/school accounts on the device? encrypted sd card?
I read older posts that by creating a guest account , rebooting and removing guest account, somehow that brought back the none option. However they were from 2015-2017. Also read that some 3rd party VPN apps can cause this. Maybe secure folder? (unsure on that last one as i don't use it).
Might have to try a full device wipe (unless that recovery did a full wipe).
As far as I know I did a full wipe factory reset, I did it from within the Android recovery menu,
I dont understand the guest account option, dont seem to have that option (to create a guest account) anywhere in Settings.
Not using any VPN's of any apps for that reason. Bare phone, minimum stuff installed after factory reset. "None" option still missing.
If you did a factory reset it would have run you threw setting up the device again as if it was brand new(login to google account , setting pin/passcode/fingerprint etc). If that was a case, did you have an option there to set "none" for security on lockscreen?
As for guest mode... looks like samsung has removed access to guest-mode in oneui, I never knew that till going to look for it myself as i never have used it lol
Well I'm out of ideas, I'm wondering if this is maybe a carrier specific thing?

When I set it up as new phone I bypassed all the pin and face ID fingerprint options. It defaulted to "Swipe to unlock" ,the "none" option was never available.
I don't think its a carrier related problem. As I mentioned have three devices (on two different providers) two devices the option is missing and one its available.
I thank you for giving it some thought.
wait... the 2 that are not showing "None" as an option, are they already set to swipe to unlock with no security on lockscreen? THe one where it is available, does it have a pin/passcode etc on lockscreen?

Here is the story of each Smartphone. None of my phones have ever had a PIN or Passcode or fingerprint set up on them except the S20 as an attempt to fix the problem. During out of box setup the security option are always "skip for now".
Galaxy S20 +:- The main subject of this discussion, you know the story recent factory reset etc
Galaxy Fold:- Not long after initial setting (out of Box) was changed to "None". Then used in that state for 6 or more months. Then as part of my checking to find out what was wrong with the S20+, the fold was set to "Swipe to unlock". A short time later when I tried to return the "Fold" to "None" the option had disappeared on it as well. I would try a factory reset on this phone as well but I think its would not fix the problem just like on the S20+.
Note 10 +:- Does not matter What I do the "None" option remains intact and available to switch too at any time. In other words works perfectly.
These are all family phones, Not rooted, no special weird apps etc. I think its pretty bad that when you do a factory reset the phone is clearly not reset to the way it came out of the factory. I would imagine most people think that it would be.
Chris
Very weird. Only thing I could come across was having smart lock on with on body detection on. But that still doesn't explain why after factory reset you still have this .
As for factory reset, when done, the device will revert back to the most recent updated revision. This includes security patches. You will not go back to true "out of box" factory software. But essentially a clean install, including most recent updates that have been done via system update .

I thought as much about the updated revision and security patches with regard to factory reset. I have always had a suspicion that it was after an update that things stopped working.
I was thinking about trying to flash back to the original firmware version. Have done it once before many years ago. Its just a bit of a stressful process.

Is there a way to get into the phone after a reboot if the PIN is unknown? The owner died and the family needs to get into the phone. Any pointers appreciated. Thanks!

It is out there on how to do it, search for it, because we cannot know if this is indeed a truthful and/or legal request we can not answer. Sorry!
"it's out there" - yeah, I figured that much. I'm not about to upload a death certificate on a public board, you'll have to forgive me. Any actually helpful pointers to get this done? Just trying to help the family. Thanks.
Android All_In_One_Tool maybe
Is Jack Bauer involved?
I wish! He'd have the thing enter it's own code just by giving it an angry stare
So I found the tool mentioned above, not quite sure which function I'd use to take a crack at it. Best option would be a giant "remove pin" button, highlighted in yellow for me, lol... The 9 Pro isn't explicitly stated as supported either, hope that's not an issue in this case. Am I going to Recovery/Flasher and Device Rooter or Decrypt internal storage?
Any new Oneplus phone that has a PIN also has FBEv2. Everything that matters on the phone is encrypted at rest.* Even if you bypass lock screen, you need the PIN to open any data in the phone. If the bootloader is unlocked, you can try backing up data with a custom recovery like TWRP or orangefox, but most if not all files stored in internal storage is encrypted.
Basically, if the PIN is lost, bypass the lock screen is no use and you can wipe the data now. See if the PIN is written down somewhere
Mmm was the phone linked to Google? It could be what you're after has been uploaded to Google drive ( photos etc)
its worth a shot
