May security update, just released. Will it patch bootloader exploit? - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just noticed that I got a security update notice today. I believe it is the monthly one for May security patches.
I recently received a Note 4 from a swappa purchase. I have not rooted and BL unlocked it yet.
If I apply the security update, will it patch the method we are using? I'm not knowledgeable on how to decompile the update file and look at what is in there.
If anyone has already accepted this update and still been able to BL unlock, please let us know.
Thanks

Sorry if it was. Just touchy about this thing till I get in BL unlocked.

I hear ya. I'm the same way. Well I know for sure that it's fine with the one you have currently installed, so I'd probably just not apply the recent update to be safe and go ahead and convert it to DevEd if that's what you're planning on doing.

I wouldn't take any OTA updates, no matter how much it nags. Get yourself on a supported ROM and check with its developer to see if OTAs are shut off or if there's a way to kill the nags.

Agreed, don't take any ota's...just unlock your bl and get permanent root..the note 5 stock ports are also really nice once you're unlocked.

Ok. I got my phone rooted, bl unlocked, and will install the Paul Pizz ROM later today.
It's great to have a phone with the features I need and the freedom to get updates when Samsung abandons this phone in the near future.

The OTA will fail to update if you're rooted.
I had to Odin back to stock and then apply the OTA update.
So yes, the update will break root.
I haven't tried to root it since, so I can't report any progress there.

It failed because it said your device is modified and prevent you from updating or it failed in the middle of updating?
tmobile needs to speed up this apps to sd update.....
I love how they are trying to hide the space the system uses under miscellaneous. This might trick people into not complaining about having more available disk space. I've heard good things about this update... Just want it already.
Still lovin' Tmo more than Sprint!!! 15-26mb beats 100k all day long. And I enjoy being able turn the camera sound off without rooting.

man, i got excited for a minute when i read new firmware update.
T-Mobile is usually quick to send out updates, I wonder why it's taking them long to release this one? The S3 got the JB update pretty quick if I'm not mistaken.

you can blame me for the update not being released and it wont be released for months, according to my sources. I talked to t mobile about all the bugs they have, so they said fine, we will do everything never to give bugs again, hence a long update period...It was probably my phone calls that lead to this wait

You son of a ..... ;__; :crying:
I realize it's always an agonizing wait to get your hands on the newest firmware. However, there's a bright side to it. You all are still able to root and tinker with your devices.
I haven't been able to root the newest firmware using motochopper and am hesitant to try CF-Autoroot because in the case it does trip the flash counter and I loose root, I won't be able to reset it.
So, by the time tmobile sends out the update, there hopefully is a way to root.

Next time if your already rooted you can grab the app voodoo OTA Rootkeeper, which should be able to protect and reapply root after an update.

Thanks for that tip. However, I doubt it would've worked because since I was rooted, the update failed to complete installing around 25%. So, I had to odin back to stock and then apply the OTA. Probably something to do with a locked bootloader.

Yeah, the phone status was 'Official'. You'd have to be in order to get OTA updates/notifications.
Initially upon rooting, the status changed to 'Custom', But I followed the guide below to revert it to 'Official' while retaining root.

1/16/17 update N920AUCS4CPL1 - - looks like another security update

I just got another monthly update for my AT&T Note 5 labeled N920AUCS4CPL1 with the December 1, 2016 security patch included. I can't find anything else on this update but again, it looks like another security update - - NOT Android 7.0+

Can someone please post a link for adb push or odin files, so we can update our n920a as we are not in USA?
Thx.
Wow---this update is KILLING my battery. Google play services is running in the background like crazy. I've lost 10% in 2 HRS with little use where as before the update I would have lost 10% by 2 PM---UGH! Anyone else having this problem?
I updated to PK1 the day I got my phone (last week Monday).
The battery life for me has been superb (since I flashed through ODIN and started setting it up from scratch).
I want to get PL1 (for peace of mind), but I don't have an AT&T SIM card, so I'm waiting for a complete file that I can flash through ODIN.
I don't want anymore updates because I'm almost out of equipment contract now and I want to hack my Note 5. I wasn't aggressive about this until recently but somehow I had auto update on. So my phone started the download but I rebooted it and stuck it in the microwave.. (panic style) Then I tried to downgrade to 5.11 using the PH4 and the PH2 firmwares in succession but PH4 soft bricked me. Then I tried flashing N920AUCS4CPK1. and I got success. Wiped it all back to November 2016 security patch. (I dunno if this works after it installs, I have a sinking feeling it will not work.. There is no firmware available with Dec 2016 security patch that I'm aware so no way to recover if I'm correct in assuming the bootloader is blocking me from downgrades)
Edit: I want stress that fact that my phone never said Dec 2016 security patch, during all this it was still Nov 2016 patch

With AT&T bootloaders, I thought that was always the case.
You WILL take the update when Nougat arrives. I'm eager to know when that will be. I have no intention of rooting my device to trip Knox.

I find another update from S4CPL1 to S4CQA1 I think this is January security update but AT&T did not released yet. If someone whan to try it is ADB sideload or from sd-card. Remember if you go for it will erase your data. So backup your phone first.

October Patch OTA issue

So I am having the issue posted in my pics. I am not part of beta. I am Verizon on September patch. Never touched my sim since I got device. Bootloader is unlocked but that shouldn't matter. Anyway if someone can help me figure out according to the screenshots why I can't update it would be greatly appreciated.

I got the same problem as well. I'm on Verizon and haven't found a fix.
I've got a Google Play Pixel XL on Verizon, no problem with update. Full stock locked bootloader.

I don't understand how you got the OTA so quick. Even with Google saying last month that doing a check for update manually should now get you OTAs instantly, it's not working on my stock bootloader unlocked XL.
Same here.. got the OTA October Android 8.0 Oreo Security Patch without a hiccup... I also have a locked bootloader as well on Verizon Pixel XL version. Really wish these bootloaders could be unlocked but that's another topic that has been saturated to death... lol.
Damn that sucks for you guys that aren't getting it instantly. Checking for update seems to work for me. But try clearing your Google play services app and then see if it will let you download the update you guys.

Google Pixel XL unlocked bootloader and update failing to install. Showing me update size of 50.6 MB.
Will try and patch manually.
I have a Verizon Pixel XL on T-Mobile and i got the October 5th patch yesterday without issue. It took a while for only 64.5mb, but it took it. I did have 1 random reboot this morning though.... BTW, like i said, i took the update with a TMO SIM and still have gray OEM Unlocking
I had the same error. I disabled Block This! and it installed without problems.

Still waiting for my OTA Oct 5 update. I am complete stock, locked bootloader (never unlocked or rooted). Damn Check for update button not working for me.
So I tried flashing the September patch to both slots manually and taking the OTA but it failed still. So I went ahead and manually flashed the October patch.
I am wondering if it has to do with me upping to Unlimited Data plan on Verizon.
I just checked for an OTA update manually and nothing showed up. I'm still on September patch. Google edition, locked bootloader and not rooted.

Factory reset..
Wow. Two system updates in the last 10 days. Just updated BLN-L24C567 to B366 from B365. Security patch is Nov. 6.
I guess this makes Huawei/Honor phones a lot better than Lenovo Moto phones. Once I recommended my father to buy a (Lenovo) Moto X Pure. The phone received updates something twice a year (!), and its Nougat update came 13 months (!) after the official Nougat release, and maybe 10 months after when Lenovo promised this update would be available. Huawei has a better track record than Lenovo IMHO.
13 months is a lot, and yes, Huawei/Honor has been better in the recent years when it comes to updates
Indeed. They give update if want to else simply discard. btw see what Apple was doing with regular updates.. they admitted and was a let down for many (but accepting it needs some real guts for a brand like Apple)
Who knows other OEMs who gives regular updates are doing similar things
edit: scratch that

OTA update with bootloader unlocked, no root, 2 XL

I am a bit confused by all the posts about this subject
I would like to unlock my phone, for future rooting, when everything is more stable, meanwhile I want to get OTA updates on the phone "automaticaly", is that possible
You can definitely unlock the bootloader and still receive OTA.
And for your first point, rooting is plenty stable already, so no need to wait for that. Though if you aren't well versed in fastboot or root upgrade processes, you should definitely read all the most recent guides on it to make your transition smoother.
Thank you :good:
I did my share of rooting with Samsung S1, S3 and S5
Then bougth an LG V10, had to buy a "IMAGE" from a Chinese guy, using Alibaba "paypal" in chinese, to be able to activate LTE 20
Have been quiet for a couple of years, and didnt really have the need to root to have the V10 doing what I wanted, but want to be able to root if I have too much free time

You will probably find this less confusing than Odin. But you need to read up on using latest SDK, adb, fastboot, etc.
We're now using Magisk to root and be able to use Paypal.

There's issues with Magisk and some other phones, but topjohnwu has a Pixel 2 I believe, so he tests on that.
Magisk for our phones is perfectly stable, the only issue is people don't like the dtbo image being edited to remove AVB 2.0/dm-verity.

You can buy the locked Verizon phone from the Google Store, but apparently you ordered the correct one (unlocked, carrier free). Devices on the Verizon network (both locked and unlocked) receive regular OTAs, so don't worry- the status of the bootloader has nothing to do with why your device hasn't received the update yet. The difference is having the unlocked variant, you don't have to use Verizon specific images, and you can change carriers at any time, including internationally. Usually with just a SIM card change.
The OTA updates are staged randomly and roll out over a couple of weeks. Your OTA will eventually come by itself. Sometimes people wait a month (or even longer). If you don't want to wait, then just download the OTA and sideload it. Every month, the new OTAs (and full images) are posted by Google. You are free to download and flash them. Instructions on how to do this are provided by Google at the top of the download page. You don't even need to be bootloader unlocked to sideload OTAs.
