How exactly does one Root the phone - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

I realize that today is release day, but everything I've been seeing suggests that rooting is a simple process and the difficulty comes in when you try to unlock the boot loader. It has been some time since I've been on an HTC, and I know this question is probably, but how exactly do we root so TWRP can be installed?
Thanks in advance, especially if I've missed the thread that tells us how to do it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it should be
Unlock bootloader > Install TWRP > Flash root .zip
The bootloader should be unlockable if you bought your device from HTC (no carrier) and it should be quite easy, the instructions are on HTCDev site.
After that, you can flash TWRP img, and fter that just flash rooting .zip package through TWRP

Thanks. I bought the phone from Verizon. so I will have to wait a bit. I may try the HTCDev just for giggles to see if it will work. I'm sure sunshine will be available before the end of the week.
Thanks for the response!

Sunshine is available now.
Verizon devices are not supported and no ETA. VZW handsets, initially do not look to be bootloader unlockable.
Currently no root options for Verizon handsets.

Well...That's disappointing. But I'm not worried. The HTC dev's have always pulled through. I'm certain it is only a matter of time.
There isn't enough bloat on this phone for me to really worry about.
Thanks for the reply

[Q] Should I accept the OTA update?

I'm sitting here with my Verizon HTC One on the "Software update ready to install" screen. I'm not sure if I should select "Install Later" or "Install Now". I guess my main question is, has there been any indication that someone will come up with a workable root solution for the M7 with the OTA KitKat update? I know there isn't one for Jellybean.
Sorry if this is a n00b question. If it has been asked and answered before, please point me in the direction of the thread. Thanks!
Edit: I see a couple of folks have asked about this in the Q&A forum (where I probably should have, heh). Mods, please delete.

If you are s-off dont take the OTA. you can get the firmware here and it would be like you took the OTA.

if you want root, it will cost you $25 for the license from Sunshine. I would do sunshine before taking the OTA because it might not work on the latest OTA.
if you dont care about root, just take the ota.

Ah, gotcha. I've read conflicting reports about Sunshine's success with the Verizon HTC One, so I wasn't sure if it was still a valid method. Thanks for the tip. I'll do that before the OTA update.

You should never have to pay for Rooting. Android is a better community than that. Setup bounties, but never force payment. My opinion.

Has anyone noticed HTC Clock and HTC Lockscreen updates in Google Play after the new OTA? If so, have you installed and had any issues? I'm reading the comments and some say HTC Clock update causes alarms to no longer work and HTC Lockscreen update causes reboot loop.

Just bit the bullet. Everything is working OK so far.
I was able to successfully S-off via SunShine, flash TWRP and root. Then, after making a complete backup, I accepted the OTA update. It didn't mess up any of those things.

[Q] TWRP For 550/551M Zenfones

So I'm wondering if any intrepid dev is willing to compile TWRP for our lovely phone. I am willing to contribute to a fund for whoever is able to get a functional version of the recovery.
This is such a nifty phone. The WW version works great in the US, and it'd be nice if we could get full functionality sooner than later.

Well for starters, we'd need the bootloader unlocked (as per Asus) and a preferably better rooting method to get started. Other than that, you'll be pleased to know that we may end up receiving OFFICIAL TWRP since DeesTroy is planning to get a Zenfone 2! (as mentioned here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=60352547)

I thought the bootloader was already unlocked, as you can push system.img via bootloader. Or does the locked bootloader only prevent the changing of the boot.img file?

I don't really have the details on that, I'm only reiterating what was confirmed by a mod on the Zentalk forums that it is indeed locked. It's rather interesting that we can flash through it, but I'm not really experienced in bootloader unlocking enough to tell what's going on.

Are you sure that the WW version works great since it doesn't support Band 17 (700MHZ) which is mainly used by AT&T?

I use T-Mobile, so perhaps those limitations do not apply to me. I have not seen anyone reporting on service issues with AT&T at the time of posting.
The difference between a locked and unlocked bootloader is that a locked bootloader only accepts signed packages (packages built with the unique keys from Asus) while an unlocked bootloader will accept packages signed by anyone.
The rooted images are signed by Asus themselves, which lets us flash them through a locked bootloader.
If you push a system.img not signed with Asus' keys your device will not boot.

That's ^ said by people who never tried it by himself.
Locked bootloader won't boot unsigned kernel images only (you can flash them through fastboot, but won't be able to boot). This includes recovery.img and boot.img. There is no signature in system.img, that's why you can flash pre-rooted system.img an boot.

[Request] HTC 10 Japan (HTV32/pmeuhljapan) Backup/RUU/etc

Made a series of mistakes that led me to only have access to fastboot and recovery. It appears I'm capable of flashing things in fastboot. I can't access download mode at all (gives me an error saying it's unable to boot into download mode), which I believe you need in order to flash RUUs in the first place.
If anybody has a TWRP backup of system and boot that'd be awesome, but really need an img of download mode or a RUU or something to help me recover everything to normal. I am S-OFF and bootloader is unlocked.
Checked HTCdev and nothing was there for this device. All help appreciated.
How do you have fastboot when fastboot comands are done from download mode? Dont you have a stock system image that you made?
He means bootloader mode, the white screen. I think OP is SOL. That's why it's important to make backups, especially for exotic devices. I'm not sure if it's possible, but since he's s-off his best bet would be to convert to an unlocked or Verizon device if at all possible just to get the device working again and wait for either an ruu or backup.

How did you go with this, OP? I just got the HTV32 (HTC10) here in Japan, and unlike previous HTC's I have owned here (Desire, M7), there seems to be no RUUs for Japan anywhere (or am I not looking hard enough...). Website HTCsoku seems very short on info on this model, and the former repository for all things HTC in Japan for modders and tinkerers, 'Scottish Vinegar', has disappeared. Will be getting Sunshine then flashing TWRP and SuperSU soon, but I always like to have the option of stock images, etc., handy, just in case things go tits up.
I remembered the case of failure to entering Download Mode in M9 which solution is flashing the hosd image (extract from firmware), you can give it a try

Unfortunately was not able to get a hold of the stock RUU. I took my phone to my carrier and they gave me a new one free of charge despite the unlocked bootloader, S-OFF and TWRP being installed. Was just more careful on the replacement phone.
I actually am still looking for a stock RUU though.
Personally I made a TWRP backup before installing SuperSU. That way I can update with OTAs later on. (once we get an OTA we'll be able to pull the stock recovery img from it and update without issue).
Trying to convert this model to an international model was a terrible mistake. Au KDDI does not play well with these types of things. My Butterfly 3 is permanently SIM locked on AU's network for attempting the same thing (was trying to get Marshmallow at the time, which coincidentally is being released for the device next week).
I have been running Xposed and SuperSU with no issues at all though. If you get any "device encrypted" error after S-OFFing, just factory reset the data in TWRP.
Many domo's, DarkRazorZ!
I read that twrp-3.0.2-6-pme.img is the one to go for - that what you used?
Good you had no grief from HTC Japan. I actually sent back my M7 for the purple camera issue a few years back and did very little to disguise the fact it was unlocked and S-Offed. I think they are all fellow modders there and don't give a damn what we do. One reason why HTC is awesome.
I am now waiting for Nougat on the HTC10 (they (AU) just did a press release that it will be pushed soon), and as soon as that is on my phone, I shall be going the Sunshine route and installing aforementioned TWRP and so on. Getting fidgety, though... Xposed, Amplify, ad blocking... lemme at 'em.

Hello DarkRazorZ.
I'm curious about your attempt to convert HTV32 to international.
It couldn't be done because of hardware compatibility issue among HTV32 and international?
Or because of just your own mistake in the process?
Did you try a method like this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-10/help/convert-htc-10-to-unlocked-t3384460
I'm in Japan and considering to buy HTV32, and I want to use it with international firmware.
I know this is your thread, but I can't find any information about this on web.
So could you share me your knowledge. Thanks.
the us unlocked version can be used on KDDI Au but the verizon radio has to be flashed for it to work and even then, you will only get 2g speeds.

Just ordered my new HTC 10. May bring my toolkit back to life!

Some of you may remember me. Made the HTC toolkits from a few years back til about 2014.
I'm rocking the M8 right now, but I just ordered the 10. I've noticed this phone didn't even take off in the market, unfortunately. However, I am planning on bringing back my toolkit and developing one for the HTC 10.
If you don't know what my toolkit is, look in my signature. Mind you, it's been a couple years since I coded and my skills are horribly off. Luckily, I kept all my source files to reference back to.
Hasoon2000 will be back in the game!
Just received my HTC 10. Rooted it and what not.
The rooting process changed slightly from 2 years ago, but no biggie. Made a few adjustments in the code for my toolkit. Should have it uploaded by today or tomorrow.
I'm in the process of cleaning up my code and making the UI cleaner and have a better flow, compared to my old toolkits. Here's a sample of where I am at. What other commands would you like? Mind you, I have been absent from the rooting scene for 2 years, so I have no idea of what happened since. That is why I need your input!
Cool.

Now, is the process different for the Verizon model? From what I recall from my old Verizon model toolkits, Verizon phones couldn't be unlocked via HTCDev. Is that still true or can you now use HTCDev? Also, is what is the model codename for Verizon models? pfm/perfume? Got a picture of the Download Mode for me to look at?

Again, it's been a few years. Flashing update OTA/full ROM zip files should be the same for s-on and off, unless they changed something that I don't know about.
Also, who has the new ADB and Fastboot files and that can upload it for me? My files are old (what a surprise).

Did you unlock your bootloader from HTCDev normally? For TWRP, did you use the official one for the HTC 10 pfm/perfume?
What I'm trying to see is if the recovery is universal for the 10 or if they made separate ones for Verizon and for the GSM model.

I remember your toolkit. I used it with my one X a couple years ago and i found it very useful. It's really cool to see you working on it for the 10.
Also, finding and installing drivers could be a nice and useful extra.

Yeah, if it simplifies firmware installs that would be amazing.

Alternate service to send in HTC 10 since Sunshine is down.

Is there another service to send in my HTC 10 since the service by Sunshine doesn't exist?
I am unable to unlock the bootloader, the Sunshine app gives me a failure. I have no OEM bootloader option in the developer tools. I've made several attempts using the various forums so I can root the phone without success. I feel it's time to send it out to someone who can assist me.

I only know of a couple other shops that do it, but they are both also in the UK.
Other option, would be an XTC2 Clip/Power Adapter/Java Card, if they even still work after the HTC 10 has been updated to Oreo(not sure on that part).

I'm guessing,
http://xtc2clip.org/
Ebay. Do you have the procedure?
I've found this https://android.gadgethacks.com/how-to/unlock-your-htc-10s-bootloader-0178418/ after I read this thread, did you try that?
I'm a noob in a similar situation, have a completely stock non-branded Nougat and want to root and maybe install Viper or Lineage, but been putting it off cause I had to find a way to back up all the apps. Now I have to figure out a way to root/s-off quick, before my warranty runs out next month :S
edit: http://theroot.ninja/about.html seems to be up??

If your htc 10 is still on Nougat and ISN'T a Verizon device, then I think you can use Sunshine to S-OFF, don't hold me too it, but I believe you can. :good:
just download the app and try it out, it won't take your $$ of anything if it doesn't work, can't hurt to try.
I believe it is not working for Oreo and Pie htc 10 variants, and Verizon is needed to do by mail I think unless they fixed it for Verizon N as well.
Don't remember. but the website still says they do mail in, but I don't think they still are.
Give it a try and report back.

Got this message:
Failure!
SunShine was unable to gain root access to your device. You may need to gain "TempRoot" or "PermRoot" through some other means. For HTC Devices, unlocking with HTCDev.com and rooting with a custom recovery may work.

You can 100% unlock the bootloader @ htcdev and flash custom ROMs, you don't need soff for that.
I wouldn't update from N firmware until you try a few things out.
Maybe unlocking bl and rooting then sunshine will work?

Ah, that's good, didn't know that.
I'm gonna wait a few more days for an answer from the devs of the last app on my phone that can't back up via adb and its own backup process is broken. After that I'm gonna do what you said.
Is the guide I linked above ok or is there maybe an XDA guide to doing that? I looked at the Guides subforum here but there's too much stuff and I've never rooted a phone b4 so I'm not sure which thread I'm supposed to be looking at :silly:

Yea since you have the US locked version, or I think that's what you meant by unbranded. What's your firmware (in download mode) x.xx.617.xx or x.xx.401.xx
Here is the link for bootloader unlock: https://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/

No, I've got the EU version (or I suppose I do, I bought it in the EU). I meant that I got it from a retailer, not a cell network company like Verizon, since I see those need some special treatment. Software number is 2.41.401.41
