Can you replace Blinkfeed with Google Now? - HTC 10 Questions & Answers

Hi HTC 10 users. Can Blinkfeed be replaced with Google Now. Currently have a Nexus 6p and do love swiping right to quickly find my weather, travel etc information. Cheers for the help

You could simply press and hold home button for Google Now. Just a thing to get used to. Since blinkfeed is a part of prism HTC launcher, I don't think this can be easily done

Sure you can. Just install GNL. takes about 30 seconds.

Google Now Launcher.. Will be just like the nexus.

I am also interested in using Sense and replacing the Blinkfeed window with Google Now Tabs. You can easily turn off Blinkfeed tab and add a blank screen next to it and apply the Google Now widget. The problem with this appears to be that while the GN widget shows weather or one tab, you need to click the screen to get the 'More cards'. Even tho the widget reports using whole screen when you press and hold on it, during actual use it only shows a 4x1 or 4x2 size. Is anyone else experiencing this?
The GN Launcher is nice, but if you use that you can't use the HTC clock which I do like too. It seems like the widget should work.

If you root and flash xposed, you can install "Sense Toolbox." There is an option under "Various mods" to unblock HTC widgets for use in other launchers.

I see, thanks for the tip. Having ran deep down the rooting and romming trail years back on my Evo, I'm not ready to do that yet.
Suppose I stick with Sense, is there a way to get the Google Now screen to work properly, or is it just not working properly on my phone?

Yes, GNL works as directed, but then HTC widgets don't without rooting. The question here is about the functionality of the Google now screen under the Sense Launcher...it only seems to half work and doesn't take up whole screen. Trying to get a confirmation on that from another 10 user, maybe it's just me.

I personally don't use GNL, but I just installed to see if it I had any issues and it seems to be working fine.

Having come from a GPE Rom on my M8, I missed having Google Now on the pane to the left as well. I installed Nova Launcher and placed the Google Now widget on the left swipe pane and I was also able to place the HTC weather clock widget on my home screen. While it is true that the GN widget only shows a few cards, at least it's right there and no need to retrain my muscle memory...
One more note, I actually really liked the Sense Blinkfeed on my M8, but I had a hard time falling in love with the new News Republic service. I actually hated it, hence the switch to a different launcher. Unfortunate...

Agreed, GNL works fine as designed. That's not quite the issue. I am trying to determine if the widget works the same in Sense and GNL.
Ok here's two screenshots.
First, using the GNL, this is what Google Now screen (swipe left screen): All cards are there if I scroll down etc.

Using default Sense launcher with GN widget, this is what my GN screen looks like (swipe left screen): Only shows a 4x1 card, yet whole screen is active if, I click anywhere on screen, it launches GN. then looks like first pic. If you click and hold the widget, it outlines as if it is taking whole screen. Yes, it works, but there's an extra step, and wasted screen, may as well just use an icon.

I was actually referring to downloading GNL and using the sense widgets within that. But I guess that wouldn't really interest you since you're not rooted. As far as the GN widget on sense, you can resize that widget to get rid of the wasted space.

It appears to be sized to take whole screen already, when I press and hold the grips are full screen sized. Hence the confusion.

replacing blinkfeed with google now
1st, i was/am a long time xda member with hundreds of post. somehow my account got messed up. xda would not reply to any of my emails to fix it so i had to start over as new user. useless info to most of you. i get it. just want get the "newbie" issue out of the way. looooong time nexus 5 owner. just got the HTC 10. love it. rooted and leedroid custom rom. i'm also a lover of google now. i hate blinkfeed. i didn't see the answer i was looking for. if i missed it, my apologies. i want to keep the sense launcer, but replace the blinkfeed panel with google now like i had on my nexus 5. the sense toolbox says that it's not compatible with android 6. so long question short, is there a way of keeping the sense launcher and replace the blinkfeed panel with google now? thanks and sorry for the long post.

Your ability to ask the exact same question as the original post may have something to do with the life story you gave prior to repeating it.

If you're going down the gnl route then check out the pixel launcher. It's quite slick and intuitive, especially if you're left handed (Google on the left for some reason) also if you do use a second launcher, iirc you lose your HTC widgets, as in theyre not selectable.

I've enjoyed ICS on my Desire Z for the last 6 months. I came back to gingerbread a few days ago and realized that this is what the phone is best at. So being a fan of HTC's Sense UI I loaded a stock rooted rom - tun4f1sh, which as we all know has a lot of unused stuff. So I removed bloat and some widgets I don't use and also included wallpapers, sounds, ringtones from Sense 4 and enabled track pad wake. If you are a fan of sense and are not into overclocked kernels and framework mods and would like to use a stable rom, then give this a spin.

HTC widgets I use are calendar (the large one with numbers and the small one with one appointment), weather clock, contacts, large weather widget, friendstream. So probably to much for your stripped sense rom Anyhow would like to see a rom based on our 'stock rom' with good battery life
Hagelslagje +1 on your choices except for friend stream. I've seen it slowing down my phone when swiping through homescreens. Anyways there's nothing really important that you get these days from facebook with the stream filled with trolls.(I'm not going to sync all that just for the trolls)
I would like to say that i'm not removing Teeter as i havent found another game of that type which is as polished.

Haha I understand no problem. There are also a ton of ways to read it anyway so wouldn't really miss it! I am always looking for a nice looking (mostly sense) rom with good battery life. Lately that's hard to find with the games I play I think, I never reach the end of the day anymore or maybe it's time for a new battery

I think the idea of this ROM is fantastic. The widgets i use are the weather widgets, the flip clock widget and the calendar widget. Other than that, i wouldn't really care for losing any of the other ones as i'd remove them myself anyway.
Also, I know you like to theme the ROMs you make, so if you make this Sense based one, you should give people the option of either using the themes you make, or just using vanilla Sense 2.1.

This one will have sense2.1 theme "HTC" by default. The only other theme i left behind and use is "Slate"(personal favorite among those provided by htc). I removed Blackboard , Steel, Wood. So you might as well tell me which of them you people use so i can remove the rest.
Also you can check this thread for a nice collection of skins for sense 2.1

For me none, I don't use the other htc themes actualy, have one from the thread you mentioned.
Surprisingly, HTC has released an OTA update for our phones. Sadly, it isn't ICS (that was to be expected), but it's 7mb in and it seems to bring fixes and optimisations.
On the Virtuous Sense 2.0 thread, user deveb had this to say about it. So it seems like it would be worth including that small update in this ROM if you do release it.
sorry was travelling a lot lately. I'll have to start over this rom soon. Will upload as soon as i'm done

EDIT: Use the attached zip. Flash it through recovery. I'll update the main rom package soon.
EDIT: Thanks to kusiman77 for letting us know about HtcLocationService.apk. (I've been stuck in the same city for the last 15 years. I know thats not an excuse)
Also is there a reason that the weather app cannot update my location automatically? Other than that this ROM is perfect. Thanks for the hard work
EDIT
I pushed the HtcLocationService.apk to system/app and it is working now.
Love the Rom THanks
Thanks for this. you are right about gb sense being the best for Desire Z. This ROM reminds me of playing with the phone in the store when I first got it and being excited. It's what it was meant to be, and it is good.
Help, Not Installing
I recently just tried installing this rom : Sense-2.42.405.4-R2.zip - 203.00 MB .....through Rom Manager (Paid Ver.)
But, it seems I cannot.
I also tried installing through clockworkmod in recovery, but still I cannot.
It says 'update installed'.
When I boot my phone, , it is always on boot screen (the animation)

Just got my Gnex and I have some questions

So my Gnex arrived from Google last night, and I am in the process of setting it up. However three things immediately jumped out at me that I was hoping to get clarification on. First, when I long press the screen I am not shown the option for widgets. All it shows me is wallpaper options which I found weird since obviously Android is big on widgets. Is it supposed to be like this, or am I missing a setting somewhere? Second, for the life of me I can not find the settings for the default launcher. I would like to add some new icons but I am unable to do so. Lastly, all the other icons can be long pressed and then removed, with the exception of the Google search bar at the top. In all previous Android phones I was able to add or delete anything from the home screen, again, am I missing something or is this a "feature"??
open the app drawer ad you can drag icons and widgets to the screens.
to remove the pesky search bar (a "feature"!) you need a 3rd party launcher such as Apex or Nova, from the play store (the free versions are fine)
Widgets are now under a tab in the app draw.
I believe you can remove the Google search bar by selecting a different search provider in the settings list.
As far as launcher settings I think u need a custom rom to do that.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
1) They are located in your app drawer, Right at the end after your Apps
2) Think this is located in the settings menu, but is Limited. Been so long since i was on stock
3) It can be removed IIRC, but the space is not useable.
All in all, You might want to look at an alternative launcher like Apex or Nova, All are close to stock but with a wealth of features

My wife just got the GN two days ago, upgrading from a Droid Inc running Stock+ rom. I actually like the new features of ICS. Seems very different coming from Sense, two versions old. I'm not using an Android device, but if I were, the GN would almost definitely be my pick right now.

Sense is terrible and I will never again purchase a device with that abomination installed on it! I had sense on my Sensation (previous phone) and then I rooted it, killed sense, and was running an AOSP ROM for the past few months.

I actually like Sense and would not have objected if my wife insisted on the Rezound or the upcoming Inc 4G. It does have some very useful widgets and is pretty slick looking. Doesn't matter anyhow, I'm not on Android and wife loves her new GN. Hopefully she'll get the 4.0.4 update today or at least this week to iron out some of the small annoyances.

A more refined and ultimately more usable experience so far as I can tell from using it/reading through the description. Sadly, it went crazy and rebooted my phone along with some potentially seizure inducing flickering of the screen. I'm on a nightly CM10.1 ROM though, stock ROMs should be fine with it.

Google Play has had problems installing keyboards into the right directories since the JB update (which is why your selection wont stick with reboot). Another fix (besides freezing default), is to backup Swype with an app like TiBackup or ROM Toolbox, and then restore the backup. The restoration should put the app in the correct location and will allow the selection to stick

That didn't work. I unfroze the samsung keyboard, rebooted (samsung now switched to default), backed up swype, restored app+data, set swype to default, rebooted phone, and the samsung keyboard is the default again. What step did I miss that would put it in the correct location? (fyi, still using Ultimate backup lite)
Update. Okay for some reason ultimate backup lite didn't see "swype+dragon" For some reason, even though I deleted swype beta, it's somewhere on my phone and that's what ultimate saw. Now, the bad news is that I re-downloaded TiBu, and it found swype+dragon. I backed it up and restored it. Now all it does is tell me "Unfortunately Swype+dragon has stopped working." HELP!
Update 2: Mini-heartattack averted. I thought maybe there was a directory conflict, so I uninstalled "swype+dragon" via TiBu, checked that the app was no longer listed in the app manager, and then restored "swype+dragon" via TiBu. It worked and I set it to default. Restarted my phone and it stuck without freezing the samsung keyboard. Whew! Thought I would detail out my steps unless anyone else tried this.
Thanks for the idea corbn89

i thought so too for a while as i have been using the 4.2 KB since CM10.1 got to 4.2. prior to that i used all iterations of swype for the past 2.5 years. i liked how the 4.2 KB looked, and thought their swiping implementation was 'good enough', not quite as good as swype but i saw no reason to go and install swype anyway.
however now that they released swype on Play, I DLed it again and the swyping accuracy, corrections and even ease of use of the swype KB is far better. i had almost forgotten how much i liked swype until I stopped using it in lieu of the 4.2 KB. i'm gonna stick with swype again (but I wish their Holo theme was blue instead of orange)
I love this keyboard, it is much better than swiftkey.
I do like swype but miss having the voice type button and use SwiftKey instead because I do use a lot of voice typing.

[APP] QLight plugin for QSlide Apps. Toggle the flashlight from QSlide Apps

Hey guys,
Several days ago LG released an SDK for QSlide Apps, which allows 3rd party developers to integrate their apps with QSlide. I've decided to create a QLight plugin, which integrates Tiny Flashlight with QSlide Apps. The result: now you can start the flashlight directly from your notifications screen. Please note that this functionality requires both the QLight app and Tiny Flashlight v5.0 (currently in beta).
Android 4.2+
More info here: https://plus.google.com/110628468453341475793/posts/f8XqPDSffj2
You can get the files from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2560625 You need both qlight.apk and tf_beta.apk.
Android 4.1
QSlide on Android 4.1 does not support 3rd party apps. The only way to use QLight is to mask it as an LG application. There are 7 LG apps, which support QSlide, but only several of them are installed on every device. This gives us a chance to use LG's identifiers and install QLight as an LG app...
Try to install one of the 2 files attached at the end of this post. Only one is required. If both files fail to install that means your ROM has all LG QSlide apps already installed and there is nothing we can do.
You have to install Tiny Flashlight v5.0 ( tf_beta.apk ). Get it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2560625
Reboot your device
If everything is OK you will see the QLight shortcut in the QSlide section in your notification window.
Drawbacks: The icon can not be changed and will be LG's default icon for the given application.

The only requirement is Android 4.2, but this may work on earlier versions. LG mention in the docs that the floating windows part of the SDK require Android 4.2, but they don't say anything about the QSlide shortcuts. If anyone wants to test I can compile an APK, which requires an earlier version of Android.
As for other apps - my company's alarm clock app was updated today to support Samsung's multi window implementation and probably it will be updated to support LG's QSlide floating windows too.

so this will not work on stock.
I did try using this but I get a message about not able to parse package which I assume is because stock is 4.1.2
I would be willing to test if you build

OK I've attached a version for Android 4.0+ in this post. If everything is OK you should see the QLight shortcut icon in the QSlide apps section.

Thanks for trying... While it did install it does not show in the q slide bar and is not in the edit menu might need the lg2 q slide (was hoping someone would port the lg2 stock for us....) which has more apps for starters. I only got the 4 basic apps calc messaging memo and videos the browser icon is there but only brings up a full browser

I still might be able to hack it. I'll purchase the Optimus G, so I can test.

That actually worked.
Not sure what you did but you did good.
If you could maybe the extra apps on the lg g2 (phone, messaging, browser the lg g browser opens but not as a floating vanishing window) can be hacked to work on the lg g 4.1 those would be great

Even with g2's QSlide you can't use all apps inside a floating window. The app must be specifically written to use QSlide.

This looks like a great addition. However, I don't have Qslide on my phone. Haven't tried installing it.
Thanks for doing this though. We need more things like this.

Thanks for this app.. It's nice to see that new dev kit put to use

FYI I have 8 stock lg qslide apps on my lg g2..
Videos, phone, calendar, email, memo, voice mate, file manager and calculator. If you're missing one lemme know which one and I'll pull it for you if you want another lg identifier..
Thanks for this. Nice work on TF in general, been using it for years!
Is there a way to add an option to leave the notification pulldown open (down) after toggling the light via Qslide? *Edit- Or a floating window would be cool!

I am on a G2 using a Flex hybrid rom & I too have 8 stock Qslide apps but instead of quick memo and voice mate (which are in toggles and swipe-up on home key) I have "internet" (that does open a new window) and messaging.

The notification pulldown is out of my control. Opening a floating window is possible on Android 4.2+. I'm adding it to my TODO list.
Updated qlight_pa.apk and qlight_tdmb.apk (in the first post) with support for Tiny Flashlight v5.0 beta 5. You can get beta 5 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2560625
I have installee both app but only one is visible in app manager and I can uninstall it. second one when I install it says that it is installed bit in app manager I cannot see it and cannot uninstall it. Is this behaviour ok? I am on stock unrooted.
Thx

Questions for Fire phone users

Hello,
I'm thinking of purchasing a Fire phone and have a few questions.
1. What's it like having no back & recent apps button?
2. Have you managed to install any launcher that makes it look like what Android normally looks like with working widgets and kitkat/lollipop notification bar?
3. Anyone tried Nova Launcher?
4. I read you can sideload google play without root, does that work properly?
I currently have a Moto G, I like it but at times I wish it was more responsive.
I don't take many pics but when I do I often wish they were a little clearer.
I'm looking for a phone that isn't too expensive and isn't too big (most phones seem to be getting huge).
Thanks
I wouldn't. For the price, any phone with android would be better.
Find one that you can unlock the bootloader and your in business.
IMHO.
I am happy with it and the specs are great... not any android is better. Just need to get used to ir... back button is not necesary as you swipe from the bottom of the screen up and the job is done. And the price is really good... i paid 99 pounds...

Have you tried any launchers to make it look more like normal Android?
It's a good looking, very fast smartphone that is hamstrung by the OS. Amazon will not unlock the bootloader and let folks root it. If these things don't bother you, and you're willing to try something new, then for $99 it is an incredible deal. Although the same great specs in a true android phone would be better at this price, such a thing doesn't exist: the specs to price ratio is tremendous.
Finally, although I use it as a second phone, I have grown to like some of the apps I'm stuck with. For example, I like the phone's email app as much as the gmail app. The feature's on the phone's email app work better for me across various email accounts.

I have had the unrooted unlocked 3.6.8 version for a few months now. I had no issues side loading any of the Google products to the phone. I did have install older android 4.2 versions of the 4 files and that worked on the AT&T version. Google Maps have the double texted which is annoying but i have been using either the chrome version or Here app for navigation. Weird thing i could be wrong but my Zillow app has a map feature that does not have that issue. Not sure if it using GMaps but I thought it did. Someone smarter than me might want to see what the Zillow app does differently. My home screen is the Google Launcher with Zooper Widgets. IT runs and fells like a normal android device. Not having a back but does cause issues with some apps that have their own back button. If you press the home button once it takes you to the main screen you set in the launcher just like normal Android devices. If you double tap the home button it opens the FireOS recent app/app killer menu which I like MUCH better then the Lolliop way. The camera is great it takes wonderfulphotos much better then my Nexus 4.

1. Actually, you can wipe from bottom to up to perform a BACK operation.
2. I tried google now launcher. No widget and no wallpaper.
3. Not yet..
4. Google play actually works for most of the apps. I'm trying to figure out how to back up photo to google photos, as google+ can't be installed.
I think fire phone has a great camera. And if you're a heavy amazon prime user , I mean things like instant video and prime music, maybe getting one is pretty good.

I dont regret getting it. My prime was up soon so at a hundred bucks i say its an awesome phone. I did use google now launcher for a couple weeks but then decided to give the amazon launcher a try and i'm still using it two months later. The swipe up to go back isnt perfect but you do get used to it. I have a pretty thick case on my phone so the only time i have a hard time is in landscape cuz my finger hits the case. For notifications I use heads-up and it works really well. You really just need it for for apps you load through google play. If you use facebook messenger you can use the bubble thing. I dont use it but i have. You just have to mess with the messenger app settings. As far as sideloading... what do you want to sideload? I gave the link of google plus that works so that fixes that... hangouts notifications is fixed by heads up cuz the regular notifications disappear in one sec. Maps doesnt work cuz of the text but nokia here works really well and i've come to really enjoy it and dont miss maps at all. Other than that everything I loaded through google play works very well... clash of clans, pebble watch app. youtube, drive, google play music, keep, gmail. The only app I havent had the opportunity to use is wallet but i did install it and it loads fine. Just not sure if the nfc side of it works. If anybody has info on that it would be appreciated.

Oh and the firefly app is awesome plus the amazon prime music app has gotten really really good. Maybe theres room for improvement but I love it now. You dont have to add each song to your library to listen. You can just search and play and there's a lot of music included and new stuff is added all the time.
Which widgets are you referring to that don't work with the Google launcher? My Zooper, Hangouts, CNN, and Google Music widgets work for me.

Buzz launcher is awesome, nova worked but no wallpaper or widgets, I tried like 30 launchers but because we're stuck on 4.2 we can't do much for now.
