Confessions of a young Fanboy

Hello XDA Community,
I got my first smartphone in middle school. It was my first phone. The T-Mobile Shadow (Windows Mobile). I was 13 then. Now I'm 18, and in College. I spent my free time in doing the easy mods the community created. I got the MyTouch 3g as soon as it came out and started flashing roms. Then, the Nexus One came out and I immediately came up with a scheme to convince my sister to take my old phone so I could get the Nexus One. Anyways, I got it in 10th grade and life was sweet. I was happy. I became a "crack flasher". So I had the phone for a while and decided then to get the Galaxy S3.
As for the Galaxy S3...
I don't know about this phone. I've had it for less then a year. Obviously, I became an HTC fanboy growing up with HTC phones. My friends all got HTC phones. We all flashed roms and enjoyed ourselves. But when this phone came out, I had to make a hard decision. The removable battery, expandable storage (and T-Mobile availability) made it a good choice. It was unlike the HTC One X in those regards. (My friend got that phone) The HTC One just came out. I want it now.
Why?
Well I suppose I'm not that happy with the S3. I got a 64gb micro sd for it. I thought I could replace my ipod. I was so wrong. I hate all of the music players on Android. I regard music too highly to be happy with the Android music experience. Anyways, that's not going to change with any new Android phone. I've learned to live with that. The screen is nice, but it doesn't compare to other displays I've seen. I guess it's because I keep the DPI kind of low and expect crispness? The LG Nexus 4 has an amazing screen also and works very well. The biggest thing though, that I really dislike about this phone, is the build quality. I hate the plastic feeling. I hate the gloss and fingerprints. It feels so cheap. And, the UI isn't even liquid smooth. I've flashed a lot. I guess I'm comparing it to the Nexus 4 now, as I've played with that a bit. I've got very close to really quick, but I'm not satisfied. I paid a lot of money and invested my hopes in this technology but I'm not pleased.
I've found that throughout the time I've owned this phone, I've thought a lot of different things. I've considered Windows Phone, Blackberry, and even iPhone, just because I want something sexy that works well. But I'm an Android man.
I don't know if this is because deep down, I'm an HTC fanboy. Or if it's because I'm a Google fanboy and love Nexus phones (or a combination?). i hate these second thoughts I'm getting after such a long time of having the phone. It's not long enough to justify an upgrade. Am I cursed with being unimpressed forever growing up with so many innovations around me?

We all have our wish lists for that single, perfect phone. I know I certainly do. Whether it's the IPhone's/HTC's/Sony's great hardware/build quality, or the pure Android experience offered with Nexus, or Samsung's wide array of software features/apps, the "perfect" one.
I love technology and I love my smartphone. I love rooting, flashing, trying out a thousand different things on my phone. But why should I care about it (the smartphone) so much? Of course I have invested lots of money into my smartphone, but it's not healthy to be consumed so much by smartphone. I know I'm going a bit off-topic, but really I'm just trying to tell you, just get a phone for what it really was for, to call, to text. I know apps are so convenient nowadays because we have everything in a device, but sometimes it's not bad to do it old-fashioned.
Get a phone that you will use now and a while. Get a phone that can serve its purpose. While a phone may have many features or many apps, I highly doubt a student or a professional will find use for it every single hour of the day. Most of us I assume probably aren't developers, and even as hobbies, it shouldn't consume much time.

Back when you were content with your phone(s), things were growing much slower than they are now. At the current rate that phones are being released, it's guaranteed that there will be a new and better phone that you will want within the first year. Companies don't want you to be content with a phone for too long. I bet Samsung has better features right now that could have been added to the s4, but they want to save those for the s5.

I agree on almost all of your points. I've had my share of android phones (G1, Moto Charm, G2x, and now Galaxy S3) and I'm beginning to become disappointed with the experience of this phone compared to that of a newer android device or even an iPhone and it's been only 8 months since I've purchased it. I don't quite agree with you on the music issue as I'm a music junkie myself with a 7 gig library but poweramp has transformed my android music listening experience into a great one.
Back to the S3, I've found that the battery life and build quality have been very sub par for me. Plus the pentile display is nothing to rave about either. Being only a sophomore in high school and tied to my family's family plan on T-Mobile, I really don't have an option to switch. I desperately want a Note 2 or Nexus 4 but financially I'm screwed. Even with the Nexus 4's low price I'd have to wait for the rumored 32gb version for storage reasons but that'd set me back $400 for shipping and tax. The S3 isn't even worth that anymore used.
All in all, I feel as if I should've waited for the Note 2 or Nexus 4 before getting the S3. Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome device that's suits all of my needs fine but there are definitely better choices out there from the perspective of a critical tech junkie such as myself.

You can see the phones I've had in my signature, all 3 Nokias were indestructible...the old flip phone, I threw it at a wall and it exploded into a million pieces, put it back together and the thing still works...man they really knew how to build phones...
The Nexus One was a great phone. I had to drop it and break the internal screen (oddly enough the outer glass didn't crack at all.). But it felt great in my hand, it was very solid and built well.
The Nexus S was kind of disappointing I have to say...Almost completely the same specs and I felt it wasn't built as well. I sold it for my GS-II
That stupid thing was the retarded stepchild of the S-II fleet...the poor developers were stuck with GB while T-Mobile picked its ass holding back all the updates. ****ty screen for sure, visible display flaws, poor PPI, cheap feeling...I never wanted to get a Samsung again. But I did...
The S-III was a huge improvement to say the least...I'm very satisfied with it. It does feel cheaper than say my old N1, but I think it feels a lot better than the NS or t989. Honestly with a screen protector and an otterbox commuter case, it's just fine. And as long as I have my Cyanogenmod, I don't care what software the thing comes with . Barring anything crazy coming out anytime soon, I don't see myself getting another phone until this falls apart.
In my eyes, as cliche as it may be, since my most important factors are Cyanogenmod and otterbox (or equivalent) case availability, all I care about are the specs. I sure hope screens stop ****in growing though...this one is almost too big as it is...
BTW: I sold my t989 on eBay for $350, all I had to do was unlock the thing, instantly increases it's value by a good $150. Always unlock your phone before you sell it, it will sell for much more.

Referring to the music, my library exceeds 30 gigs and I've just found it irritating to sync and manage. Not a huge issue though. I think we're on the same page though. I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks that way about the device. The thing is that I can get the HTC One spending all of my current savings, but then of course that means no new phone in the coming months. And Later this year there are just too many rumors about this "X Phone" and the new nexus... Idk.

I see where you're coming from. I got a huge Seido case for my S3, and then took it off after about a month. I dropped it afterwards (about 9 feet onto my subwoofer, long story) and nothing happened luckily. I like it better without a case. I guess looks would be a smaller factor then. Maybe, I should just snap that huge case back on and try to hold out until the holiday season... Idk lol. Thanks for the reply. :good:

Companies are getting us used to crave new things within very short periods of time, an example of this is the fact that new phones, tablets or any kind of electronics pop every 4 to 6 months, which is done to satisfy our non-basic needs of always having the latest gadgets, and to create more profits or economic growth for the typical capitalist corporations. We've been spoiled to have new tech very fast, which is in a way bad as this craving (or addiction?) can easily go out control and we can be left bored with very new gadgets in our hands or even go into debt t o satisfy this craving for more. This spoiling behavior makes us feel the need to want more or not to be satisfied with what we have and we can quickly become slaves of technology if we dive too deep into it, hence what you are feeling when you say that you are growing unimpressed with so many innovations or not satisfied or please with the current technology. Perhaps I'm going a bit of topic, but is worth to be aware where we stand as consumers and the invisible ways corporations play with our "addictions" or "needs" for the latest.

I love the looks of both the Nexus 4 and the HTC one better than my Galaxy S3, but no removeable battery and no expandable memory? Get serious? I can deal with a plasic back, the price I paid tells me it's not cheap! Anyways, I don't agree with anything else you said. This phone was awesomly fast out of the box and now I have a custom ROM that even improved on that. Plus, I prefer Samoleds although I admit Samsung could do better. A 1080p screen with Super Amoled + with a different pentile arrangement would be nice. My next phone is most likely to be the Note 3, Samsung is just at the edge of innovation right now, too much so for me not to buy. Can't wait!

I would say my dream phone would be:
-1080p 4.75in (no bigger, no smaller) super-fancy spaceage whatever screen that can actually get its brightness as low as possible at night, and stays clear and readable in direct sunlight...
-1.5ghz+ ultra-energy efficient 4+ core processor.
-2GB+ RAM
-Micro SD card
-16+ GB internal storage
-Removable back cover and battery
-NFC, Barometer, compass, so many sensors I can start a weatherstation lol.
-Vibration with adjustable intensity from barely felt to earthquake magnitude.
-Latest Cyanogenmod stock, with options to auto-update to stable, M, or nightly releases (a guy can dream...)
-A rear camera that can shoot 1080P video and instant-shutter, no noise high quality pictures, and a front camera capable of doing an HD Skype call.
-2 front-firing speakers (one on bottom, one on top that doubles as earpiece); a rear-facing mic for the camera, and a bottom-facing mic for phone calls
-Capacative buttons underneath screen (menu, home, back in that order)
-24-hour runtime battery
-Body of carbon fiber (the durabilty of plastic with the feel of metal)
-Super gorilla glass whatever that can withstand a 5-foot face-down drop.
I would pay a good $450 for that phone.

Can't forget the holographic keyboard.
Scores over 10,000 on quadrant, I saw a stock HTC one today score 9133 on quadrant running stock 4.1.2. That was impressive.

The power of a desktop computer, specifically i7 3770k, gtx 580 sli x3, 24gb ram, 256gb sd, all in a sexy Nokia n9 form, running windows 8.
Thats my dream phone. Seems realistic enough.

Get a cerulean n9. Though the s3 hardware is very much superior to the n9, the n9 just wins hands down IMHO.
I have both phone and u would pick the n9 over the s3 any day of I didn't water damage the power switch on my n9.. Grrr Seattle rain..

Those specs would definitely be amazing haha. But yeah, I did end up getting the HTC one, and I think I'm happier. I havent even rooted yet and I'm still content. It just works so well. Everything is so clean and sexy.

Should i upgrade from my HTC One (M7)

The only reason to get the N5 over the G3 is if you absolutely have to have the fastest Android updates. Or the screen is too big. Or you only want to pay ~$300 for an off-contract phone.

Take it from someone who was in your exact shoes: yes. I had an HTC One XL, upgraded to a Dev Ed HTC One M7 when it came out and I loved it. I did. Screen was amazing. Phone felt great. And photos were pretty sweet (shameless plug: https://www.flickr.com/photos/lng0004/tags/htcone/). But then, when they announced the M8 which looked too similar with no big improvements to the camera, I decided to switch. My main interest was in a great camera sensor. So it was going to be either the Z2 or G3. G3 won me over with style.
After 6 days with the new G3, am I happy? Yup. It's still very much locked down. But after rooting, I was able to set up the phone to do (almost) all of what my HTC One was capable of. And the camera performs much better. Daytime photos actually look detailed and can be cropped without turning into one big mush. Oh, and the screen. Wow.
What I'm trying to say is, there's no reason not to upgrade.
PS: Get the G2 if you don't want to spend $600. Just as capable as the Nexus 5 with better camera and battery.

I used the M7 as my primary phone until I bought the G3 on Friday. I don't regret a thing. This phone is a beast.

I think your M7 is still amazing. The G3 is amazing too but some mind-boggling design elements detracts from the overall aesthetics of the phone. I mean, it has a sleek body with an amazing screen but marred by over-sharpening, poor UI colors, and badly designed icons. Come one! Cyan plus blue-gray in the UI? The over-sharpening of the display makes the fonts look weird and unbalanced (like a mixture of bold and thin weights). It also creates halos around texts. I would still prefer the HTC display quality.

I am not trying to defend the phone because everything you said is spot on and should have been fixed before its release. Definitely for us on the state side but if you are a flashaholic chances are after root and fingers crossed bootloader unlock for anyone not on tmobile stock problems wont bother you in the least. So I would say if you don't plan on being a power user with this phone skip on it until LG pulls it together.

You mentioned over-sharpening twice. That's because it's the only noticeable flaw of the phone. Everything else is subjective. I do agree that HTC's SLCDs are amazing though. Brighter than the G3. But everything that's good about the G3 makes it a great upgrade.

The main reason why I got the G3 over the M8 is because of the screen. It's practically the same physical size as the M8 but with a bigger screen.

Coming from m8 I would say no unless you can do without custom roms and live with pretty awful lag on the phone. I went for the screen size and resolution can you tell the difference ow yes.
Camera is better and like the thin bezel but again I say the lag is the biggest disappointing point of out the phone.

I don't experience any lag with my G3, and they are still working on unlocking the bootloader - I wouldn't count out the devs yet.

I had an M7 for 3 months and I traded it outright for a Galaxy S4. Aside from the unimpressive camera, the original HTC One had terrible cellular reception. This was confirmed by numerous people on the XDA forums and was likely due to the all-metal construction. Right away, I noticed a drastic improvement in my data speed and rarely experienced dropped calls, like I frequently had with the One. My new G3 actually has better reception than the GS4, so if you are considering an upgrade the LG phone's improved call and data quality should be cause enough.
Throw in a faster processor, MUCH better camera, replaceable battery and micro-SD card slot and it's a no-brainer.
It's really strange to me that phone reviewers never consider reception. They talk about the screen, processor speed, speakers, etc. but don't ever mention the phone's ability to send and receive calls.

Thanks everyone for the input, I actually went ahead and pulled the trigger...... I figured that I can give it a week trial to see if I like it.
So I went to Bestbuy and grabbed on..... Oddly I was still given the $50 in store gift card and the phone was only $50 + tax. That made my purchase even sweeter.
So far I really do like the screen size and the speed, it actually does seem faster then my HTC One (M7). The camera is extremely better and I actually liked my M7 camera. If all goes well this week I will give my son my M7 and keep the G3

And also, it will continue development. I mean, with android 7.0 just released, it will get it officially, or even a bug-less cm build? Any good mods or anything at all that can attract me to buy this device? Leave your opinion here and thanks for helping my buying choice.

Short answer? Not a chance - purely from a development standpoint, the HTC M9 has been a staggering disappointment. We have some great folks working on AOSP-based and stock-based ROMs, but there simply isn't the breadth of development that exists for previous HTC One models. I'm not optimistic about the M10 either.
That said, the M9 is getting Android 7 (Nougat) from HTC, so we're not entirely behind the times with software updates, despite being slow (standard practice for non-Nexus devices). It is even possible that development of ROMs will continue to grow. Still, I would recommend waiting for the next Nexus phones (rumored to be released in October) and see how they compare to the current options on the market.
(As for the camera - I've never had any complaints, but I'm a pretty basic user on that front)

I don't really recommend this phone either. If you're looking for a budget phone... definitely go with the Nexus 5X/6P or One Plus 3 or any sub-$400 phone and put a skin over it (i.e. dBrand/Slickwraps). The sapphire screen on the back camera of my HTC One M9 has already cracked under not a whole lot of pressure applied to it some time ago and it would be silly of me to send it back to HTC to get it fixed as it'll crack again probably soon after. Camera is at best, 'meh' when it's in auto; I have the tendency to always grab photos in manual mode since I can make the photo more beautifiul. When this phone is in my hand with my pinky at the bottom holding it straight, my pinky starts to hurt because of its weight. Battery has been pretty good as I don't have a ton of apps running in the background only the ones I use daily (i.e. Snapchat, Hangouts, Maps, Messenger, etc.) but for other hardcore people who load apps onto their phone like mad... this would drain your battery pretty quick. Also YouTube videos drain the battery pretty quick from my experience LOL. If you have any questions about it, I'll try my best to give you an unbiased opinion. I still don't feel like I need to switch phones after having bought this phone on release day but quite honestly, I don't see how I could recommend anyone getting the M9 in 2016 even if it has gotten cheaper.

Thanks a lot for your reply. I can see why you can't recommend it, but I can't wait since I don't have a phone anymore. I was thinking about the Nexus 5x since i'm on a low budget but i heard it's not stereo speakers and the audio jack quality is pretty pour. i think i'll go with the iphone 6/se in the end.

I can relate to the weight issue. I hated to hold my m7 for more than 5 mins. Can't even watch youtube in bed because my hands would start hurting. And about the battery, my m7 drained it's battery in 1+1/2h of sot. that's so poor. and i changed the battery twice. I enjoy HTC only for the acoustics, but as I said earlier, i think i'm going with the 6/se for it's dac performance and mostly "just works" theory. I'm kind of sick of android and it's optimization.

The iPhone 7 & the new 'nexus' phones are right around the corner; I suggest you wait a bit before then. I have used an iPhone 6 for several months prior to getting the M9 and to be honest the fingerprint sensor on it is REALLY unreliable when you have the slightest amount of water or dirt on your finger (and quite slow and worked maybe 75% of the time with a super clean thumb). The SE model uses the old fingerprint sensor found in the iPhone 6 so it'll be as equally as bad. My ex had the iPhone 6 for a while and the battery literally crapped out less than a year so be sure that if you're planning to buy a used iPhone 6 off of Craigslist or another similar website, that it is still in 'decent' condition. Your option for the 6 is either a 16GB iPhone (~10GB of space) or a 64GB (~59GB of space) so if you need more than 10GB, a 64GB iPhone in good condition will still set you back ~$600-650.
Only reason why I ended up coming back to android was because I felt iOS was really basic at best and I truly did miss the customizing aspect of android. I recommend just buying a used phone to use for a month or two off of Craigslist that's ~$100 and purchase the newer phones (iPhone 7 or Nexus) after they have been released.

A compromise might be purchasing a used smartphone to tide you over until the new wave of Nexus phones and iPhones come out. A bit of purgatory, but it might work in your favor.

tempted to cancel my note 7 order

Watched multiple videos comparing the snapdragon vs exynos version and the snapdragon version lags like crazy. The iPhone 7 also totally destroys it at opening apps speed. I've always had Android phones but I'm feeling very hesitant to cancel my order. I have an s6 right now and I hate it. Horrible battery, wobbly home button, and it lags etc. I'm not sure I trust Samsung anymore. Seems the note 7 has the same horrible ram management issues. I called Verizon and spent $200ish to upgrade to the note 7 and they want me to send in my s6. What a mess. I already ordered a case and screen protector. I'm just not sure what to do now.

My (snapdragon) replacement is working great and I am not worried if iphone opens an app a millisecond before my note 7. I haven always had android and always will.

I just purchase what fits my needs regardless of brand or OS. In general I dislike Apple at present as the screen tech is lagging so far behind not to mention its even 200€ MORE than the Note 7. I use the S-pen so the Note is for me on this occasion.

Here's something odd. I got one of the first of AT&T's first batch on August 14th. I exchanged it today for a green battery replacement. Configured the exact same way the new one is noticeably smoother and snappier. The previous phone would get jaggy when scrolling and transitioning every once in a while but not regularly. It had the latest update AT&T pushed out after launch (itself an iteration ahead of T-Mobile) which is the same firmware that came pre-installed on the new one. The only difference was the 132ishMB update that made the battery green which I installed right after getting the new phone. So either: A) something I did configuring my old phone slowed it down, B) there's a h/w or s/w difference between the two, or C) there's more to the 132ishMB update than turning the battery green. Regardless I'm even happier than I was with the original death defying phone.

Let me try to help here.
Ill go over my device history quickly.
I started with pdas in 2003 and then windows mobile. I was using an HTC Kaiser when the first Iphone came out.
I switched to Android with the HTC Desire in early 2010. I have mainly been an HTC guy since then with the Desire HD, One V, S, X, One M7, M8 then M9. I have had other devices as back up phones.
My son had a Nexus 4, HTC M8, and now a Nexus 6p
My Wife had an Iphone4 and Ipad 2 then discovered Android with the S3. She upgraded to the Note 4 when it came out. I bought my Mother in Law the Note 5.
My first Tablet was the original Samsung 10.1 then the Nexus 7 and now Nexus 9. I use an Ipad at work as an "EFB" (electronic flight bag). That is what we use for all manuals and plates. I fly the Airbus for Air Canada.
So yeah, I'm a big techie an a "fan of technology". I have mainly been an HTC fan but have experience with numerous other brands including Nexus handsets and Tablets. I feel I am qualified to give an opinion as I am fairly unbiased. Okay, that's not quite true. I am a huge HTC fanboy (who is currently using a Note 7).
So, why did I switch? I'll tell you.
1. Screen size.
Yup, biggest point.
2. Screen quality
Nothing beats Samsung here. I prefer my M7 screen to my M8 or M9 truthfully (colour accuracy) but the Note series (or Samsung in general) beats the Nexus 6p.
3. S pen
My Wife doesn't use hers. I have missed mine since retiring my last stylus phone the HTC Touch (Vogue). Loving it again.
4. Camera
Not the best, but the most consistent. Anand Tech's latest review said the M10 beats the S7 and Note 7 but hey, not by enough of a margin for me.
So, why didn't I wait for the Pixel phone? Quite frankly 5.7 inches of full on screen (no software buttons) makes a huge difference over 5.5. Also, I am willing to bet screen quality is better. Did I mention the S pen?
What do I miss? Well HTC has nailed touch response. The M7 was good, the M9 was the best. The Note 7? Meh. Not bad at all but HTC has it beat. And....Sense. Touchwiz has grown up, but sometimes the changes feel like change for the sake of change. No thought behind why. Sense just makes sense.
But, I love the Note 7. Hands down the best smartphone I have ever had. I am thoroughly enjoying it and I am sure you will to.

I'm loving it.. Seriously... I'm already getting more than 6 hours SOT first charge.... Amazing huh? No lag whatsoever and hadn't got got at all... Even while charging and being on Skype video for an hour. I haven't even disabled any bloatedware yet. There is an update ready though. I hope that doesn't mess anything up.

Or D) the old and new phones are the same (apart from the battery), and a small number of both batches have lag problems for yet-unidentified reasons. You could have gotten one of the bad ones first time, but the second one was good (as the odds favored it to be).
I had a serious UI-lag problem with my first phone too, but not with the replacement so far. It did take a few days for the problem to show up on the first one, so I'm not ready to celebrate quite yet.

Numerous people have said this.
I still have both and decided to rapidly open and close apps using multitasking, copy and paste etc. I have done this same "test" many times comparing HTC models to one another.
I can subjectively (because jamming with ones fingers is far from scientific) say touch response is the same. Apps seem to open the same but general UI speed seem more "fluid" with snappier animations. Also, I have yet to suffer keyboard lag in the second. The first would manifest itself if say Showbox was downloading videos while responding to a text etc. None here.
Some tips beyond the regular developer options and changing animations to 0.5. Use package disabler pro and disable that cheesy cheetah mobile interface (device maintenance). You will have stock battery and storage options, and the entire UI speeds up.
And before anyone asks, device maintenance was enabled on both and developer options stock settings for my "test".
Edit: received my new phone on the 15th so more than enough time for "lag" to kick in.

Nexus 5x replacement

Given the bootloop issue, what phone are people moving to?
Really liked this phone but with LG being unable to fix this reliably ...
Some requirements:
- No phones from LG, HTC or Motorola (gotten burned once or twice by each one of these - NEVER AGAIN!)
- Phone size should be the same as Nexus 5x or smaller
- Camera needs to be as good or better
- Fingerprint reader and USB-C
- VoLTE on T-Mobile Band 12

I'm really glad someone asked this because I am going through it too with my 5x. What do you guys think about the OnePlus 3T? Honestly, I have own every Nexus model,LG made the 4,5,&5x and those were always my work horses (flashaholic over here) and never had ANY trouble until the 5x.Now the Motorola Nexus 6,yeah they burnt my a** good.My Nexus 6p? FUGHETTABOUTIT!! You can add the F**KN to the front of that.It pulled this same crap months ago,now I have a great paperweight.Right Now it's a debate between the 3T and waiting for the OnePlus 5. I'm open to suggestions folks,if you know a better option, Please chime in!!!!

OnePlus 3T is too much of a f'ing brick. Way too large for a phone.
I would probably go for the OnePlus X but it's not sold anywhere.
I would go for the Xperia X Compact (23MP camera! and nice size!) but no official Lineago OS support, so sadly a no.
I should clarify that I also require LTE bands 4, 12 (T-Mobile) and maybe even 17 (at&t) ...

You know after looking around the choices if you want good support by aftermarket ROMs and Lineage is either something like the OnePlus or the Honor 5X. (The 6X and the 8 still have some issues in development of custom roms, but the 8 is further along than the 6X). Or spend big bucks and get one of the mainstream Samsung S# devices...
I just bought one of the Honor 5Xs for my wife actually and just went through unlocking the bootloader, and installing Lineage. I must say Im impressed with, for $150 phone its not that far from or Nexus 5X. When I get back home (traveling for work right now) I want to load some games to it and see how it does. For basic tasks it seems great. Battery life has been great for her so far, and build quality is good. Most of important, official Lineage support. So while the specs being a little behind the our 5X had me a little worried, once I had in my hands I was pleasantly surprised. For the price, no complaints.

I feel ya, same here as far as the T-Mobile and AT&T LTE. How about swappa.com on finding a OnePlus X

Yeah, and no Samsung or Iphone, no Huawei, Xi or ZTE either i'd imagine as they have all had problems worse or similar.
There will be problems with phones as long as new tech is pushed out faster than the tech is ready. I'd go with a Pixel phone which is in essence a HTC device which you apparently don't like.
So, Nokia 3310? It won't fail you.

Pixel. I really don't like the price tag (actually I hate the idea of a >$500 phone) but after years of rooting and ROMing I have gone hard all the way to the other side. I like the "Google" android experience, being able to easily take updates (since not rooted / unlocked bl), getting regular monthly updates and using Android Pay without hassle. The only thing I miss is Viper4Android. I really wish Google would pay some attention to audio and put in some better processing options.

Definitely not. First, reviews for the phone are actually pretty bad.
Second, after Google selling you a Nexus 5x and then ditching you over to LG with this issue, you really would give them your money again? Fool me once, ... I guess you can be fooled at least 3-5 times.

Nope. I know all about the boot loops. No issues whatsoever with my 5x. Best value in a phone ever for me @ $249. And from what I've read those that bought from Google store, as I did, aren't getting ditched to LG for support. Also seen plenty of happy Pixel users too. If I still wanted to root/ROM there would be more options fore sure but I don't and I no longer can stand any other phones with their F-ed up UI, bloat and never having updates. As a Fi user I also couldn't be happier never ever having to deal with a major carrier again. Yeah, sure, I'm pissed at Google for abandoning the idea of disruptively affordable devices in the US but I'd still rather deal with them than a carrier, OEM or other reseller. Not fooled even once.

Not sure on why you are so hell bent on thinking I'm delusional. I'm speaking only of my actual experience not others. Dollar for dollar the 5X is the best I've had. I'm very aware of the boot loop issue and acknowledge it's real. I'm not convinced that it's a manufacturing defect in all 5X phones ever made though. If you have some proof of that I really would be interested in it. Really, I would. Not because I dispute what you say but because I just havn't seen any proof that it's every phone.
Truth is even if I do get the loop I only spent $250 for the thing. I've easily got my money's worth out of it when compared to >$800 other options. Phones are tools not jewels. The cheaper the better. If there's another phone you know of that's not bloated, doesn't have a modded UI, get's security updates every month and get's new Android versions promptly then I'm all ears. Seriously.

If I get a refund for my bricked 5X, I think I might get a Moto X pure.
That is what I bought my wife and its pretty reliable for her (and easy to fix, as usual she hulk smashed the screen after about 3 months and I fixed it no problem)
BUT I am also very interested to see what HMD/Nokia do with their new phones. I have always been a Nokia fan. So it would be nice to get quality hardware with a widely supported OS (my brain thinks back to my old 8800 with Symbian S40)

Who gave the info that 100% of 5X is defected?

Pixel is the ONLY replacement for me. But:
1) Is expensive (for a 24 months update device) and we don't know whether is gonna bootloop or not.
2) Still has the same random ****ty compass decalibration that I had with my previous Nexus and only haven't had with my current work's iPhone 5S (that works amazing in any historic centre in places with tiny labyrinth streets like Barcelona). This is the worst part of the Nexus and Pixels. And still using Google Maps. I think Compass issues are one of the Top 3 complains in the Google product forums. And they still haven't fixed it in the hardware or firmware of their products..
3) still lacking the old N5 OIS. But this is compensated with the great HDR+ that only the Nexus / Pixel have. IMO.
4) And the Pixel is still big compared to the iPhones or the old Moto X or Galaxy Nexus.
Vs iPhones this is compensated with the non-physical/virtual buttons that make the phones​ easier to be used​ with one hand all the time.
(In fact I find and iPhone 7 with that terrible home button...and some back buttons..and that landscape multitasking....as difficult as a phablet, but still is a perfect size and nice shape to use with one hand)
Now Vs the old Gnexus or Moto X...is still more difficult. I'm one handing a 6P half of my time though... But I still miss the X or Gnexus shape/size.
On the contrary I used a Z5 Compact, smaller phone, and is not more comfortable than a Nexus 5...because of the terrible rectangular shape and is slippery material. So the size of the phone is not what only matters. Material and ergonomic shape is important as well.
Extra: there is still no stock, only released in 5 countries, and I'm not that hyped after so many months since release date. Specially now that I'm got a 6P with a new battery (original Huawei was terrible messed). But still is a huge phone compared to the Pixel.
And my priority:
2 > 1 > 4 > 3
BTW: I've just bought another 5X from Amazon (used) for my GF, at less than 220€. If the Manufactured date is OCT2015 I'll instant return it. Otherwise, I'll intensively try it for 30 days, if it doesn't boot loop I'll take my chances.
For the same price I was considering a Moto G5 with 3GB of RAM (this is the best part of this device) but 16GB Internal and I don't really like the camera, at least in low light, plus the SoC is old and both phones will update to Android O.

Most of sites giving Pixel critical reviews are just whining that Google is now charging the prices like Apple, Samsung, or LG. Otherwise, its hardware remains top notch, and the software will be always ahead of competition in terms of security updates and major releases. Some people can make the case that the Samsung Galaxy S8 is now the best Android smartphone. But I suspect that people who are used to stock and lean Android ROMs and speedy software updates would disagree with that.

I think someone from Google or LG said that only 15% or so of those devices were affected with the bootloop problem.
The question is though, whom exactly can you trust to make a quality smartphone when the giants like Samsung and LG have been caught with their pants down a few times? You can't trust anyone any more. That's why I personally like the idea of buying a 300USD smartphone, like a Moto G5 Plus (4GB) or a Huawei Honor 8 (when they regularly go on sale). If it bootloops or explodes, it's not a huge loss. If it does not break, then you will end up with a whole lot of spare smartphones after a couple of years.

Moto X Pure is a good value, but I think the new Moto G5 Plus (4G RAM version) has surpassed it. The problem with Moto X Pure is that Nougat is the last Android update it will ever receive (while Moto G5 Plus was launched with Nougat) and there is no fingerprint sensor. Otherwise, the big and accurate screen as well as stereo speakers still make MXP a compelling phone for a whole lot of people.

Agree that those aren't bad phones but their size is just a huge turnoff.
Price wise they are about in the right spot: $200 - $400 should be the range for a phone that is better than the N5x at this point.
Like I said in my original post - the requirements for a proper Nexus 5x replacement:
- No phones from LG, HTC or Motorola (gotten burned once or twice by each one of these - NEVER AGAIN!)
- Phone size should be the same as Nexus 5x or smaller (ideally probably 4.5 - 5.0" screen with a high screen to body ratio)
- Camera needs to be as good or better as N5x
- Fingerprint reader and USB-C
- VoLTE on T-Mobile Band 12
