I just got my new Defy earlier today from amazon.co.uk and I've got a question regarding the phone, sorry if I've asked something that has already been answered (didn't find a answer through the search).
The defy just simply doesn't seem to charge, when I use a USB-cable from the computer nothing happens at all. So I try a USB-charger which is connected to the wall and then via a micro USB-cable to the handset. This makes the phone go into a "charging-mode" showing a big battery with a flash on it. The percentage of battery quickly rises from 0% to 60% (in about 30 sec) and then stays there. Now I've tried to charge it for ~3h but if I then start the phone and enter the pin-code and then chose my prefered language for doing the initial setup it shuts down.
The phone then starts to load and does the same procedure of jumping from 0% of battery to 60%. The green "liquid" in the battery during "charging mode" is moving which in my mind should indicate that the phone is charging, but it doesn't seem to work.
If I unplug the charger the phone dies instantly.
When I plug the charger in the phone a small white led flashes quickly and then it's black again.
Should I just let it charge for like 10+ hours and hope for the best? Or are there any other possible solutions out there?
Just to clarify, I haven't rooted it or whatever, I haven't managed to get it to start even once.

I think you have used accessories other than Motorola. Usually this happened to me when I used apple charger converter with a motorola cable.
If that is not true, its better to return the product since amazon has a 100% cash back replacement warranty. They can also send you a brand new phone later.
Ye, the charger I am using is a Sony Ericsson micro USB charger with the motorola cable. I'm situated in sweden, so the contact (english) from motorola doesn't work here.
Could it really be that since the usb-chargers shouldn't really vary that much? I checked it and the output from the chargers (the one to the wall) are the same apart from the sony ericsson's has 0.1 less V (DC).
I guess I could try and hit the stores tomorrow and buy a socket adaptor so I could use the charger motorola intended for usage in england.
As a last alternative plug your cable to a pc and leave it for 1hr. If it charges, then phone will power up on its own. Use cable that came in box with phone.

major letdown this morning.
I had the phone be charged over the night and it all looked neat this morning with the battery indicator saying a 100%. THough when I unplug the phone from the charger it shuts down and wont start again. It starts charging from 0% again if I reconnect the charger.
Now I've got two possible explanations.
Either I've received a faulty battery or I'm just plained stupid and have missed something when puting the phone together, theres some kind of plastic protection on the battery which I'm supposed to remove before inserting it?
If the latter I'll go hide somewhere, cause I can't see any atm.
You can charge the phone on USB through the computer only after you've installed the driver package from Motorola on your computer. I noticed that too.
I bought a T-mobile phone on eBay, unlocked it, and just downloaded the software package from Motorola's US website. If you can't find it, let me know and I'll dig up the link!

But the phone just wont react when trying to charge it, other then a small light flash up in the left corner.
I've emailed both amazon and motorola support, awaiting further instructions from them on how to proceed before I try anything else. Of course this happens on a weekend when the support is out partying -.-

I guess I'm looking forward to a month (atleast) of sending phones back and forth.
I know this is all basic stuff you've probably already tried:
1) The correct wall charger (not sure if this is an enhanced micro usb, but some manufacturers wire them differently).
2) Pull the battery and let the phone sit a bit.
3) Using the correct usb cable to computer, experiment with different usb ports on the computer (this alone saved my wife the trouble of taking her phone back). Make sure you're plugged directly, not through a hub.
4) Does the phone actually run normally while on power (plugged in)? Not sure, but can you do a factory reset on this phone with it plugged in?
5) Have you tried charging on airplane mode?
Same happened to me.
I charge the phone about 20 hours, both by wall charger and USB, and couldn't charge it up to 100% only 70%. (motorola charger)
Nothing helped, so I returned the phone to the seller, and they gave me a new one - it's charging perfectly.
Today I had my One X happily connected to my pc, just transferring some files over by USB. Then when I wanted to disconnect it, it showed a lot of 'not getting enough current to charge and operate at the same time' messages. Dismissed them all, though it was time to put it on the wall charger, seen it's critical battery status.
Once I disconnected the phone, it immediately powered off and would not come back to life again. It was, however, greeting me with a flashing red light while on the wall charger. No matter what I tried (bootloader, long hold power button, charge it for some time), it remained completely dead.
Now I did get some new micro usb cables from eBay. Very cheap ones. Now I think these are the culprit. Apparently, while in file transfer mode, these cables were unable to provide sufficient current, causing the phone to drain the battery completely. Once I wanted to charge it, it couldn't boot to charger mode due to the battery being completely empty.
Hooking up with the original HTC cable again, it still showed the red flashing light. Exact same behavior. Until I (for the heck of it) tried to bash the power button quickly. It suddenly came back to life again and started charging again through PC.
If you find yourself in the same situation with bad USB leads (something to do with resistance of the cable?) or a red blinking light, try tapping the power button quickly instead of trying to boot into recovery mode. It might save you a postal return and a week or 3. Or your ass, if you rooted it before it stopped charging.
When I had my sensation I had this every now and then. I had to remove the battery to get it to work.. Nice to know that there appears to be something I can do to sort this out if I get this now

It was mentioned that the flashing red (or orange?) meant that the temp was too high.
Just let it cool down, and it will come back.
It definitely wasn't hot. Also, it wasn't flashing orange. Just slowly red.

Your quite right. Overheating on charge flashes red then green. Never seen a flashing red so can't comment

It could well be the battery level is considered too low to operate. So to protect the circuit and the battery, the device is not allowed to turn on until it is sufficiently charged.
This is currently (no pun intended) happening to my one x, left it plugged into my pc via the htc usb and got flashing red light after a couple of minutes, after a couple of minutes more it stopped flashing and became a solid red light (a sign it is charging from v low battery from m experience) pressed the power button and voilà its come back on. I can't believe htc would let the device get to such a critical state of battery before powering down, can anyone enlighten me as to why it would do this?
(thinking about it i was showcasing the handset to my apple touting buddy and had 3 pretty heavy apps running, it was a couple of hours after i noticed it had killed itself so i'm guessing they were still draining away the power from the background??)
I'm having the same problem. My phone was off when i got home and it wouldn't turn on (I assume the battery was dead). When I put it on the wall charger the red the red light didn't turn on and my phone wouldn't boot. I tried several chargers and cables and also tried to connect it to my pc. After leaving the phone for a few hours (unplugged) i tried to connect it to my pc again and i got the blinking red light. A few minutes later I decided to plug it into the wall and the red light turned on and now it is working normally.
anyone got an idea why it didn't charge at first?

Poor quality charging/data cable
A poor quality charging/data cable will also impact the ability to charge the HOX in your car. I have two cars, in one I was using an old Blackberry cable and Griffin charge adapter (1amp output) to charge the phone whilst using Car Dock and navigation software. After trial and error I got the screen brightness correct and the phone charged satisfactorily. I say satisfactorily because I still think any electronic device which is connected to an external power supply of sufficient electrical current should operate and charge at full spec. In my other car (1996 Land Rover Discovery) I was using a cheap ebay charging/data cable. Using the same apps and screen brightness the HOX would lose all charge over about a two hour period. With the same Blackberry cable used in my other car, no problem. Hence the cheap ebay cables are now in the bin.

The HTC-cable isn't that good too. I use a Nokia-charger to charge my HOX. Charging is much quicker. Maybe the HTC--charger (and cable) was crappy but i never touch them, i use the Nokia charger and dito USB cable.

Small update.
This problem just happened to me. 1 cord gave me flashing red while plugged into the wall and pc. I switched to my other cable and its charging and functioning normally. Cord was the problem.
I had a similar issue with my one x.
It discharged completely, then when I went to charge it I just got the red blinking light for ages. I left it charging overnight thinking the battery was so low it needed a while to charge enough to be able to switch on.
But in the morning it was still flashing and the phone was very hot, so I thought the battery was blown.
So I came on here and saw a suggestion about holding the power button and the volume down button. It went to the boot menu and said there was not enough power for a factory reset or something, so I selected recovery. I then got a warning icon and the phone switched off again, but this time with a solid red light. A
After a while I was able to turn it back on again.

I have the HTC One VX. I know this isn't in the same topic, but since I found the thing that helped/worked here, I thought I should share my experience. So I bought my new phone on Sunday, so it is roughly 5 days old...not even a full week. I charged the phone before I went to bed to roughly 80%. I made sure all apps and what not were turned off and pressed the lock button. I woke up in the morning and checked my phone to see what time it was. Had 78% battery left. I left it on my dresser for roughly 2 hours and when I got back from class, I grabbed my phone to check if I had any messages.
The phone didn't turn on and I didn't even get the flashing orange/red light. So I tried charging it and nothing. I changed wires and nothing. I frantically searched the internet and stumbled upon this forum/thread. I tapped the power button at least 15 times consecutively and the phone barely flashed orange. I tried to plug it in again and rapidly pressed the power button 10 more times and the screen finally turned on. It started charging and I checked the battery life. Somehow, in 2 hours my phone drained itself of 78% battery life when it was on the lock screen (its also set to lock after 15 seconds of inactivity) to the point where it couldn't even turn on.
The phone/battery was not even warm/hot or w/e. It had not touched any water. No idea what caused the immense power drain, but glad it is working. Thank you so much for this help

It happens to me allso in this morning, in my opinion is like this: The phone is turning off when basicly you have a little bit batt (lets say something around 5% max) and its turning off to protect data and is showing to you batt empty. Then it cames a user with a charger connected to a power supply (house charger,car charger or directly to pc's usb). You must use a good usb to micro-usb charger (the original ones are't good usb cables) try to use a Nokia usb to micro-usb cable, This was the first problem most usualy. The second one is to pay a HUGE attention to UC, don't uc'it so much because then the charger board will not charge your batt so well. Keep yours HOX safe and anjoy it. Have a nice day boys and girls.
Just got my M8 first time I turn it on it had half charged battery. I drained it to a point when I turned it on two times and than it went dead. I mean I could not turn it on. When I connected the charger no light came on and no response from phone. I leave it till toomorow and see if it will turn on.
I fear HTC is using the same chip for controling battery charge in M8 which if flawed by infamous HTC charging bug. If this is the case it is really start annoyng me and htc m8 will be my last HTC phone. I had so far Wildfire, Sensation ,Desire and all off them had a charging bug. Wildfire and Desire would not show the battery full even though battery voltage was at full charge. My luck? Or HTC has some poor quality components? My S2 still charges battery fine till today.
Ok. Anyone can check their M8 if you have charge bug if you battery is almost drained off power if it will turn on or stay dead?
If my won't wake up tommorow after all night at charging I'm gona exchange it on warranty and see another sample has the same charge bug.
Why HTC is not doing something with this CHARGE BUG on the newest devices? Puzzeles me.
I brought mine to 1%, cycled the power, then used it again till it died. Plugged it in, charging icon came on right away, charging light as well. Hope this answers your question, I didn't really read the whole post.

My M8 has just died because it wont charge, happened just yesterday. I left it plugged in over night and still nothing. Its a holiday here at the moment so have to wait until Wednesday for HTC to open.

Hi.
I've been having loads of problems having unlocked, rooted, S-Off, SuperCID & installing the ARHD ROM on my M8 (International) but it was, in a fashion, working. I too am on holiday & whilst I now know why I was having the issues & have the solution to them, I didn't have time before I left to resolve them. So, I brought it away with me to use for basic currency conversion & translation tasks & it was, as I say, functional. Last night, I decided to play a game on it & it was being laggy but I put this down to the issues I've been having, so didn't worry. It kept being laggy, so I tried restarting it to see if that would help but once it had powered down, it took ages to reboot, so I tried using the power button to switch it on. Again, it took ages & I briefly fell asleep but when I woke up, it had booted back into ARHD, so I figured all was okay.
However, when I awoke this morning, the device would not switch on. I plugged it in to see if something had caused the battery to drain during the night but nothing happens; the charging light doesn't come on & it doesn't power up, no matter how long I leave it! It is, to all intents & purposes, behaving as though it is dead (bricked?) but I don't know why it should suddenly do this, which is why I was looking for answers & came across this thread.
If anyone has any bright ideas, I'd be more than grateful to hear them
Mine needed a replacement charging board and chip unfortunately but HTC Vietnam was pretty fast, only took 3 days so wasn't too painful.

Yes, this sounds like a very isolated bug/defect. Since it is not reported by very many, the best course of action is RMA. ?
My T-mobile HTC ONE M8 has done this as well, however I was after serveral hours of trying everything I could think of, connecting it to the computer and various chargers and trying to hold volume up and power and replugging it to charger, it finally started charging. This has happened 2 times in the last 2 weeks.
Now that it's charging I wonder if HTC will take it and replace the charging board or battery. I also worry that I have it rooted and s=off that they won't honor the warranty.
There is something similar to this going on with mine - Was charging (maybe quite slowly), battery very low, phone reset. Booted into charging screen, amber light flashing. After a while (and trying to boot a few times), no light, nothing. Charge current is 0.00A
Edit: I remember something like this with the old Desire - there was a trick to reset the charging circuit, which was maybe locked up and not getting a good po_reset, so never enabling any charge. Something along the lines of unplug, hold some buttons for some time, plug, profit... Does anyone remember this in detail?

I have a particular case. My phone is a HTC One M8, but I have protected it with a special case with a battery extension, home made. I have assembled myself the batteries, chargers and boosters. My booster has a small issue and does not enter safe mode when battery is low. It warns about low batt with a LED, but still tries to deliver 5V. The booster is connected to the phone via a flat cable, stolen from a wireless charger; those chargers have the smallest USB plus I could find ever, and, I found this plug only in these decvices.
When the main battery of the phone is empty, I switch the booster on, and recharge the phone with the backpack. I have to look at the LED; when it's red, I have to switch it off. Everynight, everything get charged on the same single plug. One plug to charge both batts.
The advantages of my solution are:
- phone can last 18h with heavy work (wifi, bluetooth, GPS, and screen on, continuously)
- heavy case to protect my phone, plus tampered glass
- one plug to charge everything
- the micro-micro USB plug is ALWAYS in the phone. This means, the female plug of phone can not get dirty, or filled with dust. I never unplug it, so it does not age. I never plug a classic USB cable directly in the phone, so, no chance to break it. I have broken 3 or 4 times the back charger plug; if I am in hurry, I can exceptionally charge the phone directly; next day home, I can fix it.
This night, I was using my phone, and switched the backpack on. I could not plug my wall charger, because it's home made, has an issue, and makes the virtual keyboard erratic. I fell asleep with the phone in my hand, and the backpack went red ... for 4 hours. During 4 hours, it was trying to deliver 5V, and failed at so. Since my battery was delivering an unstable +5V, the phone was trying to charge, was staying on, but could not properly charge. In the end, all batteries got flat.
This morning, when I woke up, I plugged the stuff; only the back-batt started charging. Phone itself refused to charge; screen was black, and charging LED stayed off. So, I fell in what we call the "phone refuses to charge".
But, because of my set-up, I can *NOT* be in the dirty or broken plug case. Just impossible. And because of context, I just knew I had a flatt battery. This is technically called "deep discharged". And it contributes to aging of batt. Like overcharging, this heavily affects the total capacity.
I knew I could fix the issue by opening the phone, and putting a LiPo charger directly on the batt lines. I have loads of standalone chargers. I had a standalone wall charger for my previous HTC Sensation. But with the M8, we can not just open the case, and take the batt out. It's much more complicated. So, I have been Googling for more than half an hour. 95% results were about "remove dust of plug" and "bring it to the shop to change your plug". Some people also mention "a bug in the charger chipset".
I have plugged the phone on a classic USB charger, but via an USB meter monitor:

The USB meter was indicating 5V 0.03 A (or 9V 0.01 A, depending on source). So, the phone was using a bit of energy, but clearly not charging. I have left it 4h. Just in case, can not harm.
Then, I pressed together power, and volume up. The phone started to boot after 55 or 65s. About one minute; but clearly way longer than 42 or 47s found on forums. It started directly to some rescue mode, then, started to boot normally, without doing anything. Just released buttons during the first white screen. After booting, I have a normal phone. Did not need to perform any action. During boot, the phone had 2% batt, and was charging normaly. But, the charger LED remained off; I waited 5mn, untill I got 4%, unplugged the charger, replugged, and then got the orange LED.
Remember that your M8 can accept up to 9V on input. QC2 Chargers are really faster: with 9V 1.5A, you can charge your M8 from 0% to 100% in 95mn, even if you are intensively using it (gaming, wifi, GPS). Next gen phone will accept 12V. Even if manufacturers ignore that. HTC buys chips, and don't fully read specs. Aukey chargers are more powerfull and better reliable than official HTC ones.
Remember that many "slow charging" issues are in fact due to bad cable: charger is good, phone is good, but cable in between has high gauge copper, too thin wires, and produces voltage drop between plugs. HTC phones require 4.4V at the plug.
Remember that M8 and most modern phones (same for Samsung) are now MHL (wrongly called OTG): they are true USB hosts; you can plug any device on your phone; just buy an MHL (OTG) cable for 4 euros, and then a USB hub, and then any device: mouse, keyboard, USB monitor, ethernet dongle, SATA adapter, CF-uSD adapter ... and for 12 euros you have HDMI converters. Modern smartphones are real computers. Use them.
My friend gave me his HTC One X to fix (PJ46100) and he said it has been dead for months. After a few diagnostics, and about 30 mins on charge and 10 mins in my PC, it isn't connecting to the PC, I have no word from ADB, the phone itself has no LED light showing, no vibrations, nothing. My aim here is to get it on at LEAST in fastboot/recovery mode. I have never used a HTC One X but being addicted to my 4.3 Desire, I know how the usual HTC fastboot works. I know its power + volume down but is there any other way? I remember my Desire was Power + back button, EVEN though everyone online said it was Power + vol down.... Does the One X have another method?
My mate wants me to get his photos off it, and thats it, its mine
So yeah, any word on what it could be?
Doing loads of research, its a 70% chance of being a battery issue and a 30% chance of the board being dead.
I am not afraid of taking this baby apart so go ahead and ask your questions.

Hi there, I also have the same problem as yours. No led when charging, not detected by pc, its basically a paperweight. I also had done my research and I can conclude mine is a board issue since the problem occurred after transferring some files from pc and the battery is perfectly fine then. If you believe battery is the culprit, try put the phone in a sealed bag and put it in the freezer. It might bring the battery alive. I have took mine apart and I noticed that during charging, the board will be warm and same goes to the battery. This would suggest the phone is taking the current from the charger.

I've revived dead phones where the only issue was that the battery had lost so much charge that it wouldn't charge via the phone's charging circuit e.g. Desire S and One V. Removing the battery and charging directly using another device solved it both times. Got to be worth a go. There's guides on removing/replacing the HOX battery on XDA. Just gotta go carefully!

Hi there dude.
I just replaced the battery, and yeah. Even without the charger, the board went warm for about 45 seconds. Charging does nothing, even with the new battery.
So I am guessing its the board.
Ouch.
This isn't even mine. My mate had this collecting dust since it broke about a year ago and he asked me to see if i fixed it.
His dad wanted some pictures off it, so I guess they are out of the picture (pun not intended, but eh.)
Anyway, do I buy ANY board or is there a special board for this model number?
eBay brings a few up when searching "HTC One X".

I had tried charging the battery using the external charger and after connecting it to the board, it became warm and after few hours, it subside. I checked the battery and the voltage is 3v, the minimum discharge voltage. So i can say that the board suck the power and change it solely to heat. Is your htc one x tegra or snapdragon version?

First of all - yes, I am completely aware that there are MANY similar threads, I've spent almost 3 hours now finding solution, no luck. I hope some good soul out there will be able to shed some light on my case So here it is:
Today, I was caught in a bad moment with low battery, and the phone discharged completely and turned off. I've connected it to the charger just about 5 mins later max, but the blinking LED of death got me there I have it on a charger for about 4-5 hours now (original HTC charger, of course tried both, the wall and the usb), the LED is still blinking, phone is cold (it's getting quite hot when it's charging normally), no reaction whatsoever, can't even enter any fastboot or recovery or anything. I've tried every possible combinations I have found, vol+ & power, vol- & power, both volumes & power, long, short, nothing helps. Now what's different than any other threads out there? The phone was NEVER rooted, I didn't unlock bootloader, flash, nothing. It was as stock as it could be since I had motherboard replaced (2 years ago, on warranty in HTC service). Now the warranty has ended, so I'm really hesitating to send it there, as it's propably gonna end up with new motherboard again, no matter what the problem really is (I live in Poland, and that's just a common "fix" no matter what the problem is). Current motherboard is the one with CID B25 (the one that never got any update, so it's stuck on Kitkat for 2 years now). Everything was working completely fine just a few hours ago, nothing indicated any battery problems, it just discharged, and now I can't get it to work.
Does anyone have any helpful ideas?

I had the same problem. To fix it, I had to charge my phone for 30 minutes. After that, I remove the back cover (to access to the battery). I connected the phone to my PC and I disconnected the battery. I wait any seconds (maybe 10 seconds) and I reconnected my battery (still the phone connected). The screen display a law charge of my battery (around 5 percents) but I can start my phone. After that I fully charged it and all seems OK !

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to revive an HTC Desire 820 (dual-SIM model) that I have. There were several hardware issues with the phone - main one being the battery _completely_ blown and bulged out! So, I replaced the battery, along with the complete battery charging board, and the complete LCD display (which was also gone!)
Now, the issue I'm facing is, even after replacing 3 of the major parts with new ones, the handset is just not coming back to life! The red/orange LED on the front just keeps blinking (indicating that the mainboard is still working) but the phone simply does not respond to any combination of buttons, or even when I connect it to my laptop!
My core question is: Do I really need to have the _original_ HTC charger and USB charging cable (both of which I don't have) to get this thing up again?
If I can get some help and some clues as to what exactly is wrong here, I'll be really, really, REALLY thankful to you...!!!
